Good Luck on day #304 of 2008!

For College Football and the NFL, look for separate threads:

    • “NFL Week 10 Trends and Indexes 11/2 and 11/3”

For now, the balance of the sports menu in this thread will consist of the NBA, NHL, and Canadian Football League until their seasons are played out. Also, general sports news and notes will still be posted here.

    Daily Sports Roundup

    Thursday, October 30

With the World Series finally out of the way college football and the NBA will get a bigger share of the sporting spotlight on Thursday. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

Two losses in their last three games has South Florida in danger of falling out of the AP's Top 25 - they're hanging on at No. 24 as they prepare for their road game against Cincinnati on Thursday night. The Bulls fell 24-20 to Louisville last time out, which dropped them to 6-2 (and 2-5 against-the-spread) on the season. The Bearcats were pounded 40-16 by Connecticut in their last game, which put them at 5-2 (and 2-4 ATS).

The oddsmakers like the Bulls in this contest, as they opened as a 2.5-point favorite (the line has since moved to 3 points). The total for the matchup is pegged at 51 points.

    Other Notable Events

After a hectic Wednesday there are only three games on the NBA's schedule for Thursday night: Charlotte at Cleveland, Houston at Dallas, and New Orleans at Phoenix. Both the Bobcats and the Mavericks will be playing their season openers; Charlotte is looking to gain some respectability in the Eastern Conference this season, while Dallas will be trying to prove they're still a contender in the Western Conference.

    The Rest of the Schedule

There are a dozen games on the NHL's schedule for Thursday night, including a big matchup in San Jose with the Red Wings visiting the Sharks. San Jose has started the season 8-2-0, and they've won three of their last four games. The Red Wings will be playing their third west-coast game in four nights; they already visited L.A. and Anaheim.

Rounding out the rest of the Thursday night schedule for the NHL: Tampa Bay at Buffalo, Atlanta at the Rangers, the Islanders at Philadelphia, Ottawa at Florida, Edmonton at Nashville, Montreal at Minnesota, Carolina at St. Louis, Columbus at Colorado, Boston at Calgary, Pittsburgh at Phoenix, and Vancouver at Los Angeles.

Finally, there's a single CFL game on the Thursday schedule, with Saskatchewan at Toronto. The Riders are expected to win easily; they're listed as 9.5-point road favorites.

    News from the Wire

Trail Blazers center Greg Oden left Tuesday night's season opener with a sprained foot and could miss up to six weeks; fellow Blazers rookie Rudy Fernandez began his NBA career with 16 points . . .Patriots running back Sammy Morris (knee) is expected to miss at least this week's game . . . Cowboys quarterback Brad Johnson is still in line to start for the team on Sunday . . . Chiefs running back Larry Johnson won't play this weekend.

    A Peek at the Future

The NBA has seven more games on tap for Friday night, including Chicago at Boston and San Antonio at Portland . . . Texas is pegged as a 3.5-point favorite in their big game against Texas Tech on Saturday night . . . the Colts opened as 6.5-point favorites against the Patriots for their Sunday Night Football meeting, while the Redskins were listed as 2.5-point favorites against the Steelers on the opening line for Monday night.

Thursday's List of 13: Our NFL List of 13........

This isn't a ranking, just teams that made an impression recently; the Giants/Titans, right now, are clearly the two best teams in NFL......

        13) Cowboys-- Two wild card teams make playoffs, so even though the four NFC East teams are among the five best in NFC, most that can make the playoffs is three. If you had to guess right now, aren't the Cowboys the shakiest of the four NFC East teams?

        12) Rams--Biggest game of Marc Bulger's career this week; people in St Louis despise the Cardinals (who bolted St Louis in mid-80's) but adore Kurt Warner (won Super Bowl XXXIV). Rams get back into contention in NFC West by beating Arizona this week.

        11) Jets-- Struggled with Raiders, Chiefs last two weeks, now visit a hostile Orchard Park crowd where first place could be on line (if the Patriots lose at Indy and Jets win, its a three-way tie in AFC East).

        10) Eagles-- Totally different offense when Westbrook plays- their receivers aren't so good. Hard to imagine Seneca Wallace generating a lot of offense against Jim Johnson's defense this week.

        9) Bills-- This is the year for someone other than New England to be AFC East champ.......that said, you don't lose at Miami and win the division. Bad loss for Bills last week, with Jets, Patriots up next.

        8) Redskins-- 6-2 and they have the latest bye week, so they'll be in best shape, rest-wise, coming down stretch, with all three NFC East rivals still having to visit Maryland. Jim Zorn, Coach of the Year???

        7) Patriots-- Getting superior special teams play; they've had edge in average starting field position in six of their seven games. Colts/Bills in next two games, with the Buffalo game the more important one.

        6) Packers-- They're 13-5-1 vs spread in last 19 road games. Rodgers has proved to be a more-than-able replacement for Favre. Think they have decent shot at handing Titans their first loss this weekend.

        5) Bears-- They were leading NFL in scoring before bye; interesting to see if they keep it up. When they beat Vikings 48-41 in Week 7, it was first time EVER they gave up 40+ points and still won game.

        4) Panthers-- They play good defense, I like Delhomme as a leader, but can't get stench of their loss at Tampa out of my mind. First two games after the bye are Raiders/Lions; no excuse not to get two wins.

        3) Steelers-- Led Giants 14-12 when their long snapper got hurt, and sub threw one thru the end zone for tying safety. Think Big Ben is super, but not convinced Tomlin is a championship-level head coach.

        2) Giants-- At some point, this Burress thing will boil over and they will have to win big games without him. Offensive line is underrated; Eli almost never gets roughed up like Roethlisberger is this season.

        1) Titans-- Being small-market team helps them, keeps them out of the limelight, where heads swell all too quickly. Not surprisingly, this is another team with a terrific offensive line. Is there a better coach in NFL than Jeff Fisher?

Worth The Wait: Phillies World Champs For 2nd Time Ever

Phillies Knock Off Rays, 4-3; Win Series In 5 Games

In a bizarre, back-and-forth finale, the Phillies fought off a 46-hour rain delay, lingering cold and an upstart Tampa Bay Rays squad to take the World Series in five games.

After squandering away a one-run lead they took shortly after Game 5 resumed Wednesday night, the Fightin' Phils stormed right back out in front in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Then, closer Brad Lidge kept his lights-out save record for the season going in the ninth.

The 4-3 win prompted a jubilant celebration on the field, in the stands, and shortly thereafter on the streets of Philadelphia.

It's just the second world championship ever for the Phillies, and it came after a 28-year-and-eight-day wait from their last title.

The victory also ends an awful, 25-year drought for the city's professional sports teams. Since the Sixers' 1983 NBA title, the city's major sports teams had been 0-for-7 in championship play.

The Phillies themselves went 13 years without making the playoffs before last season.

But they made sure to take hold of the Commissioners Trophy in front of the hometown fans, on the strength of a 7-0 record at home in the postseason.

          Phils Took Early Lead

The Phillies' 34-year-old outfielder Geoff Jenkins -- who had never made a playoff appearance before this year and didn't have a hit in the series -- led off the bottom of the sixth with a pinch-hit double off the outfield wall in right-center.

After being bunted to third, Jenkins scored when Rays second-baseman Akinori Iawmura dropped a bloop single in shallow centerfield.

Rays manager Joe Maddon made the change from Grant Balfour to lefty J.P. Howell, who recorded a strike out and nearly picked-off Jayson Werth (for the third time in the series) before Ryan Howard popped out.

The early run temporarily kept a win in line for Phillies starter Cole Hamels, who did not return to the mound after going six innings, giving up five hits, walking one and striking out three.

Rays Fought Back To Tie It

Ryan Madson came on to record one out, but the Rays' Rocco Baldelli then took a first-pitch fastball out of the park to leftfield.

After a Jason Bartlett single and a sacrifice bunt, manager Charlie Manuel turned to J.C. Romero, who induced a grounder up the middle.

Utley feigned a throw to first and instead went to home, where catcher Carlos Ruiz tagged Bartlett out to preserve the tie.

Phillies Surge Back Ahead, Hold The Lead

Outfielder Pat Burrell belted a double to the deepest part of centerfield to start the seventh. He was sacrificed over to third by Shane Victorino and driven in on a single by Pedro Feliz.

From there, J.C. Romero recorded four outs and Lidge came on to lock the game down in the ninth.

Romero recorded the win, the loss went to Howell, and the Lidge got his second save of the series.

Game Resumed With Squads In 2-2 Tie

Of course, Game 5 was halted by rain Monday night soon after the Rays pulled back into a 2-2 tie in the game.

The Phillies had jumped out to the early lead in the sixth inning, when Scott Kazmir struggled in the bottom of the first, walking Jayson Werth, beaning Utley and giving a free pass to Pat Burrell. The next batter, Shane Victorino, jumped on a 2-1 fastball and laced it down the line, scoring two runs.

It was the top of the fourth when Rays first-baseman Carlos Pena doubled over the head of Werth in rightfield. The next batter, Evan Longoria, singled back up the middle, scoring Pena to make it 2-1.

Kazmir was in trouble again in the bottom of the fourth inning, but he got out of it by inducing a bases-loaded infield ground out from Utley.

With one out in the top of the sixth, B.J. Upton singled off of Hamels, stole second and Pena drove the ball into right, scoring Upton from second.

Pick ‘n’ Roll: Best NBA bets
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  Hornets vs. Suns

The excitement machine from the desert is back as Phoenix chucks the coach but brings back seven ball handlers from their last season.

Incoming coach Terry Porter will need some luck as he endeavors to bring some sense to the Suns' defense. That team loves to run and keep the scoreboard ablaze - that's what they've always done. But can anyone blame them?

Think of Amare Stoudemire, Steve Nash, Raja Bell, Grant Hill, Leandro Barbosa and the new addition of run ‘n’ gun Matt Barnes and it'll be very hard to not expect triple figures when the Suns are playing.

Add to this equation the visiting snipers, namely CP3 (Chris Paul), David West and Peja Stojakovic and you'd have to be out of your mind not to take the over. During the offseason, the Hornets couldn't miss their 3-pointers, even if they tried.

Both teams are coming off a game Wednesday night and defense might not take on top priority in this back-to-back situation.

                  Pick: over

                  Bobcats vs. Cleveland

That last minute against Boston must have been a killer for Cavs fans Tuesday night. King James couldn't bring it to within a point after Maurice Williams (Mo) hit a 3-pointer to bring the Cavs within three.

But such is the staunch defense of the Green Machine, where even the best of the best struggle to bucket a “simple" lay up.

Cleveland also really struggled with the outside shot, making only three out of 18 3-pointers because of the perimeter pressure that Boston applies.

We doubt if Lebron, Mo, Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Anderson Varejao will face a similar defensive wall from Larry Brown's team. This should be a free flowing game with both teams boasting plenty of scoring options.

Do we even need to mention that Jason Richardson made the most 3-pointers last season? We also believe that Ray Felton and Matt Carroll should improve their offseason shooting percentage.

                  Pick: over
