    Daily Sports Roundup

    Monday, October 13

The Giants and Browns will play in Cleveland on Monday Night Football, and there's both ALCS and NLCS games on the schedule too. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

The Browns were supposed to compete for the AFC North division title this season, but after four games they're just 1-3 (and 2-2 against-the-spread). Cleveland, though, is at least coming off their first victory of the season - a 20-12 road win over the Bengals. The Browns' first three matchups were losses to the Cowboys, Steelers, and Ravens.

The Giants, on the other hand, are a perfect 4-0 (and 3-1 against-the-spread) on the season. New York completely crushed the Seahawks last time out, going up 27-6 by halftime and cruising to a 44-6 victory. Eli Manning went 19-of-25 for 267 yards passing in that game, with two TD strikes, while Brandon Jacobs ran for 136 yards and two TDs.

The oddsmakers opened the Giants as 7-point road favorites in this contest, but that line has increased to 9 points since the start of the week. The total is pegged at 43.5.

    Other Notable Events

The Rays/Red Sox series will shift to Boston for Game 3 on Monday, with the set tied at one win apiece. Boston will send Jon Lester to the mound on Monday; the lefthander has given up just one unearned on 10 hits over 14 innings so far during the postseason. Tampa Bay will counter with Matt Garza; the righthander has had just one playoff start so far in 2008, getting roughed up for five earned runs on seven hits over six innings.

The Phillies and Dodgers will stage Game 4 of the NLCS on Monday. Derek Lowe will get the ball for Los Angeles in that contest; the righthander took the loss in Game 1 of the NLCS, giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits over 5 1-3 innings of work. Countering for Philadelphia will be Joe Blanton; the righthander pitched against the Brewers in the NLDS, allowing just one earned run on five hits over six innings pitched.

    The Rest of the Schedule

The NHL has seven games on its schedule for Monday, including a pair of matinees: St. Louis plays in Toronto at 1:00pm ET, and the Islanders host Buffalo at 2:00pm ET. The other five games are all at night, and include New Jersey at the Rangers, Vancouver at Washington, Detroit at Carolina, and Nashville at Chicago. Also, the Flyers will be looking to shake off an opening-night defeat on Monday when they take on Montreal.

As well, there are three Canadian Football League on the schedule for Monday. Hamilton and Montreal get things started at 1:00pm ET; the Alouettes are 12-point home favorites, but the Tiger-Cats upset the Als 44-38 last week. In the 4:30pm ET game it's Saskatchewan at Calgary (-5.5). That contest is also a re-match from last week - the Roughriders pulled out a 37-34 win over the Stampeders in that first game.

    News from the Wire

LB Antonio Pierce is listed as QUESTIONABLE for the Giants on Monday night, while each of WR Domenik Hixon, DE Jerome McDougle, and T Kareem McKenzie are PROBABLE . . . S Sean Jones, T Kevin Shaffer, DE Shaun Smith, G Ryan Tucker are all QUESTIONABLE for the Browns. Listed as PROBABLE are S Mike Adams, DT Shaun Rogers, WR Donte' Stallworth, and RB Jason Wright. TE Kellen Winslow was pegged as QUESTIONABLE for Monday night on the team's official injury list, but reports out of Cleveland suggest that he won't be in uniform when kickoff rolls around.

    A Peek at the Future

Game 4 of the ALCS is set for Tuesday night in Boston, while Game 5 of the NLCS is on the schedule for Wednesday night in Los Angeles . . . early college football action this week includes Florida State at North Carolina State and BYU at TCU on Thursday night, and Hawaii at Boise State on Friday night . . . the Sprint Cup Series will return to the track on Sunday afternoon with the TUMS QuikPak 500 at Martinsville Speedway.

      Six-pack for Monday

Some notes from my trip to Brown-Holy Cross game Saturday....

-- Friend of mine is an assistant coach at Brown, so my friend Carl and I made road trip Saturday; a crowd of 7,493 at Fitton Field on Holy Cross campus (seats 23,000+) saw Holy Cross win, 41-34 on an absolutely perfect October day, weather-wise.

-- When you pull in parking lot/tailgating area, they ask you which team you're rooting for, then you park in same area as like-minded fans. With these two schools, both expensive private schools, lot of pre-game chatter about stock market's problems and stuff like that. Much older crowd than you'd think; more alumni than students.

-- Wide open football, for sure; both sides went mostly no-huddle with four WRs; there were 114 passes thrown, total of one sack. A fan of smashmouth football wouldn't have liked this game.
Final stats for the two QB's..........
Dougherty, Brown-- 41 of 60, 526 yards, four TD passes.
Randolph, Holy Cross-- 41 of 54, 430 yards, also four TD tosses.

-- Kid named Sewall on Brown made one of the greatest catches I've seen, stretching out to grab pass on an out pattern, and holding on to the ball as a defensive back drilled him-- tremendous catch.

-- Holy Cross' marching band has 14 members. Fourteen.

-- These kids aren't on scholarship-- they play because they love to play, and thats the right reason. This game was fun to watch, it had skilled players in it, just not the kind of athletes you on TV games. So what?? I'm guessing they're a lot of fun to coach, too.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up another NFL Sunday..........

Happy Thanksgiving Day to our Canadian friends........

        13) You could argue that yesterday was the most exciting Sunday in NFL history, as five of the 13 games were decided in the last :09 or in OT. FOX researchers said it was the first time that had happened.

        12) Atlanta's Matt Ryan is just second rookie QB in last 40 years to be winning QB in four of his first six NFL games (Ferguson, Buffalo).

        11) Chargers are going to fly 15,771 miles just in October, as they have a game in London against the Saints coming up. Next game in Superdome for the Saints is the Monday before Thanksgiving.

        10) Redskins were first team ever not to have a turnover in their first five games of season; Rams recovered three Redskin fumbles Sunday as Haslett Era began with shaky but satisfying 19-17 win.

        9) Carolina lost for first time in their last six visits to Tampa, as the Bucs blocked a punt for an early TD and routed the Panthers, 27-3.

        8) Speaking of special teams, Arizona started their game vs Dallas by running kick back for TD; they ended game by blocking punt for TD in OT (first time that ever happened), so special teams need to get a lot of love here. Special teams coach (why didn't FOX ever show this guy?) Kevin Spencer-- take a bow. You're our Coach of the Week.

        7) Cardinals' coach Ken Whisenhunt gave lot of fans in the front row a victory high-5 as he left the field Sunday-- big win for his program, behind gutty two-time MVP Kurt Warner.

        6) Schaub was 22-42/371 passing (Andre Johnson made a superior catch on game-winning drive) and ran for winning score in last 0:10 as Texans got their first win of season, beating Miami 29-28. Miami is lot better than they have been in recent years, though.

        5) JaMarcus Russell was 13-35 passing in his return to Louisiana; Raiders allowed Saints to average 10.3 yds/pass attempt in 34-3 win for New Orleans team that was playing on short week after losing a emotional, bizarre game to the Vikings six days earlier.

        4) Brett Favre is two years older than Eric Mangini; Jets by the way, have to dump the throwback uniforms-- wear your real uniforms, or make the throwbacks your real uniforms.

        3) 49ers trailed Philly 17-9, but on last play of half, they blocked an Eagle FG attempt and ran it back for TD; eventually, Niners grabbed a 26-17 lead , then stood around, watched Eagles score last 23 points of the game. Rumors have Mike Nolan not being long for 49er job.

        2) Falcons are just third team in last 40 years to give up a go-ahead score in last 0:15 of an NFL game, and still win that game. Kudos to the home timekeeper, who helped Atlanta just enough to ensure the Falcons would have a shot at the game-winning kick.

        1) Interesting to see if future New England opponents will attack the Patriot defense the way San Diego (11.3 yds/pass attempt) did, but Chargers have more tall receivers than most teams, and more talent.

                Hamilton Tiger-Cats (3-11) at Montreal Alouettes (9-5) (Montreal -12.5)

The Tiger-Cats stunned the Montreal Alouettes last week at Ivor Wynne Stadium but it would be surprising to see them create another upset on Canadian Thanksgiving.

That said, the Als should not - and most likely won’t - take the Ti-Cats lightly. Offensive player of the week Quinton Porter did go 27 for 32 for 429 yards with five touchdowns to lead them to victory on Sunday. Incredibly, Anthony Calvillo, completed 44 of the 53 passes he attempted for 472 yards and four touchdowns in that loss.

Montreal coach Marc Trestman warned everyone last week, this Hamilton team has a stout defense that, despite a losing record, now stands third in interceptions with 16, the best in that category in the East Division.

Seven of these interceptions are credited to Chris Thompson, a native of New Orleans. Only B.C.’s Barron Miles, with eight, has more interceptions in the CFL.

The Tiger-Cats are coming into Montreal with playoff hopes but we wouldn’t bet on them sweeping this home-and-away series.

                Pick: Montreal

Saskatchewan Roughriders (9-5) at Calgary Stampeders (9-5) (Calgary -6.5)

Calgary and the Riders are meeting for the third time this season. The Stampeders won the first contest last July in Regina but lost 37-34 last weekend.

Michael Bishop completed 20 of the 27 passes he attempted for 242 yards with a touchdown while Neal Hughes ran for two more scores. Henry Burris led the Stampeders offense with 29 passes completed out of 45 attempts and 311 yards gained through the air with a pair of touchdowns.

The struggling Roughriders will welcome running back Wes Cates back to the lineup and he will definitely be a factor. We doubt it will be enough against the powerful Stampeders, though.

                Pick: Calgary

Rays: Matt Garza closed the regular season in a slump and things didn’t get much better for him in his playoff start against the White Sox. In Chicago’s only win of the series, Garza allowed five runs in just six innings of work. Garza has struggled on the road this season, going 4-6 with a 4.53 ERA. He has had success against Boston, however, compiling a record of 3-1 in six career starts versus the Red Sox.

                        This day in Baseball….
                        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On October 13 in Baseball History...

                        * 1903 - The Boston Pilgrims won the first World Series, five games to three, with a 3-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

                        * 1914 - The Boston Braves completed a sweep of the Philadelphia Athletics, first in World Series history, with a 3-1 victory.

                        * 1915 - The Phillies get four runs early off Red Sox hurler Rube Foster in Game Five. The Red Sox break a tie in the ninth inning for the third time in the World Series, as reliever Eppa Rixey gives up Harry Hooper's second home run of the game and Boston wins 5-4 to take the Series in five.

                        * 1921 - Art Nehf tossed a 1-0, four-hitter against the New York Yankees for the World Series title in eight games. The Giants scored their run in the first inning on an error by shortstop Roger Peckinpaugh.

                        * 1960 - Bill Mazeroski opened the bottom of the ninth with a home run off Ralph Terry of the Yankees to give the Pittsburgh Pirates a 10-9 victory and the World Series in seven games.

                        * 1965 - Jim "Mudcat" Grant does it all himself, hitting a three-run home run and pitching a 5-1 win at Minnesota to knot the World Series with the Dodgers after six games.

                        * 1970 - The Orioles win their third straight over the Reds, 9-3, with winning pitcher Dave McNally slugging a grand slam. Frank Robinson and Don Buford also contribute homers and third baseman Brooks Robinson continues his excellence with the glove as he makes two spectacular grabs in the field.

                        * 1971 - The first World Series night game was played in Pittsburgh with the Pirates beating Baltimore 4-3. Roberto Clemente had three hits for Pittsburgh.
                        * 1973 - The Mets hold the A's to four hits in the World Series opener, but three of those hits come in the two-run third inning as the A's win 2-1.

                        * 1974 - Los Angeles, behind Don Sutton, evens the Series with a 3-2 win. The Dodgers score in the second off Vida Blue, and a two-run home run by Joe Ferguson in the sixth provides the winning margin.

                        * 1978 - New York third baseman Graig Nettles put on a fielding clinic and prevented seven runs as the Yankees beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-1 in the third game of the World Series. Nettles made four spectacular stops and gave the Yankees the first victory of the series.

                        * 1979 - Baltimore scores six runs in the eighth inning en route to a 9-6 win, taking a 3-1 Series advantage over the Pirates. Pinch-hit doubles by John Lowenstein and Terry Crowley drive in four runs.

                        * 1984 - A pair of two-run home runs by Alan Trammell provide all Detroit's scoring as Jack Morris beats the Padres 4-2 in Game Four. The Tigers are now just one win away from the title.

                        * 1985 - The Cardinals rout the Dodgers, 12-2, to even the NLCS. The Cards, however, lose rookie sensation Vince Coleman to one of the more bizarre injuries in major-league history. Coleman is stretching before the game when his left leg becomes caught in Busch Stadium's automated tarpaulin as it unrolls across the infield, trapping him for about 30 seconds. He does not play again in 1985.

                        * 1993 - Tommy Greene of Philadelphia outpitched Greg Maddux and the Phillies beat the Atlanta Braves 6-3 to win the National League pennant in six games.

                        * 1995 - Jay Buhner, whose error in right field allowed the Indians to tie the game, hits his second home run of the game in the top of the eleventh inning to lead the Mariners to a 5-2 victory in Game Three of the ALCS. Norm Charlton hurls three hitless innings in relief to give the Mariners a 2-1 series lead.

                        * 1996 - Powered by a three-homer third inning and eight strong innings from Andy Pettitte, New York won its 34th American League pennant with a 6-4 victory over Baltimore. The Yankees took the ALCS 4-1 and went to the World Series for the first time since 1981.

                        * 1998 - The New York Yankees advanced to the World Series for a record 35th time after beating the Cleveland Indians 9-5 to win the AL championship series in six games.
