    Trends and Indexes
    Thursday, October 23

Good Luck on day #297 of 2008!

For College Football and the NFL, look for separate threads:

    • “NCAA Week9 Trends and Indexes 10/21 through 10/26”
    • “NFL Week 8 Trends and Indexes 10/26 and 10/27”

For now, the balance of the sports menu in this thread will consist of Major League Baseball, the Canadian Football League, and the NHL until their seasons are played out. Also, general sports news and notes will still be posted here.

    NOTE:
As information becomes available, we will attempt to post the trends and indexes as soon as possible.
Information is posted from what we believe are reliable sources.

    Daily Sports Roundup

    Thursday, October 23

There are a pair of college football games on the schedule for Thursday night, while the Phillies and Rays play Game 2 of the World Series. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

West Virginia will host Auburn in one of two college football games on Thursday night, and neither of those teams have performed well for their supporters this season. The Mountaineers beat Syracuse 17-6 last time out, but that margin wasn't big enough to keep them from dropping to 1-4 against-the-spread on the season (they're 4-2 straight-up). The Tigers are even worse at 1-6 ATS (4-3 SU), and they lost 25-22 to Arkansas in their last game. West Virginia is pegged as a 3-point home favorite, with a total of 38.

In the other game it's New Mexico at Air Force in a battle between second-tier Mountain West teams. The Lobos absolutely crushed San Diego State 70-7 last time out to improve to 4-4 (5-3 ATS) on the season. The Falcons are coming off a slim 29-28 win over UNLV which pushed them to 5-2 (4-2 ATS). Air Force is listed as a 5-point favorite.

    Other Notable Events

It'll be Brett Myers versus James Shields in Game 2 of the World Series on Thursday night. Myers picked up a victory against the Dodgers in the NLCS in his last outing, but it was an ugly performance - five earned runs on six hits and four walks over just five innings of work. The righthander gave up just two runs in his NLDS win over Milwaukee.

Shields was tagged with the loss twice in the ALCS against the Red Sox, although he wasn't pounded in either outing. The righthander allowed two earned runs on six hits over 7 1-3 innings in his first start against Boston, and then surrendered three earned runs on nine hits in 5 2-3 innings. Tampa only scored two runs over those two games.

    The Rest of the Schedule

The puck will drop on seven games in the National Hockey League on Thursday night, with the top matchup in Minnesota where the Wild will host the Sabres. Those two teams are a combined 9-0-1 so far this season. Also on the NHL's schedule: Toronto at Boston, Dallas at the Islanders, Calgary at Nashville, Carolina at Pittsburgh, and Edmonton at Colorado. As well, the Caps will hit the ice in Phoenix to close the night.

There's also a full slate of NBA preseason games on Thursday, with Atlanta at Detroit, Milwaukee at Minnesota, Miami at New Orleans, Indiana at Dallas, Portland at Utah, Oklahoma City at Phoenix, and Houston at Sacramento. As well, Charlotte will be in Los Angeles to play the Lakers; Kobe Bryant left Tuesday night's game with a knee injury.

    News from the Wire

Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo says he won't play against Tampa Bay this weekend . . . the Chiefs added quarterback Quinn Gray to their roster . . . Broncos linebacker Boss Bailey is out for the season with a knee injury, while defensive back Champ Bailey will miss at least a month with a groin injury . . . Browns tight end Kellen Winslow has been suspended by the team for one game, and will sit out this week against the Jags.

    A Peek at the Future

The World Series resumes Saturday in Philadelphia, with the Rays' Matt Garza battling the Phillies' Jamie Moyer. Garza allowed just two earned runs on eight hits over 13 innings in the ALCS versus the Red Sox . . . the Chargers opened as 3-point favorites against the Saints for their game at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, with the total at 47 points . . . Carl Edwards is the 5/1 favorite to win this week's Sprint Cup race in Atlanta.

      Six-pack for Thursday

-- No NFL player is underpaid; Anquan Boldin wants to play this week with eight screws in his face; he would have missed 2 games after having his face broken in the Meadowlands against the Jets.

-- Baseball players feel a twinge and are out for a week; Boldin will miss two games after having his face rebuilt. Go figure.

-- The two Florida baseball teams, Rays and Marlins, are now 8-0 in postseason series; Tampa Bay is trying to make it 9-0.

-- When Ben Zobrist started in RF last night, it was just his second career start in RF; then the first batter made him run for a ball.....

-- Seems like a long time ago, but the Lions were a road favorite in their season opener, in the Georgia Dome. They still haven't won.

-- When was last time Arizona State was ranked in preseason top 25 college hoop poll, and Arizona wasn't?

Thursday's List of 13: Our college football List of 13........

This isn't a ranking, but teams that made an impression for whatever reason. We're heading into second half of season, teams are trying to get bowl eligible- some of these teams haven't been there in a while....

        13) Florida State-- Won last three games, scoring 35.3 ppg; they have converted 21 of last 34 on third down, so QB Ponder is making plays as Jimbo Fisher gets comfortable calling most of the shots.....

        12) Michigan-- Outscored 66-6 in second half of last three games; at 2-5, are likely to miss a bowl for first time since the 60's.

        11) San Diego State-- In last three games, Aztecs were outscored by a 70-14 margin, and allowed 383-401-419 rushing yards. They have to play BYU and Utah still-- this could get really ugly.

        10) USC-- Have outscored opponents 116-6 in second half this year but are on upset alert this week, going to Tucson to play Arizona and its fine senior QB Tuitama.

        9) Virginia-- Al Groh was 1-3 and on hot seat, now he won three in a row, all as an underdog; he is like Wayne Fontes back when he was at Detroit; every time he got in trouble, he won some games and got off the hot seat. Strong coaching job by Groh this month, though.

        8) Vanderbilt-- 9.5-point favorite this week vs Duke; if they win, the Commodores are bowl eligible, and headed to forst bowl since 1982. That will be a happy day in Nashville. First, they have to win.

        7) Maryland-- Cybil's favorite team; they lose to Middle Tennessee, beat Cal; they lose 31-0 to Virginia, beat Wake Forest 26-0. No one, and I mean no one, has any idea how they'll play week-to-week.

        6) Northern Illinois-- Lost 70-21 to Toledo LY, then got revenge for that debacle by whacking the Rockets 38-7 Saturday. They've had a lot of close games, the Huskies, but seem to be getting better.

        5) Tulsa-- Go up against Game 4 of World Series Sunday night; this is a high-powered team that hung 77 on UTEP last week, after they had lost to the Miners LY. An impressive, well-balanced offense.

        4) LSU-- No easy days in SEC; after trips to Florida, South Carolina, Georgia Dawgs come to Baton Rouge this week. How did Les Miles get himself in position of having so little experience at quarterback?

        3) Alabama-- Still crushing teams in first half, but young Tide, in the last two games, have been outscored 31-3 in second half. Little doubt that Saban is coach of the year-- can Tide have strong November?

        2) Oklahoma State-- Cowboys led Texas at halftime in four of the last five meetings, then collapsed in second half and lost all five. This is a chance to erase some of that misery. Should be a terrific game.

        1) Texas-- Wow, the Big 12 is strong this season. Longhorns scored 96 points against Oklahoma, Missouri, and they're strong teams. It looks like Colt McCoy is frontrunner for the Heisman.

                This day in Baseball….
                --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On October 23 in Baseball History...

                * 1910 - Philadelphia's Jack Coombs won his third game of the World Series, beating the Chicago Cubs 7-2 as the Athletics took the championship in five games. Eddie Collins had three hits, including two doubles, for the A's.

                * 1920 - The Chicago grand jury indictment adds the names of former featherweight boxing champ Abe Attell, Hal Chase, and Bill Burns as go-betweens in the 1919 World Series scandal. Ed Cicotte, Joe Jackson, Lefty Williams and Happy Felsch sign confessions, which they later recant.

                * 1923 - Babe Ruth makes a postseason appearance in a New York Giants uniform as the Giants defeat the minor-league Baltimore Orioles 9-0. Ruth hits a home run over the right field roof at the Polo Grounds. The game is a benefit for destitute former Giants owner John Day.

                * 1935 - Gabby Hartnett is selected by the BBWAA as the NL MVP, with Dizzy Dean the runner-up.

                * 1945 - Branch Rickey announces the signing of Jackie Robinson by the Dodgers organization.

                * 1974 - The Cubs trade sweet-swinging Billy Williams, a fixture at Wrigley Field for 16 years, to the A's for second baseman Manny Trillo and pitchers Darold Knowles and Bob Locker.

                * 1979 - Billy Martin is involved in a barroom altercation with Joseph Cooper, a Minnesota marshmallow salesman. Cooper requires 15 stitches to close a gash in his lip.

                * 1981 - The Los Angeles Dodgers beat New York 5-4 in the third game of the World Series, narrowing the Yankees' lead to 2-1.

                * 1984 - Rick Sutcliffe, who was 16-1 for the Cubs after arriving from Cleveland two days before the June 15 trading deadline, is a unanimous choice as NL Cy Young Award winner.

                * 1985 - John Tudor hurled a five-hit, 3-0 victory over the Kansas City Royals, giving the St. Louis Cardinals a 3-1 lead in the World Series.

                * 1986 - Bruce Hurst's complete-game victory gave the Boston Red Sox a 4-2 win and 3-2 lead in the World Series against the New York Mets. Hurst scattered 10 hits with one walk and six strikeouts.1991: Mark Lemke hits his second triple of the night in the ninth inning and then scores on a close play on Jerry Willard's sacrifice fly for Atlanta's 3-2 win over the Twins.

                * 1993 - In one of the most dramatic endings in World Series history, Joe Carter hits a three-run, ninth inning home run off Mitch Williams for an 8-6 win and Toronto's second straight World Championship. Paul Molitor, who hits .500 in 24 at bats, is MVP while Philadelphia's Lenny Dykstra, who hit .348 with four home runs, did everything except pitch.

                * 1996 - The Braves jump to a 6-0 lead, but the Yankees mount their biggest comeback in World Series history with a three-run home run by Jim Leyritz that ties the game in the eighth inning. After Bernie Williams is intentionally walked with runners on first and second in the 10th, Steve Avery walks Wade Boggs to bring in the deciding run.

                * 1997 - The Marlins move within one win of their first World Series title as Moises Alou hits his second three-run home run of the Series against Cleveland's Orel Hershiser. Rookie Livan Hernandez pitches into the ninth inning of Game Five and Florida holds off the Indians 8-7.

                    Thursday, October 23

                    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With Shields on hill and trailing series 1-0, Thursday is bigger game for Rays than Philly; Tampa lost Game 1 in ALCS and still prevailed, but would be tough to go to Philly down 2-0 and win. Rays scored total of one run in losing Shields' last two starts vs Boston, but overall, they're 14-5 at the Trop when Shields starts. Myers allowed 23 runs in his last 20 IP-- he is 1-1, 5.25 in two playoff starts. Oddly, he had been super on road in September, going 3-1, 2.06 in his last five road starts, before Florida got ten runs off him in four IP in his last start on foreign soil.

Philadelphia Phillies at Tampa Bay Rays [FOX | 8:29 PM ET]

Phillies: Brett Myers didn’t pitch great his last time out against the Dodgers allowing five runs over five innings but he did enough to get the win. One problem for the Phillies tonight is Myers was awful on the road this year and this will be his first road start of the post season. Myers was just 3-8 on the road this year with a lofty 6.21 ERA.

Phillies are 4-0 in their last 4 Thursday games.
Phillies are 6-1 in their last 7 during game 2 of a series.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Rays (-150, O/U 8.5): After winning his first playoff start against the White Sox, James Shields lost his two outings versus Boston, allowing six runs in 13 innings of work. Shields was sensational at home this year, going 9-2 with a 2.59 ERA. Shields has one career start versus Philly, getting the win after giving up three runs in six innings.

Rays are 5-1 in Shields' last 6 starts with 4 days of rest.
The OVER is 5-0 in Shields' last 5 interleague starts.

Key Injuries - RP Troy Percival (back) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (Side Play of the Day)

                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Brett Myers (Philadelphia Phillies) vs. James Shields (Tampa Bay Rays)

Brett Myers RHP (10-13, 4.55 ERA)

Myers was reliable in his first two starts of the postseason. He is 2-0 with a 5.25 ERA and takes the mound for the first time in almost two weeks Thursday. His most recent effort was a five-run, five-inning start in an 8-5 Game 2 win over the Dodgers.

Myers’ wins came at home, but now the righty toes the slab in a rocking Tropicana Field. He is 9-5 at home but has a less-than-inspiring 3-8 record and 6.21 ERA on the road. He has never faced the Rays and put up a 0-1 mark in two interleague starts with an ERA over 10.00 against American League hitters.

James Shields RHP (14-8, 3.56 ERA)

Shields' 1-2 record isn't an accurate example of his performance in October. The young right-hander has a 3.72 ERA over those starts and allowed just five collective runs in those two losses.

He's comfy at home with a 10-4 record inside Tropicana. He has a 2.74 home-field ERA and a 13-6 strikeout-to-walk ratio in his three postseason starts.

Shields has one career win over the Phillies. He gave up just three runs in six innings of work for a 10-4 Tampa Bay win back in 2006. He was 1-0 in two starts against National League opponents this season for an interleague ERA of 2.70

Philadelphia Phillies at Tampa Bay Rays (-150, 8.5)

In arguably one of the better individual rags-to-riches stories recently, Brett Myers will try to give the Phillies a commanding edge as they meet the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 2 on Thursday night at the Tropicana Field.

Behind Chase Utley, Cole Hamels and Brad Lidge, Philadelphia showed virtually no rust after a six-day layoff following its pennant-clinching win over the Los Angeles Dodgers and posted a 3-2 win in Game 1 on Wednesday.

Utley hit a two-run homer in the first inning off Scott Kazmir to stake Philadelphia to an early lead. The three-time All-Star second baseman, who had a career-high 33 homers in the regular season, became the 34th player to go deep in his first Series at-bat.

The team that won the opener has captured 10 of the last 11 Series, and Philadelphia has been in this position before - in 1980, the Phillies defeated Kansas City 7-6 in Game 1 and went on to capture the franchise's only championship.

Though Tampa Bay had the best home record in the majors during the regular season (57-24), it had no answer for Hamels. Akinori Iwamura had three of the Rays' five hits and Carl Crawford homered, but budding stars B.J. Upton and Evan Longoria were held in check.

"I don't feel we were trying too hard," Longoria said of Upton and himself. "Good pitching is going to beat good hitting every time. That's all there is to it."

While that adage may be true, starting a World Series game was probably the furthest thing from Myers' mind on July 1 when he was sent to the minors to try and shake a season-long slump. The Phillies' opening-day starter pitched twice for Triple-A Lehigh Valley and once for Double-A Reading, going 1-3 with a 3.00 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 27 innings.

The slump Myers (10-13, 4.65 ERA) battled this year was most evident on the road. In his first 10 outings away from Philadelphia, he was 0-6 with a 7.91 ERA.

After losing both of his starts to Boston in the AL championship series, James Shields (14-8, 3.56) will try to even the series and keep the Rays from being in a difficult position. Only 11 teams have come back from an 0-2 deficit to the win the World Series, the last being the New York Yankees against Atlanta in 1996.

"It's never easy when you're down 0-1," Shields said. "But I think we've been pretty resilient all year long."

                            Pick: Rays
