I really like the Rays in this series. The Phillies have some big bats in Utley & Howard but right now, today, i think Longoria & Upton are just as dangerous from the opposite side of the plate. Both lineups are solid but if i had to choose, i would give the Edge to the Rays right now.
As far as pitching goes, i give the Edge once again to the Rays. Hamels is a beast but the three that follow him do not do much for me. I would take Shields, Garza and Sonnanstine over Myers, Moyer and Blanton in a heartbeat. I think the Phillies have the pitching Edge in game 1 but when you add the Home Field Advantage to Tampa Bay, i think it evens out. These teams have not played since 2006 and Tropicana Field can be a strange place to play if you are not very familiar with it. The Rays love it at home and they had the Best Home Record in baseball this year. As far as the Bullpen goes, i would love to give the advantage to the Phillies here but the X Factor named David Price will be a Huge weapon for the Rays late in a game when Utley and Howard come up. The bullpen is a tough call (IMO) because of the Price factor.
So the Rays had the best home record in Baseball (57-24), They Won 14 of Kazmir's 16 starts at home this year and when they have had crowds of 30,000 or more at home this season, they are a startling (24-6) including the Postseason. Simply put, they are young and they love the energy their crowd brings. That sums up my reasoning for game 1.
You want some irony too 'cuz this series has it. Brad Lidge didn't lose or blow a game all year. Well, he actually did once but it didn't count against him because it happened in the All Star game. Lidge received the loss in that game and it was the only game he lost all season. The winning pitcher in that All Star game? You guessed it, Scott Kazmir. That game gave home field advantage to the Rays and the American League in the WS. At the time, nobody knew how dominant the Rays would be at home and nobody knew the 2 pitchers involved in the decision were going to be facing each other in the WS. Now that is ironic!
You want a little more irony? Tampa Bay owns 2 Titles (total) in the 4 major sports. The Tampa Bay Bucs won a Super Bowl and the Tampa Bay Lightning won a Stanley Cup. The irony is that the Bucs had to win the NFC Title game in Philadelphia before they could go on to the SB that they won. The Lightning beat the Flyers in a tough 7 game series in the Eastern Finals and they went on to win the Stanley Cup. Those 2 were in the same Conference and they met in the Conference Finals. In bases they are not. The result remains the same and for the 3rd time in 5 years, Tampa Bay will use Philadelphia as a steppin' stone to another title!
Rays in 6
GOOD LUCK
