As reported by Mike Pereira the N.F.L.`s director of officiating qoute " this was not a mistake in judgement , it was a lack of knowledge on the crews fault " as he stated that they made a grave error in the Monday Nighter ( Indy vs. Tampa Bay ).
3:37 letf in the 4th. quarter 35 to 21 T.B. and Indys kicker Mike Vanderjagts onside kick sailed " in the air " and was caught by safety Idrees Bashir at Indys 42 yard line . Rule 10 , section 1 , article 4 states that the recieving team " must " be given the chance to catch any ball in the air , and it was . The fact that Tampa Bays reciever was taken out by a big hit by the other team should have resulted in a 15 yard penalty that would have given T.B. the ball at Indys 27 yard line ( 15 yds from the spot of the foul )
And the rest is history !
