    Daily Sports Roundup

    Friday, October 17

Ranked Boise State returns to the gridiron on Friday night, while the National Hockey League gears up for the weekend. Here's a peek at it all in your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

No. 15 Boise State will be looking to keep their perfect record intact on Friday night when they play host to Hawaii in a Western Athletic matchup. The Broncos are 5-0 (3-1 ATS) on the season, and they're coming off an easy 24-7 win over Southern Miss. The 3-3 (1-3-1 ATS) Warriors beat Louisiana Tech 24-14 last time out, and they knocked off then-No. 22 Fresno State back on October 4. The oddsmakers have pegged Boise State as big 24.5-point home favorites in this contest, with the total sitting at 52.5 points.

    Other Notable Events

There are seven games on the ice on Friday night, including 2-1-0 Phoenix at 1-1-1 Ottawa. The Coyotes beat the Blue Jackets and Ducks to start the season before falling to the Blackhawks on Wednesday. The Sens went 1-0-1 against the Pens in Sweden before returning home and losing to Detroit last Saturday. Puck drop is at 7:00pm ET.

The rest of the league's Friday slate: Toronto at the Rangers, Nashville at Columbus, Edmonton at Calgary, Vancouver at Buffalo, Carolina at Los Angeles, and San Jose at Anaheim. The Ducks are looking for their first win of the season; they sit at just 0-4-0.

    The Rest of the Schedule

There's one game in the Canadian Football League on Friday night, with Edmonton getting a visit from British Columbia. The 9-6 (8-5-2 ATS) Eskimos knocked off the 9-6 (6-8-1 ATS) Lions 27-20 on the road last time out. For Friday's meeting the Eskimos have been pegged as 4-point home favorites, with the total for the game at 56 points.

    News from the Wire

The Blackhawks fired head coach Denis Savard on Thursday afternoon; he'll be replaced behind the team's bench by veteran coach Joel Quenneville . . . Suns guard Steve Nash suffered a sprained ankle on Wednesday night, and he'll miss the team's preseason game against the Nuggets on Friday . . . Lions quarterback Jon Kitna was placed on injured reserve this week, which now makes Dan Orlovsky the team's starter.

    A Peek at the Future

Top-ranked Texas is pegged as a 5.5-point home favorite against No. 11 Missouri on Saturday night. Other lines for Top-5 teams on Saturday: Mississippi at No. 2 Alabama (-13), Michigan at No. 3 Penn State (-23.5), and No. 16 Kansas at No. 4 Oklahoma (-20.5). No. 5 Florida is off this week . . . the Bucs are 10.5-point favorites against the Seahawks on Sunday night, while it's currently the Pats -3 vs. the Broncos on Monday.

      Six-pack for Friday

-- Rays led 7-0 in 7th inning, lost 8-7 in Boston Thursday, as pen faltered and Red Sox stayed alive. Second-best playoff comeback.

-- Don't look now, but Florida State is 5-1 and not looking too bad in the ACC. Fact is, Jimbo Fisher is already calling most of shots as he prepares to take over for Bobby Bowden someday. Bowden still does the media stuff, but he mostly observes during the game.

-- NHL's Blackhawks fired coach Denis Savard after four games, in which he went 1-2-1; unless he showed up drunk or fooled around with the owner's wife, how do you get fired after four games?

-- FOX moved back starting time of Game 6 of the World Series a half-hour so that they can run a half-hour commercial for Barack Obama, further proof of just how much they care about the fans.

-- Sarah Palin will be on Saturday Night Live this week, before she has even held a press conference. Good thing she isn't running for an important government position. Foreigners must think we're a bunch of jackasses, and they might be right.

-- Maybe its the stock market's fault: biggest-ever comeback in a postseason game was an A's-Cub game back in October of 1929.

Friday's List of 13: Our college football List of 13..........

Remember, this is not a ranking, just teams that made an impression over the last week or so..........

        13) Clemson-- This ain't the NFL, people. Firing coaches during the season is distasteful and unproductive, especially when the coach is over .500 in conference play during his tenure.

        12) Houston-- Trailed UAB 20-3 at half last Thursday, won 45-20 in one of the better turnarounds this season. UAB isn't good, but a rally from 17 down at half is still impressive.

        11) Florida State-- 5-1 after win in Raleigh last night; Ponder looks to be pretty good, and defense survived rough start vs Wolfpack, as the Seminoles helped Chuck Amato beat his former employers.

        10) Tennessee-- They had one yard rushing last week, after beating Northern Illinois 13-9 at home the week before. Vols have total of 28 first downs in their last three games. Natives are very restless.

        9) Oregon-- I know its the 4th-string QB, but 5-19/42 passing stats will come back to haunt the Ducks down the road; QB injuries will someday force teams to get away from the spread offense.

        8) Auburn-- Outgained 416-193 at home by Arkansas, somehow lost by just three points, in same week they fired Franklin, the offensive coordinator. Who decided coaches get a half-season to produce, or lose their job? I'm glad my job doesn't depend on 20-year olds doing exactly what they're supposed to, at all times.

        7) New Mexico State- Won as 19-point dogs in Reno, as Hal Mumme starts to make progress in Las Cruces, winning three of last four tilts. He has winnable game at home vs improved San Jose State this week.

        6) Minnesota-- Already bowl eligible, after being 1-11 last year; too bad the stupid Big 11 Channel has lot of their games; might be fun to see the ol' Gophers play. Having less games on ESPN can't help the recruiting in the league, can it?

        5) Oklahoma State-- Big win at Missouri, with 187 rushing yards, 215 passing, and Coach Gundy got through an interview with Erin Andrews without yelling and telling her how old he is. Next up for the Cowboys is a trap game with Baylor.

        4) Miami-- Held Central Florida to 78 yards on 64 plays (they had 65 yards in penalties), but because of defensive TD and kick return for TD, they only beat the Knights 20-14. Still not sure what gives with these Hurricanes, but they are at least somewhat improved.

        3) TCU-- Crushed BYU last night; I wouldn't want to be the team that draws the Horned Frogs in a bowl; they're fast on defense, have a capable QB and are a hungry club with chip on their shoulders. 32-7 over BYU is a damned good night's work.

        2) Penn State-- Winning 48-7 in Madison is impressive, especially in light of their scoring three points in each of last two visits there. Can you remember last time Michigan was a 23-point underdog?

        1) Texas- How about some love for Mack Brown? All the guy does is win, he seems like a pleasant human, but you never hear his name as one of the country's best coaches? What does he have to do, go to the NFL for 10 minutes, cash a few checks, then come running back?

          This Day in MLB

          MLB

          Friday, October 17

          --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
          This day in Baseball….
          --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On October 17 in Baseball History...

          * 1911 - The Philadelphia Athletics scored twice in the 11th inning to beat the New York Giants, 3-2, in Game 3 of the World Series. Frank Baker hit a home run in the ninth inning off Christy Mathewson to tie the score, 1-1. Baker was tagged with the nickname "Home Run" for his exploits.

          * 1960 - The National League formally awarded franchises to the New York Metropolitan Baseball Club, Inc., headed by Joan Payson, and a Houston group headed by Judge Roy Hofheinz, Craig Cullinan, and R.E. Smith.

          * 1976 - On a cold Sunday night, the Reds gang up on Catfish Hunter for three runs, but the Yankees battle back to tie it up. With two outs in the ninth inning, Yanks shortstop Fred Stanley throws Griffey's easy grounder into the dugout. A walk and a Tony Perez single follow and the Yanks lose the second World Series game 4-3.

          * 1978 - The Yanks win their fourth straight game, 7-2, to clinch their second consecutive World Championship over the Dodgers. Brian Doyle and Series MVP Bucky Dent have three hits apiece.

          * 1979 - Willie Stargell's two-run homer gave the Pirates a 4-1 triumph over the Baltimore Orioles and the World Series in seven games.

          * 1982 - Robin Yount records his second four-hit game of the World Series to lead the Brewers to a 6-4 win in Game Five and give Milwaukee a 3-2 lead overall. Yount is the first player ever to have multiple four-hit games in one World Series.

          * 1987 - The Minnesota Twins overpowered St. Louis, 10-1, in the opening game of the first indoor World Series. Dan Gladden's grand slam capped a seven-run fourth inning.

          * 1989 - Minutes before Game 3 of the World Series between Oakland and San Francisco, an earthquake hit the Bay area. The game was postponed and the Series resumed 11 days later.

          * 1990 - In the first extra-inning World Series game since 1986, the underdog Reds beat the A's 5-4 in ten innings to take a surprising 2-0 lead in the Series. Reds outfielder Billy Hatcher goes 4-for-4 to run his consecutive hit streak to seven, tying Thurman Munson's World Series record.

          * 1991 - Brian Hunter's two-run home run in the first inning of Game Seven is all John Smoltz needs as he tosses a 4-0 shutout over Pittsburgh.

          * 1992 - Tom Glavine goes the distance to give the Braves a 3-1 win over the Blue Jays in Game One of the World Series.

          * 1993 - A five-run uprising in the third pushes the Phillies to a 6-4 win over Toronto in Game Two. Mitch Williams earns his only save of the Series.

          * 1995 - The Cleveland Indians beat the Seattle Mariners, 4-0, in Game 6 of the American League championship series, winning their first pennant since 1954.

          * 1996 - The Atlanta Braves had the biggest blowout in postseason history, beating St. Louis, 15-0, in Game 7 of the NL championship series to complete a comeback from a 3-1 deficit. The Cardinals became the only club to blow a 3-1 edge three times in the postseason.

Ice picks: Friday's best NHL bets
                --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Edmonton at Calgary (-136)

Edmonton is coming off back-to-back 3-2 wins over the Avs and Ducks. Right now everything is going Edmonton's way. Garon has a very nice .941 save percentage and the club hasn't allowed a power play goal yet, while getting two scores on the man advantage at the other end. The only glitch seems to be in the face-off circle; losing Marty Reasoner and Jarett Stoll has hurt a bit more than I thought it would.

The Flames have sputtered out of the gate again this year, with much of the blame landing on Miikka Kiprusoff, who has a goals against average that's hovering around five goals and a save percentage under .850. Even with goaltending problems in Calgary I see a huge effort being put in the battle tonight. These teams squared off eight times last year with the under cashing in six times.

                Pick: under

                Vancouver at Buffalo (-149)

Buffalo is a perfect 3-0 to start the year while averaging four goals a game, which is a big surprise considering the Sabres are missing two important guys in Jochen Hecht and Tim Connolly.

The Sabres catch Vancouver on its fourth game of a six-game road trip, and just a day after playing the Detroit Red Wings. Buffalo is just playing too strong right now to pass them up.

                Pick: Buffalo
