New Jersey Devils at Washington Capitals

The Devils blanked the Thrashers 1-0 on Thursday but it wasn’t all good news for New Jersey after the game. Forward Brian Rolston, who scored the game’s lone goal, left early because of an ankle sprain. Team officials don’t expect Rolston to play during the Devils next four road games.

The Caps, meanwhile, are fresh of a come-from-behind victory over the Penguins. Washington erased a three-goal deficit without star winger Alexander Olevchkin lighting the lamp.

“I don’t know if it’s a statement game, per se, but I think it’s the identity of our team – no matter what happens, we don’t quit,” Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau told the Washington Post after the game. “In four games we have been down early and we have to find a way to get out of that habit. But it’s awful nice to believe you can come back.”

Expect the Caps to fall behind early again, only this time Martin Brodeur prevents any type of comeback.

            Pick: Devils +114

Chicago Blackhawks at St. Louis Blues

Hawks general manager Dale Tallon didn’t wait to long to send a message to his players.

The axe fell on coach Denis Savard after just four games this season – even worse immediately following the team’s first win of the season.

Taking over behind the bench is former Avs and Blues head coach Joel Quennville.

“His teams are 155 games above .500,” Tallon told the Chicago Tribune. “Nine of the last [11] seasons, he has been in the playoffs.”

The news is much more positive coming out of Missouri. The Blues have won three of four games and are getting offensive contributions from veteran forwards Keith Tkachuk (five goals) and Paul Kariya (one goal and seven assists).

Quennville won’t get his first win as the Blackhawks coach Saturday against a hot Blues’ team.

            Pick: Blues -118

Hard to use stats for Game 6 of ALCS, after Rays imploded Thursday and blew chance to put this series away. Shields needs to keep Boston off board early, for sure. Red Sox lost last five Beckett starts, with three extra inning losses (0-1, 5.56)- he is rumored to have an oblique injury. He is 2-1, 4.73 in six starts vs Rays this year. Shields is 2-1, 3.38 in his last four starts; Rays are 2-3 in his last five home starts, after winning his previous nine starts at the Trop.
