    Best games of 2008

    Nov. 1

Georgia vs. Florida (in Jacksonville, Fla.) Urban Meyer orders the entire population of Gainesville onto the field after the Gators first touchdown.

Texas at Texas Tech: The over-under is 78. That's the average number of points scored in this game the past five years. All have been won by Texas.

    Nov. 8

Could this be the final Bowden Bowl?

Clemson at Florida State: Tommy has won the last four out of five over his dad. Will this be the last meeting?

    Nov. 22

BYU at Utah: Hopefully, a BCS bowl is at stake. The last time it was, Utah fans broke out one of the best signs of all time during a rout of the Cougars: Where's Your God Now?

Michigan at Ohio State: Yo, Rich. Big game today. You might have heard about when you came to town.

Cal Poly at Wisconsin: The San Luis Obispo County fair got in the way of a September meeting so they moved this game to late November. Kidding. Just threw this in to remind you that no one is safe. The I-AA Mustangs won at San Diego State in 2006, averaged a school-record 40 points last season and return 10 starters to a confusing option offense.

    Nov. 28

West Virginia at Pittsburgh: Devine vs. McCoy. Stewart vs. Wannstedt. White vs. Pittsburgh's defense. West Virginia's psyche vs. itself. Just think if the Mountaineers need this to go to the BCS title game. Again.

    Nov. 29

Chase Daniel and Mizzou should have a lot riding on the outcome of the Kansas game.

Missouri vs. Kansas (in Kansas City, Mo.): The winner could be playing at Arrowhead two weeks in a row. Kansas City hosts the Big 12 championship game on Dec. 6. Nothing, though, can top last season's epic. The second-largest crowd in Arrowhead history watched Missouri win 36-28.

Auburn at Alabama: Tommy Tuberville is running out of hands to show the cameras how many times in a row he has won.

    Dec. 6

South Florida at West Virginia: Jim Leavitt might -- just might -- admit this is a big game. The South Florida coach fell asleep during Neil Armstrong's walk on the moon. Not much phases him. The winner here should capture the Big East. Two top 10 Mountaineers' teams have played South Florida the past two years. Two top 10 Mountaineers teams have come out losers. The tough Bulls' D has shut down West Virginia's running game.

USC at UCLA: Rick Neuheisel is Tabasco. This rivalry, lately has been rice cakes. In other words, USC-UCLA needs a little Ricky Tabasco.

Buffalo at Ohio [ESPNU | 7 PM ET]

Buffalo: Buffalo’s path to the MAC East Division title begins at Ohio. The Bulls are in a four-way tie for second place with Bowling Green, Miami (Ohio), and Ohio behind first-place Akron (2-2) with a 1-2 record. The Bulls have huge problems stopping the short passing game and have to elect to play more nickel and dime packages. The secondary is solid but the LBs are inexperienced and struggle in short pass coverage. Mario Henry will miss the next 4-6 weeks after suffering a severe medial collateral ligament sprain in his right knee. Henry was injured during the win against Army.

Buffalo is 5-0 ATS in its last 5 road games.
Buffalo is 7-1 ATS in its last 8 games following a SU win.

Key Injuries - RB James Starks (toe) is probable.

            PROJECTED SCORE: 24

Ohio (-1.5, O/U 50.5): This will be the Bobcats' second straight appearance on Tuesday night after losing to Temple last week, 14-10. Defensively the Bobcats could not have done much more for the first three quarters against Temple. Ohio held the Owls to just 60 yards in the first three quarters, including negative yardage in the second and third quarters, as they racked up 13 tackles for loss. Ohio’s rushing game suffered a week after losing top runner Donte Harden for the season. The Bobcats finished with just a net 47 rushing yards on 29 attempts.

Ohio is 7-2 ATS in its last 9 home games.
Ohio is 9-3-1 ATS in its last 13 games in October.

Key Injuries - RB Donta Harden (shoulder) is OUT.

            PROJECTED SCORE: 27

Houston at Marshall [ESPN2 | 8 PM ET]

Houston (-8, O/U 63): Houston ranks second in the nation in passing (403.3), third in total offense (544.3) and 12th in scoring (39.3). The running game does enough to keep foes honest, averaging 141.0 yards per game with 11 touchdowns on the ground. On defense, opponents have averaged 28.6 points and 399.0 yards per game against the Cougars. Houston has 15 takeaways and 14 sacks in seven games and has the conference’s No. 2 red-zone defense at 77.8 percent (21-of-27).

Houston is 4-1 ATS in its last 5 games following a bye week.
Houston is 1-5 ATS in its last 6 road games.

Key Injuries - DT Ell Ash (pectoral) is OUT.

            PROJECTED SCORE: 35

Marshall: Marshall ranks 11th in C-USA in scoring (19.1), passing (204.9) and total offense (332.7) and ninth in rushing (127.9). They have only given up six sacks in seven games, but are a league-worst 13-for-20 inside the red zone. The Thundering Herd is eighth in total defense (427.6) and has allowed 14 rushing touchdowns. Only Southern Miss (nine) has fewer sacks than Marshall (11). LB Maurice Kitchens leads the squad with 51 tackles.

Marshall is 2-5-1 ATS in its last 8 games following a bye week.
Marshall is 1-6 ATS in its last 7 games overall.

Key Injuries - S Omar Brown (foot) is questionable.

                  Thursday, October 30

#24 South Florida at Cincinnati [ESPN | 7:30 PM ET]

South Florida (-2.5, O/U 51): The Bulls offensive line needs to play better against an aggressive Cincinnati defense. With RT Marc Dile leaving last week’s game with a foot injury, QB Matt Grothe was sacked a season-high five times. The Bulls also were held to a school-record low eight yards rushing. If Dile is unable to go this week, freshman Jeremiah Warren could make his first career start. RB Mike Ford is hobbled with an ankle injury and his availability for this game is in serious doubt. DE George Selvie has returned to last year’s form, but the rest of the defense hasn’t done much in recent games. The Bulls have forced only 10 turnovers in eight games.

South Florida is 1-4 ATS in its last 5 games in October.
South Florida is 2-6 ATS in its last 8 games overall.

Key Injuries - RB Mike Ford (ankle) is doubtful.
OT Mike Dile (foot) is probable.

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 27

Cincinnati: The Bearcats will have two offensive game plans ready to go for this week’s game against South Florida. The spread offense’s complete arsenal will be available if junior QB Tony Pike is healthy enough to start. If not, a more scaled-down version will be instituted for Chazz Anderson. Pike re-injured his non-throwing arm, making it a game-time decision between him and the redshirt freshman Anderson. Turnovers, once the calling card for Cincinnati’s defense, have been virtually non-existent this year. The Bearcats, who led the nation in turnover-margin last year at plus-16, are now minus-6. Cincy rank a surprisingly low sixth in total defense in the Big East.

Cincinnati is 4-1 ATS in its last 5 Thursday games.
Cincinnati is 6-1-1 ATS in its last 8 games following a SU loss.

Key Injuries - QB Tony Pike (arm) is questionable.

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 24

                  Saturday, November 1

#8 Florida vs. #6 Georgia at Jacksonville [CBS | 3:30 PM ET]

Florida (-5.5, O/U 56.5): The Gators come into their SEC East showdown with Georgia brimming with confidence. Florida dominated in all three phases against Kentucky. On special teams, Florida blocked two punts and a field goal, with the two blocked punts deep in Kentucky territory setting up to two quick touchdowns. On defense, Florida held Kentucky three-and-out on the first four possessions and held the Wildcats to 29.4 percent (5-of-17) on third-down conversions, On offense, Florida had excellent balance, rushing for 214 yards and passing for 232 yards. For the season, the Gators are rushing for close to 200 yards per game.

Florida is 4-0 ATS in its last 4 games in November.
Florida is 6-1 ATS in its last 7 conference games.

Key Injuries - OT Jim Tartt (shoulder) is questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 35 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

Georgia: The Bulldogs put up their best offensive performance of the season last week when they scored 52 points on LSU. Despite losing two left tackles to season-ending knee injuries, the line has matured to the point where it is no longer a weakness. Georgia’s ability to get Knowshon Moreno on track (163 rushing yards) helped negate LSU’s vaunted pass rush. The Bulldogs are still not playing well on defense and are committing way too many penalties. Georgia gave up 497 yards of offense and allowed 21 points in the second half against LSU, while committing seven penalties for 59 yards.

Georgia is 4-0 ATS in its last 4 neutral site games.
Georgia is 7-2-1 ATS in its last 10 games following a SU win.

Key Injuries - LB Dannell Ellerbe (knee) is questionable.

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 28

#15 Florida State at Georgia Tech [ABC | 3:30 PM ET]

Florida State: The Seminoles travel to Atlanta to face the Yellow Jackets and their option-style offense on Saturday. It’s another defining type of game for FSU. Should they win, three of the final four games are at home, including ACC games with Boston College and Clemson that could clinch the division title. The FSU defense has been strong all year, allowing just 11 touchdowns. The Seminoles’ offensive line continues to struggle against physical defensive fronts and Georgia Tech has done well at getting to the quarterback this season.

Florida State is 7-15 ATS in its last 22 games following a SU win.
Florida State is 4-9-1 ATS in its last 14 games in November.

Key Injuries - RB Antone Smith (elbow) is questionable.

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 17

Georgia Tech (-1.5, O/U 41): The Yellow Jackets need to cut down on turnovers if they plan on upsetting Florida State. Georgia Tech turned it over three times in a disappointing 21-17 home loss to Virginia last week. It seems strange to say a Paul Johnson-coached team needs to work on its ground game, but the Jackets do. They’re averaging less than 4 yards per carry in their last two games and managed just 156 yards on the ground in the loss to the Cavaliers. It won’t get any easier today against a FSU defense that only allows 80 yards per game on the ground.

Georgia Tech is 5-1 ATS in its last 6 games overall.
Georgia Tech is 2-5 ATS in its last 7 home games.

Key Injuries - S Dominique Reese (concussion) is questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 23 (Side Play of the Day)

#1 Texas at #7 Texas Tech [ABC | 8 PM ET]

Texas (-5.5, O/U 76.5): The No. 1 Longhorns continue to run the gauntlet. After beating Oklahoma, Missouri and Oklahoma State, Texas now travels to Lubbock to take on No. 6 Texas Tech. For the first time, some chinks were exposed in the Texas rush defense last week. The Longhorns were allowing just 48.1 rushing yards per game, the nation’s second-best average, yet permitted 217 yards to Oklahoma State. However, that’s not likely to be an issue Saturday against pass happy Texas Tech. This should be a shootout tonight, as Texas is averaging 486 yards per game this season.

Texas is 8-1 ATS in its last 9 games overall.
Texas is 4-0 ATS in its last 4 road games.

Key Injuries - CB Chykie Brown (ankle) is questionable.

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 44

Texas Tech: The Red Raiders are coming off a dismantling of Kansas. Quarterback Graham Harrell completed 81 percent of his passes for 386 yards and five scores while running for 27 yards and another touchdown in the win. He found fellow Heisman candidate Michael Crabtree twice for touchdowns. While the offense put up 556 yards, the defense held KU’s Todd Reesing to 154 passing yards, his lowest total of the season. The Red Raiders will need a similar defensive performance tonight if they want to slow down the red hot Colt McCoy.

Home team is 5-2 ATS in their last 7 meetings.
Texas Tech is 0-4-1 ATS in its last 5 games following a ATS win.

Key Injuries - DT Rajon Henley (knee) is questionable.

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 38
