Good Luck on day #298 of 2008!

For College Football and the NFL, look for separate threads:

    • “NCAA Week9 Trends and Indexes 10/21 through 10/26”
    • “NFL Week 8 Trends and Indexes 10/26 and 10/27”

For now, the balance of the sports menu in this thread will consist of Major League Baseball, the Canadian Football League, and the NHL until their seasons are played out. Also, general sports news and notes will still be posted here.

    NOTE:
As information becomes available, we will attempt to post the trends and indexes as soon as possible.

    Daily Sports Roundup

    Friday, October 24

A dozen National Hockey League teams and the unbeaten Boise State Broncos are all in action on Friday night. Here's a look at the matchups in your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

No. 13 Boise State will be trying to improve their record to a perfect 7-0 on Friday night when they play on the road against San Jose State. The Broncos are 6-0 straight-up and 3-2 against-the-spread on the season, and they cruised past Hawaii 27-7 last time out. The Spartans have been lucrative for supporters at 5-2 SU and 5-1 ATS on the year, and they're coming off a 31-14 victory versus New Mexico State in their last game.

The oddsmakers like the Broncos in this matchup, as they've been set as 7-point road favorites. The total for the contest opened at 44 points, but has since declined to 42.5.

    Other Notable Events

The New York Rangers return to the ice on the road on Friday night, and they'll be trying to shake off a two-game losing streak. The Rangers fell 5-4 in overtime to the Red Wings last Saturday, and they were then edged 2-1 by the Stars on Monday night. New York's Friday opponents will be the Columbus Blue Jackets, who are 3-3-0 on the year.

Rounding out the NHL's Friday schedule: Anaheim at Ottawa, Atlanta at Detroit, San Jose at Florida, Los Angeles at St. Louis, and Philadelphia at New Jersey. The Flyers and Devils will then travel to Philly for the second of a home-and-home on Saturday.

    The Rest of the Schedule

The NBA wraps up its preseason schedule on Friday night with six games on tap: New Jersey at New York, Washington at Cleveland, Milwaukee at Chicago, Miami at San Antonio, Denver at the Clippers, and Oklahoma City at the Lakers. The Lakers are back in action on opening night next Tuesday; they'll play host to Portland to get things going.

As well, there's a single Canadian Football League game on the Friday schedule, with Calgary playing on the road in Hamilton. The 11-5 (11-5 ATS) Stampeders are pegged as 10.5-point road favorites against the 3-13 (6-9-1 ATS) Tiger-Cats, with the total at 57.

    News from the Wire

Browns tight end Kellen Winslow has appealed his one-game suspension . . . Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck is not expected to return from his back injury this weekend . . . Steelers running back Willie Parker should be back on the field on Sunday. . . Cardinals wide receiver Anquan Boldin has been cleared to return from his head and jaw injuries, but it remains to be seen how much he will play this weekend.

    A Peek at the Future

The top-ranked Longhorns are pegged as 12.5-point favorites at home against No. 7 Oklahoma State on Saturday. As well, No. 11 LSU is a 2-point favorite at home against No. 9 Georgia, while No. 3 Penn State is favored by 2.5 points on the road against No. 10 Ohio State . . . the other NBA games on the schedule for opening night next Tuesday are Milwaukee at Chicago, and Cleveland at the defending champions from Boston.

        This Day in MLB

        MLB

        Friday, October 24

        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
        This day in Baseball….
        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On October 24 in Baseball History...

        * 1911 - The World Series between the New York Giants and the Philadelphia Athletics was resumed after six days of rain, and Chief Bender beat Christy Mathewson 4-2 to give the A's 3-1 lead.

        * 1939 - The AL MVP is Joe DiMaggio, with Jimmie Foxx the runner-up.

        * 1956 - The AP names Cincinnati manager Birdie Tebbets as its NL Manager of the Year.

        * 1963 - Sandy Koufax is the unanimous winner of the Cy Young Award.

        * 1972 - Hall of Famer Jackie Robinson dies of heart disease at age 53. Robinson had become the first black major league player of the 20th century with the 1947 Dodgers.

        * 1981 - The Los Angeles Dodgers came back to beat the New York Yankees 8-7 in a sloppy 3{-hour marathon and tied the World Series 2-2. The Yankees blew a 6-3 lead. On one play, Reggie Jackson lost the ball in the sun and it bounced off his shoulder for a two-base error.

        * 1985 - Danny Jackson's five-hitter cut St. Louis' lead to 3-2 in the World Series as the Kansas City Royals took Game 5, 6-1. Willie Wilson's two-run triple highlighted a three-run second inning and chased starter Ken Forsch.

        * 1986 - Bill Russell, 38, announces his retirement. He is the last member of the Dodgers' Garvey-Lopes-Russell-Cey 1970s infield and is second on the club's all-time list with 2,183 games played.

        * 1987 - Kent Hrbek's grand slam highlighted a 15-hit barrage as the Minnesota Twins pounded the St. Louis Cardinals 11-5 at the Metrodome to force the World Series to a seventh game.

        * 1991 - The Braves take the lead in the Series with a 14-5 rout of the Twins. Atlanta blows open a 5-3 game with nine runs in the last two innings.

        * 1992 - The Toronto Blue Jays took baseball's championship outside the United States for the first time ever, beating the Atlanta Braves 4-3 in 11 innings in Game 6 of the World Series.

        * 1993 - Joe Carter became just the second player in baseball history to end a World Series with a home run, hitting a three-run shot off Mitch Williams in the ninth inning that gave the Toronto Blue Jays their second straight championship with an 8-6 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 6.

        * 1994 - Atlanta's Greg Maddux became the first pitcher to win three straight Cy Young Awards, unanimously sweeping the NL honor. Maddux was 16-6 with a 1.56 ERA, the third-lowest in 75 years.

        * 1995 - Eddie Murray singles home pinch-runner Alvaro Espinoza in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the Indians their first win in a World Series in 47 years. The Tribe's 7-6 victory over the Braves fittingly occurs in the first-ever Series game at Jacobs Field.

        * 1996 - The Yankees lay claim to the last game in the history of Atlanta's Fulton County Stadium. The Yankees, who finish the postseason with an 8-0 road record, are helped by poor Atlanta outfield defense and some great plays from their own outfielders as Andy Pettitte outduels John Smoltz 1-0 in Game Five.

We will update when projected scores and lines are available.

Tampa Bay Rays at Philadelphia Phillies [FOX | 8:20 PM ET]

Rays: After losing his first postseason start against the White Sox, Matt Garza was money in both outings versus Boston, allowing just two runs over 13 innings of work and striking out 14 batters. Garza has been sensational at home but just average on the road this season where he’s 4-6 with a 4.53 ERA. This will be Garza’s first-ever appearance against the Phillies.

Rays are 5-1 in their last 6 interleague road games.
Rays are 1-4 in Garza's last 5 road starts.

Key Injuries - RP Troy Percival (back) is OUT.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Phillies (NA): Jamie Moyer hasn’t fared well this postseason, losing both starts after allowing eight runs over 5.1 innings. Both of Moyer’s playoff starts have been on the road but he’s actually pitched better away from home this season. He’s just 6-4 at Citizen’s Bank Park with a 4.61 ERA. Moyer has good career numbers against the Rays though. In 15 career starts versus Tampa, he’s 8-4 with a strong 2.85 ERA.

Phillies are 4-0 in their last 4 playoff home games.
Phillies are 0-5 in their last 5 interleague home games.

              Key Injuries - NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

                            Philadelphia at New Jersey

With a young group of talented group of gritty forwards, Philadelphia became a bit of a trendy Stanley Cup pick leading up to opening night. Looks like they have some serious work to do just to get out of the basement of the Atlantic Division.

Defense and goaltending are the main issues again this year. The club has allowed 17 goals over its last three games and Martin Biron is working on a 5.00 goals against average on the year. Antero Nittymaki isn’t much better at 3.80. Meanwhile the defense outside of Kimmo Timonen and Braydon Coburn has been just as terrible, checking in with a combined -12 rating between the seven blueliners.

This is just the kind of team the Devils feast on. New Jersey’s offense ranks third in the league in shots on goal and its defense allows only 1.5 goals per game – good for second best in the show.

                            Pick: New Jersey (-170)

                            Los Angeles at St. Louis

The Blues have a nice mix of veteran savvy and youthful enthusiasm. Keith Tkachuk and Paul Kariya are both off to great starts and young guys like Brad Boyes, David Perron, and T.J. Oshie are riding shotgun along for the ride. So far, the Blues have it locked on cruise control, averaging 3.83 goals per game.

That’s helped over bettors cash in on each of St. Louis’ first six games and that trend seems unlikely to be snapped against the Kings. L.A. has a young defense and goaltender Jason LaBarbera is slumping along with a .889 save percentage.

                            Pick: over (5.5)

                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
