    Daily Sports Roundup

    Sunday, October 12

The Patriots and Chargers will meet on the gridiron in San Diego on Sunday night to conclude a busy weekend in sports. Here's a look at it all in your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

The Patriots will play their first game of the season as an underdog on Sunday night when they battle the Chargers. The Vegas oddsmakers opened San Diego as 6.5-point home favorites in that contest, a line which has since fallen to as low as 5 points at some books. New England is 2-2 ATS so far this season, while San Diego is 2-2-1 ATS.

The Ravens have managed to cover the spread in three of their four games so far this season, and they're listed as 4-point road underdogs against the Colts on Sunday (that line opened at Indy -7). Peyton Manning and company are just 1-3 ATS on the season.
Other matchups on the schedule for Sunday include Chicago (-2.5) at Atlanta, Detroit at Minnesota (-13), Oakland at New Orleans (-7), Cincinnati at the Jets (-6), Carolina at Tampa Bay (-1.5), St. Louis at Washington (-13.5), Miami at Houston (-3), Jacksonville at Denver (-3.5), Philadelphia (-5) at San Francisco, and Green Bay at Seattle (-2). As well, the Cowboys are pegged as 5-point road favorites in their game against Arizona.

    Other Notable Events

Game 3 of the NLCS will be played in Los Angeles on Sunday night, with the Dodgers down 2-0 in the series. Los Angeles will send Hiroki Kuroda to the mound in that contest, and he'll be looking to duplicate his success from their NLDS against the Cubs. Kuroda tossed 6 1-3 scoreless innings for a victory in that series, giving up just six hits.

The Phillies will look to Jamie Moyer to try and give them a stranglehold on the series. Moyer took a loss in their NLDS against the Brewers, giving up two earned runs on four hits over four innings of work. The lefthander had previously won his last seven outings.

    The Rest of the Schedule

There are three NHL games on the schedule for Sunday, all of them involving Western Conference clubs. Edmonton will host Colorado and Phoenix will visit Anaheim in a pair of 8:00pm ET contests, while San Jose will meet the Kings in Los Angeles at 9:00pm.

As well, the Formula One circuit remains in Asia for Sunday's running of the Japanese Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton has a seven-point lead over second-place Felipe Massa in the drivers championship heading into his event, with Robert Kubica 20 points back in third place in the standings. Hamilton won the Japanese Grand Prix by eight seconds over Heikki Kovalainen last year, while Kimi Raikkonen was nine seconds back in third.

    A Peek at the Future

All four of baseball's postseason teams will be back in action on Monday, with Game 3 of the Rays/Red Sox series and Game 4 of the Dodgers/Phillies series . . . it'll be the 4-0 Giants travelling to Cleveland to take on the 1-3 Browns on Monday Night Football; the perfect Giants are pegged as 8-point road favorites, with the total set at 43 points . . . the CFL will stage two matchups on Monday afternoon for Canadian Thanksgiving, with the Tiger-Cats playing a contest in Montreal, and the Roughriders visiting Calgary.

            Hamilton Tiger-Cats (3-11) at Montreal Alouettes (9-5) (Montreal -12.5)

The Tiger-Cats stunned the Montreal Alouettes last week at Ivor Wynne Stadium but it would be surprising to see them create another upset on Canadian Thanksgiving.

That said, the Als should not - and most likely won’t - take the Ti-Cats lightly. Offensive player of the week Quinton Porter did go 27 for 32 for 429 yards with five touchdowns to lead them to victory on Sunday. Incredibly, Anthony Calvillo, completed 44 of the 53 passes he attempted for 472 yards and four touchdowns in that loss.

Montreal coach Marc Trestman warned everyone last week, this Hamilton team has a stout defense that, despite a losing record, now stands third in interceptions with 16, the best in that category in the East Division.

Seven of these interceptions are credited to Chris Thompson, a native of New Orleans. Only B.C.’s Barron Miles, with eight, has more interceptions in the CFL.

The Tiger-Cats are coming into Montreal with playoff hopes but we wouldn’t bet on them sweeping this home-and-away series.

            Pick: Montreal

Saskatchewan Roughriders (9-5) at Calgary Stampeders (9-5) (Calgary -6.5)

Calgary and the Riders are meeting for the third time this season. The Stampeders won the first contest last July in Regina but lost 37-34 last weekend.

Michael Bishop completed 20 of the 27 passes he attempted for 242 yards with a touchdown while Neal Hughes ran for two more scores. Henry Burris led the Stampeders offense with 29 passes completed out of 45 attempts and 311 yards gained through the air with a pair of touchdowns.

The struggling Roughriders will welcome running back Wes Cates back to the lineup and he will definitely be a factor. We doubt it will be enough against the powerful Stampeders, though.

            Pick: Calgary

              This Day in MLB

              MLB

              Sunday, October 12

              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
              This day in Baseball….
              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On October 12 in Baseball History...

              • 1907 - Three Finger Brown shuts down the Tigers, 2-0, to win the World Series. The Cubs steal four bases for a total of 18 in the five-game series (the Cubs won four games, the other ending in a tie).

              • 1913 - John McGraw hosts a reunion for Hugh Jennings and the old Orioles. After a night of heavy drinking, he blames his longtime friend, business partner, and teammate Wilbert Robinson for too many coaching mistakes in the recently concluded World Series. They exchange insults and McGraw fires him. They won't speak to each other for 17 years. Six days later Robbie will begin a legendary 18-year career as Brooklyn manager.1916 - The Boston Red Sox won the World Series in five games with a 4-1 victory over the Brooklyn Dodgers. Ernie Shore pitched a three-hitter for Boston.

              • 1920 - Cleveland's Stan Coveleski won his third game in the World Series as the Indians beat the Brooklyn Dodgers 3-0 and won the championship, five games to two.

              • 1929 - The Philadelphia Athletics, trailing the Chicago Cubs 8-0 in the fourth game of the World Series, scored 10 runs in the seventh inning to win 10-8.

              • 1963 - In the first (and last) Hispanic-American major league all-star game, the NL team beats the AL 5-2 at the Polo Grounds.

              • 1967 - The Cardinals earn their second World Championship of the decade with a 7-2 victory over Boston. Bob Gibson notches his third World Series win with a three-hitter, 10 strikeouts, and a fifth-inning home run. Lou Brock records seven stolen bases in the Series.

              • 1969 - New York's Jerry Koosman and Ron Taylor combine on a two-hitter in Game Two against Baltimore. Al Weis's ninth-inning single off loser Dave McNally gives the Mets a 2-1 win to even the World Series.

              • 1972 - Oakland takes the AL pennant with a 2-1 win in Game Five of the ALCS over Baltimore. The A's Reggie Jackson steals home, but pulls a hamstring in the process, sidelining him for the World Series.

              • 1974 - Oakland slugging star Reggie Jackson connects for a homer off Andy Messersmith, and pitcher Ken Holtzman scores the second run in the fifth inning on a suicide squeeze. The A's win the World Series opener 3-2 as the Dodgers strand 12 baserunners.
              • 1975 - Down 2-1 in the ninth inning, the Reds rally to beat the Red Sox in Game Two of the World Series 3-2.

              • 1976 - The Reds score seven times in the final three innings to secure a 7-6 win and complete a sweep of the Phillies in the NLCS.

              • 1977 - The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the New York Yankees 6-1 to even the World Series after two games. Catfish Hunter, who had not pitched in over a month, started the game for the Yankees. Ron Cey, Steve Yeager and Reggie Smith all homered and knocked out Hunter in the third inning.

              • 1979 - Kiko Garcia drives in four runs to lead the Orioles to an 8-4 triumph over Pittsburgh in Game Three of the World Series.

              • 1980 - The Phillies capture their first NL title since 1950 with a 10-inning, 8-7 win over the Astros in the fifth and final game of the NLCS. Each of the last four games was decided in extra innings.

              • 1982 - Paul Molitor of Milwaukee had five hits, a World Series record, in the 10-0 opener over the Cardinals in St. Louis. Mike Caldwell tossed the shutout for the Brewers.

              • 1984 - San Diego pitchers tie a World Series record by issuing 11 walks in a 5-2 loss to the Tigers in Game Three. Detroit takes a 2-1 Series lead.

              • 1985 - In Game Four of the ALCS, Al Oliver's two-run pinch double in the ninth inning gives Toronto a 3-1 win over Kansas City and a 3-1 lead in the series. Until this year's best-of-seven format was adopted, the three wins would have sent the Blue Jays to the World Series. The Royals will take advantage of the format change.

              • 1986 - The California Angels were one pitch away from their first pennant when they let the Boston Red Sox back into the American League playoffs with an 11-inning 7-6 victory in Game 5.

              • 1987 - Minnesota beats Detroit 9-5 in Game Five of the ALCS to wrap up its first AL championship since 1965. Twins third baseman Gary Gaetti is named MVP.

              • 1988 - NLCS MVP Orel Hershiser shuts out the Mets to win Game Seven. The 6-0 win puts the Dodgers into the World Series for the first time since 1981.

              • 1990 - Danny Jackson, Norm Charlton, and Randy Myers combine on a one-hitter as Cincinnati beats the Pirates 2-1 to win the NLCS in six games.

              • 1991 - The Blue Jays chase Twins starter Kevin Tapani for the second time in the ALCS, but Minnesota's bullpen and bats lead to six unanswered runs in Game Five as the Twins win their third pennant.

              • 1993 - The Toronto Blue Jays, behind the strong pitching of Dave Stewart, beat the Chicago White Sox 6-3 to win the American League pennant in six games.

              • 1997 - Marlins rookie Livan Hernandez matches Mike Mussina's one-day old LCS record with 15 strikeouts in a three-hit, 2-1 win in Game Five of the NLCS. Hernandez, who would not have started if not for an injury to Alex Fernandez, wins his second game of the series and will earn MVP honors.

Philadelphia Phillies at Los Angeles Dodgers [FOX | 8:22 PM ET]

Phillies: The only game the Phillies dropped in the Divisional Series against Milwaukee was when Jamie Moyer was on the mound. In that game, Moyer lasted only four innings, allowing two runs. Before the playoffs began, Philly was 9-1 in Moyer’s last 10 starts. He hasn’t had a lot of success against the Dodgers though, going 3-4 with a 4.80 in 10 career starts.

Phillies are 21-7 in their last 28 games overall.
The UNDER is 5-1 in Philadelphia's last 6 games overall.

                      Key Injuries - NONE

                            Philadelphia at L.A. Dodgers (-150,8)

Personal tragedy has befallen the Philadelphia Phillies during the NL championship series, but they hope to keep playing winning baseball right through it.

Now Manny Ramirez and the Los Angeles Dodgers look to draw on their home fans for inspiration Sunday night to avoid being pushed to the brink of elimination by the heavy-hearted Phillies.

It appears Philadelphia manager Charlie Manuel and center fielder Shane Victorino will be at Dodger Stadium for Game 3 despite pending funeral arrangements for family members.

Not long before Game 2 on Friday, Manuel learned his 87-year-old mother had died after a brief illness. Rather than leaving to be with his family, Manuel remained with his players and they came through with an inspiring 8-5 victory.

"We really wanted to win today for Charlie," said Phillies closer Brad Lidge, who earned his second straight save despite walking two batters in the ninth inning.

Pitcher Brett Myers had three RBIs and had three hits - one shy of his total during the regular season - to help Philadelphia take a 2-0 lead before heading to Los Angeles.

"He's been so good to us," Myers said of Manuel. "We've got to show him some love, too. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family dealing with this time."

                            Pick: Phillies
