    Trends and Indexes
    Wednesday, November 12

Good Luck on day #317 of 2008!

For College and the NFL, look for separate threads:

    • “NCAA Week 12 Trends and Indexes 11/11 through 11/15”
    • “NFL Week 11 Trends and Indexes 11/13 through 11/17”

For now, the balance of the sports menu in this thread will consist of the NBA, College Basketball, the NHL, and the Canadian Football League until their seasons are played out. Also, general sports news and notes will still be posted here.

    NOTE:
As information becomes available, we will attempt to post the trends and indexes as soon as possible.
Information is posted from what we believe are reliable sources.

    Daily Sports Roundup

    Thursday, November 13

The New England Patriots and the New York Jets will battle for first place in the competitive AFC East division on Thursday night. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

The Jets ran roughshod over the Rams last week, taking a 40-0 lead into halftime and cruising from there to a 47-3 victory. Brett Favre went 14-of-19 for 167 yards passing in that win, with one touchdown strike. Thomas Jones rushed for 149 and three scores on 26 carries. That was the Jets' third straight win, and it put them at 6-3 SU and 5-4 ATS.

The Patriots held off the Bills for a 20-10 win last time out. New England quarterback Matt Cassel completed 23-of-34 pass attempts for 234 yards in that contest, and rushed for a touchdown. BenJarvus Green-Ellis picked up 105 yards on the ground and also rushed for a TD. New England has the same record as New York: 6-3 SU, and 5-4 ATS.

The oddsmakers have the Patriots listed as 3.5-point home favorites for Thursday night, with the game's total at 42 points. New England is 2-6-1 on the OVER/UNDER through nine contests this season, while New York has been a bit better for the OVER at 4-4-1.

    Other Notable Events

LeBron James will lead his Cavaliers into action at home on Thursday night against the Nuggets. James poured in 41 points on Tuesday night to lead Cleveland to a 99-93 win over the Bucks; that wasn't quite enough, though, to allow the Cavs to cover the 12-point spread. There are just two other NBA games on the schedule on a light Thursday night around the league - Dallas will play in Chicago, and Golden State hosts Detroit.

    The Rest of the Schedule

There are three college football games set for kickoff on Thursday, although there are no ranked teams in action. Virginia Tech will take on Miami in the top contest on the Thursday schedule; both of those Atlantic Coast teams are 6-3 straight-up, with the Hokies at 3-5 ATS, and the Hurricanes at 5-3 ATS. Elsewhere it's Buffalo (5-4, 6-3 ATS) at Akron (5-4, 6-2-1 ATS), and then Wyoming (4-6, 2-7 ATS) at UNLV (4-6, 5-4-1 ATS).

Montreal will be in Boston for the top matchup in the NHL on Thursday night. The Canadiens are coming off a 4-0 win over the Senators on Tuesday night, with Carey Price picking up the shutout; that win improved the Habs' record to 9-2-2 on the season. Rounding out the schedule for Thursday: the Islanders at Ottawa, Detroit at Tampa Bay, Phoenix at Minnesota, Los Angeles at Dallas, Toronto at Edmonton, Calgary at San Jose, and Philly at Pittsburgh. The Pens came back to defeat Detroit 7-6 Tuesday night.

Finally, there are pair of games in the Coaches vs. Cancer college hoops tournament on Thursday at Los Angeles' Pauley Pavilion. UCLA is again the marquee team in action.

    News from the Wire

Redskins running back Clinton Portis (knee) is looking questionable to play at home against the Cowboys on Sunday night . . . Steelers running back Willie Parker (shoulder) could return against the Chargers on Sunday afternoon . . . Bulls forward Drew Gooden (ankle) missed Tuesday's game, and he's day-to-day heading into Thursday's game . . . Avs forward Joe Sakic (back) missed Wednesday night's game.

    A Peek at the Future

The NBA has more teams in action on Friday, with a dozen games on the schedule; highlighting that slate are Denver at Boston, Houston at San Antonio, and Detroit at the Lakers . . . the single college football game on the Friday schedule sees No. 22 Cincinnati (-3.5) at Louisville . . . the winless Lions are the biggest underdog on the NFL's schedule for Sunday - Detroit is getting 14 points on the road against Carolina.

      Six-pack for Thursday

Took lot of grief for leaving Pepperdine off my list of colleges, so I am guilty of a mistake, especially when you consider that Pamela Anderson's kids are batboys for the Pepperdine baseball team......

NFL knowledge with Week 11 approaching......

-- Falcons covered 12 of last 16 against AFC opponents.

-- Carolina is 5-1-1 vs spread as double digit favorite.

-- Bears covered two of last twelve with Grossman starting QB.

-- Texans covered six of last 21 road games.

-- Steelers covered two of last eight as home favorite.

-- Dolphins are now 4-20 in last 24 tries as a home favorite

Thursday's List of 13: Our NFL List of 13..........

        13) Packers-- Defense and special teams kept Pack in game, but they couldn't contain Peterson at end; are 2-5 in their last seven games.

        12) Jets-- Lets see how they do against the big boys Thursday.

        11) Eagles-- Got pushed around at home by Giants, how come they never have good receivers? You score 31 at home, you should win....

        10) Falcons-- Probably should be higher on this list; they really run ball well, have knack for getting ahead in games early. Tremendous job coaching by Mr Smith.......great season for Arthur Blank

        9) Redskins-- Someone please explain to me how they're home dog to the Cowboys this week? Anyone?

        8) Patriots-- Matt Cassel is going to be very rich next spring, unless the infection stays in Brady's knee, and the Patriots have to keep him around. No one will want to play Patriots in January......

        7) Cardinals-- Two-time MVP Kurt Warner was 32-42/328 Monday and Redbirds are headed to playoffs, where they will be a very tough out. Could a third MVP send Kurt to Canton?

        6) Panthers-- Will be watching Delhomme closely after just a dismal 7-27 passing day in Oakland, with four INTs. How do they get the Raiders and Lions on consecutive Sundays? Must be nice........

        5) Steelers-- Still not sure why they haven't put FieldTurf down at Heinz Field- they had carpet at Three Rivers for 35 years, and they seemed to do OK. Grass becomes a mess in multi-use facilities.

        4) Colts-- Peyton Manning is carrying them on his back, and with a less than 100% knee. You can see how Marvin Harrison has lost a half-step and it is killing his timing with Manning.

        3) Ravens-- They finally have an offense, ane the defense is as tough as ever. They've won three road games in last four weeks, and are on road again this week-- quite a run for rookie coach and rookie QB.

        2) Giants-- All of a sudden media types are appearing on talk shows, saying how they knew Eli Manning was the next Unitas when he got drafted; this time LY, he threw three picks for TDs vs Minnesota- a lot of those media types thought he was the next Shug Chumbler.

        1) Titans-- Every week, you hear, "I think this is the week they will lose." Meawhile, they're 9-0 and their second half schedule isn't real difficult. You read more about Dallas than the Titans. Too bad.

Miami OH has six seniors on this squad, and are picked atop Eastern half of MAC by Sporting News. They beat Xavier, Misssissippi State and Illinois LY, so they're pretty good, and they survived a tough game with Weber State, Ben Howland's alma mater, last night. UCLA has been in three straight Final Fours, but has to replace 48% of its scoring, 46% of its rebounding from LY- they're 45-9 in Pac-10 last three years, but are weaker now (so is the Pac-10). Bruins crushed Prairie View last nite, but they did have 23 turnovers, so this could be a better early season game than you'd think.

Pick 'n' Roll: best NBA bets
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Denver Nuggets at Cleveland Cavaliers (-5.5, 200)

Drafted two picks apart five years ago, LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony have developed a friendly rivalry even though their teams only see each other twice a season.

With three 41-point performances in his last four games, James and the Cavaliers will try to extend their winning streak to six on Wednesday when they welcome in the Nuggets, who are looking for their sixth victory in a row over Cleveland.

James got off to a rather pedestrian start in 2008-09, scoring only 19.7 points per game as Cleveland began the season 1-2. Over his last five games, however, he's reverted back to form. James has averaged 35.8 points in leading the Cavaliers to five straight victories, and he's scored exactly 41 points in three of his last four games.

When James and Anthony have gone head-to-head though, the results have been rather one-sided. Denver has won five straight and eight of 10 meetings with Cleveland, winning twice last season by an average of 26.0 points.

Denver started the season 1-3, but has won three straight since acquiring a new running mate for Anthony (23.6 ppg). The Nuggets dealt Allen Iverson to Detroit on Nov. 3 in a trade that landed them former NBA finals MVP Chauncey Billups, and they've yet to lose with him in the lineup.

Billups is certainly familiar with the Cavaliers, having faced them four times a season - and twice in the playoffs - while with the Pistons. He averaged just 8.5 points against Cleveland last season.

                      Pick: Nuggets

Detroit Pistons at Golden State Warriors (NA)

Allen Iverson and the Pistons go for their second win in a row on Thursday night when their four-game western swing takes them to Golden State for a matchup with the Warriors.

Iverson lost his first two games with Detroit after coming over from Denver in the Chauncey Billups trade on Nov. 3, but played a big part in his first win with his new teammates on Tuesday. Iverson had 30 points, nine assists and seven rebounds in the Pistons' 100-92 victory over Sacramento.

"It was a huge lift off of me," Iverson said. "I knew it would happen. You think every game you go out and play it's going to happen. It feels good. I wanted to get the monkey off my back. I'm just excited that I got my first win and I can now try to get a lot more."

Tayshaun Prince, who had 26 points and 11 rebounds against the Kings, has thrived playing alongside Iverson, averaging 22.7 points and 10 boards.

Detroit (5-2) will have to wait at least another game for backcourt reinforcements as Rodney Stuckey will miss a second straight game after undergoing tests for dizziness.

Golden State (3-5) also snapped a two-game losing streak on Tuesday with a 113-110 win over Minnesota in overtime.

Stephen Jackson scored six of his 30 points in the extra session and improved his scoring average at Oracle Arena to 28.0 points this season - significantly higher than his 18.5 points per game on the road.

Detroit has won three of four at Golden State, including last season's victory where it overcame a 22-point deficit.

                      Pick: Detroit

                        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Islanders at Ottawa Senators (-235, 5.5)

There wasn’t much for Sens backers to like about Tuesday’s shutout loss to the Canadiens. Craig Hartsburg’s club put up little fight against its division rival during the 4-0 shellacking.

After the game, Hartsburg defended his regular punching bag and star centre - Jason Spezza.

“I thought Jason played hard, he competed and he had some chances,” the Senators coach told the Ottawa Sun. “If he plays that hard every night, he’ll have no complaints from me.”

Spezza’s days in the Canadian capital may be numbered. General manager Bryan Murray has long been frustrated by the playmaker’s inconsistent effort and there are rumours floating around that the former Ice Dog could be traded this season.

A match against the Islanders should provide the confidence the Sens sorely need.

                        Pick: Senators

Los Angeles Kings at Dallas Stars (-190, 5.5)

The Kings and Stars finish a home-and-home series tonight in Dallas. Los Angeles won Tuesday night in a shootout, boosting its win streak to three games.

The California club finished last season tied for the fewest points (71) and hasn’t won three consecutive matches since last January.

“It’s great,” winger Alexander Frolov told the Los Angeles Times after the victory. “I think we get some confidence now.”

Dallas received some good news Wednesday afternoon when the team was told captain Brenden Morrow would not be suspended for his instigator penalty at the end of Tuesday’s contest.

Expect the Stars to rebound with a home win against the lowly Kings.

                        Pick: Stars
