    Trends and Indexes
    Sunday, November 2

Good Luck on day #307 of 2008!

For College Football and the NFL, look for separate threads:

    • “NCAAF Week 10 Trends and Indexes 10/28 through 11/3”
    • “NFL Week 9 Trends and Indexes 11/2 and 11/3”

For now, the balance of the sports menu in this thread will consist of the NBA, NHL, and Canadian Football League until their seasons are played out. Also, general sports news and notes will still be posted here.

    NOTE:
As information becomes available, we will attempt to post the trends and indexes as soon as possible.
Information is posted from what we believe are reliable sources.
Any opinions expressed are not necessarily those of the posting member or BettorsChat.

    Daily Sports Roundup

    Sunday, November 2

It'll be Cowboys/Giants and Patriots/Colts on Sunday as the NFL headlines a sports schedule that also includes auto racing and the NBA. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

The Cowboys have been in turmoil over the past month, but they can still tie the rival Giants in the win column by beating them on the road on Sunday afternoon. The 5-3 (3-5 ATS) Cowboys, however, have been listed as big 9-point underdogs for this contest, with the total at 41 points. The 6-1 (5-2 ATS) Giants are on a two-game winning streak.

It's been doom-and-gloom in New England and Indianapolis this season, but both of those teams will be looking to come up big on Sunday night and give their campaign a jolt of energy. The 3-4 (2-5 ATS) Colts have been listed by the oddsmakers as 6-point home favorites (with the total at 44). The Pats are 5-2 SU and 3-4 ATS so far this year.

Rounding out the NFL's slate for Sunday: the Jets at Buffalo (-5.5), Detroit at Chicago (-12.5), Jacksonville (-7.5) at Cincinnati, Baltimore at Cleveland (-1.5), Green Bay at Tennessee (-4.5), Arizona (-3) at St. Louis, Houston at Minnesota (-4.5), Tampa Bay (-9) at Kansas City, Miami at Denver (-3), and Atlanta (-3) at Oakland. As well, the Eagles will head to the west coast to take on the struggling Seahawks as 7-point road favorites.

    Other Notable Events

The Sprint Cup Series is at Texas Motor Speedway this weekend for Sunday's Dickies 500. Standings leader Jimmie Johnson will be looking to take a stranglehold on the series title in this race; he has a 183-point lead on Carl Edwards with just three races to go in the season. Edwards won the Samsung 500 on the Texas track earlier in the year.

As well, Lewis Hamilton will be trying to clinch the Formula One title on Sunday when he takes to the track in South America for the season-ending Brazilian Grand Prix. Hamilton leads Felipe Massa 94-87 in the drivers championship, and he just has to finish in the Top 5 to win the title. Kimi Raikkonen is the defending champ at this event.

    The Rest of the Schedule

A single college football game is on the schedule for Sunday, with East Carolina playing at Central Florida. The Pirates are coming off a 30-10 win over Memphis, and they're listed as 3.5-point road favorites in this contest (with the total at 51 points). Central Florida fell 49-19 to Tulsa last time out, and they've been beaten in five of their past six.

There are just two NBA games on the Sunday schedule after a busy Saturday around the league. The Bucks and Knicks start things off at 6:00pm ET with a game in New York, while Oklahoma City will play host to the Timberwolves in a 7:00pm ET matchup.

Finally, there are six games on the NHL's schedule for Sunday, including Edmonton at Philadelphia at 1:00pm ET; the Flyers have recovered from a slow start to go 4-0-0 in their last four games. Rounding out the slate: Toronto at Carolina, Florida at Atlanta, San Jose at Colorado, Calgary at Anaheim, and Detroit at Vancouver to close the day.

    A Peek at the Future

It'll be Pittsburgh at Washington on Monday Night Football, with the Redskins pegged as 1.5-point home favorites (and the total at 36.5 points). The NFL also begins their Thursday night games next week, with Denver at Cleveland . . . the top game on the NBA's schedule for Monday is Cleveland at Dallas, while the Celtics get back on the court in Houston on Tuesday . . . the Sprint Cup Series will race in Phoenix next week.

Pick 'n' Roll: Sunday's best NBA bets
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Milwaukee at New York (-5.5, 214.5)

The story for the New York Knicks through two games under new coach Mike D'Antoni is more about who has yet to take the court, than about who is actually playing.

D'Antoni has shown he is not afraid to bench the Knicks' high-priced players as he gets ready to coach his third game for New York on Sunday against the Milwaukee Bucks.

Hired to turn around a franchise that has suffered through seven straight losing seasons, D'Antoni has yet to give point guard Stephon Marbury and center Eddy Curry any minutes thus far. Marbury, who will earn close to $22 million in the final year of his contract, was placed on the inactive list for Friday's 116-87 loss at Philadelphia.

"This is the direction we're going and there will be some nights like this," D'Antoni said of Marbury. "If I was playing everything for tonight, you'd do things differently. But we're trying to build a base for going forward."

With Marbury and Curry sitting, the Knicks (1-1) have given players such as Wilson Chandler and Mardy Collins extended playing time. Those two combined for 18 points on Friday, but most of that was after the game was decided as New York shot 32.7 percent (32-of-98) from the field.

"I am not happy about any of this and neither are the players, but you have to be realistic and knowing this year is going to be a lot of work and its our goal to play hard every night and learn from it," D'Antoni said. "It's not going to be a Cinderella story, we are going to have to work and there are going to be nights like this, but we will bounce back and Sunday at the Garden we will be ready."

The Knicks won their first game at home, 120-115 over Miami on Wednesday. They placed six players in double figures, including a 17-point effort by Chandler off the bench.

New York has won five of seven meetings against Milwaukee over the last two seasons, including all three at Madison Square Garden.

                        Pick: New York

Minnesota at Oklahoma City (-2, 191.5)

Almost 19 years ago, the Seattle SuperSonics prevented the Minnesota Timberwolves from winning their first NBA game.

Minnesota will try to return the favor on Sunday in Oklahoma City when it faces the Thunder franchise that relocated from Seattle during the offseason.

While their franchise's first regular-season game - a 106-94 loss at Seattle on Nov. 3, 1989 - is just a memory, the Timberwolves' 95-85 loss to Dallas on Saturday is not.

Coming off a 98-96 win against Sacramento on Wednesday where it held off a fourth-quarter rally, Minnesota (1-1) couldn't put together one of their own against the Mavericks.

Rashad McCants, who scored 18 points in 27 minutes off the bench, sank two free throws with 11:41 left to pull the Wolves within 67-65, but Dallas scored 13 of the next 17 points and never relinquished the lead.

"It's just a matter of trusting at both ends of the floor,'' Minnesota coach Randy Wittman said. "And when we do that, we're pretty good. And when we don't, we look really, really bad.''

The Wolves' Al Jefferson posted his second straight double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds, but rookie Kevin Love followed his 12-point, nine-rebound NBA debut with nine points and three rebounds in 23 minutes.

Minnesota outrebounded Dallas 42-38, and for a period beginning in the late-first quarter, scored 36 consecutive points in the lane or at the foul line.

                        Pick: Minnesota

                          Toronto at Carolina(-160, 5.5)

The Toronto Maple Leafs and Carolina Hurricanes are headed in opposite directions offensively going into Sunday's game at the RBC Center, the first of a home-and-home series.

After scoring 11 goals in their first six games, the Maple Leafs (5-3-3) have found the net 20 times in their last five contests to post a 3-1-1 record.

The Hurricanes (5-3-2), meanwhile, remain atop the Southeast Division despite losing three of five following a 3-1-1 start. Carolina has scored only four goals in its past three games and 10 in its last five.

Toronto was blanked for the first two periods on Saturday against the visiting New York Rangers, but tallied five goals in a 5:21 span of the third for a 5-2 victory.

John Mitchell started the outburst at 12:36 with the first of two goals - also the first ones of his NHL career - and added an assist. Former Ranger Dominic Moore had a goal and assist and Jason Blake and Pavel Kubina also scored against backup goaltender Steve Valiquette.

"We completely shuffled our lines in the last 10 minutes, and it was just one of those things that some pucks went in and things worked," Maple Leafs coach Ron Wilson said. "You can't explain it. I can't remember the last time I coached a team where we scored five goals in five minutes to close out a win."

Maple Leafs defenseman Tomas Kaberle has tallied three assists in his last two games. He's also had five goals and 16 assists 31 career games against the Hurricanes.

                          Pick: Leafs

                          Calgary at Anaheim(-160,5.5)

The Calgary Flames put their six-game winning streak on the line Sunday when they try for a rare road win against the Anaheim Ducks.

Calgary hasn't won at Anaheim's Honda Center since the 2006 playoffs and has lost seven straight regular-season games there.

The Flames (7-3-1), though, enter as one of the NHL's hottest teams, although they blew a two-goal lead Saturday against the Los Angeles Kings.

Los Angeles' Oscar Moller scored a tying goal with less than six minutes remaining, but the Flames' Daymond Langkow responded at the 16:23 mark with the game-winner in a 3-2 victory.

Calgary has won six straight for the first time since Nov. 7-17, 2006. It hasn't won seven in a row since a run of eight consecutive victories from Nov. 1-16, 2005.

The Flames have played stingy defense during their win streak, giving up nine goals compared with 22 goals surrendered during their 1-3-1 start.

"We had a great preseason, and then we didn't get off on the right foot," center Wayne Primeau said. "I think the guys are starting to buy into it. And when you've get everybody on the same page. It's a lot easier out there.''

Miikka Kiprusoff has started all 11 games and has improved his goals-against average from 4.37 to 2.81 over his last six starts. On the road versus the Ducks, he has lost seven of nine starts while giving up 24 goals.

Anaheim went 3-1 against Calgary last season, as star winger Jarome Iginla was held without a goal in all three losses for the Flames. Calgary also surrendered seven goals in 18 power-play opportunities in the season series.

                          Pick: under
