    Monday, November 3

Good Luck on day #308 of 2008!

For the NFL, look for separate thread:

    • “NFL Week 9 Trends and Indexes 11/2 and 11/3”

Later this week, watch for College football and NFL threads:
    • “NCAAF Week 11 Trends and Indexes 11/4 through 11/8”
    • “NFL Week 10 Trends and Indexes 11/9 and 11/10”

For now, the balance of the sports menu in this thread will consist of the NBA, NHL, and Canadian Football League until their seasons are played out. Also, general sports news and notes will still be posted here.

    NOTE:
As information becomes available, we will attempt to post the trends and indexes as soon as possible.

    Daily Sports Roundup

    Monday, November 3

The Redskins will be looking to pick up their third straight victory when they take the field on Monday night against the Steelers. Here's a look in your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

The Redskins seemed like the fourth banana in the competitive NFC East division before the season began, but with just two losses over eight contests they're right there in the race for first place. Washington is coming off a 25-7 road win over the Lions in which they covered the 7-point spread; that moved them to 6-2 (5-3 ATS) on the season.

Pittsburgh lost some ground in the AFC North race last week when they fell 21-14 to the Giants as 3-point home favorites. That defeat put an end to the Steelers' three-game winning streak, which saw them knock off the Ravens, Jaguars, and Bengals. The Steelers head into the Monday nighter at 5-2; they're at 3-4 ATS through seven games.

The oddsmakers are siding with the Redskins at home in this one, as they're listed as 2-point favorites. The total for the contest is sitting at 36.5 points; the Steelers are 4-3 on the OVER/UNDER so far this season, while the Redskins are at 2-5-1 against the totals.

    Other Notable Events

A pair of NBA teams in search of their first victories will take to the court on Monday night, but unfortunately for them they won't be playing each other. The 0-3 Kings will be trying to get a road victory in Philadelphia; Sacramento lost 121-103 to Orlando last time out. Meanwhile, the 0-3 Clippers will be at home on Monday night to take on the Jazz; Los Angeles was pounded 101-79 by Utah in the first game of the home-and-home set.

Four other matchups round out the NBA's schedule for the night: Chicago at Orlando, Detroit at Charlotte, Golden State at Memphis, and Cleveland at Dallas. LeBron James and his Cavaliers have stumbled out of the gate; they've beaten the lowly Bobcats, but they dropped games to both the Celtics and Hornets to sit with a 1-2 mark on the year.

    The Rest of the Schedule

There are three games in the National Hockey League on Monday night, including Buffalo at New Jersey. Both of those teams rolled to wins on Saturday; the Sabres blanked the Capitals 5-0, and the Devils pounded the Thrashers 6-1 (despite star netminder Martin Brodeur leaving the contest early with a reported bruised elbow). The other two games on the slate are Columbus at the Islanders, and Colorado at Chicago.

    News from the Wire

S Ryan Clark, LB Keyaron Fox, CB Bryant McFadden, and T Marvel Smith are all OUT for the Steelers on Monday night, while RB Willie Parker and QB Ben Roethlisberger are both listed in the PROBABLE section of the team's injury report . . . the Redskins have RB Ladell Betts, WR Malcolm Kelly, CB Shawn Springs, and DE Jason Taylor listed as OUT for Monday night. RB Clinton Portis is PROBABLE to play in the contest.

    A Peek at the Future

Notable college football matchups during the week include Northern Illinois at Ball State on Wednesday night, and both Maryland at Virginia Tech and TCU at Utah on Thursday night . . . the drivers of the Sprint Cup Series will hit Phoenix International Raceway for the Checker O'Reilly Auto Parts 500 on Sunday afternoon, and they'll then close out their 2008 season with the Ford 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway on November 16.

      Six-pack for Monday

-- It doesn't really matter yet, since there is ton of football left to be played, but very surprised Texas Tech jumped to #2 in the BCS.

-- Penn State fans need Oregon State to keep winning; Florida fans need Ole Miss to keep winning. Weird thing about this system is that once you play a team, you want them to start winning games, to bolster your strength of schedule.

-- Most people where I live, in upstate New York, have very little idea how seriously college football is taken here in the south.

-- The NBA All-Star Game is in the Dallas Cowboys' new domed stadium next winter (Feb of 2010).

-- Matt Schaub, Kyle Orton were QBs lost to injury Sunday; their replacements are Sage Rosenfels, Rex Grossman.

-- Never thought I'd see the day when the Raiders were the worst franchise in the NFL, an absolute laughingstock.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up another NFL Sunday........

        13) If you want to spend a fun Sunday in Hilton Head watching pro football, then the Wild Wings Cafe is the place to be. All the games are on, the food is good, and the help is friendly. Good place. That said, it'll be good to get back home to Graney's (37 TVs, smokin' hot bartenders, terrific food) this week.

        12) Atlanta 24, Raiders 0-- Score is misleading; Falcons had 30 first downs, an awful lot, Oakland had three, in about as bad a pummeling as I've seen in an NFL game since the Rams held Seattle to -8 yards in a 1979 24-0 win in the Kingdome. Michael Vick will be a Raider next season, , in my opinion, and to be honest, they could use him.

        11) Buccaneers trailed 24-3 at Arrowhead, rallied to win in OT, as Herm Edwards found another way to screw up a close game. Trick play the Chiefs scored on was cool though, long pass from Clayton to QB-turned-WR Tyler Thigpen, who shows some potential at QB.

        10) My Rams had a truly dismal day Sunday, as Marc Bulger was just awful, on a day where Kurt Warner passed for 252 yards in the first half and Dick Vermeil was installed in the Ring of Honor. Time for the Male Sheep to draft a QB, and I mean April of 2009. 2008 is over for the Rams, and so better be Bulger's tenure with the Rams.

        9) Minnesota had good balance, with 177 passing yards, 168 on the ground, in a 28-21 win over Houston (0-4 on the road).

        8) Bengals drove 80+ yards for TDs on their first two drives, as they built a 21-3 lead and hung on, stopping a two-point play with 1:22 to go, getting their first win of '08 by upsetting Jacksonville, 21-19.

        7) Browns led Baltimore 27-13 with 6:07 left in third quarter, then got outscored 24-0 the rest of the way, as Baltimore won 37-27 in a game that most likely will get Brady Quinn off the bench and into some games. Browns have short week this week, but then they have ten days before the next game-- I'm thinking Quinn starts then.

On their last six drives, Browns ran 21 plays for a hideous 40 yards.

        6) Lions led 23-13 at the half in Chicago, but didn't score in second half and are now 0-8, halfway to a perfect season. Detroit ran ball 28 times for 47 yards, and that just ain't good enough.

        5) Tennessee is 8-0 and no one talks about them!!!!

        4) Adam Viniatieri hadn't make a 50+-yard FG in his last 91 games until he connected on one Sunday in Colts' 18-15 win over Patriots.

        3) Denver Broncos ran ball 12 times for 14 yards vs Miami, in 26-17 loss; Cutler also threw INT for a TD. Hard to win that way.

        2) Seattle threw a 90-yard TD pass in its first series; but was 12-28 for 57 passing yards the rest of the game. You need quality backups to be a good NFL team, and Seneca Wallace doesn't fit that bill.

        1) Hard to describe how lifeless and disinterested the Cowboys look they are so lucky they have a bye this week. Will be interesting to see if Romo's return puts some bounce back into their step.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Bulls at Orlando Magic [7 PM ET]

Bulls: Chicago rookie point guard Derrick Rose is coming off the best performance of his young career, scoring 26 points in a 96-86 win over Memphis on Saturday. "All I’m trying to do is win the game," Rose said. "If that takes me to score 20 some points or five points it doesn’t matter as long as we win." The Bulls are hoping Rose can help them avoid a fifth straight loss to the Magic, who won all four meetings last season by an average of 17 points.

Bulls are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
The UNDER is 8-2 in Chicago's last 10 games overall.
Key Injuries - G Larry Hughes (shoulder ) is OUT.

                PROJECTED SCORE: 92

Magic (-7, O/U 196): Orlando finally turned in a good offensive performance after averaging 84.5 points in losing its first two games. The Magic exploded in a 121-103 win over Sacramento on Saturday, shooting 55 percent from the field with all five starters scoring in double figures. "This was good for our confidence," Orlando head coach Stan Van Gundy said. "People don’t realize how fragile confidence can be. They think when you hit the major league level, confidence is a given because you have so much success, but a couple of bad nights and all the sudden you’re pressing."

Magic are 2-6 SU in their last 8 games overall.
The UNDER is 8-2 in Orlando's last 10 games vs. Central Division.

                Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 103 (Side Play of the Day)

Cleveland Cavaliers at Dallas Mavericks [8:30 PM ET]

Cavs: Cleveland star LeBron James is coming off his worst shooting performance of the season and only made it to the free-throw line four times in a 104-92 loss at New Orleans on Saturday. James did dish out a season-high 13 assists, but he still has not made a 3-pointer this year, going 0-for-9 from long range. Another problem offensively for the Cavs is that new point guard Mo Williams continues to struggle with his shot as well. Williams was 5-for-15 against the Hornets and finished with 11 points.

Cavs are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 games overall.
The UNDER is 15-7 in Cleveland's last 22 games overall.

Key Injuries - F Darnell Jackson (wrist) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 93 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

Mavs (-2.5, O/U 192): Dallas earned its first victory of the season on Saturday at Minnesota, 95-85. The Mavs got outstanding support from their reserves, who totaled 42 points. Jason Terry led the Dallas bench with 19 while Gerald Green added nine, seven of which came during a three-minute stretch in the fourth quarter. Green did not even play in the season opener, and new head coach Rick Carlisle is still working on his regular rotation.

Mavs are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 home games.
The UNDER is 8-3 in Dallas' last 11 home games.

Key Injuries - F Devean George (hand) is day-to-day.

                PROJECTED SCORE: 95
