With how shaky Turco has been this makes little to no difference for me...Tobias is decent enough to get the job done...the Stars should be motivated enough to hand the Wild their first regulation loss at home tonight regardless...still a play...GL!!!

How the hell you get Habs from Canadian?

I think this is like the 4th or 5th time someone has asked me why the Montreal Canadiens nickname is the Habs and I give the same response everytime so will just copy and past it again..

Habs is short for Habitants, but the reason it is used as an alternate nickname for the Canadiens goes back to the days when Montreal had two pro hockey team: The Maroons and Canadiens. Maroons fans were mainly English speaking Montrealers and Canadiens fans were French speaking. "Habitants" were rural French Canadians who's social status was similar to "share croppers", and the term was used as a pejorative by English Montrealers and by middle and upper class French Montrealers when referring to the working class people. The Canadiens had many French Canadian players, and their fans were mostly French speaking, so the team itself became known as "Habitants" or "Habs".

Legend wants it that the "H" on the Canadiens logo stands for "Habs" instead of Club de Hockey Canadien. The fable began in 1924 when US reporter Tex Rickard was falsely informed by someone that the "H" stood for "habitant", a french word that in those days was used to refer the farmers of Quebec.

Rickard was told that the french players on the team came from farms and were therefore, "habitants". At the time, the Canadiens were viewed upon as the french team of Montreal, whereas the Montreal Maroons were the English team.
