    Trends and Indexes
    Tuesday, November 4

Good Luck on day #309 of 2008!

For College Football, and the NFL, look for separate threads:

    • “NCAAF Week 11 Trends and Indexes 11/4 and 11/8”
    • “NFL Week 10 Trends and Indexes 11/9 and 11/10”

For now, the balance of the sports menu in this thread will consist of the NBA, NHL, and Canadian Football League until their seasons are played out. Also, general sports news and notes will still be posted here.

    NOTE:
As information becomes available, we will attempt to post the trends and indexes as soon as possible.
Information is posted from what we believe are reliable sources.

    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, November 4

Sports will take a back seat to politics on Tuesday night as election results pour in, but here's a look at the matchups trying to grab your attention in the Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

Buffalo will host Miami-Ohio in Mid-American action in the only football game on tap for Tuesday night. The Bulls have been the superior team so far this season, both on the field and at the betting window. Buffalo is coming off consecutive wins over Army and Ohio which boosted them to 4-4 (5-3 against-the-spread) through eight games this year.

Miami-Ohio, on the other hand, was blasted 54-21 by Kent State last time out, and they're just 2-6 (3-4 ATS) on the season. The RedHawks will be trying to get back into the win column as road underdogs in this contest, as Buffalo was opened by the oddsmakers as 8-point favorites. Miami-Ohio won this meeting 31-28 at home last year, and in fact they've managed to beat Buffalo each of the last nine times that they've met.

    Other Notable Events

There are three games on the NBA schedule for Tuesday night, including the Celtics playing on the road against the Rockets. Boston was bounced 95-79 at home by the Pacers last time out, dropping them to 2-1 on the season. Houston has lived up to the preseason hype this year, starting out with wins over the Grizzlies, Mavs, and Thunder.

Rounding out the NBA's Tuesday slate are Phoenix at New Jersey, and Dallas at San Antonio. The Spurs are still looking to pick up their first win of the season, as they lost 103-98 to the Suns in their opener and then fell 100-99 to the Trail Blazers last time out.

    The Rest of the Schedule

The NHL is the busiest league on Tuesday night, with seven games on the schedule. That slate includes four games taking place in Canada, where the fans don't have to worry about making time to cast ballots. Those four contests: Washington at Ottawa, Carolina at Toronto, Phoenix at Calgary, and also Nashville at Vancouver in late action.

The other three games on the ice on Tuesday are the Islanders at the Rangers, Anaheim at Los Angeles, and Minnesota at San Jose. The Sharks knocked off the Avalanche 5-3 on Sunday night, and they've now won four straight games (and six of their past seven outings) to sit with a stellar 10-2-0 mark. San Jose is also 6-0 at home.

    News from the Wire

Heat forward Shawn Marion broke his nose over the weekend but is expected to play through the injury . . . Texans quarterback Matt Schaub suffered a knee injury on Sunday and had to give way to Sage Rosenfels . . . New Lions quarterback Daunte Culpepper could be in the mix for playing time immediately . . . Bears quarterback Kyle Orton is expected to miss the next month of action because of a badly sprained ankle.

    A Peek at the Future

The NFL has a Thursday game this week, with Denver at Cleveland. The oddsmakers opened the Browns as 3-point home favorites, with the total at 46.5 points . . . the best mid-week college football matchup takes place on Thursday as well, with No. 11 TCU at No. 10 Utah. The Horned Frogs opened as 1-point favorites . . . Jimmie Johnson leads Carl Edwards by 106 points heading into Sunday's Sprint Cup Series event at Phoenix.

      Six-pack for Tuesday

-- As we thought, Brady Quinn gets the nod at QB for Cleveland in their Thursday night game against Denver this week.

-- Detroit Lions are not only 0-8, now they're down to two QBs, as Orlovsky hurt his thumb and is out; Drew Stanton, from Michigan State and newly-signed Daunte Culpepper are who they've got.

-- Interesting to read that season ticket sales are up in the NHL, but down in the NBA, which recently laid off 80 employees.

-- Seems like a ling time ago, but in his first two NBA seasons out of high school, Kobe Bryant started only seven games for Lakers.

-- Odd that only three of the other 11 football coaches in the SEC make less than South Carolina's Steve Spurrier, who isn't exactly in the poor house.

-- US Air needs airplanes with more leg room, simple as that-- I'm 6-3, and I felt like a damn sardine all day Monday.

Tuesday's List of 13: Random thoughts after a great vacation

Some unconnected thoughts, opinions after my vacation down south

        13) There is no loyalty in the business world, and college football is a very big business. Tennessee canned Phil Fulmer Monday, the same guy who is 150-51 in Knoxville and won a national title at the place when he went to college and has worked for the last thirty years.

        12) Four college coaches have now been canned during the season, an unfortunate trend, as college game creeps closer and closer to being a miniature version of the NFL.

        11) I'm thinking Fantasy Football has done more to increase interest in the NFL than gambling has. Lot of people you wouldn't think have an interest in sports have fantasy football teams.

        10) Was surprised to learn that even though Hilton Head is a coastal town, obviously, if you drew a line straight north all way to Canada, the line would go west of Pittsburgh, so its not really that far east.

        9) Tailgaters at the South Carolina games leave their folding chairs out while they go into the stadium for the game; if they did that here in New York, they would need new folding chairs for their next tailgate.

        8) Ran Jaworski said Monday night that London Fletcher is by far the best player in the NFL who hasn't gone to a Pro Bowl-- he does have a Super Bowl ring, won with the '99 Rams-- he played Division III college football at John Carroll, Don Shula's alma mater.

        7) Memo to the Redskins: Lose the burgundy/burgundy look-- its not good. Reminds me of when Boog Powell played for the Indians, and they wore red jerseys with red pants. Not attractive.

        6) Not only has Jason Campbell had seven offensive coordinators in his last eight seasons, but Jim Zorn is the first of the eight who was a quarterback, which is probably making a big difference for him.

        5) The Iverson-to-Detroit trade is fun but odd-- think about this-- if Pistons let Iverson and Rasheed Wallace walk after the season, they'll be $21-22M under the salary cap for next season, and will in terrific shape to go shopping for big-name free agents.

        4) If you like golf, you have to visit Hilton Head, its just that simple.

        3) College footbal is going to have a big problem if Alabama, Texas Tech and Penn State all win out-- you're going to wind up with Joe Paterno, the 82-year old legend at Penn State, getting nosed out of a last shot at a national title because of this stupid system. It isn't fair.

        2) You know Nick Saban's return to Baton Rouge this week is huge when ESPN Gameday broadcasts from the site of the CBS telecast.

        1) This time next year, Michael Vick will be a Raider, and wouldn't be weird if they had a Monday night game in Cleveland's Dawg Pound?

              Tips and Trends
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Celtics at Houston Rockets [8:30 PM ET]

Celtics: Not that they're making excuses, but the defending NBA champs suffered their first loss of the season on Saturday night after playing back-to-back nights at home and on the road. They definitely looked out of sync in getting crushed 95-79 by the Pacers, shooting 35 percent from the field and committing 24 turnovers. It also didn't help that Paul Pierce missed 12-of-15 shots for Boston. This will be the first meeting since the Celtics ended Houston's 22-game winning streak with a 94-74 rout at the Toyota Center back on March 18th.

Celtics are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 games vs. Southwest Division.
The UNDER is 8-1 in Boston's last 9 road games.

              Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 86 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

Rockets (-2, O/U 178): Houston has been able to overcome a slow start offensively by Tracy McGrady thanks to the addition of Ron Artest and more contributions from reserves. McGrady is shooting just 37 percent from the field through three games, but it hasn't mattered too much because others have picked up the slack. For example, Carl Landry totaled 14 points off the bench on 6-of-11 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds in an 89-77 rout of Oklahoma City on Saturday. Landry was the only Rocket who shot better than 50 percent against the Thunder.

Rockets are 10-4 ATS in their last 14 games cs. Atlantic Division.
The UNDER is 10-1 in Houston's last 11 home games.

Key Injuries - F Shane Battier (foot) is questionable.

              PROJECTED SCORE: 88

Dallas Mavericks at San Antonio Spurs [8:30 PM ET]

Mavs: Dallas clearly is not the same team that went to the NBA Finals three years ago, as the players are still searching for an identity with new head coach Rick Carlisle. Insiders expected a more exciting offensive system under Carlisle, but the Mavs are averaging less than 93 points through three games. That includes two losses at home after losing 100-81 to the Cavs there on Monday. The lone win for Dallas this season came at Minnesota on Saturday.

Road team is 12-4 ATS in the last 16 meetings.
The UNDER is 10-4-1 in Dallas' last 16 Tuesday games.

Key Injuries - F Devean George (hand) is day-to-day.

              PROJECTED SCORE: 92

Spurs (-3.5, O/U 190): San Antonio should have C Fabricio Oberto back for this game after he sat out the first two with an irregular heartbeat. That would allow Matt Bonner to go back to the bench and take some pressure off Tim Duncan inside. Bonner got the nod at Portland on Friday and totaled just five points and two rebounds in 12 minutes. More good news is that the Spurs did not lose consecutive games at the AT&T Center last season, and they are traditionally one of the best home teams in the NBA.

Spurs are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games overall.
The UNDER is 8-2 in San Antonio's last 10 games overall.

Key Injuries - C Fabricio Oberto (irregular heartbeat) is expected to return.
G Manu Ginobili (ankle) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 98 (Side Play of the Day)

Phoenix at New Jersey (+5, 203)

So much for the idea that a new coach would slow the Suns down a bit to start this season. Phoenix has won two out of three with Terry Porter at the helm, beating the Spurs at San Antonio to open the year, losing a tough one at New Orleans, and then pounding an upstart Trail Blazers team at home.

The supposed commitment to defense under Porter hasn’t kept total numbers down either, with all three of the Suns’ games checking in above the posted total.

So far, Phoenix is getting it done with depth. The Suns have six players averaging at least 10 points, with Amare Stoudemire leading the way at 23.2, while five guys are grabbing at least five rebounds a game so far.

                Pick: over

Dallas at San Antonio (-3.5, 190)

The Spurs don’t lose three straight very often, but they’re staring an 0-3 start in the face with the Mavericks coming to town on Tuesday. And after losing their first two by a combined total of six points against Portland and Phoenix, the Spurs will be fired up coming back home.

The problem hasn’t been with San Antonio’s big guns. Tim Duncan dropped 32 points in the opener and added 27 points and 10 boards against Portland, while Tony Parker is averaging 28 points and chipped in with 11 assists his last time out.

San Antonio heads into this one having beaten the Mavericks in each of their last three meetings.

                Pick: San Antonio

Detroit Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock called the Sharks the best team in the West before they proved his point and beat his club 4-2 Thursday night. That win was part of a current four-game winning streak for San Jose, which the Sharks have used to vault to the top of the Western standings with 20 points, two ahead of Detroit.

Babcock says the Sharks almost always outshoot the other team and the additions of Rob Blake and Dan Boyle have shored up San Jose’s defense in a major way, which was always the team’s Achilles’ heel.

Now San Jose takes on a Wild squad that’s tied for the lead in the Northwest. The Sharks have won the last seven meetings with Minnesota and they’re 6-0 at home this season.

                      Pick: San Jose

                      Anaheim vs. Los Angeles

The Kings do not need to see a team like the Ducks right now. L.A. is entrenched in a four-game losing streak, while Anaheim is the hottest team in the league with six wins and a shootout loss in its last seven games.

The key to winning for Anaheim has been simple – production. The Ducks have scored 28 goals in their last seven games and they are watching their playmakers come alive. Ryan Getzlaf enters Tuesday’s game on a six-game point streak and 38-year-old Teemu Selanne has seven goals in his last five games.

L.A., meanwhile, can’t keep the puck out of the net. The Kings have allowed 16 goals in their last four contests.

                      Pick: over

                      Washington vs. Ottawa

Alex Ovechkin is back for the Caps after returning home to Russia to visit his sick grandfather and should be in the lineup to face Ottawa. That’s good news for the Caps, but you might not see any smiles on their faces.

Head coach Bruce Boudreau put Washington through what he says is the toughest practice he’s ever done since coming to Washington on Sunday, a day the Caps were originally supposed to have off. The grueling practice came the night after Washington lost 5-0 to Buffalo and Boudreau had no problem calling out specific players for their shoddy performances.

The Sens are just 1-4-1 on home ice this year so Caps bettors are hoping Ottawa will be the place to get things rolling again in a battle between the two national capitals on American election night.

                      Pick: Washington
