    Trends and Indexes
    Thursday, November 6

Good Luck on day #311 of 2008!

For College Football, and the NFL, look for separate threads:

    • “NCAAF Week 11 Trends and Indexes 11/4 and 11/8”
    • “NFL Week 10 Trends and Indexes 11/6 through 11/10”

For now, the balance of the sports menu in this thread will consist of the NBA, NHL, and Canadian Football League until their seasons are played out. Also, general sports news and notes will still be posted here.

    NOTE:
As information becomes available, we will attempt to post the trends and indexes as soon as possible.
Information is posted from what we believe are reliable sources.

    Daily Sports Roundup

    Thursday, November 6

The National Football League returns to Thursday night this week with the Broncos paying a visit to Cleveland. Here's a look at the matchup in your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

The Browns didn't like what they saw from Derek Anderson in their 37-27 loss to the Ravens last week, so they're giving the starting QB job to Brady Quinn against the Broncos on Thursday night. Quinn has yet to throw a pass in a game this season. Cleveland's loss to Baltimore dropped them to 3-5 on the season, but they're 5-3 ATS.

The Broncos don't have a quarterback controversy, but they have lost three games in a row. Jay Cutler struggled in Denver's 26-17 loss to the Dolphins last time out, throwing for 307 yards and two TDs but getting picked off three times and posting a QB rating of just 60.7. The Broncos are now 4-4 on the season, but they're way down at 1-6-1 ATS.

The oddsmakers have the Browns listed as 3-point home favorites in this contest, with the total at 46 points. Cleveland is 3-5 on the OU so far this year, with Denver at 4-3-1.

    Other Notable Events

There are three ranked teams in action in college football on Thursday, with No. 23 Maryland at Virginia Tech, and No. 11 TCU at No. 10 Utah. Maryland (6-2, 4-3 ATS) is a 3-point road dog against Virginia Tech (5-3, 2-5 ATS), with that total at 42.5. Meanwhile, TCU (9-1, 7-2 ATS) is pegged as a 2-point road favorite against Utah (9-0, 4-3-1 ATS), with the total at 43.5. The Frogs and Utes are fighting for top spot in the Mountain West.

    The Rest of the Schedule

The NHL has 11 games on its slate for Thursday, including the Oilers playing on the road against Sidney Crosby and the Penguins. Pittsburgh got past St. Louis 6-3 last time out to improve to 6-4-2 on the season. Rounding out the NHL schedule: Toronto at Boston, Carolina at Washington, Tampa Bay at the Rangers, the Islanders at Atlanta, Philadelphia at Ottawa, Minnesota at Colorado, Nashville at Calgary, Phoenix at Vancouver, and Florida at Los Angeles. As well, the Blues will be playing in San Jose.

Finally, there are just two NBA games on Thursday to round out the day's schedule: Philadelphia at Orlando, and Houston at Portland. The Magic dropped their first two games of the season, but they've since bounced back with two straight victories to sit at 2-2 (just 1-3 ATS). Orlando slipped past Chicago by a score of 96-93 in their last outing.

    News from the Wire

Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin returned from a personal leave of absence against the Senators on Tuesday night, but was held pointless in a 2-1 Washington loss . . . unrestricted NHL free agents Mats Sundin and Brendan Shanahan still haven't settled on teams for this season . . . Knicks guard Stephon Marbury still finds himself on the team's inactive list . . . Rockets forward Shane Battier is still rehabbing his sore foot.

    A Peek at the Future

The lone college football game on Friday sees Nevada at Fresno State (-1.5) . . . the NFL Sunday nighter has the Giants playing the rival Eagles in Philadelphia; the Eagles are 3-point favorites . . . Carl Edwards is pegged as the 5/1 Vegas favorite to win the Checker O'Reilly Auto Parts 500 at Phoenix this weekend, with Jimmie Johnson at 6/1, Greg Biffle at 8/1, and each of Jeff Gordon, Kyle Busch, and Matt Kenseth at 10/1 odds.

Thursday's List of 13: Random thoughts on a November night

        13) NBA put its best feet forward Wednesday; Spurs-T'Wolves was one of best pro hoop games I've seen in long time. Tremendous game and Nuggets-Warriors game was fun to watch, too. Good stuff.

        12) Former Phoenix Suns guard Kevin Johnson was elected mayor of Sacramento Tuesday night. Hopefully he'll get a stadium built for the A's there-- that would be excellent.

        11) Gas prices are down 16 cents a gallon here in Albany since last Wednesday, which is good, but gas is still roughly 50 cents a gallon more expensive here than in Hilton Head, and thats not good.

        10) Broncos at Browns on NFL Network tonight, which means I'll have to go out, since the money gurus haven't figured out a way for me to pay to get this channel even though I have like three channels for soccer, five for home shopping and two C-Spans. Terrific.

        9) More on the power of TV-- Miami, Ohio's football team doesn't play a Saturday game in November. And they're not even any good.

        8) Looks like Jason Giambi might be returning to the A's, after he had bolted Oakland for the riches of the Bronx seven years ago, which is a lot like having a really hot girlfriend dump you, move in with a really rich guy, then have her come knocking on your door, begging for your forgiveness seven years after she's become a heroin-addicted hooker.

Lets just say I'm not real excited about Giambi's return to Oakland.

        7) On a lighter note, road teams were 11-3 against spread last week in the NFL. For the season, visitors are 67-59 against the spread.

        6) First college hoop game of the season is Sunday, when Houston plays Georgia Southern; first full slate of games is week from Friday.

        5) Stephon Marbury is the first person is the history of organized labor to complain to his labor union because he isn't allowed to do anything to earn his $21M a year salary. Life just sucks sometimes.

        4) Las Vegas oddsmakers do have a sense of humor; they've listed the Bronx Bombers as 6-1 favorites to win the 2009 World Series, while the world champ Phillies and AL champ Rays are both 15-1. Boston is 7-1, the Angels are 8-1. Only 102 days until pitchers and catchers.

        3) 23 of the Bobcats' last 80 games will be against teams that used to be coached by Larry Brown. Will be interested to see if he lasts the whole season coaching that sorry team.

Allen Iverson wasn't allowed to play for Detroit Wednesday, since Chauncey Billups hasn't taken his Nuggets physical yet, but Pistons won at Toronto anyway. Denver lost its game at Golden State.

        2) For the first time, I'm going to be older than the President of the United States, which is at least a little unsettling.

        1) 118,928,868 people cast a vote for the two main candidates in the Presidential election; you can make the argument that no matter who won the election, the real winners were the American people, as they got interested in what was going on, which is a really good thing.

                Tips and Trends
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Philadelphia 76ers at Orlando Magic [TNT | 8 PM ET]

76ers: Philly is coming off a terrible performance in a 106-93 loss at Miami on Wednesday. The 76ers shot just 38 percent from the field and allowed the Heat to score 35 points in the second quarter en route to a 59-38 halftime lead. “We kind of ran out of gas,” said Philadelphia F Elton Brand. Thaddeus Young led the team with 19 points, but the Sixers were -23 with him on the floor. They have now dropped four straight games both SU & ATS on the road dating back to the playoffs last year.

76ers are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 Thursday games.
The OVER is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings.

Key Injuries - F/C Jason Smith (knee) is OUT.

                PROJECTED SCORE: 94

Magic (-4.5, O/U 191.5): Orlando is still waiting for offseason acquisition Mickael Pietrus to make an impact defensively, which is the main reason the team signed him. Pietrus has totaled 20 points twice already, but head coach Stan Van Gundy has not hesitated to replace him with Keith Bogans when needed. “Yes, it’s been a problem,” Van Gundy said. “I don’t think he (Bogans) is a better defender, but for what we’re doing right now, he has a better knowledge of how we want to play.” That duo will be responsible for slowing down Philly's Andre Iguodala, who scored just two points on 1-of-7 shooting in Wednesday's loss at Miami.

Magic are 3-6 SU & ATS in their last 9 games overall.
The UNDER is 20-8 in Orlando's last 28 games overall.

                Key Injuries - NONE

                PROJECTED SCORE: 98

Houston Rockets at Portland Trail Blazers [TNT | 10:30 PM ET]

Rockets (-5, O/U 184): Houston begins a tough five-game road trip in Portland, where the team has won three straight times. In fact, the Rockets have won the last four meetings with the Blazers - each by at least nine points, including twice on the road. "It’s a brutal schedule, but this is what sometimes what can make a team," Houston head coach Rick Adelman said. "A five-game trip is a five-game trip. I’m not sure about having to come back to play New Orleans the day after the five-game trip. I don’t know who scheduled that, but they don’t travel much."

Rockets are 19-9 ATS in their last 28 road games.
The UNDER is 14-4 in Houston's last 18 games vs. Northwest Division.

Key Injuries - F Shane Battier (foot) is questionable.

                PROJECTED SCORE: 95

Blazers: Portland will be happy to be back at home, where the team earned its only victory of the season to date. The Blazers edged the Spurs 100-99 there last Friday, but they have followed that up with a pair of road losses at Phoenix and Utah. They won't get to play a non-playoff team from last year until hosting Minnesota on Saturday before departing on a four-game road trip. Brandon Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge each scored 18 points in Portland's 103-96 loss at Utah on Wednesday. The Blazers fell to 0-3 ATS on the road, but they beat San Antonio as a home underdog.

The UNDER is 13-4 in Portland's last 17 games vs. Southwest Division.
The UNDER is 7-2 in the last 9 meetings.

Key Injuries - C Greg Oden (foot) is OUT.
G Martell Webster (foot) is OUT.

                PROJECTED SCORE: 90

                        Minnesota vs. Colorado

The Avs pulled off a five-game winning streak in the early going and hopes were higher than the Rocky Mountains in Denver. But they’ve come crashing back to Earth following a current four-game losing streak and now Colorado is trying to pull itself out of the slump.

There are two main reasons for the skid: The Avs are having trouble finishing and goalie Peter Budaj is looking average all of a sudden.

Until this point, Budaj had been playing like an All-Star, which was masking some of the Avs’ troubles defensively. But Colorado has allowed 18 goals over its last four games and we likely won’t be seeing the Slovak netminder back in the NHL’s top three weekly stars this week like we saw recently.

Besides that, Colorado has scored just seven goals during the slump. This young team needs to start getting some scoring from different sources if it wants to stop the bleeding.

                        Pick: Minnesota

                        St. Louis vs. San Jose

The Sharks aren’t the team you want to face when you’re hoping to get a three-game West Coast road swing started off on the right foot. The Sharks are 11-2 this season (7-0 at home) and they sit atop the NHL standings.

St. Louis is going the opposite way with four losses in its last five games after a 4-1 start to the season. The Blues are young and still finding their groove and it’s not helping that there are some issues between the pipes.

The club is bringing four goalies on its western trip this week, thanks to some nagging injuries to Manny Legace and Ben Bishop. That means Chris Mason will likely be the starter and so far he’s a dismal 0-3 in a Blues uniform.

                        Pick: Sharks
