    Trends and Indexes
    Tuesday, November 11

Good Luck on day #316 of 2008!

For College and the NFL, look for separate threads:

    • “NCAA Week 12 Trends and Indexes 11/11 through 11/15”
    • “NFL Week 11 Trends and Indexes 11/13, 11/16 and 11/17”

For now, the balance of the sports menu in this thread will consist of the NBA, College Basketball, the NHL, and the Canadian Football League until their seasons are played out. Also, general sports news and notes will still be posted here.

    NOTE:
As information becomes available, we will attempt to post the trends and indexes as soon as possible.
Information is posted from what we believe are reliable sources.

    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, November 11

Ball State continues their assault on the rankings on Tuesday, while the Penguins meet the Red Wings at the rink. Here's a look at the schedule in your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

Ball State isn't going to get a chance to play in the national championship game, but they still have a chance to finish the season undefeated. The Cardinals blasted Northern Illinois 45-14 last time out to improve their record to 9-0 straight-up and a bettor-friendly 7-1 against-the-spread. That also put them at No. 14 in the latest AP poll.

Looking to prevent Ball State from reaching 10-0 on Tuesday night will be Miami-Ohio, but they've lost seven of their nine games this season to sit at 2-7 straight-up and just 3-5 against-the-spread. The RedHawks were beaten 37-17 by Buffalo in their last contest.

The oddsmakers like Ball State's chances of running away with this game against their lowly Mid-American conference opponent, as they were opened as 16-point road faves.

    Other Notable Events

On the ice the Penguins will travel to Detroit for a Tuesday night game against the Red Wings. Pittsburgh, of course, was knocked off by Detroit in last year's Stanley Cup final, but they've won three straight games to start their November schedule. The Red Wings are also unbeaten in November, picking up a pair of wins over the Canucks and Devils.

There are five other games on the NHL's schedule for Tuesday, including an afternoon contest between the Flyers and Islanders on Long Island. As well, it's Ottawa at Montreal, Toronto at Calgary, Dallas at Los Angeles, and finally Nashville at San Jose.

    The Rest of the Schedule

The San Antonio Spurs host the New York Knicks in NBA action on Tuesday night, and both teams have unexpected records at this point in the season. The Knicks knocked off Utah 107-99 on Sunday to improve to 4-2 through six games. The Spurs, meanwhile, fell 99-83 to Miami in their last contest and limp into Tuesday night with a mark of 1-4.

Also on the NBA's schedule for Tuesday: Milwaukee at Cleveland, Utah at Philadelphia, Denver at Charlotte, Atlanta at Chicago, Detroit at Sacramento, and Minnesota at Golden State. The Lakers are also in action; they'll be on the road taking on the Mavs.

Finally, the Coaches vs. Cancer college hoops tournament continues on Tuesday, with Southern Illinois, Michigan, and Duke the most notable teams taking to the hardwood.

    News from the Wire

Spurs guard Tony Parker is expected to miss the next month of action because of a sprained ankle . . . Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is expected to start for the team in Week 11 . . . Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger played through his sore shoulder on Sunday afternoon, but he was picked off three times in the team's loss to the Colts . . . Thrashers goaltender Kari Lehtonen hasn't played since October 30 due to an illness.

    A Peek at the Future

Other college football games coming up during the week include Virginia Tech at Miami and Wyoming at UNLV on Thursday, and Cincinnati at Louisville on Friday . . . the Patriots opened as 4-point home favorites to win their Thursday night meeting with the Jets, with the total at 41 points . . . Jimmie Johnson has a nearly-insurmountable lead in the Sprint Cup standings heading into Sunday's season finale at Homestead-Miami.

      Six-pack for Tuesday

According to Yahoo.com, these six jobs are ones that the happiest people in America claim to have; nobody consulted me on these....

-- Clergy-- Median salary, $44,102. Unfortunately, these people have to work weekends. No one should have to work weekends.

-- Firemen, $45,553-- Where I live, we have a terrific group of guys who volunteer to do this job, but no matter what, what guts it takes to go into a burning building to try and save people!!!!!

-- Travel Agents, $14.23/hour-- Seems like a fun job, helping folks plan their vacations; wonder if there are any perks, such as going on vacations for discounts?

-- Architects, $54,079-- Wilbur Post was an architect on the old TV show Mr Ed; so was the dad on the Brady Bunch, and Tom Hanks in Sleepless in Seattle. Maybe this really is a fun job.

-- Special Ed Teachers, $43,060- Must be rewarding helping kids to learn; plus, as we know, they get summers off-- life is good.......

-- Airline Pilots/Navigators, $63,000- Get to travel for free, hang out on road with flight attendants, you're damn right they're happy.

Tuesday's List of 13: Random thoughts on Veteran's Day

        13) I was all set to do my NFL List of 13 today, until I got an e-mail at work from friend on Long Island; it said, "Matt Holliday has been traded to your Oakland A's." After the Rams lost 47-3 Sunday, did not need having my balls busted by aspiring comics, but this was the real deal, as the unpredictable A's go from a glorified farm team to a player in the free agent market. Is this a great country or what?

        12) Four months ago today, the A's were nine games over .500, on the fringe of contending for a Wild Card spot; then they traded both Rich Harden and Joe Blanton, their two best pitchers, for prospects and the season went in the ashcan in a very big way. Depressing is not a strong enough word to describe the season's last eight weeks.

        11) Billy Beane knows what he is doing; he seldom makes just one move, so more (Rafael Furcal?) are coming, but what in the name of Charles Oscar Finley are the A's doing? My best guess? Because of the economy, the stadium the A's want to build in Fremont is not a sure thing-- winning helps these things along (just ask the Rays).

        10) So the A's will increase their payroll to about $80M for this year try like hell to win, then take the two draft picks they get after 2009, when Holliday walks (he turned down $68M for four years from the Rockies, so no way in hell would he sign with the A's) build a team and hope the new stadium gets built in time for the 2011 season.

        9) Supposedly the three players going to Colorado are Greg Smith, a decent lefty starter, Carlos Gonzalez, who is a terrific fielder, but did not show much power with Oakland and struggling closer Huston Street, whom Colorado is rumored to be flipping to another team.

        8) Free agent signings start Thursday, so things will get interesting in a hurry later this week. For once, the A's are front and center as the buyers, not the sellers. Its about damn time. Good for Lewis Wulff, who owns the club and was a college frat buddy of Bud Selig.

        7) Each First Family gets $100,000 to decorate the White House as they see fit; apparently, the bowling alley that George Bush had will be transformed into a basketball court for the new President.

        6) Two-time MVP Kurt Warner was 32-42/328 passing as Cardinals survived their own sloppy play (10 penalties and allowed kick return for TD) and outlasted the 49ers 29-24 Monday night. Arizona is a playoff team, now they have to fight hard for the home field.

        5) No head coach in NFL history has gotten more praise than Mike Singletary has, before he's even won one game. The guy hasn't been a football coach very long; this isn't an entry-level job. Matchup of the two interim coaches in NFC West this week: Singletary vs Haslett, with their two dreadful teams facing off on Candlestick Point. Both have lot of work to do before they lose their interim tags, if they do.

        4) The top 125 on the PGA Tour money list keep their card for the 2009 season; to be in the top 125, you needed to earn $852,732, an increase of around $170,000 from last season.

        3) Mike D'Antoni's Knicks are off to a 4-2 start, are fun to watch, as they actually pass the ball and play together, unlike the unseemly Isiah Thomas Knicks, who played like a bad City League team. The Knicks visit a crippled Spurs team in the Alamo Tuesday.

        2) Marlins traded couple of decent players to division rival Nationals when they dealt Josh Willingham and lefty starter Scott Olsen to the nation's capitol, for package of players that includes Emilio Bonifacio a second base prospect who hit .240 for Washington this year. After a surprising 84-77 season, Florida has now dealt three key players.

        1) Strange word out of Seattle, where Mariners will interview seven managerial candidates this week, none of whom have any experience at the big league level. Guess they want a guy who will work cheap.

National Basketball Association - Tips & Trends

              NBA

We will repost when projected scores and lines are available.

              Tuesday, November 11

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
              Tips and Trends
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Lakers at Dallas Mavericks [8:30 PM ET]

Lakers (NA): LA is 5-0 for the third time under head coach Phil Jackson, but it's how easily the team is winning games this year that has caught the attention of league insiders. The Lakers are winning by an average of 22.4 points per game with the next closest team winning by less than half that margin. Moving Lamar Odom to the bench has given them one of the biggest frontcourts in the NBA with Pau Gasol shifting to power forward. Gasol has averaged 14 rebounds in the last three games, and he will likely take the assignment of guarding Dirk Nowitzki.

Lakers are 22-10-1 ATS in their last 33 road games.
The UNDER is 7-2 in LA's last 9 games vs. Western Conference.

              Key Injuries - NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Mavs: Dallas is in danger of falling to 0-3 at home with a loss to the Lakers, and the team's defensive struggles will be put to a serious test here. The Mavs have allowed four of their six opponents to score 100 points, and the previously winless Clippers managed to shoot a season-high 49 percent against them in a 103-92 loss on Sunday. "We’re giving up a lot of points, so I don’t know where we stand defensively," Dallas point guard Jason Kidd said. "When you give up that many points, it’s hard to win."

Mavs are 3-9 ATS in their last 12 home games.

Key Injuries - The UNDER is 9-3 in Dallas' last 12 home games.
F Josh Howard (wrist) is questionable.
F Devean George (hand) is questionable.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Detroit Pistons at Sacramento Kings [10 PM ET]

Pistons (NA): The arrival of Allen Iverson has yet to translate to a win for Detroit, and the team will likely still spend the next few weeks adjusting to his style of play. Rip Hamilton missed all eight shots he took from the field in an 88-76 loss to Boston on Sunday while Iverson totaled 10 points and four assists. The Pistons do not have much depth in the backcourt right now since Rodney Stuckey did not travel with them to Sacramento, and they are also lacking a proven scorer inside after dealing Antonio McDyess to Denver to get Iverson. McDyess was waived by the Nuggets on Monday and is expected to re-join Detroit, but he needs to wait 30 days.

Pistons are 11-5 ATS in their last 16 games vs. Pacific Division.
The UNDER is 8-2-2 in the last 12 meetings.

Key Injuries - G Rodney Stuckey (dizziness) is OUT.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Kings: The status of leading scorer Kevin Martin remains up in the air after he re-injured his ankle in a 115-98 win over Golden State on Sunday. Martin scored 27 points but left at the end of the third quarter, and his MRI exam turned up negative. If Martin does not play, Sacramento will need John Salmons and Spencer Hawes to continue to step up. Hawes is averaging 12.9 points and 8.4 rebounds in his second year out of Washington.

Kings are 12-5 ATS in their last 17 games overall.
The UNDER is 10-4 in Sacramento's last 14 home games. G

Key Injuries - Kevin Martin (ankle) is questionable.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Georgia Southern lost three starters from LY's 20-12 club that was good on perimeter but will rely on JC transfers underneath. Eagles beat UAB and lost at Florida by 3 LY, so they can play; they beat Houston by a hoop yesterday, a terrific win for the Southern Conference school, while Duke clubbed a helpless Presbyterian team in a game that didn't sell out Cameron Indoor, which isn't that big. Still too early to be doing much in college hoops, except gathering knowledge on the different teams.

Pick 'n' Roll: Tuesday's best NBA bets
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Knicks at San Antonio Spurs (-3.5, 196)

The 1-4 Spurs are off to their worst start in 12 years and now they’ll have to complete for the next month without two of their three best players. They're desperately missing Manu Ginobili it won’t get any easier with Tony Parker joining him on the pine.

San Antonio will struggle to fill the hoop with its two best perimeter players on the bench. Parker scored a career high 55 points last week against the Timberwolves and Ginobili has always been the Spurs’ most consistent scorer.

"I don't know what it is,” All-Star forward Tim Duncan said while trying to explain San Antonio’s poor play. "I don't even know what to say.”

San Antonio will probably get its second win of the season, but this should be a brickfest between two struggling clubs. The under has cashed in 10 of the Spurs’ last 13 games.

                          Pick: Under

Detroit Pistons at Sacramento Kings (NA)

Kevin Martin and the rest of the Kings had a field day in their game against the Warriors Sunday night. Open looks will not come as easily against a much better defensive team in the Pistons. To make matters worse for the home team, Martin is expected to miss the next week after he left late in the Sunday’s game with an ankle injury.

Allen Iverson's welcome party was spoiled by the Boston Celtics pushing Detroit’s record to 0-2 since acquiring the flashy guard. The Pistons lost by 12 points to the reigning champs despite opening as a small home favorite. Iverson had four assists, committed four turnovers and finished with just 10 points while shooting 36 percent against a stifling Boston defense. His backcourt teammate, Richard Hamilton, was even worse failing to knock down one of his eight shots.

The under has been the right total play in eight of the last 12 meetings between these two teams.

                          Pick: Under

                            Toronto vs. Calgary (-150, 5.5)

The Flames are happy to be back at home, but what they could really use is a rest. Calgary will play its fourth game in six nights on Tuesday, which included back-to-back road games against Nashville and Chicago over the weekend.

To make matters worse, there is a flu bug running through the team. Head coach Mike Keenan refused to use that as an excuse after Sunday’s 6-1 loss to Chicago, but it’s hard to think the team wasn’t affected.

The Flames’ penalty kill has been one of the biggest problems lately. They’ve allowed five goals on the PK in their last four games. The Leafs can’t exactly scoff at those numbers, though. They’ve allowed seven goals in their last four games on the penalty kill.

                            Pick: over

                            Pittsburgh vs. Detroit (-185, 5.5)

The Pens and Wings meet for the first time since Detroit finished off Pittsburgh in six games in last year’s Stanley Cup finals.

Pittsburgh comes into this one on a three-game winning streak, while Detroit has won seven of its last nine. The Pens have finally found their scoring touch after struggling at the beginning of the season. They’ve scored 14 goals in their last three (not including a shootout) and over bettors profited in each of those.

A big reason for the resurgence is Pittsburgh’s skating. The club is playing at a higher tempo lately and has been able to generate more scoring chances. Evgeni Malkin now leads the league in points with 21.

Pittsburgh should see solid value Tuesday night due to the fact the Wings have only lost once at home in regulation this season - a 3-2 defeat to the Leafs in their first game of the year.

                            Pick: Pittsburgh
