    Trends and Indexes
    Friday, November 7

Good Luck on day #312 of 2008!

For College Football, and the NFL, look for separate threads:

    • “NCAAF Week 11 Trends and Indexes 11/4 and 11/8”
    • “NFL Week 10 Trends and Indexes 11/6 through 11/10”

For now, the balance of the sports menu in this thread will consist of the NBA, NHL, and Canadian Football League until their seasons are played out. Also, general sports news and notes will still be posted here.

    NOTE:
As information becomes available, we will attempt to post the trends and indexes as soon as possible.
Information is posted from what we believe are reliable sources.

    Daily Sports Roundup

    Friday, November 7

The weekend begins on Friday night with plenty of action around the NBA and a single college football matchup. Here's a look at all the games in your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

The only college football game on the Friday schedule sees Nevada taking on Fresno State. Nevada was bounced 38-31 by Hawaii last time out to fall to 4-4 (and 3-4 against-the-spread) on the season. Fresno State fell 38-35 to Louisiana State in their last outing, and they're now 5-3 (but way back at 1-7 ATS) through eight games this season.

The oddsmakers have Fresno State pegged as a slim 1-point home favorite at Bulldog Stadium, with the total listed at 71 points. Nevada is 4-3 on the OVER/UNDER so far this year, while Fresno State takes a 5-2-1 OVER/UNDER record into Friday's matchup.

    Other Notable Events

The Pistons had to play without newly-acquired Allen Iverson on Wednesday night, but the guard should be on the floor on Friday night when they play on the road against New Jersey. Detroit got past Toronto 100-93 on the road on Wednesday, with Tayshaun Prince picking up 27 points and nine boards. That improved the Pistons' record to 4-0.

Iverson's old team, the Nuggets, get a visit from Dallas on Friday night, with Chauncey Billups expected to make his Denver debut in that game. The Nuggets fell 111-101 to Golden State on Wednesday, with Carmelo Anthony pouring in 28 points in the defeat.
The rest of the games on a busy Friday around the NBA: New Orleans at Charlotte, New York at Washington, Toronto at Atlanta, Indiana at Cleveland, Milwaukee at Boston, Miami at San Antonio, Phoenix at Chicago, Oklahoma City at Utah, Minnesota at Sacramento, Memphis at Golden State, and Houston at the 0-5 Los Angeles Clippers.

    The Rest of the Schedule

The National Hockey League hits the ice with four games on Friday night, with three of the league's hottest teams in action: Montreal, Buffalo, and Anaheim. The Canadiens will play on the road in Columbus, while Buffalo hosts Atlanta, and Anaheim gets a visit from Dallas. The other contest sees Ottawa travel down to Carolina to battle the Canes.

    News from the Wire

Trail Blazers center Greg Oden won't be able to return from his foot injury on Saturday, and he might not be back on the floor until the middle of the month . . . Saints running back Reggie Bush hopes to return from his knee injury in Week 11 . . . Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck should return from leg and back injuries in Week 11 . . . Canucks forward Pavol Demitra is still two weeks away from returning from a rib injury.

    A Peek at the Future

Saturday's gridiron slate sees Alabama listed as a 3.5-point favorite against LSU, while Texas Tech is also a 3.5-point favorite versus Oklahoma State. As well, it's Florida (-24) at Vanderbilt, Penn State (-7.5) at Idaho, and Baylor at Texas (-28) . . . the NBA has six games on Saturday: New Jersey at Indiana, Washington at Orlando, Miami at New Orleans, Cleveland at Chicago, Phoenix at Milwaukee, and also Minnesota at Portland.

Friday's List of 13: Our college football List of 13..........

        13) Miami, FL-- Closed Orange Bowl with 48-0 loss to Virginia LY, avenged that loss with OT win vs Cavaliers Saturday. They're not back to where they were, but they are back in a bowl.

        12) Iowa-- Lost tough game at Illinois, their fourth loss by five points or less, now they're the biggest stumbling block between Penn State and a perfect season. Lions lost 6-4 last time they visited Iowa City.

        11) San Diego State-- How bad are the Aztecs? They lost 35-10 at an awful Wyoming team, allowing 378 rushing yards, 544 overall. Will be a new head man in San Diego next season (and Wyoming too).

        10) Auburn-- Lost 17-7 at Ole Miss, their fourth loss in a row, they threw 43 passes, ran it 25 times- thats not Auburn football. Would be surprising if Tigers didn't have a new coach next season.

        9) Tulsa-- Undefeated season went down tubes when Arkansas ran a kickoff back for TD after Hurricanes had rallied from 17-0 deficit to tie game 23-23. Should still win their conference title, though.

        8) Kansas State-- Who do they think they are, firing Ron Prince after he was 16-18 in less than three seasons? Before Bill Snyder got to the Little Apple, 16-18 would have gotten a coach a freakin' parade......

        7) Michigan-- At 2-7, won't be in bowl this season; they somehow scored 42 points at Purdue and still lost- they got outgained 522-300 gave up 256 rushing yards, but did run punt back for a TD. Bad year

        6) Clemson-- Won 27-21 at BC, racing out to 17-0 halftime lead, and surviving four turnovers. Now they go up against Papa Bowden this week, a month after they fired his son. Could be interesting.

        5) South Carolina-- They're 6-3, an average SEC team, but they put 81,000 fans into Williams-Brice Stadium last week, and I was one of them. What nice people there are in the Palmetto State, but they're not really sure what they have in the Gamecocks right now.

        4) Georgia Tech-- Beat Florida State for first time in last 13 tries as Seminole RB fumbled on 2-yard line in last minute, as FSU drove in for winning score. Paul Johnson is terrific coach, and Tech is really lucky to have him.

        3) California-- Turned ball over five times vs Oregon, allowed Ducks 206 rushing yards, but still won by 10 points. We don't see Bears on TV a lot, but they're quietly one of best programs west of Rockies.

        2) Penn State-- For sake of argument, lets say Lions run table, but so does Alabama and Texas Tech-- Penn State will be 12-0 and a dog in the Rose Bowl. Real bitterness for JoePa fans will be if Florida beats Bama and passes Penn State into BCS title game.

        1) Texas Tech-- Doubtful Mike Leach stays in Lubbock, so they're going to have to enjoy this run as much as possible. What fun Tech is to watch, the way they spread the field and isolate defenders. This is a really fun style of football to watch (and handicap).

Miami Heat at San Antonio Spurs [ESPN | 8 PM ET]

Heat: It has been night and day for Miami as far as the team's play at home and on the road is concerned through the first four games. The Heat have won their two home games by an average of nearly 25 points but have dropped their two road games by a combined 18 points. That first road loss at New York could have been a lot worse too if it wasn't for a 40-29 surge in the fourth quarter. This will also be the first of back-to-back games for Miami with a visit to New Orleans on deck for Saturday.

Heat are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games overall.
The UNDER is 6-2 in Miami's last 8 road games.

Key Injuries - F Dorell Wright (Achilles') is questionable.
G Marcus Banks (groin) is questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 94 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

Spurs (-6, O/U 189): San Antonio point guard Tony Parker turned in a monster performance to help get his team a 129-125 victory at Minnesota in double overtime on Wednesday. Parker scored a career-high 55 points and also had 10 assists and seven rebounds to help the Spurs avoid an 0-4 start. “I just wanted to win so bad,” Parker said. “I was going to try to do everything I can. It’s just one of those games. Everything you do, it works.” Parker will face a unique challenge defensively in Miami rookie Mario Chalmers, who totaled nine steals in a 106-83 rout of Philadelphia on Wednesday. “I’m not going to be scared of anybody,” Chalmers said. “I’ve just got to compete with them.”

Dallas Mavericks at Denver Nuggets [ESPN | 10:30 PM ET]

Mavs: Dallas head coach Rick Carlisle tinkered with his lineup yet again on Tuesday, giving Jason Terry his first start of the season. That move resulted in Terry scoring a season-high 29 points in a 98-81 victory at San Antonio. “Jet (Terry) really came out,” Mavs forward Dirk Nowitzki said. “We definitely need his offense in our group. Whether he starts or is off the bench, we need his shooting and we need his scoring.” Carlisle has started Antoine Wright and Jerry Stackhouse previously in the shooting guard spot alongside Jason Kidd. Dallas has won its first two road games by an average of 13.5 points.

Road team is 3-7 ATS in the last 10 meetings.

Nuggets (-1, O/U 202): Denver expects to have newly-acquired point guard Chauncey Billups in the lineup after he was traded for Allen Iverson on Monday. “Chauncey will be a big part of our team,” Nuggets guard Dahntay Jones said. “The dynamic of this team will change with him.” Carmelo Anthony got back on track offensively in Wednesday's 111-101 loss at Golden State, as he totaled 28 points and eight rebounds after scoring 13 on 5-of-15 shooting in Saturday's loss to the Lakers. Anthony sat out the team's first two games due to a suspension.

Nuggets are 3-6 ATS in their last 9 games overall.

                          --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                          Atlanta vs. Buffalo (-250, 5.5)

Winning hockey games seems a lot easier when you have the hottest goalie in the league on your side. The Sabres are learning that the fun way following two straight shut out wins and a pair of great performances between the pipes from Ryan Miller.

Miller’s hot play helped Buffalo snap a three-game losing skid (with one shootout loss) and the club is now back looking like the hot team that started the season. The American puck stopper leads the league with a 1.62 goals against average and he has the No. 2 save percentage at .942.

Atlanta just broke a six-game losing slide in its most recent game, but that win came against lowly Florida.

                          Pick: Buffalo -1.5

                          Montreal vs. Columbus (+145, 5.5)

If Buffalo has the best goaltending situation right now, Columbus might have the worst. The Jackets are missing their No. 1 goalie, Pascal LeClair, due to an ankle injury and keeping the puck out of the net hasn’t been easy.

Columbus has allowed 11 goals in its past three games and over bettors have cashed in the club’s last four games. Helping over players is the fact that the Blue Jackets have realized they’re going to need to score some goals if they’re going to win games.

The CBJs have blasted 123 shots on goal over their past three games and they’ve racked up 11 goals in the process, which has led to a 1-2 record with one OT loss.

In an effort to try and reduce the goals against, Columbus has called up Steve Mason from Syracuse, who was named the top goaltending prospect by The Hockey News. Mason will make his first NHL regular season start either Friday night against Montreal or Saturday against Calgary.

                          Pick: over

New York Knicks at Washington Wizards (-5.5, 209)

When you’ve got a matchup of two teams like these, the question you have to ask yourself isn’t which side is going to win but rather who’s going to lose.

The Knicks are bloody awful regardless of who’s coaching them. The only thing worth watching at New York home games are the dancers.

Washington is still winless despite leading the Milwaukee Bucks by 14 in the fourth quarter. Twenty Wizard turnovers allowed the Bucks to win in overtime 112-104.

For the Wizards to notch their first win this season they’ll need more production from starters Deshawn Stevenson, Antonio Daniels and Nick Young. The trio combined for only 14 points in the loss to the Bucks. Although they lost their first home opener to the Nets, the Wiz have been a pretty tough team at home with wins in 13 of their last 16 games at the Verizon Center.

                              Pick: Wizards

Toronto Raptors at Atlanta Hawks (-3, 182.5)

This should be a hard fought encounter between two teams chalked full of talent and on the rise.

The Hawks have been oozing with confidence ever since they took the Celtics to seven games in the last year’s playoffs. They made a statement to the rest of the league with Wednesday’s win at New Orleans as 8.5-point dogs.

The most impressive thing about Atlanta has been their transformation at the defensive end. Last season the Hawks were 15th in the league in points allowed (100.0 points per game) and 21st in opponent field goal percentage (46.3). This year Atlanta is first in points allowed (84 ppg) and third in opponent field goal percentage (39.9).

The newfound attention to defense should keep the Raptors at bay. Toronto has struggled with its offense away from the Air Canada Center in recent years. The Raps have played under the total in six of their last eight road games and this should make it seven out of nine.

                              Pick: Under
