    Trends and Indexes
    Wednesday, November 12

Good Luck on day #317 of 2008!

For College and the NFL, look for separate threads:

    • “NCAA Week 12 Trends and Indexes 11/11 through 11/15”
    • “NFL Week 11 Trends and Indexes 11/13 and 11/17”

For now, the balance of the sports menu in this thread will consist of the NBA, College Basketball, the NHL, and the Canadian Football League until their seasons are played out. Also, general sports news and notes will still be posted here.

    NOTE:
As information becomes available, we will attempt to post the trends and indexes as soon as possible.
Information is posted from what we believe are reliable sources.

    Daily Sports Roundup

    Wednesday, November 12

The Celtics will be looking to continue their red-hot start to the season on Wednesday, while there are two college football games on tap. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

The top college football team in action on Wednesday night? That'd be 7-2 (5-3 ATS) Central Michigan, who'll take on 5-4 (5-3 ATS) Northern Illinois. The Chippewas have won five games in a row, and they slipped past Indiana 37-34 last time out. The Huskies had their three-game winning streak snapped last game, falling 45-14 to Ball State. The oddsmakers have Northern Illinois listed as a 3-point favorite, with the total at 48 points.

The most lucrative football team in action on Wednesday night? That'd be 6-2-1 ATS (3-6 SU) Temple, who'll take on 1-6-1 ATS (2-7 SU) Kent. The Owls have won two of their past four games, but they fell 33-27 to Navy last time out (covering the 8-point spread). The Golden Flashes have lost five of their last six contests, and they're coming off a 45-30 defeat versus Bowling Green. Temple is a 3-point favorite, with the total at 45 points.

    Other Notable Events

The Celtics play host to the Hawks on Wednesday night, looking to pick up their eighth win in nine contests. Boston is currently on a five-game winning streak, and they came back to beat the Raptors 94-87 on Monday night. Paul Pierce exploded for 36 points against Toronto, while Kevin Garnett picked up 21 points and 10 boards in the contest.

There are 10 other NBA games on the schedule for Wednesday night, including the Lakers on the road in New Orleans. Rounding out the slate: Philadelphia at Toronto, Indiana at New Jersey, Portland at Miami, San Antonio at Milwaukee, Orlando at Oklahoma City, Utah at Washington, New York at Memphis, and Sacramento at the Clippers. Also, the Rockets will be on the road on Wednesday night to take on the Suns.

    The Rest of the Schedule

The Canucks host the Avalanche on Wednesday night in one of seven games on the NHL schedule. Vancouver has won three games in a row, with goaltender Roberto Luongo posting a shutout in each of those victories. Also hitting the ice: St. Louis at Buffalo, Washington at Carolina, the Rangers at New Jersey, Phoenix at Columbus, and Tampa Bay at Florida. As well, the Bruins will head west to Chicago to play the Hawks.

Finally, the Coaches vs. Cancer tournament will continue to tip off the college basketball schedule on Wednesday. UCLA takes on Prairie View A&M in one of the day's contests.

    News from the Wire

Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell could return to action from his knee injury this weekend; Andrew Walter played in the team's 17-6 loss to the Panthers in Week 10 . . . the Seahawks are expected to have Matt Hasselbeck (back and leg injuries) return to the field this week, sending Seneca Wallace back to the bench . . . Rams quarterback Marc Bulger was benched in their Week 10 loss, but he'll be the starter again this week.

    A Peek at the Future

Thursday's college football slate: Buffalo at Akron (-2.5), Virginia Tech at Miami (-4), and Wyoming at Utah (-8.5) . . . there are just three NBA games on tap for Thursday, with Denver at Cleveland, Dallas at Chicago, and Detroit at Golden State . . . the Coaches vs. Cancer tournament's semi-final round is set for November 20 at Madison Square Garden in New York, with the championship game tipping off on November 21.

      Six-pack for Wednesday

If I were 18 again, the six colleges I would consider to attend........let me say up front I wasn't exactly America's finest college student, so academics aren't a consideration on this list.

      6) UC Santa Barbara-- You walk across the street from the campus center and thru a parking lot and you're on the beach, staring at the Pacfic Ocean. Must be hard to study there.

      5) Arizona State-- Let me see, they all have four major sports out in the desert, great weather, and spring training baseball, too. Golf courses everywhere, another place where studying would be tough.

      4) San Jose State-- Get a BART pass and go to all the A's games; I could study while they're on the road. Yeah, right.

      3) Nevada-Reno-- Just in case I ever got nostalgic for snow, I hear that it occasionally snows in the Reno/Lake Tahoe area. Also hear that gambling is legal there, too, a bigger consideration.

      2) San Diego State-- Doubt that I would ever get nostalgic for snow.

      1) UNLV-- Going to college in America's favorite city? Priceless.

Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..........

        13) Good news in Oakland is that Matt Holliday will replace eight suspects who roamed leftfield in the Coliseum last year, with Jack Cust, a dismal fielder, the guy with the most starts in LF. No more, at least not until 2010, when Holliday bolts for the big money.

        12) Bad news in Oakland is that the Raiders have been outscored in the first half of their last three games, 57-0; not only that, but today, Al Davis took playcalling duties away from offensive coordinator Greg Knapp, turning up the chaos button just a little bit more.

        11) Five of the nine guys at the World Series of Poker final table are in their 20's, as the average age of problem gamblers gets lower. For every 22-year old who cashes in for $9M, there are 1,000 or so who blew their college tuition or food money trying to get rich quick.

        10) North Carolina's hoop team got all 103 first-place votes in polls conducted by Associated Press and USA Today; thats more support than the Florida Gators got the year they defended their title.

        9) This is how fragile success is in the NFL; Detroit Lions are 1-16 in their last 17 games, but before that skid began, Lions were 6-2 at the halfway mark last season, and appeared headed to a playoff berth.

        8) Arizona Cardinals have gotten sloppy, committing 39 penalties in their last four games, after committing 32 in their first five games. As the second half of season progresses, Cardinals have to tighten up, or they won't last long in the playoffs.

        7) Presbyterian College is new to D-I basketball, playing in the Big South Conference; their school's teams are known as the Blue Hose, one of the more unique nicknames in college basketball.

        6) Wade Phillips started his tenure in Dallas 12-1, but is 6-7 since, as the assistant coaches Bill Parcells signed for Miami has taken a toll-- they were the better teachers on the Dallas staff, apparently........

        5) Reality star Kendra Wilkinson (Girls Next Door) is engaged to the Eagles' wide receiver, Hank Baskett, the best catch he's made in 2008.

        4) Arizona Diamondbacks cut 31 front office positions after season ended, a 9% reduction in staff.

        3) Think about this: ESPN analyst Jim Donnan played QB over 40 years ago at NC State; he played against Penn State in the first year that Joe Paterno coached the Nittany Lions. Donnan is already done with a terrific coaching career that saw him lead Marshall, Georgia, but JoePa is still going strong. An amazing career.

        2) ESPN's fascination with Bob Knight continues, as they signed the former coach to a deal that will have him as a game analyst on some Thursday night games this winter. Have to admit it will be interesting to hear him dissect games live, without Dick Vitale interrupting.

        1) The upcoming Maui Classic is loaded, with North Carolina, Texas, Notre Dame, Oregon and Alabama in the eight-team field.

              Tips and Trends
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Portland Trail Blazers at Miami Heat [ESPN | 8 PM ET]

Blazers: Portland opened a five-game road trip on Monday with a 106-99 victory at Orlando. However, the Blazers could be without leading scorer Brandon Roy, who scored a team-high 27 points against the Magic. Roy left the game with back spasms and missed Tuesday's practice. The team did get some good news though, as C Greg Oden has been practicing and could make his return against the Heat. Portland head coach Nate McMillan said Joel Pryzbilla will continue to start, but Oden appears ready to contribute off the bench.

Road team is 8-3 ATS in the last 11 meetings.
The UNDER is 8-3 in Portland's last 11 road games.

Key Injuries - G Brandon Roy (back spasms) is questionable.
C Greg Oden (foot) is doubtful.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Heat (NA): Miami will be trying to start 4-0 at home for the first time in franchise history and hopes to return to dominant form there following a close call on Monday. The Heat have won their first three home games by an average of 18 points, but they had to rally back to beat the Nets, 99-94. They trailed by 10 points a little more than halfway through the fourth quarter before outscoring New Jersey 26-11 the rest of the way. “Did you see the fourth? I mean, wow,” Miami rookie F Michael Beasley said. “(Dwyane Wade’s) such a great player and he showed again tonight, even when he’s sluggish for the first two, three quarters, he’s going to finish with a bang.” Wade scored 19 of his game-high 33 points in the fourth quarter.

Heat are 8-3-1 ATS in their last 12 games overall.
The UNDER is 7-2 in Miami's last 9 home games.

Key Injuries - F Shawn Marion (groin) is day-to-day.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Houston Rockets at Phoenix Suns [ESPN | 10:30 PM ET]

Rockets: Houston has not been nearly as good defensively this year despite adding Ron Artest in the offseason. While the Rockets are surrendering an average of 92.6 points per game, that includes wins over Memphis, Oklahoma City and the LA Clippers - teams that are a combined 5-17. They are giving up 104.3 points per game in their other four games against quality opponents. Defense will likely be the key to this game, as the Suns are 6-0 when scoring more than 95 points this season.

Rockets are 2-9 ATS in the last 11 meetings.
The OVER is 3-1 in Houston's last 4 games overall.

Key Injuries - F Shane Battier (foot) is day-to-day.

PROJECTED SCORE: 97 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

Suns (-3.5, O/U 194): Phoenix has adjusted well to new head coach Terry Porter's offense with the team still among the league leaders at 103.3 points per game. In fact, Porter is off to the best start of any coach in franchise history at 6-2. The Suns got a season-high 50 points from their bench in a 107-102 win over Memphis on Monday behind 27 from Leandro Barbosa and 13 from Boris Diaw. “It was the first time that I was doing well and I felt like I could go to the basket and I could shoot,” Barbosa said. “My teammates were helping me and the coach was helping me, too, and it was great.”

Favorite is 7-3 ATS in the last 10 meetings.
The OVER is 6-2 in Phoenix's last 8 games overall.

              Key Injuries - NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: 101

Pick ‘n’ Roll: Best NBA bets
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Philadelphia vs. Toronto

The Raptors catch the Sixers in a back-to-back spot Wednesday night in Toronto, which is good news for Toronto bettors.

Philadelphia is 0-2 in the second game of back-to-back situations in this early season and both defeats came on the road. The Sixers might have a better shot at winning in Toronto after playing a depleted Utah squad Tuesday night at home.

Then again, Philly can’t score. The under is 5-1 in Sixers games this season and they’ve managed to score more than 88 points in only two of their games. It’s so bad, coaches put white X’s on the court in Monday’s practice to help the players get back to basics and get used to spacing around forward Elton Brand.

                Pick:TBA

                L.A. Lakers vs. New Orleans

The Lakers are off to the kind of start you draw up on the blackboard before the season begins and only hope it comes to fruition. Los Angeles leads the league in scoring offense, scoring defense and they’re 5-0 with five convincing victories so far.

Things are about to get tougher, though. They face their first back-to-back road games Tuesday and Wednesday night when they tip off with the Mavericks before traveling to New Orleans.

The Hornets probably aren’t the team you want to face second in this situation. They’re an up-tempo team that likes to move the ball and fast break and they’ve topped the 100-point total in four of their six games this season.

Hornets guard Chris Paul also has six straight double-doubles to start the season, setting the NBA record with a win over Miami Saturday night.

                Pick: TBA

                    Wednesday, November 12

Northeastern held its last 14 opponents to less than 70 points- they had solid 73-60 win vs IUPUI last night. Huskies lost dozen games LY by five points or less, are expected to be in top half of CAA this season. . Michigan was 8-22 in its last 30 games LY, losing to Northwestern and Harvard- they don't have the right players for Beilein's system yet.

Southern Illinois was tied at half with a D-II team last night- they've got three starters back from 18-15 team that was first Saluki squad in seven years to miss NCAAs. UMass has new coach in former Memphis aide Kellogg, the old UMass point guard from their glory years- they'll use the Wallberg dribble/penetrate offense. Minutemen beat up on D-II team last night. This is the best of the four lined games on tonight's card.

Weber State lost three starters from 16-14 team and is picked #5 in the Big Sky, low for them. Miami OH has more depth than usual this year, and has Coach Coles back after he was sick in second half of last year. Red Hawks have six seniors on this squad, and are picked atop Eastern half of MAC by Sporting News. They beat Xavier, Misssissippi State and Illinois LY, so they're pretty good.

UCLA has been in three straight Final Fours, but has to replace 48% of its scoring, 46% of its rebounding from LY- they're 45-9 in Pac-10 last three years, but are weaker now (so is the Pac-10). Prairie View is 9th pick in 10-team SWAC, one of weakest D-I leagues in country- they've got three starters back from an 8-22 team. Supposedly, some of the new kids are better shooters- they expect to be better this season, but this is a very difficult spot for them.
