Ice picks: Thursday's best NHL bets
      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Washington vs. Pittsburgh (-135, 5.5)

These are the games the hockey world circles on the calendar before the season starts.

It’s the Caps versus the Pens. Ovechkin vs. Crosby. The NHL’s two biggest stars colliding in what most hope will be an offensive explosion.

Expect Sidney Crosby’s Pens to have defense on the mind when the Caps come to town for the first meeting of the year, though.

Pittsburgh was put through a grueling practice of skating on Monday following a dreadful defensive effort against New Jersey on Saturday in which Pittsburgh gave up 49 shots. The Pens only lost that one 2-1 in overtime thanks to some great goaltending by Marc-Andre Fleury, but head coach Michel Therrien posted his team’s individual turnovers in the locker room before practice Monday just to drive home his point.

Point taken. The Pens allowed a more respectable 30 shots on Monday in a 3-2 win over the Flyers.

      Pick: under

      Vancouver vs. Detroit (-190, 5.5)

The Red Wings host Vancouver in a tough spot Thursday night.

Vancouver is coming off a horrible effort in a 5-1 loss in Washington on Monday that was preceded by a pair of big wins over western rival Calgary to open the season. Afterward, coach Alain Vigneault admitted his team wasn’t mentally prepared and he addressed that in a team meeting on Tuesday.

The Canucks should be more prepared for Thursday’s game in Motown and they’re hoping they’ll catch a Detroit squad in a soft spot. The Wings play their first game since making their Stanley Cup champions visit to the White House on Tuesday where they were yucking it up with President George W.

Detroit won both meetings at home against Vancouver last season, but the most recent one was a 3-2 shootout.

      Pick: Vancouver +1.5 goals
