NFL Preview - Pittsburgh (5-2) at Washington (6-2)

              By Tony Moss, NFL Editor

(Sports Network) - Roughly 250 miles separate Pittsburgh and Washington, DC on the map, but just a half-game separates the Pittsburgh Steelers and Washington Redskins on the NFL's won-loss ledger.

The two long-established northeast franchises will try to improve that standing on Monday night, when they square of at FedEx Field to cap off the Week 9 schedule.

The visiting Steelers (5-2) will be looking to avoid falling to 0-3 against opponents from the NFC East, as Mike Tomlin's squad has already been handled by both the Eagles (15-6) and Giants (21-14) this season. The loss to New York came last week, when a deflating fourth quarter saw Pittsburgh surrender a 14-9 lead to the defending champs

The major blow for the Steelers came when emergency long-snapper James Harrison, in the game because regular long-snapper Greg Warren had suffered a season-ending torn ACL earlier in the second half, snapped the ball clear over the head of hobbled punter Mitch Berger and through the back of the end zone for a game-tying safety. After receiving the ensuing free kick, the Giants subsequently sealed a 21-14 win on a seven-play, 53-yard drive resulting in an Eli Manning touchdown pass to Kevin Boss.

The Steelers also struggled to finish off drives throughout the day, and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger threw four interceptions and suffered five sacks on the afternoon.

Big Ben and company will be looking for greater consistency on Monday night, but will be battling a Redskins club that has been among the NFL's most pleasant surprises of the season's first half.

Washington (6-2) held its ground in the crowded NFC East race last week, when it went to Detroit and outlasted the desperate Lions, 25-17.

Quarterback Jason Campbell continued his encouraging first half with a 23- of-28, 328-yard passing performance, while early MVP candidate Clinton Portis moved the chains to the tune of 126 yards on 24 carries.

Portis, who led the NFL in rushing as Week 9 began, has topped 100 yards in each of his last five outings and needs just 56 yards on Monday to go over 1,000 yards for the sixth time in his seven years as a pro.

The Redskins' 6-2 record through eight games is the organization's best since starting with the same mark in 2000, when they finished a disappointing 8-8 and missed the playoffs in head coach Norv Turner's final year.

Washington hasn't opened a campaign at 7-2 since 1996, another year when the team struggled down the stretch, finishing 9-7 and missing the postseason under Turner.

              SERIES HISTORY

Washington holds a 42-30-3 lead in the all-time series with Pittsburgh, which dates back to the 1933 season. Pittsburgh has won the last three installments of the series, all at home, including a 16-7 triumph when the teams last met, in 2004. The Redskins' most recent win over the Steelers came at Three Rivers Stadium during the 1991 campaign, and Washington was a 30-29 winner when Pittsburgh last visited D.C. for a meaningful game, in 1988. The Steelers are 0-4 at Washington since last winning there in 1964.

The Redskins' Jim Zorn and Steelers' Mike Tomlin will be meeting each other, as well as their counterpart's respective team, for the first time as head coaches.

WHEN THE STEELERS HAVE THE BALL

A Steelers offense that could generally be counted on for efficiency in the past has taken something of a beating this year. The struggles of the offensive line have been primarily to blame for a team that ranks just 25th in NFL total offense (291.7 yards per game), and the 24 sacks the team has allowed are tied for the fifth-most in the NFL. That said, Pittsburgh could receive a shot in the arm on Monday night, with running back Willie Parker (knee) and wide receiver Santonio Holmes (one-game team suspension) both slated to return to the lineup. Parker (263 rushing yards, 3 TD) has missed four games with a sprained knee suffered against the Eagles in Week 3, while Holmes (22 receptions, 1 TD) was out last week following a recent citation for marijuana possession. The return of those offensive pieces should take some of the pressure off of both Roethlisberger (1352 passing yards, 10 TD, 7 INT) and trusty No. 1 receiver Hines Ward (31 receptions, 5 TD). Tight end Heath Miller (21 receptions, 1 TD) posted three catches for 52 yards in last week's loss to the Giants.

The struggling Steeler offense could catch a break on Monday night, as the Redskins defense is beginning to show some wear and tear on the injury front. Defensive end Jason Taylor (calf) and cornerback Shawn Springs (calf) will both miss Monday's contest, and cornerback Carlos Rogers (calf), safety LaRon Landry (hamstring), and defensive tackle Cornelius Griffin (shoulder) are all regarded as questionable for the contest. The absence of Taylor should be reassuring to Roethlisberger, and will hamper a Washington "D" that ranks near the bottom of the league with just 10 sacks on the year. With Taylor out, Andre Carter (21 tackles, 2 sacks) will have primary responsibility in getting to the quarterback, and cornerback Fred Smoot (32 tackles, 1 INT) and safety Chris Horton (37 tackles, 3 INT) will have to be at their best on the back end. The Redskins rank 11th in the NFL against the pass (195.4 yards per game) as Week 9 begins. Washington is a sturdier fifth against the run (82.8 yards per game), with linebackers London Fletcher (67 tackles) and Rocky McIntosh (48 tackles) along with tackle Kedric Golston (20 tackles, 1 sack) among those who have been active in rush defense this year.

WHEN THE REDSKINS HAVE THE BALL

Zorn's balanced offensive attack has quickly taken hold in Washington, with the Redskins ranking seventh in the league in total offense (364.2 yards per game) as Week 9 commences. Portis (944 rushing yards, 7 TD, 11 receptions) has received a lion's share of the credit for the team's offensive proficiency, but not to be underestimated is the work of Campbell (1754 passing yards, 8 TD), who has guided the only passing attack in the NFL that has yet to throw an interception. Santana Moss (42 receptions, 5 TD) has been Campbell's top target, but Moss is considered questionable for Monday with a hamstring problem. If he can't go, tight end Chris Cooley (40 receptions, 1 TD) and ex- Steeler Antwaan Randle El (33 receptions, 1 TD) figure to play a greater role in the attack. Up front, Washington is slated to have left tackle Chris Samuels back in the fold after a one-game absence, but well-regarded veteran guard Pete Kendall is questionable with a knee injury.

The Steelers have largely managed to mitigate the struggles of their offense by playing terrific defense through the season's first seven weeks. Pittsburgh leads the NFL in total defense (236 yards per game), passing defense (164.4 yards per game), is second in sacks recorded (25), third in rushing defense (71.6 yards per game), and has surrendered a league-low-tying 10 touchdowns on the year. That said, injuries are beginning to take their toll on the unit. Linebacker LaMarr Woodley (32 tackles, 7.5 sacks, 1 INT), who is tied for the league lead in defensive fumble recoveries (3), is questionable with a calf problem, while run-stuffing nose tackle Casey Hampton (9 tackles) could be sidelined by a toe injury. In the secondary, the Steelers are likely to be without two starters, as cornerback Bryant McFadden will miss another game with a broken forearm and ex-Redskins safety Ryan Clark is doubtful with a shoulder ailment. Chris Hoke (7 tackles) will fill in if Hampton can't go, and Tyrone Carter (7 tackles) and Anthony Madison (10 tackles) should see some reps at safety in Clark's absence. Harrison (40 tackles, 8.5 sacks) will fuel the pass rush, and safety Troy Polamalu (33 tackles, 3 INT) continues to lead the secondary.

              FANTASY FOCUS

Parker was a must-start fantasy player prior to his injury, but at this stage, you might want to wait and see if he can return to his past productivity level. It might be worth the risk on Parker, but you'll definitely want to sit Mewelde Moore, who will see his carries take a major hit due to Parker's presence. In the passing game, Roethlisberger has been under too much heat to be deemed reliable, though wideouts Ward and Holmes and tight end Miller remain decent plays. The Pittsburgh defense is among the best in the business, and remains a must-start, and kicker Jeff Reed generally contributes some points as well.

The strength of the Pittsburgh defense might make you think twice about using Redskins in this contest, though you shouldn't expect Portis, Campbell, Moss (if he plays) or Cooley to be completely shut down. The Steelers' defensive injuries could loosen things up just a tad in that regard. The Redskins defense, on the other hand, is a credible group but doesn't make a ton of big plays and isn't a great fantasy option. The injuries to Taylor, Springs, and company won't help, either. Kicker Shaun Suisham is averaging two field goals per game, and is worth putting in the lineup.

              OVERALL ANALYSIS

The Redskins are a nice story, and look like a legitimate contender in the NFC East, but Washington could receive a bit of a shock to the system on Monday night. The Skins' last three games have come against the Rams, Browns, and Lions, three teams that aren't particularly physical and don't scare anyone on either side of the ball. The Steelers, with their power running attack and aggressive defense, are a different sort of challenge, and one that doesn't figure to bring out the best in Zorn's squad. Look for Pittsburgh to bounce back from last week's tough loss to the Giants, and to move to 6-2 at the season's midway point.
