Ice picks: Friday's best NHL bets
        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        Dallas at Chicago (-130, 5.5)

Last season the Dallas Stars raised some eyebrows when Mike Smith stole a bunch of starts from veteran netminder Marty Turco before the youngster was shipped to Tampa as a part of the deal that brought Brad Richards and Johan Holmqvist to Dallas. Turco may have to fend off Tobias Stephan for playing time this year if he doesn’t turn his season around in a hurry.

Stephan made 19 saves to earn his first NHL win Wednesday night, while Turco watched from the bench with his 4.26 goals against average and .842 save percentage keeping him company.

Goaltending issues and an offense that’s starting to click means cash for over bettors. Seven of Dallas’ 10 games to date have topped the total.

        Pick: over

        Vancouver at Anaheim (-170, 5.5)

Sometimes an early road trip is just what a team needs to get back on track. The Ducks were 1-4 before they reeled off four straight road wins, then topped the trip off by beating the Red Wings back at home in overtime.

A reenergized offense sparked the streak. Anaheim’s big line of Chris Kunitz, Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf caught fire on the trip and the club’s power play is connecting at a 35 percent clip over the last five games. Not good news for Vancouver.

The Canucks are also playing the second part of a back-to-back, after kicking off their road swing Thursday night against Los Angeles.

        Pick: Anaheim

          Week 19 Previews and Picks
          --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

          Friday, October 31

Montreal Alouettes (11-6) at Edmonton Eskimos (9-8) (-2.5)

The Montreal Alouettes will rest star QB Anthony Calvillo, running back Avon Cobourne, slotback Kerry Watkins, linebacker Reggie Hunt and cornerback Mark Estelle for this contest. Alouettes kicker and punter, Damon Duval, stayed in Montreal because of kidney stones. On the other side, the Eskimos will start Ricky Ray although it’s not known how long coach Danny Maciocia will keep his star QB in the game. Take Edmonton because of the circumstances, but with caution. Neither team has anything to gain in this season finale.

          Pick: Edmonton

          Saturday, November 1

          Hamilton Tiger-Cats (3-14) vs Winnipeg Blue Bombers (7-10) (-7)

The Blue Bombers have many injured players only a week away from their playoff game against Edmonton. Cornerback Willie Amos aggravated a hamstring injury last week in Montreal, DB Anthony Malbrough is nursing a groin injury and quarterbacks Kevin Glenn (thumb) and Ryan Dinwiddie (ankle) are also hurt. Running backs Joe Smith (knee) and Fred Reid (sore ribs) are also beat up entering the final stretch. Hamilton has only one win to show in eight road games this season, but bettors should keep in mind some Ti-Cat players are still trying to win spots on next year’s roster. Winnipeg wants to finish the regular season on a high note but at what cost? This is another game to handle with caution.

          Pick: Hamilton

B.C. Lions (11-6) at Calgary Stampeders (12-5) (Pick 'em)

Buck Pierce, who left last week's game against Toronto with an ankle injury, is expected to be the starting QB for British Columbia, but the Lions will have to go on without star running back Charles Roberts. His place in the lineup will be taken by Stefan Logan who returns after missing the last two weeks because of sore ribs. This is a meaningful game for the Stamps, who won’t play a significant matchup until the Western final. Go with the Lions, especially if Saskatchewan stumbles in Toronto.

          Pick : B.C.
