    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, October 21

Five NHL games, some preseason hoops, and a single college football matchup make up the schedule for a low-key Tuesday sports night. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

There's one college football game on the schedule for Tuesday night, but don't get too excited - it's only Ohio at Temple. Those two Mid-American teams are sitting near the bottom of the their conference standings, with both of them posting 2-5 records to date. However, both the Bobcats and the Owls have been moneymakers for their supporters, as they're a combined 9-4 against-the-spread (Ohio is at 4-2 ATS, Temple is 5-2 ATS).

The Owls are coming off a 24-14 loss to Central Michigan, but they still opened as a 5-point home favorite in this contest. The Bobcats beat Kent State 26-19 in their last game. No total was listed at press time; the two teams are a combined 4-9 on the O/U.

    Other Notable Events

The Tampa Bay Lightning will be looking for their first win of the season when they take to the ice in one of five games on the National Hockey League schedule for Tuesday night. The 0-2-3 Bolts were blanked 1-0 by the Minnesota Wild in overtime on Saturday, and they'll try again for a victory when they host the Atlanta Thrashers on Tuesday night

Also on the NHL's Tuesday calendar: Boston at Buffalo, Anaheim at Toronto, Vancouver at Columbus, and Washington at Calgary. The 3-1-1 Capitals fell in overtime to the New Jersey Devils on Saturday night; that snapped their three-game win streak.

    The Rest of the Schedule

Tuesday is a busy night for exhibition basketball, as there are eight games on the slate including Cleveland at Philadelphia, Memphis at Miami, Boston at New York, Indiana at New Orleans, Chicago at Dallas, and Denver at Toronto. As well, it's Phoenix at the Clippers in Los Angeles, and Charlotte at the Lakers at the San Diego Sports Arena.

    News from the Wire

Chiefs quarterback Brodie Croyle suffered a torn MCL on Sunday and will miss the rest of the year . . . . . . Saints running back Reggie Bush could be out of action for weeks after suffering a knee injury as well . . . Clippers guard Baron Davis has a finger injury that might force him to miss the start of the season . . . Jazz guard Deron Williams has a sprained ankle . . . the Padres are set to shop around ace Jake Peavy in the offseason.

    A Peek at the Future

The Rays will have home-field advantage in the World Series thanks to the American League's win in the All-Star Game; they'll play host to Game 1 on Wednesday night, and they opened at around -150 favorites to win the series . . . the Sprint Cup Series heads to Atlanta Motor Speedway this week for Sunday's Pep Boys Auto 500; Jimmie Johnson takes a big 149-point lead on Greg Biffle in the driver standings into that event.

      Six-pack for Tuesday

Six signs you know you're getting oldER (not old, oldER........)

-- You remember when dunking was illegal in college basketball.

-- You remember NHL goalies playing without masks (seriously).

-- You remember when goalposts at NFL games were on goal lines, not in back of end zone.

-- You remember when some baseball players didn't wear batting helmets, much less that protective gear on their elbow.

-- You remember life before ESPN and the Internet, not better days just much, much different days.

-- You remember getting up to change the channel on the TV.

Tuesday's List of 13: Our NFL List of 13........

Teams 1-4 are a ranking; the rest of the NFL is so muddled, we just can't differentiate, since it changes from day-to-day, injury-to-injury so teams 5-13 have impressed us, for various reasons.........

        13) Chargers, Saints-- These teams head to London at 3-4; loser will be in serious trouble, though Denver's sorry showing Monday gives San Diego more of an opening than the Saints have.

        12) Rams-- Jim Haslett for President!!! They've been revived, with a running attack and a defense that forces turnovers. Is it too late to be a contender this season? Maybe, maybe not, but there's always '09.

        11) Jets-- They move right down field to tie game 13-13, then win a coin flip in OT and they run the ball? Wasn't Oakland's defense too tired to rush Favre? Thought Mangini let Raiders off the hook.......

        10) Vikings-- Allowed four special teams TDs in last three games; if they score 41 points on the road, they HAVE to win.

        9) Broncos-- Dismal performance Monday night, coupled with that ice bag on Cutler's right hand, is good news for the Chargers and bad news for anyone that Mike Shanahan is glaring at today.

        8) Browns-- At one point late in third quarter Sunday, Anderson was 4 of 21 passing, on what looked like a pleasant Maryland afternoon. How many games will Browns lose before they go to Brady Quinn? And can someone please tell Kellen Winslow Jr to button it?

        7) Bills-- Owner Ralph Wilson turned 90 last week; you get feeling that Bills might be moving to Toronto when he no longer owns team; their first regular season game at Rogers Centre is in December.

        6) Seahawks-- Its not ending well in Seattle for Mike Holmgren; now that the 49er job is open, will he be a candidate there? Giving him the run of the front office could be a carrot that gets him back to SF.

        5) Dolphins-- Just like Cleveland, how long before Fish dump Chad as starting QB, and throw Michigan rookie Chad Henne into the fray? When Miami faces a rookie QB but Pennington makes critical error of the game, then Dolphins might as well go with a rookie, too.

        4) Packers-- Management has to be pretty happy with how 2008 is going, as they leave the past behind and seamlessly move to a future without Brett Favre. Not easy to do, but so far, so good.

        3) Steelers-- Winner at Heinz Field this week grabs top spot should Titans lose to the Colts Monday night. Hopefully, Steelers used bye week to get Big Ben healthier, and for Tomlin to get better at clock management skills.

        2) Giants-- Schedule gets tougher in second half; Plaxico Burress goes back to Pittsburgh this week. 4:15 game should be interesting. Don't forget, at one point, Giants told Big Ben they were drafting him, and not trading for Eli Manning.

        1) Titans-- There are thirty teams in the NFL; after seven weeks, one of the 30 is unbeaten, which makes this choice pretty easy, even for a graduate of a public high school and state university like myself.

          This Day in MLB

          MLB

          Tuesday, October 21

          --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
          This day in Baseball….
          --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On October 21 in Baseball History...

          * 1964 – After just 11 years in Milwaukee, the Braves Board of Directors votes to ask the NL for permission to move to Atlanta. Milwaukee County officials sue to block the move.

          * 1972 - The Reds send the World Series to its seventh game with an 8-1 victory in Game Six, the only one of the Series decided by more than one run. Johnny Bench has a home run and Bobby Tolan and Cesar Geronimo each drive in two.

          * 1973 - Bert Campaneris and Reggie Jackson hit two-run homers in the third inning as the Oakland A's defeated the New York Mets 5-2 in Game 7 of the World Series.

          * 1975 - Carlton Fisk broke up one of the best games in Series history with a homer in the 12th inning to give the Boston Red Sox a 7-6 victory against the Cincinnati Reds, forcing a seventh game.

          * 1976 - The Cincinnati Reds won the World Series in four games with a 7-2 victory over the New York Yankees. Johnny Bench had two home runs for five RBIs. It was the Reds' second straight championship and marked the first time a team had swept the playoffs and World Series.

          * 1980 - The Philadelphia Phillies became World Series champions for the first time in their 98-year history with a 4-1 triumph over the Kansas City Royals in Game 6.

          * 1986 - Len Dykstra's leadoff home run in Game Three helps the Mets' Bob Ojeda beat his old team at Fenway Park 7-1.

          * 1987 - With the help of a three-run home run by Tom Lawless, St. Louis evens the World Series with a 7-2 win.

          * 1993 - The night after Toronto wins a 15-14 slugfest, Philadelphia's Curt Schilling outduels Juan Guzman 2-0 in Game Five to send the Series back to Toronto.

          * 1996 - It's vintage Greg Maddux. The Atlanta hurler holds the Yankees to six hits in eight innings and Fred McGriff drives in three runs in a 4-0 win in Game Two.

          * 1998 - The New York Yankees closed out their historic season with 3-0 victory at San Diego, sweeping the Padres in four games to win their record 24th World Series championship. The Game 4 victory gave the Yankees 125 wins against 50 losses - for a .714 winning percentage, the best in the majors since their Murderers' Row club of 1927. Their AL-record 114 regular-season victories were the most ever for a champion.

              Major League Baseball – Notes

              MLB

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome, strangers! Rays, Phils reach World Series
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Brad Lidge's only blemish this season came in the All-Star game. Turns out that loss means a lot more now.

Because of that one slip-up, Lidge and the Philadelphia Phillies will open the World Series on the road - against the Tampa Bay Rays, the team with the best home record in the majors this year.

Game 1 is Wednesday night at kooky Tropicana Field. And really, who could've imagined this matchup back in March, when Rays rookie Evan Longoria homered off Cole Hamels in spring training?

One of the oldest franchises in baseball against one of the newest, linked by a single thread - a history of failure.

The Phillies, the losingest team in pro sports history, with only one championship to their name. The Rays, sad sacks since joining the majors with Arizona in 1998, with the worst record in baseball last year.

The Rays capped their turnaround by dethroning the Boston Red Sox 3-1 Sunday night in Game 7 of the AL championship series.

And while Fox TV executives might've hoped for something seemingly more attractive - say, Cubs-Red Sox - the likes of former NL MVPs Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard, along with B.J. Upton, Shane Victorino, Chase Utley and ALCS MVP Matt Garza certainly give fans a fresh look.

Oh, another theme coming this October: rest vs. rust. The Phillies will have been off a week by the time they play the opener.

''Obviously, winning is the silver lining. We would have been happy to do it in four,'' Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon said hours before Game 7.

While Maddon was a coach with the 2002 Angels when they won the World Series, this matchup is full of newcomers. Of all the players involved, the only one with a hit in any previous World Series is Phillies backup outfielder So Taguchi.

Friendly rivals, too. While the teams haven't met in the regular season since 2006 and Rays reliever Trever Miller is the lone Series player who's spent time on both sides, the clubs see a lot of each other every spring.

The Phillies have trained in the Tampa Bay town of Clearwater for more than a half-century and maintain a year-round fan base in the area that includes Phils Hall of Famer Robin Roberts.

Maddon grew up in Hazleton, Pa., about 100 miles from Philadelphia, and admits he didn't root for the Phillies as a kid. Over the past few years, he's become more of a fan.

''Just seeing them in spring training, my impression of them was that they were more like an American League lineup. I thought their offense, they could pound the ball up and down the lineup. I was really impressed with that,'' Maddon said recently.

''I've always been a big fan of their MVP guys, but I liked Victorino also. He made a big impression on me in spring training,'' he said. ''The thing I didn't know about them is how good their pitching was.''

Tampa Bay dropped the ''Devil'' from its nickname this year and played like a different team, led by a rotation of James Shields, Scott Kazmir, Andy Sonnanstine and Garza.

The Rays went 97-65 to win the AL East, breezed past the Chicago White Sox in their first playoff series and held off Boston. Quite a feat for a team that had never won more than 70 games, and had finished last in every season except one, before this remarkable run.

Upton has hit seven home runs this postseason - after hitting only nine all year - and Longoria has homered six times in the playoffs.

That home run Longoria hit in March off Hamels, the NLCS MVP, seems like a long time ago. The Tampa Bay third baseman delivered a much more key hit in July - his eighth-inning double tied the All-Star game, and Kazmir outpitched Lidge in the 15th for a 4-3 win, giving the AL home-field advantage in the Series.

Lidge is 46-for-46 in save chances without a loss this year. That defeat in the All-Star game looms larger now, because the Rays play so well at home. Somehow, they figured out how to play the crazy caroms off the catwalks - some of those balls remain in play. Still, the Trop Shop remains a good candidate for baseball's first postseason replay.

After starting out the season as 200-1 long shots to win the World Series, the Rays have a chance to become the first club to go from worst in the majors to champs in a single year.

Funny thing, the Phils are one team the Rays have handled through the years - Tampa Bay is 10-5 against them overall.

To keep winning, Tampa Bay will have to tame manager Charlie Manuel's well-balanced bunch. Behind Howard, the Phillies led the NL with 214 home runs. Hamels, Brett Myers, 45-year-old Jamie Moyer and midseason addition Joe Blanton anchor the rotation.

Philadelphia went 92-70 to win the NL East, then bopped past Milwaukee and the Los Angeles Dodgers to reach its first World Series since 1993. Next up, a chance to add to the title the Phils won in 1980 with Mike Schmidt and Steve Carlton at Veterans Stadium.

It's a city aching for a title - the last one that a major Philly team won came in 1983 by the 76ers.

Citizens Bank Park will host the World Series for the first time a week from Saturday with Game 3, as the Phillies try to reverse a recent run of AL dominance.

The Red Sox swept the World Series in 2004, the White Sox swept the next season and the Red Sox did it last year. St. Louis interrupted the string by defeating Detroit in five games in 2006.

                          Tuesday, October 21

                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                          Ice Picks: NHL Bets
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atlanta at Tampa Bay (-130, 5.5)

The Lightning have new owners, a new coach, and a boatload of new players still trying to get to know each other. And you wonder why they’ve started the year 0-2-3. The truth is, as much as the Florida media wants to make this team out to be an exciting group of new talent, headlined by No. 1 overall pick Steven Stamkos, the Lightning are dealing with a bunch of issues.

Offseason acquisitions Mark Recchi and Gary Roberts have seen better days, while Adam Hall and Chris Gratton don’t offer a whole lot to be excited about, either. Plus, Radim Vrbata (who scored 27 goals last year for Phoenix last year) has already spent a game watching from the press box, while ownership and Barry Melrose squabble about Stamkos’ ice time. Not a good situation.

It will get better - at least marginally - for Tampa eventually, but this club has a lot of kinks to work out and questions to answer first.

                          Pick: Atlanta (+120)

                          Anaheim at Toronto (-125, 5.5)

It’s so easy to dump on the Leafs, but Toronto fans will be treated with something they haven’t seen in ages this year: a team that actually puts out an honest day’s work.

Toronto will have to live with youthful mistakes after dumping so many veterans in the offseason, but Ron Wilson is a good fit behind the bench and this team plays hard for him. Goals will be tough to come by with Nik Antropov and Jason Blake leading the offense, though they should be in a lot games if they commit to defense first andstay out of the penalty box.

The Leafs catch the Ducks still sleepwalking out of the gate in this spot, so it might end up a lot closer than you’d think.

                          Pick: under
