Ice picks: Thursday's best NHL bets

Buffalo at Minnesota (-120, 5.5)

The best game on Thursday’s board should be a tight-checking matchup. Unbeaten Buffalo is off to a hot start with Ryan Miller dominating the blue ice with a 1.45 goals against average after he signed a five-year deal in the offseason. Meanwhile, Minnesota’s Niklas Backstrom has been just as tough through his four-game winning streak, allowing 1.72 goals a game with a shutout in his back pocket already.

Wild coach Jacques Lemaire, typically a defensive tyrant, is letting out the reins for the offense a bit so far this year, but this team still wins with defense first – as sniper Marian Gaborik will attest to as he bides his time on the trading block. Gaborik, by the way, is also questionable again for Thursday’s game with a lower-body injury, so read into that what you will.

Hard-fought battle between two of the early-season’s top teams looking to make a statement. Under might be worth a look.

Washington at Phoenix (-115, 5.5)

A quick glance at Washington’s lineup and you’d have a tough time believing the Caps were held off the scoreboard during a nine-minute power play Tuesday against the Flames.

It wasn’t due to lack of effort. With Alexander Ovechkin flying around all over the ice, you’d think he would be able to net one and that’s not even mentioning Alexander Semin, Mike Green, Michael Nylander, Nicklas Backstrom, or Sergei Fedorov. This team is going to really start lighting the lamp at some point and Thursday might be as good a time as any after bench boss Bruce Boudreau ripped his club for being “too cute” with the puck after the Calgary loss.

They’ll get some pucks to the net against Phoenix and the Coyotes’ young offense should give over bettors a boost too.
