Brett Favre and the Jets are the biggest favorite on the board for Week 8 of the National Football League season. Here's a look at the matchups in your Daily Sports Roundup.

The Gridiron Spotlight

The Jets have had a middling start to the 2008 campaign - they're just 3-3 both straight-up and against-the-spread. Still, that's good enough to have them pegged as 13.5-point home favorites against the sputtering Chiefs on Sunday afternoon. Kansas City is just 1-5 (2-4 ATS) on the season, and they'll have to make due without their top two quarterbacks and running back Larry Johnson on Sunday. The total is listed at 39 points.

The other big favorites on Sunday are the Texans, who are favored by 9.5 points at home against Cincinnati, and the Eagles, who are favored by 9 points at home against Atlanta. As well, the Chargers are pegged as 3-point favorites in their game against the Saints in London, and the Cowboys are favored by just 2.5 over the visiting Buccaneers.

Rounding out the NFL's Sunday schedule: Washington (-7.5) at Detroit, Buffalo (-1.5) at Miami, St. Louis at New England (-7), Oakland at Baltimore (-7), Arizona at Carolina (-4), Cleveland at Jacksonville (-7), and the Giants at Pittsburgh (-3). Also, the Niners and their new head coach are listed as 5-point home favorites against the fading Seahawks.

Other Notable Events

It's Game 4 of the World Series on Sunday night, as the Rays and Phillies play the second of their three games in Philadelphia. Tampa Bay is slated to go with Andy Sonnanstine in this one; the righthander held the Red Sox to three earned runs over 7 1-3 innings in his ALCS outing. Penciled in for the Phillies is Joe Blanton, who allowed three earned runs on seven hits over five innings in his NLCS start against the Dodgers.

The Rest of the Schedule

There's a single college football game on the Sunday schedule, with Central Florida at No. 22 Tulsa. The 7-0 (5-1 ATS) Golden Hurricane are coming off a 77-35 pounding of UTEP, and they're listed as big 23.5-point favorites against Central Florida. The Knights (2-4, 2-2-1 ATS) fell 20-14 to Miami last time out, and have lost four of their past five.

The Sprint Cup Series will stage the Pep Boys Auto 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Sunday afternoon, with standings leader Jimmie Johnson pegged at 7/1 odds to take the checkered flag. Johnson leads Greg Biffle (8/1 this weekend) by 149 points in the standings, and Jeff Burton (18/1) by 152 points. Carl Edwards, who is now 198 points back of first place, is pegged as the 5/1 favorite to get the victory in Atlanta on Sunday.

Finally, the Canadian Football League wraps up Week 18 of its schedule with Winnipeg at Montreal on Sunday afternoon. The Alouettes (11-5, 10-6 ATS) are listed as big 9.5-point home favorites in this Eastern matchup against the Bombers (6-10, 5-10-1 ATS).

A Peek at the Future

It'll be Indianapolis at Tennessee in tomorrow's Monday Night Football matchup, with the Titans listed as 4-point home favorites. Tennessee is 6-0 both straight-up and against-the-spread on the season, while Indianapolis is 3-3 and 2-4 ATS heading into this divisional battle . . . the World Series continues on Monday night with the Rays playing Game 5 in Philadelphia. The set would then shift back to Tampa for Game 6.

Winnipeg (6-10) @ Montreal (11-5)-- Bombers lost twice to Montreal earlier in year, 38-24 in Quebec back in Week 2 (-1), then 39-11 at home in Week 7 (+2). Alouettes outrushed Winnnipeg 321-90 in those games. Montreal won nine of last eleven games, covered last four home games-- they scored 30+ points in every game but one this season, averaging 40.8 ppg in their last five games. Five of last six Bomber games stayed under.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (6-10) vs. Montreal Alouettes (11-5) (Montreal -9.5)

This is a meaningless game for both teams as far as the playoff picture is concerned. Winnipeg will host the Eastern Division semifinal and Montreal will host the Eastern Division final the next week.

That said, there is a strong possibility the Bombers will be the Alouettes’ opponents Nov. 15, with the winner staying in Montreal for the Grey Cup. So, this may quite be a game where both teams will want to establish some sort of psychological advantage.

Montreal won both its games against Winnipeg so far this season, a 38-24 victory at home in July and a 39-11 triumph in Winnipeg in August.

Avon Cobourne will be absent for the Alouettes but Mike Imoh has been pretty efficient replacing him. Safety Etienne Boulay, who missed the last three games with an ankle injury, will be back in action.

The Montreal defensive unit will want to redeem itself after giving up 34 points last week to the weakest offense in the CFL.

* 1911 - Danny Murphy of Philadelphia had four hits as the Athletics beat the New York Giants 13-2 to win the World Series in six games. The A's put the game out of reach with a seven-run seventh inning.

* 1931 - Charles Comiskey dies at age 72. The White Sox owner and pioneer player never recovered from the betrayal of the 1919 World Series.

* 1950 - The Baseball Writers of America select Yankees shortstop Phil Rizzuto as AL MVP. Rizzuto had 200 hits, 125 runs scored, and a .324 batting average, but drove in just 66 runs.

* 1971 - Oakland's Vida Blue wins the AL Cy Young Award by a 98-85 margin over Mickey Lolich of the Tigers. Blue was 24-8 for the A's, posting 301 strikeouts, eight shutouts, and a 1.82 ERA. Ferguson Jenkins won the Cy Young Award in the NL.

* 1977 - Sparky Lyle becomes the first AL reliever to win the Cy Young Award. Lyle leads the league with 72 appearances, posting a 13-5 record with 26 saves and a 2.17 ERA.

* 1979 - Commissioner Bowie Kuhn notifies Hall of Famer Willie Mays that if he accepts a position with Bally Manufacturing Corporation, owner of several gambling casinos, he must disassociate himself from major league baseball. Mays, a part-time coach and goodwill ambassador for the Mets, will relinquish his duties upon accepting Bally's job offer.

* 1982 - Steve Carlton becomes the first pitcher to win four Cy Young Awards. The Phils 37-year-old lefthander, who led the NL in wins (23), innings (295.2), strikeouts (286), and shutouts (six), was a previous winner in 1972, 1977, and 1980.

* 1985 - Dane Iorg's two-run single and a disputed call by first base umpire Don Denkinger in the ninth inning gave the Kansas City Royals a 2-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals and tied the World Series after six games. St. Louis scored its run on a bloop single by Brian Harper in the eighth inning.

* 1991 - Kirby Puckett prevents two Atlanta runs with a leaping catch in the third inning and then lofts a sacrifice fly in the fifth to give the Twins the lead in Game Six. The Braves tie it in the seventh, but Puckett turned out the lights in the 10th with a home run to force a seventh game.

* 1995 - Orel Hershiser allows just two runs over eight innings and Jose Mesa survives a two-run home run by Ryan Klesko in the ninth inning to give the Indians a 5-4 win in Game Five.

* 1996 - A three-run third inning is all the Yankees need. Series MVP John Wetteland pitches out of trouble in the ninth as the Yankees win the World Series for the first time since 1978.

* 1997 - Edgar Renteria ended one of the most thrilling Game 7s ever, singling with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the Florida Marlins their first World Series championship with a 3-2 win over the Cleveland Indians. The 5-year-old Marlins became the youngest expansion team to win a championship.

* 1998 - The New York Mets announced All-Star catcher Mike Piazza agreed to a seven-year, $91 million contract, the richest deal in baseball history.

Tampa Bay at Philadelphia (-105, 9.5)

Philadelphia needed a couple of unusual plays to take a 2-1 lead over the Tampa Bay Rays in the World Series.

It was a sloppy finish, but Philadelphia has good reason to be hopeful moving forward. Howard, who led the majors with 48 homers and 146 RBIs in the regular season, hadn't gone deep in 42 postseason at-bats before he drove one out in the sixth that gave the Phillies a 4-1 lead.

"It wasn't anything mechanical," Howard said. "It's just seeing the ball, picking up the pitch and reacting to it. It's been a slow but steady process."

The slugger has struggled in the postseason after making a case for NL MVP by batting .352 with 11 homers and a club-record 32 RBIs in September. He was hitting .250 (10-for-40) with three RBIs in 11 postseason contests before Game 3.

A streaky hitter, Howard can carry Philadelphia when he gets hot. He helped the Phillies hit an NL-best 214 homers in the regular season, and they have five against the Rays. Ruiz also connected and Chase Utley hit his second homer of the Series on Saturday.

The Phillies will now face Tampa Bay's Andy Sonnanstine (13-9, 4.38 ERA). He's never faced the Phillies, but Sonnanstine has been a reliable arm on a Rays team filled with hard throwers, going 2-0 with a 3.46 ERA in two playoff starts.

"The guy is a winner," Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon said. "I've talked about him for years. A guy like this comes through the minor league system, or even gets drafted in the first place - a guy like Andy to get drafted in the first place takes excellent scouting as far as I'm concerned. You have to read into the guy's heart."

In his last start, the right-hander pitched 7 1-3 sharp innings on Oct. 14 as Tampa Bay took a 3-1 lead in the AL championship series against Boston, winning 13-4. He gave up four runs - three earned - and six hits.

Sonnanstine has allowed three earned runs or less in five of his last six starts overall.

Philadelphia will counter with Joe Blanton (4-0, 4.20), who was acquired in a trade with Oakland in July. Blanton has struggled against Tampa Bay, going 2-3 with a 6.05 ERA in eight starts.

While pitching for the Athletcs on May 19, Blanton gave up four runs and six hits in six innings versus the Rays as Oakland lost 7-6 in 13.
