    Trends and Indexes
    Saturday, November 1

Good Luck on day #306 of 2008!

For College Football and the NFL, look for separate threads:

    • “NCAAF Week 10 Trends and Indexes 10/28 through 11/3”
    • “NFL Week 9 Trends and Indexes 11/2 and 11/3”

For now, the balance of the sports menu in this thread will consist of the NBA, NHL, and Canadian Football League until their seasons are played out. Also, general sports news and notes will still be posted here.

    NOTE:
As information becomes available, we will attempt to post the trends and indexes as soon as possible.
Information is posted from what we believe are reliable sources.

    Daily Sports Roundup

    Saturday, November 1

The big event on Saturday takes place down in Texas, where the No. 1 Longhorns will try to grab a victory against the No. 6 Red Raiders. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

Texas Tech can get some consideration for the top spot in the college football rankings if they can knock off No. 1 Texas. The Red Raiders are listed as 3.5-point home underdogs in this contest, while the battle of potent offenses has a posted total of 74 points. The Longhorns are 8-0 straight-up and 7-1 against-the-spread on the season, while the Red Raiders are also 8-0 SU but a less lucrative 3-2-1 versus the posted line.

No. 2 Alabama will host Arkansas State on Saturday afternoon as a big 23.5-point favorite, while No. 4 Oklahoma will get a visit from Nebraska and try to cover the 21.5-point spread. No. 5 Florida will be in tough against No. 8 Georgia; the Gators are 6.5-point favorites. Meanwhile, it's Washington at No. 7 USC (-46) and Iowa State at No. 9 Oklahoma State (-30.5) in a pair of mismatches, and No. 10 Utah (-7.5) at New Mexico.

    Other Notable Events

The Los Angeles Lakers are back in action Saturday, as they'll travel to Denver to play the Nuggets. Kobe Bryant and company haven't had any trouble with their opponents so far, beating Portland 96-76 in their opener, and then bouncing the Clippers 117-79. Denver dropped their opener 98-94 to Utah, and played the Clippers late on Friday night.

Other games on the NBA's schedule for Saturday: Philadelphia at Atlanta, Sacramento at Orlando, Miami at Charlotte, Boston at Indiana, Washington at Detroit, Golden State at New Jersey, Dallas at Minnesota, Cleveland at New Orleans, Memphis at Chicago, Oklahoma City at Houston, Toronto at Milwaukee, and the Clippers at Utah. As well, the Blazers will move on without Greg Oden when they play on the road against the Suns.

    The Rest of the Schedule

There'll be 24 teams hitting the ice in NHL action on Saturday, including the league-leading New York Rangers on the road in Toronto. The rest of the schedule: Edmonton at Carolina, Dallas at Boston, Chicago at Columbus, Montreal at the Islanders, Atlanta at New Jersey, Washington at Buffalo, Ottawa at Tampa Bay, Florida at Nashville, Pittsburgh at St. Louis, Calgary at Los Angeles, and then finally Minnesota at Phoenix.

As well, the Canadian Football League ends their regular season with a pair of games on Saturday. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are pegged as 7-point home favorites in the early game against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, with the total at 51.5 points. The Calgary Stampeders will then host the B.C. Lions later in the day, with no line yet at press time.

    A Peek at the Future

Top NFL matchups for Sunday include Baltimore at Cleveland (-1.5), Green Bay at Tennessee (-4.5), and Dallas at the Giants (-9), while it'll be New England at Indianapolis (-6) on Sunday Night Football . . . the only two NBA games on Sunday are Milwaukee at New York (6:00pm ET) and Minnesota at Oklahoma City (7:00pm ET) . . . Saturday, November 1

                Hamilton Tiger-Cats (3-14) vs Winnipeg Blue Bombers (7-10) (-7)

The Blue Bombers have many injured players only a week away from their playoff game against Edmonton. Cornerback Willie Amos aggravated a hamstring injury last week in Montreal, DB Anthony Malbrough is nursing a groin injury and quarterbacks Kevin Glenn (thumb) and Ryan Dinwiddie (ankle) are also hurt. Running backs Joe Smith (knee) and Fred Reid (sore ribs) are also beat up entering the final stretch. Hamilton has only one win to show in eight road games this season, but bettors should keep in mind some Ti-Cat players are still trying to win spots on next year’s roster. Winnipeg wants to finish the regular season on a high note but at what cost? This is another game to handle with caution.

                Pick: Hamilton

B.C. Lions (11-6) at Calgary Stampeders (12-5) (Pick 'em)

Buck Pierce, who left last week's game against Toronto with an ankle injury, is expected to be the starting QB for British Columbia, but the Lions will have to go on without star running back Charles Roberts. His place in the lineup will be taken by Stefan Logan who returns after missing the last two weeks because of sore ribs. This is a meaningful game for the Stamps, who won’t play a significant matchup until the Western final. Go with the Lions, especially if Saskatchewan stumbles in Toronto.

                Pick : B.C.

Cleveland Cavaliers at New Orleans Hornets [8 PM ET]

Cavs: Cleveland star LeBron James led the NBA in scoring last year but was held to 21 points on 40 percent shooting in two losses to New Orleans last season. James had the luxury of only playing 30 minutes in a 96-79 rout of Charlotte on Thursday, totaling 22 points, nine rebounds and nine assists. He was lucky enough to play 30 minutes or less only twice all of last season. "We had a lot of guys contribute and I got a lot of rest,” James said Thursday. “Coach believes in our roster and I believe in our roster. I don’t have to average 42 minutes like I have in the past because of our depth.”

Cavs are 7-0 ATS in their last 7 games overall.
The UNDER is 15-6 in Cleveland's last 21 games overall.

Key Injuries - F Darnell Jackson (wrist) is OUT.

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 92

Hornets (-4.5, O/U 189): The most valuable signing of the offseason may have very well been James Posey, who could end up starting for Peja Stojakovic after winning a championship with the Celtics last year. Posey scored 13 points in Thursday's 108-95 win at Phoenix, and head coach Byron Scott is happy to have him on his side. “He’s like a few players in this league that can affect a game without scoring,” Scott said. “He’s going to take the charge, he’s going to guard the best players, he’s going to communicate at all times." Posey is also expected to play a key role defending Cleveland's James.

Home team is 11-4 ATS in the last 15 meetings.
