    Trends and Indexes
    Wednesday, November 5

Good Luck on day #310 of 2008!

For College Football, and the NFL, look for separate threads:

    • “NCAAF Week 11 Trends and Indexes 11/4 and 11/8”
    • “NFL Week 10 Trends and Indexes 11/9 and 11/10”

For now, the balance of the sports menu in this thread will consist of the NBA, NHL, and Canadian Football League until their seasons are played out. Also, general sports news and notes will still be posted here.

    NOTE:
As information becomes available, we will attempt to post the trends and indexes as soon as possible.
Information is posted from what we believe are reliable sources.

    Daily Sports Roundup

    Wednesday, November 5

Unbeaten Ball State and a pair of NBA teams that just made a big trade are in action on Wednesday night. Here's a look at all of the day's games in your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

There are two college football games on the Wednesday schedule, with Toledo at Akron, and Northern Illinois at No. 16 Ball State. The Rockets/Zips matchup is expected to be the tighter one - Akron is listed as just a 4.5-point favorite. The Zips beat Eastern Michigan 42-35 last time out to improve to 4-4 (5-2-1 ATS). Toledo lost 24-23 to Central Michigan in their last outing; they're now at just 2-6 straight-up and 4-4 ATS on the year.

Meanwhile, ranked Ball State will be looking to keep their perfect season intact when they take on Northern Illinois as a 10-point favorite. The Cardinals beat Eastern Michigan 38-16 last time out, and they're now 8-0 (plus a lucrative 6-1 ATS) on the season. Northern Illinois has won three straight games to sit at 5-3 (5-2 ATS) through eight games. The Huskies edged Bowling Green by a score of 16-13 in their last game.

    Other Notable Events

The Pistons and Nuggets will try out their new-look rosters on Wednesday night, with Detroit at Toronto and Denver at Golden State. The Nuggets swapped guard Allen Iverson for guard Chauncey Billups, forward Antonio McDyess, and center Cheick Samb after starting the season 1-2. The Pistons are unbeaten at 3-0 so far this season.

The rest of the NBA's schedule on a busy Wednesday: Phoenix at Indiana, Charlotte at New York, Philadelphia at Miami, Boston at Oklahoma City, San Antonio at Minnesota, Washington at Milwaukee, Chicago at Cleveland, Atlanta at New Orleans, Portland at Utah, and Memphis at Sacramento. As well, we'll get another Clippers/Lakers matchup.

    The Rest of the Schedule

It's a slow night around the National Hockey League on Wednesday, with just three games on the schedule: Tampa Bay at New Jersey, Edmonton at Columbus, and St. Louis at Anaheim. The Devils are coming off a 2-0 loss to the Sabres, and future Hall of Fame goaltender Martin Brodeur will miss the next three-to-four months with an elbow injury. Veteran backup Kevin Weekes will take over for Brodeur while he is out of action.

    News from the Wire

The Browns have seen enough of quarterback Derek Anderson for now - he'll be benched in favor of Brady Quinn this week . . . Lions quarterback Dan Orlovsky has a sprained thumb, giving newly-signed Daunte Culpepper an even better chance of starting this week . . . Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger left Monday night's game with a shoulder injury, leaving it to backup Byron Leftwich to finish up the victory.

    A Peek at the Future

There are only two games on the NBA's schedule for Thursday night: Philadelphia at Orlando, and Houston at Portland . . . No. 23 Maryland is a 3.5-point road underdog against Virginia Tech in college football action on Thursday, while No. 11 TCU is favored by 2.5 points against No. 10 Utah . . . the first round of the CFL playoffs will take place on Saturday, with Edmonton at Winnipeg, and British Columbia at Saskatchewan.

Wednesday's List of 13: Our NFL List of 13..........

      13) Jets-- Favre has thrown fourth quarter pick-6's in last two games but Gang Green is 5-3 and a playoff contender. We'll see how they handle a game they should win this week, at home against St Louis.

      12) Panthers-- Visiting Oakland squad that had three first downs and 77 total yards last week; must-win for Carolina. Scored 10 points or less in both losses, but those were their last two away games.

      11) Falcons-- Rookie coach, rookie QB, they run ball well; they're 5-0 when they score 20+ points, scored 9-9-14 in losses. Doubt Saints are holding anyone under 20, but this is a huge rivalry game.

      10) Eagles-- WRs are shaky but they used TEs well in easy win last week in Seattle. Scored 31 ppg in winning last three games, have big Sunday night game with Giants this week. Need Westbrook healthy.

      9) Patriots-- Just don't make many mistakes, but they did screw up at end of game at Indy Sunday, using last time out with 11:30 left, leaving themselves without a replay challenge. Then again, seldom do any calls go against them (two penalties in last two games).

      8) Colts-- Not nearly as impressive this year- interesting game this week in Pittsburgh, against banged-up Steelers. Indy ran ball for only 47 yards on 21 carries, a definite red flag.

      7) Redskins-- They're a good team, but for the love of Pete, Coach Zorn has to learn how to manage the end of games when he's losing. Down 23-6, kick a FG, get within two scores, keep the game alive.

      6) Cardinals-- Powerful offense; if you put them in Patriot helmets, they'd be getting a lot more positive press. They need to avoid poor weather in a possible road playoff game. Should Cardinals make it to the Super Bowl, it revives Kurt Warner's shot at the Hall of Fame.

      5) Ravens-- Again with rookie coach, rookie QB- they play defense, they've got two productive runners (McGahee, Rice) and they're a good road team, winning at Miami, Cleveland in last three weeks.

      4) Packers-- Was reading some stuff on Internet, where scout says he was studying Aaron Rodgers om film and he saw lot of similarities in what the Packers do now and what they did when they had Favre. How smart does their GM look now?

      3) Steelers-- Big Ben seems to have multiple injuries; obviously, this ranking is dependent on him being healthy enough to be productive. Despite Leftwich's terrific play Monday, they need Big Ben healthy.

      2) Giants-- Totally dismantled Dallas Sunday, but so did the Rams. Defending champs have tough game at Philly this week- they're darn good team, need to get Burress back involved more in the offense.

      1) Titans-- All they do is win; not sure which network has the Super Bowl this year, but think they'd like to see an Arizona-Tennessee tilt this February? Jeff Fisher has seen #13 in the Super Bowl before.

        Wednesday's six-pack
Random knowledge from Election Night coverage........

-- No Republican since Abe Lincoln has won White House without winning the state of Ohio.

-- I guess Joe the Plumber can go back to pouring Drano down into sinks, or whatever it is that aspiring plumbers do.

-- In the Georgia Senate race, if neither candidate gets 50% of the vote, there has to be a runoff election on December 2.

-- Before Tuesday night, 16 of the 100 US Senators were women.

-- I'm still amazed someone named their kid Wolfgang Blitzer.

-- Why do networks jump the gun to project winners in each state? CNN projected McCain to win South Carolina when they had him behind in actual votes-- couldn't they just wait to see who wins?

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pick 'n' Roll: Wednesday's best NBA bets
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detroit Pistons at Toronto Raptors (NA)

If the Pistons ever had an excuse to pack it in for a night, it would have been Wednesday night after Chauncey Billups, their captain, and Antonio McDyess were shipped to Denver in exchange for Allen Iverson. Instead, they stuck together and put in what is likely their best effort of the season, a 101-83 win at Charlotte.

The reality of the deal will hit home on Wednesday when Iverson is expected to make his first start with Detroit against the Raptors. Iverson will definitely create a different dynamic on the floor than Pistons fans are used to and it will take some time to iron the kinks out. In the meantime, looking above the total may be your best bet.

                Pick: over

Philadelphia 76ers at Miami Heat (NA)

There’s no doubt the Miami Heat are ecstatic to have a healthy Dwyane Wade back on the floor, but right now the 6-foot-4 sharpshooter is having a hard time adjusting to everything that has changed around him.

Rookies Mario Chalmers and Michael Beasley are the future in Miami and both are playing more than 30 minutes a night already. The Heat want to work the two young gunners into the NBA game as quickly as possible, but it’s causing problems early on. Wade says he doesn’t feel comfortable in the offense and Shawn Marion is only averaging a dozen points per game so far.

This new wave may take a while in Miami.

                Pick: Philadelphia

Tampa Bay Lightning at New Jersey Devils (NA)

With Martin Brodeur in net, the New Jersey Devils have been one of the NHL's dominant franchises. Without him, they may be just another team.

After learning Brodeur will be sidelined for three to four months, the Devils try to adjust to life without their goaltender Wednesday night when they host a Tampa Bay Lightning club seeking its fourth straight win.

Since the start of this decade, the Devils have won 323 games with Brodeur in net - nearly double their 165 regulation losses with him. On the rare occasions when Brodeur hasn't played, New Jersey has lost more than it has won, going a pedestrian 26-24-8 with three ties.

The Devils (6-3-2) now must try to thrive without Brodeur, who is scheduled to undergo surgery Thursday to repair the distal bicep muscle in his left elbow - injured during Saturday's 6-1 victory over Atlanta.

Eleven-year veteran Kevin Weekes, who has 98 career wins but started only five games with New Jersey last season, turned in a gallant effort Monday night in Brodeur's absence. He made 28 saves, including 19 in the first period to keep the Devils close, but was outplayed by Buffalo goalie Ryan Miller as the Devils fell 2-0.

The loss to the Sabres was the fourth in five games for the Devils, who now must compete with a Tampa Bay team that has won three straight and four of five since opening the season with five consecutive losses. The Lightning (4-3-3) beat Ottawa 3-2 at home on Saturday night when Evgeny Artyukhin scored in the eighth round of a shootout.

                        Pick: Lightning

Edmonton Oilers at Columbus Blue Jackets (-110, 5.5)

The Oilers seek to win their third straight on their longest road trip of the season and continue their traditional success against the Blue Jackets when the teams face off Wednesday night at Nationwide Arena.

This will be the league-high ninth road game overall and fourth of a seven-game trip for Edmonton (6-4-1), which has played only three times at home. All four of the Oilers' regulation losses have come away from home, the most recent a 3-1 defeat to Nashville on Thursday that opened their trip.

That loss was the fifth straight overall for the Oilers, but they've since rebounded to win two in a row, defeating Philadelphia 5-4 on Sunday. Ales Hemsky scored two goals to snap a personal 18-game drought and added an assist, giving him an assist in five of his last six games.

After Dwayne Roloson made 22 saves to beat the Flyers, Mathieu Garon could be back in net looking to continue his individual success against the Blue Jackets. Garon defeated Columbus twice last season, improving to 6-1-1 with one tie, a 2.31 goals-against average and a .926 save percentage in nine career meetings.

The last-place team in the Central Division, Columbus (4-6-2) suffered its fifth loss in six games Monday night, 4-3 in overtime to the New York Islanders at Nassau Coliseum. It was something of a moral victory for the Blue Jackets, who salvaged a point after rallying from three goals down in the third period.

                        Pick: Oilers
