    Daily Sports Roundup

    Monday, November 10

Kurt Warner and his Arizona Cardinals will be looking to tag the San Francisco 49ers for yet another loss on Monday Night Football. Here's a look in your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

The Niners have been in a tailspin over the past month and a half, losing five games in a row and changing head coaches and starting quarterbacks. San Francisco's latest loss came two weeks ago against Seattle, when they fell 34-13 at home. J.T. O'Sullivan posted a QB rating of just 59.8 in that game; Shaun Hill will be the starter Monday night.

The Cardinals have won three of their last four games, getting past Buffalo, Dallas, and St. Louis while dropping a decision to Carolina two weeks ago. Warner continued his strong play in the team's 34-13 win over the Rams last time out, going 23-of-34 for 342 yards passing with two touchdowns. Tim Hightower had a score and 109 rushing yards.

Arizona is listed as a 9.5-point home favorite for Monday night, with the total at 46.5 points. The Cardinals are 5-3 straight-up, 6-2 against-the-spread, and 5-3 on the OVER/UNDER so far this year. The Niners are at 2-6, 2-6, and 4-4 in their eight games.

    Other Notable Events

Winners of four of their five games so far in November, the Phoenix Suns will play host to the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday night. The Suns knocked off the Milwaukee Bucks 104-86 on the road last time out, with Shaquille O'Neal scoring 29 points and grabbing 11 boards. Amare Stoudemire picked up 24 points, and Steve Nash tossed in 16 points.

There are four other games on the NBA's Monday schedule, including an Atlantic battle between the Raptors and Celtics in Boston - both those teams also played on Sunday. Also on tap: Oklahoma City at Indiana, Portland at Orlando, and New Jersey at Miami.

    The Rest of the Schedule

There are just two games on the ice on Monday night, with Edmonton at the Rangers and Tampa Bay at Washington. The Capitals are 7-4-2 on the season despite getting minimal contributions from Alexander Ovechkin (two goals in 11 games) and Jose Theodore (.877 save percentage). The Lightning are hoping top draft pick Steve Stamkos can get on a roll this week - he has just four points in 13 games this season.

As well, college basketball gets going on Monday, with a pair of games in the annual Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament. Georgia Southern will take on Houston at 4:00pm ET, while it'll be Presbyterian at Duke at 7:00. Both games are at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

    News from the Wire

T Mike Gandy, CB Eric Green, DE Travis LaBoy, TE Ben Patrick, and TE Leonard Pope are all QUESTIONABLE for the Cardinals for Monday night. WR Sean Morey and TE Jerame Tuman are PROBABLE . . . WR Arnaz Battle, S Dashon Goldson, and T Barry Sims are all OUT for the Niners. LB Roderick Green is QUESTIONABLE, and each of T Jonas Jennings, DE Ray McDonald, and TE Delanie Walker are listed as PROBABLE.

    A Peek at the Future

The Lakers play in Dallas on Tuesday night, while the Pistons will be on the court in Sacramento . . . the Flyers and Islanders play an NHL matinee on Tuesday . . . unbeaten Ball State takes on Miami-Ohio in college football action on Tuesday . . . this week's Thursday Night Football matchup sees the Jets playing the Patriots in New England . . . the Sprint Cup Series ends its 2008 season with the Ford 400 on Sunday.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday...................

        13) There's an old saying-- "If you have nothing good to say, say nothing at all" so my remarks on the Rams will be brief, but I did come up with an idea that could upgrade their QB position next year. Why not acquire Mr Vick, after he gets out of prison? He's ten times better than Marc Bulger........

        12) I've been a Ram fan since 1966 and this was the worst performance in any one game that I saw-- it was 40-0 at the half. I still think Coach Haslett is good enough to win with, but he needs a 4-3 finish to get his contract. In light of today's nightmare, a 4-3 finish doesn't seem terribly likely.

        11) Then there are the Viking special teams, who allowed their sixth TD of the season Sunday, and at a critical time. Put it this way; Minnesota had a 21-10 and the ball near midfield-- the next time their defense took the field, Green Bay had already scored two TDs. Vikings wound up winning, but of course, nitwits like myself who laid 2.5 points got bupkus.

I know I'm bitter about this, but a note to the Minnesota punter; it is a lot easier to cover your punts if you don't kick them in the middle of the field. Its a tactic called "directional punting". Please google it.

        10) Atlanta averaged 10.8 yards/pass attempt against the Saints, as magical season for the Falcons marches on. Funny thing, Atlanta started three drives in Saint territory and never scored, but they had two TD drives of 80+ yds.

        9) Tom Coughlin had a brilliant replay challenge in third quarter last night, negating an illegal pass against Eli Manning, leading to a Giants' TD. In the history of replay, Coughlin has the best percentage challenging plays.

        8) Tennessee ran ball 29 times for just 20 yards in Chicago but still won to stay unbeaten; this time last year, we were deluged by stories of all things Patriot, but the Titans are flying under the radar, in large part because, just like during the Rays' run to AL pennant, mainstream media is very lazy. It reports the stories that it wants to report-- that ain't the Titans.

        7) Detroit has a legitimate chance to finish this season 0-16, but Miami was 1-15 last year, and look at them now-- thats the beauty of the NFL. All the Lions lack is competent leadership and a lot of good players. It also would help if they didn't start quarterbacks five days after they sign.

        6) Jake Delhomme was 7-27 with four INTs Sunday, a Bulger-like statline, but Carolina can run the ball, so not only did they win in Oakland, they did enough to barely cover the spread. Oakland had three turnovers, 83 yards in penalties and went 2-17 on third down conversions. Not good.

        5) Then there is Herm Edwards, whose Chiefs played their hearts out in a 20-19 loss yesterday; too bad Herm didn't let them finish the job. Instead of kicking the PAT to tie the game with 0:29 left, after a great TD drive, Herm decided to roll the dice and go for two. 1-7 teams don't roll the dice well, so now the Chiefs are 1-8. Thank God Herm doesn't coach the Rams.

        4) Saw some e-mails from Steeler fans ripping Ben Roethlisberger after Colts won in Pittsburgh-- I'll say two things......a) Big Ben is playing with a lot of injured body parts-- he's a warrior.......b) Anytime the Steelers get sick of #7 being their quarterback, I'll hire a limo to take him to St Louis........

        3) Ravens had 27 first downs, 162 rushing yards, 171 passing as they won again. Quite a race for Coach of the Year between Ravens' Harbaugh and the Falcons' Smith. Irony here is that Harbaugh replaced Brian Billick as Ravens coach-- Coach Smith is Billick's brother-in-law.

        2) Someone is going to spend a lot of money on Matt Cassel this winter as a free agent QB, but I'd be hesitant to take anyone from New England's team and expect him to play better than he is now. He just hasn't played a lot of football. To pay a free agent QB big dollars, he has to be better than Cassel. Simply put, I'd much rather have Michael Vick than Cassel.

        1) No more byes, thank goodness. We go back to 16 games a week for the last seven weeks of the season. Should be a lot of fun.

Georgia Southern lost three starters from LY's 20-12 club that was good on perimeter but will rely on JC transfers underneath. Eagles beat UAB and lost at Florida by 3 LY, so they can play. Houston has one starter back from a 24-10 team that made semis of CBI tourney- they won by 15 LY, 84-69, against Charleston, a conference rival of Ga. Southern.

Duke took 309 more 3's than its opponents LY, and 206 more foul shots an odd combination, but they went 28-6 LY, 13-3 in ACC despite being undersized and getting tired as season wore on (even turnover ratio in its last six games). Presbyterian was 5-25 LY as it makes move to D-I play.

The Oil are having a wives-mothers trip on Monday when the ladies of the players’ lives will be joining the team in New York to catch up with their boys. The event comes when Edmonton is reeling after two straight losses and when the team finishes a six-game, eastern road trip.

Defense has suffered in the two defeats, as is often the case at the end of long road trips, and over bettors have now profited in three straight Oilers games. You can expect more scoring Monday night and an inspired Edmonton squad that won’t want to lose in front of the family.

                        Pick: over

                        Tampa Bay vs. Washington

The Capitals need to be wary of a letdown spot when the Lightning come to town Monday night. The club is coming off its “best performance of the year” according to one Washington beat reporter, where the Caps beat the Eastern-Conference leading Rangers 3-1 Saturday night.

Washington pressured New York for nearly every minute of the game and goalie Brent Johnson was solid again in nets for the Caps. Johnson has started three straight games for Washington and has allowed just five goals while posting a .942 save percentage.

With the Lightning coming to town Monday, Johnson could be facing former teammate Olaf Kolzig, who could be in the crease for Tampa Bay.

                        Pick: Washington

Portland Trail Blazers at Orlando Magic (-7, 192)

Orlando (4-2) opened the season by scoring 85 and 84 points in losses to Atlanta and Memphis, respectively, but has since averaged 105.3 points while winning the first four games of this homestand.

Dwight Howard had 31 points and 16 rebounds - both season highs - in a 106-81 victory over Washington on Saturday. The center shot 11-for-13 from the field and also had three blocked shots, bringing his season total to a league-leading 24.

"I've seen him have numbers like that before, but I'm not sure he's played a better game since I've been here," said coach Stan Van Gundy, in his second season with Orlando.

"On top of being dominant physically, which he always is, he was just so patient. He wasn't forcing anything, just letting the game come to him. He looked like a more mature, professional guy down in the low post."

Howard, who is averaging 22.0 points and 13.7 rebounds, said his teammates are making it possible for him to put up the big numbers.

While the Magic seek to complete an unblemished homestand, the Trail Blazers have dropped all three of their road games while winning all three of their contests at home - a pattern they'll seek to change as they open the first of three five-game road trips they'll take this season.

They defeated Minnesota 97-93 at the Rose Garden on Saturday, as LaMarcus Aldridge had 24 points and 13 rebounds and Brandon Roy added 24 points and nine assists.

Injured center Greg Oden (foot) will join the Blazers on the road trip, but it hasn't been decided whether he will play in any of the games. He's been out since injuring himself during Portland's season opener, and was originally expected to miss four-to-six weeks.

                          Pick: Under

Toronto Raptors at Boston Celtics (-8, 183)

If the Boston Celtics were planning on displaying any complacency as they begin defense of their NBA championship, it hasn't showed up yet.

Playing the same outstanding defense that paved the way to the franchise's 17th NBA title in June, the Celtics will look to extend their winning streak to five games on Monday when they host the Atlantic Division rival Toronto Raptors.

Even with the offensive talents of Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen, Boston's hallmark last season was a defense that held opponents to 90.3 points per game. The Celtics (6-1) led the league in field-goal percentage defense (.419) and 3-point percentage defense (.316).

Their latest impressive defensive effort came Sunday on the same floor where they clinched the Eastern Conference title last season. Boston limited Detroit to just 34.7 percent from the field and used a 30-10 second quarter to coast to an 88-76 win over the Pistons.

Toronto (4-2), on the other hand, has been carried by Chris Bosh. The three-time All-Star is third in the league in scoring, averaging 26.7 points - 10.5 more than any other Raptor.

Bosh has led the team in scoring in five of six games, and turned in his best overall effort on Sunday at Charlotte. Bosh scored 30 points - 14 in the fourth quarter - and grabbed a season-high 15 rebounds in Toronto's 89-79 win over the Bobcats.

The lack of productivity coming from center Jemaine O'Neal hasn't hurt the Raptors yet, but the Raps need more production from their other big man against a good teams like the Celtics.

                          Pick: Celtics

A tough stretch that saw the Pacers open against four straight playoff teams should give way tonight against an Oklahoma City team that has dropped five of its first six. Indiana is the pick (-10) according to Dunkel, which has the Pacers favored by 16. Dunkel Pick: Indiana (-10). Here are all of today's games.
