    Trends and Indexes
    Saturday, November 8

Good Luck on day #313 of 2008!

For College Football, and the NFL, look for separate threads:

    • “NCAAF Week 11 Trends and Indexes 11/4 and 11/8”
    • “NFL Week 10 Trends and Indexes 11/6 through 11/10”

For now, the balance of the sports menu in this thread will consist of the NBA, NHL, and Canadian Football League until their seasons are played out. Also, general sports news and notes will still be posted here.

    NOTE:
As information becomes available, we will attempt to post the trends and indexes as soon as possible.
Information is posted from what we believe are reliable sources.

    Daily Sports Roundup

    Saturday, November 8

The top teams in college football will be in action on Saturday and looking to help themselves out in the BCS rankings. Here's an overview in your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

The Alabama Crimson Tide sit atop the polls and the BCS rankings this week, but who'll be in that spot next week? Well, it'll still be the Crimson Tide if they can knock off No. 15 LSU on the road on Saturday. The Tide, who are 9-0 straight-up and 6-3 against-the-spread this year, are 3.5-point favorites to win. LSU is 6-2 SU and 3-4 ATS this season.

If the Tide stumble it'll leave an opening for No. 2 Texas Tech to leap into the top spot. The Red Raiders will be looking to follow up their upset versus Texas with another big win over No. 8 Oklahoma State on Saturday. Texas Tech is favored by 3.5 points at home, and they're 9-0 (4-2-1 ATS) on the season. Oklahoma State is 8-1 and 8-0 ATS.

No. 3 Penn State is listed as a 7.5-point road favorite against Iowa on Saturday, but the rest of the Top 10 teams in action are all expected to deliver blowouts. No. 4 Florida is favored by 24 points at Vanderbilt, while it's Baylor at No. 5 Texas (-28), No. 6 Oklahoma (-25) at Texas A&M, and No. 21 California at No. 7 USC (-22.5). 8-0 (5-2 ATS) Boise State, No. 9 in the polls, is listed as a 35-point home favorite vs. Utah State.

    Other Notable Events

The Canadian Football League begins its playoffs on Saturday afternoon, with both of the divisional semi-finals. Kicking things off at 12:00pm ET is Edmonton at Winnipeg, with the Blue Bombers pegged as 2.5-point home favorites (and the total at 53.5). British Columbia and Saskatchewan then take the field at 4:00pm ET, with the Roughriders sitting as 4-point home favorites. The total for that contest is also at 53.5.

    The Rest of the Schedule

There are just six games on the NBA's schedule for Saturday, after the league turned in a busy Friday night. Highlighting the slate is Cleveland at Chicago, with New Jersey at Indiana, Washington at Orlando, Miami at New Orleans, Phoenix at Milwaukee, and Minnesota at Portland rounding out the day. The Blazers are coming off an impressive 101-99 win over the Rockets on Thursday, with LaMarcus Aldridge pouring in 27 points.

Several division rivals meet in NHL action on Saturday, with Buffalo at Boston, Montreal at Toronto, Pittsburgh at the Islanders, Minnesota at Vancouver, and Dallas at San Jose. Rounding out the league's Saturday lineup: the Rangers at Washington, Calgary at Columbus, Tampa Bay at Philadelphia, Nashville at Colorado, Florida at Phoenix, and St. Louis at Los Angeles. Also, the Devils will be in Detroit to battle the Red Wings.

    A Peek at the Future

Notable NFL matchups for Sunday include Tennessee (-3) at Chicago, Buffalo at New England (-3.5), Green Bay at Minnesota (-2.5), and the Giants at Philadelphia (-3) . . . the Sprint Cup Series will be in Phoenix on Sunday for the Checker O'Reilly Auto Parts 500; standings leader Jimmie Johnson is at 6/1 odds to win, while challenger Carl Edwards is at 5/1 . . . the Celtics will meet the Pistons in Detroit in Sunday NBA action.

          First Round Previews and Picks
          --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Edmonton Eskimos (10-8) at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (8-10) (Winnipeg -3)

It will be cold, windy and it may even snow Saturday afternoon in Winnipeg, all of which should favor the Blue Bombers and their more balanced pass-rush attack.

It could go as low as minus-6 (Celsius) according to weather forecasts with a 20 percent chance of snow. But let's not forget that when the Eskimos stop relying solely on QB Ricky Ray and give the ball to running back Calvin McCarty, they are very successful.

Weather could become a big equalizer in that matchup but cold weather may convince Edmonton coach Danny Maciocia to have his team run the ball more often and that is not good news for Winnipeg.

When the Eskimos dominated the running game this season, they won five regular season contests. Last time these teams met, McCarty rushed for 89 yards and a touchdown. He also caught eight passes for another 80 yards. Edmonton won that game 36-22.

A week earlier, although they lost 30-23 to the Bombers, Ricky Ray still found a way to rip Winnipeg's secondary with 434 yards in aerial gains, with only two touchdowns. In those two games, Ray won a total of 750 yards off the Bombers defense with four touchdowns and only one interception.

There is also a concern about the inconsistency of Winnipeg's rookie kicker Alexis Serna, who enters this game with the worst field goal percentage in the league at 66.7. (By comparison, Eskimos kicker Noel Prefontaine is 76,1 percent accurate on field-goal attempts).

It will be the fifth time a team from the West crosses over to play the East Division semifinals and so far they have been winless in four games. Also to consider, Winnipeg is 8-2 in its last 10 games at home in the playoffs. The Bombers lost in 2003 to Saskatchewan and in 1994 to Baltimore.

Finally, Milt Stegall did guarantee a Bombers victory if they play in front of a full house.

Nice marketing move, but that won't happen and the Eskimos should be in Montreal the following week to try to earn a place in the Grey Cup Classic in the East Division final.

          Pick: Edmonton (+3)

          B.C. Lions (11-7) vs Saskatchewan Roughriders (12-6) (Saskatchewan -3)

A sloppy Lions defense allowed Calgary to score 41 points last week while the Stampeders used three different quarterbacks in a B.C. 41-30 season-ending loss that cost the Lions a chance at hosting this Western Division semifinal.

Instead, they will face the hostility of the Regina fans at Mosaic Stadium at Taylor Field. Home-field advantage in Saskatchewan is always huge and it is even more so when the weather forecast calls for snow, winds blowing on the Prairies and temperatures that could go as low as minus-7.

The Lions also have to be concerned with QB Buck Pierce who, although he should be the starter, is nursing an ankle injury. Pierce completed 26 of 42 pass attempts last week for 346 yards and three touchdowns.

The Roughriders also have their worries at QB with Michael Bishop having struggled often this season and coming off a victory against Toronto in the season's last game where he was picked four times. He also completed 18 passes for 292 yards and ran for three touchdowns in that contest.

This is a resilient Saskatchewan team, who had four starting quarterbacks this season and various players alternating, due to injuries, to catch their passes.

Michael Bishop will start this game but don't be surprised to see either Darian Durant or Steven Jyles send in for relief at some point during the game. Against a Lions team that led the league in sacks (with 68, 23 of which belongs to DE Cam Wake) this season, depth at QB is a good thing.

The Roughriders won only one of the three games they played against B.C in the regular season and it was a 26-16 victory in Week 2. They lost 28-23 to the Lions in Week 12 and again the following week, 27-21.

It’s a tough call here because the game is played at Taylor Field, but since defence wins games, we have to go with the Lions.

          Pick: B.C. (+3)

Pittsburgh Penguins at New York Islanders

The Pens won their seventh game of the season on Thursday, but it wasn't something you'd call impressive. The Oilers nearly came all the way back from a 5-0 deficit.

“I don’t know what’s going on,” Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette after the game. “The guys work so hard to get the lead, and the other guys just catch up [with] us.”

Pittsburgh has a nasty habit of jumping out to early leads and then coasting. Sidney Crosby and his teammates are the most talent-heavy team in the league but they can’t assume their opponents are going to concede defeat.

“I think we just got too comfortable,” forward Miroslav Satan said. “You can’t do that.”

Thursday’s lesson will keep the Pens focused for Saturday’s trip to New York against the lowly Islanders.

              Pick: Penguins

              Vancouver Canucks at Minnesota Wild

The Wild are off to a great start, but the concern with this club – as it is every year – is goal scoring. Sniper Marian Gaborik is on the shelf with a lower body injury - putting the added pressure on secondary scorers like Pierre-Marc Bouchard.

Bouchard has been an effective second-line center (he registered a franchise record 50 assists last season) but he’s struggled this year without Brian Rolston – now with the Devils – skating on his wing. It was hoped Owen Nolan would fill Rolston’s spot but the veteran hasn’t been healthy.

“You can’t live in the past,” Bouchard told the Minneapolis-St. Paul Star Tribune. “You can’t live in the past. You’ve got to move on. There are new guys on the team and new linemates, and that’s just the way it goes.”

Bouchard and the Wild won’t turn around their offensive woes against the Canucks. Vancouver goalie Roberto Luongo hasn’t given up a goal in his last seven periods of play.

              Pick: Under

Pick 'n' Roll: Saturday's best NBA bets
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miami Heat at New Orleans Hornets (-9.5, 193)

After picking up their first road win of 2008-09, the Heat on Saturday travel to New Orleans to face a Hornets squad that's looking to avoid their first three-game skid of the season.

Miami's 99-83 win over the Spurs on Friday was its first in San Antonio since 1996, but the accomplishment was somewhat overshadowed by the Spurs losing Tony Parker to a sprained left ankle in the first quarter.

In the Heat's first two road games, New York and Charlotte shot a combined 50.6 percent from the floor and averaged 110.0 points. Miami held the Spurs to 37.6 percent from the field after they came in ranked second in the NBA at 49.8 percent.

After opening the season 3-0, New Orleans fell again on Friday as it lost 92-89 to Charlotte. In the second quarter, the Hornets (3-2) missed 14 of 17 shots - including all five 3-point attempts - and were outscored 21-7.

North Carolina native Chris Paul, who was averaging 21.8 points and a league-high 11.8 assists coming in, was scoreless with one assist in the first half.

"They did a good job of closing off the lane," said Paul, who is averaging 16.3 points and 10.5 assists in six career games against Miami. "I wasn't able to get in there as easy and create shots for our shooters."

New Orleans swept the two-game season series against Miami in 2007-08, winning by an average of 27.5 points. Paul had 16 points and 16 assists on Jan. 11, as the Hornets defeated the Heat 114-88 in New Orleans.

This isn't the 2007-08 season, though. Dwyane Wade is playing at a superhuman level and appears primed for his first regular season MVP award.

                        Pick: Heat

Minnesota Timberwolves at Portland Trail Blazers (-8.5, 191.5)

Coming off a dramatic victory, the Trail Blazers look for a fifth consecutive victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday night at the Rose Garden.

Brandon Roy made a 30-foot jumper as time expired in overtime to give Portland (2-3) a 101-99 win over Houston on Thursday. It was the Blazers' second home win in as many games this season after beating San Antonio 100-99 on Oct. 31.

Portland looks to further add to its momentum heading into that trip as it tries for a sixth consecutive home victory over Minnesota (1-4), which has lost four in a row overall.

Roy, who is averaging 19.0 points on the season and 21.5 points with 6.0 rebounds and 6.0 assists per game at home, hit the improbable game-winner Thursday moments after fouling Houston's Yao Ming on a shot that resulted in a three-point play that put Portland down by a point with 0.8 seconds left.

Minnesota, which went 7-34 away from home last season, opened a three-game road stretch with a 121-109 loss at Sacramento on Friday. Minnesota lost 129-125 in overtime to San Antonio on Wednesday after allowing an average of 93.0 points in its first three games.

"We are not committed individually and we are not committed as a team," Minnesota coach Randy Wittman said. "That's the way we played."

                        Pick: Blazers
