Ice picks: Wednesday's best NHL bets
        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Rangers at Buffalo Sabres

A matchup of unbeaten teams hits the ice tonight at Madison Square Garden. Buffalo comes in sporting a 2-0 record, recording wins over the Habs and Isles. The Rangers are off to their best start since 1983 at 5-0.

Buffalo is coming off a 7-1 victory over the Isles in a fight-filled game where the Sabres showed their grit. Buffalo also beat the Habs in a shootout Friday night, which bodes well for a team that missed the playoffs last year.

As an added bonus, Patrick Lalime looked sharp in nets after allowing just one goal on 24 shots against the Isles. Maybe Buffalo has someone that can give regular starter Ryan Miller more nights off so he is not worn down in March.

The Rangers learned the recent tragic news about their top prospect, Alexei Cherepanov, passing away after collapsing on the bench during a game in Russia. They didn’t miss a beat and took care of the Devils 4-1 on Monday.

Henrik Lundqvist is 4-0 in goal this year with a goals against average of 1.25 and a save percentage of .949. The Rangers haven’t allowed a goal on the penalty kill yet. Last year the Rangers won the season series 4-0 with the over/under going 2-2.

        Pick: Rangers -145

        Boston Bruins at Montreal Canadiens

Two of the Original Six meet tonight in Montreal.

Boston came out of nowhere to take the Habs to a seventh game in the playoffs last year despite entering the series as huge underdogs.

Boston really didn’t do anything in the offseason, besides adding Michael Ryder. They have a good young team that played over their heads against the Habs in the playoffs.

Don’t expect the same on Wednesday. Montreal is the real deal.

Boston has split its games this year by losing to Minny and beating the Avs. The disturbing thing is that the Bs have given up eight goals in two games. The Habs can score at will and have 11 goals in their last two games.

Montreal has gotten at least one point in all three games this year. They took Buffalo to a shootout and ramped up the scoring against the Leafs and Philly.

        Pick: Montreal -165
