Patriots placed RB Laurence Maroney (shoulder) on injured reserve, ending his season.
That came out of nowhere and helps explain Maroney's terrible season, as the shoulder was clearly a huge issue and the Patriots could no longer wait for him. Maroney ends his third season with a 3.3 YPC average and no touchdowns or catches. The 2006 first-round pick ran without confidence and hasn't improved since a promising rookie year. He lacks versatility and looks likely to be a role player in a committee rather than a true franchise back. He's signed cheaply through 2010 and will be back with the Pats next season.
