    Daily Sports Roundup

    Sunday, November 9

The Titans will be gunning for their ninth straight victory on Sunday afternoon, while the Giants will have a tough test in Philadelphia. Here's a look in your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

The Titans aren't getting as much press as the perfect Patriots were at this point last season, but 8-0 Tennessee will be looking to stay unbeaten when they play on the road against the 5-3 Bears at 1:00pm ET on Sunday. The oddsmakers have the Titans pegged as 3-point road favorites in this contest, with the total at 38.5 points. Tennessee is 7-0-1 ATS on the season, while Chicago is 4-3-1 versus the line through eight games.

The Packers and Vikings will play an all-NFC North matchup on Sunday at the Metrodome, with 4-4 (3-5 ATS) Minnesota the 2.5-point home favorite against 4-4 (4-3-1 ATS) Green Bay. As well, in an AFC East battle the 5-3 (4-4 ATS) Bills will be trying to upset the 5-3 (4-4 ATS) Pats at Gillette Stadium. New England is favored by 3.5 points.

The rest of the NFL action: New Orleans at Atlanta (-1), Jacksonville (-6.5) at Detroit, Seattle at Miami (-8), St. Louis at the Jets (-9), Baltimore at Houston (pick'em), Carolina (-9.5) at Oakland, Indianapolis at Pittsburgh, and Kansas City at San Diego (-15.5). As well, the Eagles will play host to the Giants on Sunday night as a 3-point home favorite.

    Other Notable Events

There's an opening for Carl Edwards to win the 2008 Sprint Cup, but he'll need to come up huge in the final two races of the season. The first event is Sunday, with the drivers of NASCAR hitting Phoenix International Raceway for the Checker O'Reilly Auto Parts 500. Edwards sits 106 points back of Jimmie Johnson in the driver standings, and he's listed at 5/1 to win in Phoenix. Johnson, who has won the last two Sprint Cup races held at Phoenix, is next at 6/1 odds. Greg Biffle is third on the odds chart; he's pegged at 8/1.

    The Rest of the Schedule

There are eight games in the NBA on Sunday, including a trio of matinees: Toronto at Charlotte, Utah at New York, and Dallas at the Clippers. As well, there are a pair of big conference battles on tap with Boston at Detroit and Houston at the Lakers. Atlanta at Oklahoma City, Memphis at Denver, and Golden State at Sacramento fill out the slate.

Ryan Getzlaf will lead his Ducks onto the ice at home against the Panthers in NHL action on Sunday, while Patrick Kane and the Blackhawks will play host to the Flames. Atlanta and Carolina will renew hostilities in a divisional battle at 3:00pm ET, while it'll be Edmonton at New Jersey and San Jose at Phoenix to round out the Sunday lineup.

    A Peek at the Future

The Monday Night Football matchup sees San Francisco at Arizona, with the Cardinals listed as big 9.5-point home favorites (and the total at 46) . . . there are five games on the NBA's schedule for Monday, including Toronto at Boston and New Jersey at Miami . . . the 2008 Sprint Cup season will come to an end next Sunday at the Ford 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway; Johnson is hoping to have wrapped up the title by then.

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college football Saturday

        13) LSU was 13-34 passing with four INTs, one of which was run back for a TD, but Alabama still needed OT to win in Nick Saban's return to Baton Rouge, 27-21; very tough beat if you bet LSU +3.5, since they blocked a short Bama FG on last play of regulation.

        12) Graham Harrell was 45-55/516 passing in a ridiculous display of offensive football, as Texas Tech clubbed a really good Oklahoma St team, 56-20. Cowboys are now 0-10-2 in Lubbock since 1944.

        11) Last week, Central Michigan beat Indiana; this week, Western Michigan beat Illinois at Ford Field, as MAC teams flex some late season muscle. Some of the bowls with the automatic Big 11 tie-ins are going to be very disappointed with their matchups.

        10) 3-7 Michigan outgained 7-3 Minnesota 435-188 Saturday, and the game was at the Metrodome. Northwestern, Illinois and Penn St all had very disappointing losses. Tough day for the Big 11.

        9) As it stands now, Oregon State holds its destiny in its hands as far as going to the Rose Bowl, but what happens if a rematch with Penn State is in order? No way the Rose Bowl committee would be happy with that matchup, so the Beavers could get screwed out of a trip to Pasadena, since Rose Bowl folks ain't taking Oregon State over Penn State. I hear San Diego (Holiday Bowl) is nice in December.

        8) Notre Dame apparently didn't have a schematic edge over Boston College, as Charlie Weis' Irish got blanked 17-0 on Chestnut Hill. At 5-4, and Stanford its best win, unsure where Notre Dame is going to go bowling- they figure to end the regular season 7-5.

By the way, radio announcer Don Criqui actually said on the air late in the game, "......next week's game with Navy is going to be very hard for the Irish to win...." Good lord, who does he want them to play, .Wofford and Elon? You can't moan about playing a service academy.

        7) Bobby Bowden exacted revenge over Clemson for firing his son when his 7-2 Seminoles whupped up on the erratic Tigers, 41-27, on the elder Bowden's 79th birthday. Pretty good birthday present.

        6) Everyone off Dave Wannstedt's back; Pitt hammered Louisville, 41-7, is on track to go to a damn good bowl game.

        5) Nebraska gave up 76 points at Kansas LY, but beat the Jayhawks 45-35 Saturday; only those of us with fairly good memories can now put a time and date to when Cornhuskers were last a dominant team, and it doesn't look rosy for returning to that status anytime soon.

        4) Its hard to argue right now that Alabama-Texas Tech wouldn't be the national title game, if it were played tomorrow, but the game that most fans would want to see is Oklahoma-Florida, both of whom are in steamroller mode since suffering their only loss of the season.

        3) Wyoming 13, Tennessee 7; 27-point underdog Cowboys gained a total of four yards to get their two TDs, as Vols score less than ten points in four straight games for first time since 1964. If you heard two noises late Saturday night, the first noise you heard was Jon Gruden's cellphone ringing over and over......

        2) West Virginia scored 11 points in the last 0:18 of regulation to tie a game most of their fans had already left, forcing OT, but Cincinnati won the game 26-23, throwing a wrench into the Big East standings.

        1) ...the second sound was cash registers in Knoxville opening to pay for Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly to become the Vols' new mentor. If you like doing alookalikes, Kelly is a dead wringer for the scumweasel sports agent Scott Boras, who might like to have Kelly as a client.

            Tips and Trends
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Celtics at Detroit Pistons [6 PM ET]

Celtics: Boston used outstanding defense against Detroit a year ago in winning the regular-season series along with a second-round playoff series. The Celtics held the Pistons to an average of 87.7 points on 43 percent shooting in nine games. The total went UNDER in seven of those games, and Boston is leading the NBA in defensive field-goal percentage at 38 percent this season.

Celtics are 10-3 ATS in their last 13 games overall.
The UNDER is 9-2 in Boston's last 11 road games.

            Key Injuries - NONE

            PROJECTED SCORE: 92

Pistons (-2, O/U 187): It will be interesting to see how new Detroit guard Allen Iverson adjusts to playing at The Palace of Auburn Hills on a regular basis. Iverson has shot just 40 percent from the field during his career at The Palace despite averaging 24.4 points per game there. He scored 24 points and dished out six assists in his first game in a Pistons uniform on Friday, resulting in a 103-96 loss at New Jersey. Detroit as a team shot a season-low 37 percent from the field against the Nets.

Pistons are 11-4 ATS in their last 15 Sunday games.
The UNDER is 8-2 in the last 10 meetings.

            Key Injuries - NONE

            PROJECTED SCORE: 94

Houston Rockets at Los Angeles Lakers [9:30 PM ET]

Rockets: Houston's Ron Artest is coming off one of his best games with his new team, as he scored 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds in a 92-83 win over the Clippers on Friday. Still, Artest said the team is still not playing up to its potential and can play much better. "We’re still searching to find ourselves," Artest said. "We haven’t played good basketball yet. We need to play 48 minutes consistently. We have a long ways to go, but this was a good test for us. It’s coming together and it’s going to happen."

Rockets are 5-11 ATS in the last 16 meetings.
Rockets are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games overall.

Key Injuries - C Yao Ming (knee) is probable.
F Shane Battier (foot) is day-to-day.

            PROJECTED SCORE: 90

Lakers (-7.5, O/U 188): It's hard to complain about an 18-point win over an opponent, but LA head coach Phil Jackson and star guard Kobe Bryant did just that following a 106-88 rout of the Clippers last Wednesday. "When you don’t shoot the ball well, you’ve got to defend," Bryant said. "That’s what we did." The Lakers held their crosstown rivals to 39 percent shooting, which helped them overcome shooting below 40 percent for the second straight game. "The mantra is that defense wins ballgames, your offense comes and goes," Jackson said. "If you just rely on your offense all the time, it’s going to disappoint you at some level."

Lakers are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games overall.
The UNDER is 6-2 in LA's last 8 home games.

            Key Injuries - NONE

            PROJECTED SCORE: 98

Pick ‘n’ Roll: Best NBA bets
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Boston vs. Detroit (-2, 186.5)

Allen Iverson's debut with the Detroit Pistons wasn't the celebratory occasion the nine-time All-Star hoped it would be. His first game in Detroit as a member of the club figures to be another tough game.

After suffering their first loss in Iverson's debut, the Pistons hope his first home game in their uniform goes differently, though it won't be easy Sunday because they are facing the Boston Celtics in the teams' first meeting since last season's Eastern Conference finals.

The Pistons hope their acquisition of Iverson can yield similar results, but they struggled in his debut Friday night, shooting a season-low 37.3 percent from the field in a 103-96 road loss to New Jersey.

Iverson, though, has not done his best shooting at The Palace of Auburn Hills, where he's averaged 24.4 points while making 40.1 percent from the field.

Boston's defense has been stifling this season, leading the league in opponent's field-goal percentage at 38.0.

              Pick: Celtics

Golden State vs. Sacramento (-3.5, 215)

The Sacramento Kings have been more than happy to welcome back Brad Miller. The Golden State Warriors, meanwhile, seem as if they can't get rid of Al Harrington soon enough.

The Warriors, playing without an injured and unhappy Harrington, look to bounce back from their latest loss when they visit Miller and the Kings on Sunday night.

After missing five games for violating the NBA's drug policy, Miller had 11 points and 10 rebounds for Sacramento (2-4) in a 121-109 win over Minnesota on Friday night.

With Miller back, Sacramento was able to win its second straight after losing its first four. Now, the Kings will be facing a banged-up Golden State team that has lost two of three.

Already without injured starting point guard Monta Ellis (ankle), the Warriors (2-4) were missing forwards Corey Maggette (hamstring) and Harrington (back) in a 109-104 loss to Memphis on Friday night.

Maggette's status is uncertain, and Harrington is seeking a second opinion. But Harrington, who has asked to be traded due to his ongoing feud with coach Don Nelson, probably wouldn't have started even if he was healthy.

              Pick: Sacramento

                  Atlanta vs. Carolina (-190, 5.5)

Carolina has fallen into scoring ruts on occasion. Finding the back of the net wasn't much of a problem for the Hurricanes in matchups with the Atlanta Thrashers last season.

The Hurricanes, coming off a victory despite another subpar effort on offense, look to win their sixth straight game against the Thrashers when the Southeast Division rivals meet Sunday.

Carolina ranks around the middle of the pack in the NHL with 2.93 goals per game. The Hurricanes, though, were outstanding on offense against the Thrashers (5-7-2) last season. They won the last five games to take the season series 6-1-1, outscoring Atlanta 27-13 during the winning streak.

In the teams' last matchup, the Hurricanes beat the Thrashers 7-1 on March 28.

Atlanta has won three straight under first-year coach John Anderson, beating Buffalo 5-4 in overtime Friday night for its first road win of the season. The Thrashers haven't won four in a row since last December.

                  Pick: over
