Tuesday, October 7

Better hope there's something good on television on Tuesday, because it's one of the slowest sports nights of the entire year. Here's a look in today's Daily Sports Roundup.

The Gridiron Spotlight

Tuesday night again features a Florida Atlantic contest this week, as the Owls play host to the Troy Trojans in a Sun Belt matchup. Florida Atlantic suffered their third straight defeat last week, giving up a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns in a 14-13 loss to Middle Tennessee. The Owls at least covered the spread on the road in that game, so they're 3-2 ATS on the season despite only picking up the victory in one of their five outings.

The Trojans were thumped 55-24 by Oklahoma State last time out, a week after falling 28-10 to ranked Ohio State. Troy had started the season with back-to-back wins over Middle Tennessee and cupcake Alcorn State. The Trojans were 17.5-point underdogs versus the Cowboys and couldn't cover the spread; they're now 2-1 ATS on the season.

The oddsmakers opened the Trojans as 3.5-point favorites to get the win Tuesday night.

Other Notable Events

Both NLDS finished early, so there's no baseball to be found on the Tuesday schedule.

The Rest of the Schedule

There aren't even NHL exhibition games Tuesday; real games begin on Thursday night.

News from the Wire

Bills quarterback Trent Edwards suffered a concussion in the team's loss to the Cardinals on Sunday . . . Buccaneers quarterback Brian Griese was also forced out of action on Sunday; he suffered a bruised elbow . . . Penguins forward Petr Sykora missed both of the team's games in Stockholm over the weekend because of a groin injury . . . Senators forward Mike Fisher missed the contests as well with a sore groin.

A Peek at the Future

A peek at the future for Cubs fans might include another 100 years of misery, but Dodgers and Phillies fans get to see their clubs battle for the National League pennant starting on Thursday; subsequent games are on Friday, Sunday, and Monday . . . there are only four college football games on the schedule prior to Saturday this week, and only one involves a ranked team - Clemson plays No. 21 Wake Forest on Thursday.

Six-pack for Tuesday

-- Minnesota's new baseball stadium won't have a roof; the World Series starts October 22. Imagine if Twins ever get in the Series some year- the field would have to be Zambonied before the game.

-- Guy caddying in PGA Tour event at Turning Stone Sunday was wearing shorts and a stocking cap. Make up your mind, sir.

-- Strangest college football score of the week was in the ACC, as Virginia (+13) shut Maryland out, 31-0. Surprising score. Terps had won three games in row, Cavaliers had looked lifeless.

-- Not the best of weeks for baseball fans in Chicago.

-- Phillies. Dodgers. Rays, Red Sox all clinched spots in baseball's Final Four-- bad news for TBS-- no five-game series.

-- The Tampa Rays are the '69 Mets all over again; great pitching in a miracle season, erasing a decade of ineptitude.

Tuesday's List of 13: Our NFL List of 13.........

13) Cardinals-- Two-time MVP Kurt Warner plays lot better at home than on road; they knocked Trent Edwards out on third play Sunday. The NFC West is theirs to lose.

12) Dolphins-- Parcells has paid immediate dividends, as imaginative offense makes up for Pennington's lack of arm strength. Wins in last two games over Patriots, Chargers-- very impressive.

11) Buccaneers-- If Jon Gruden is such a QB guru, why can't he ever decide on a quarterback? But they did almost win in Denver, after a win at Chicago- they're pretty good.

10) Broncos-- One of the fun teams to watch- they actually played a little defense Sunday. Loss at Arrrowhead still raises questions.

9) Bills-- They're 4-1, but trailed Rams in fourth quarter, trailed most of game vs Raiders, now Edwards is goofy and JP Losman won't be the answer. Somehow, I don't think Belichick is worried.

8) Saints-- Can we book the Saints for a Monday night home game every year? Monday night's game was first one in NFL history with a blocked FG for TD, two punt return TDs, and two 50+-yard FGs.

7) Steelers-- Ben Roethlisberger is a better version of Roman Gabriel, the 60's Rams' QB who was very tough to bring down. Big Ben will make the short drive to Canton to be inducted someday.

6) Patriots-- Nothing to say about them, so I'll say this: Rams fired Scott Linehan for an 0-4 start; if he ran Lehman Brothers the way he ran the Rams, the poor bastard would have been given a $60M golden parachute. The lesson-- don't let your kids become coaches.

5) Panthers-- Earlier this decade, Giants wanted to fire Jim Fassel and promote John Fox to head coach, but since they had just been in the Super Bowl, it wasn't practical. Now Fassel is said to be a candidate to be Raiders' coach. Whether that is a good thing for him, no idea.

4) Cowboys-- Too many characters. Jerry Jones was on sidelines on Sunday during third quarter, trying to pump his team up. Seems to me that would be the coaches' job.

3) Redskins-- Won on consecutive Sundays at Dallas, Philadelphia, now have trap game against winless Rams this week. If they're going to be serious contender in NFC East, this is must win for them.

2) Titans-- Jeff Fisher actually coached the Houston Oilers, then the Titans when they played in Memphis, and now Nashville. They are unbeaten with 87-year old Kerry Collins at QB. Damn good coach.

1) Giants-- Looks like three playoff teams could come out of east in NFC; how many good running backs did Auburn have, that Jacobs transferred out? Cowboy-Giant games will be way overhyped.

* 1904 - Jack Ches-bro got his 41st victory of the season as New York defeated the Boston Red Sox, 3-2.

* 1919 - Two errors by Swede Risberg and one by Happy Felsch help put Dickie Kerr in a 4-0 hole, but Felsch, Buck Weaver, and Joe Jackson combine for seven hits as the White Sox win 5-4. Kerr wins his second game as the Sox now trail the best-of-nine Series by a 4-2 margin.

* 1925 - Walter Johnson opens the World Series in Pittsburgh. A fifth-inning home run by Pie Traynor is the only damaging blow as Johnson fans 10 for a 4-1 Washington win.

* 1927 - Herb Pennock is handed an 8-0 lead and takes a perfect game into the eighth inning. The Yankees southpaw retires Glenn Wright, but Pie Traynor breaks the spell with a single and Clyde Barnhart doubles him home. Pennock settles for a three-hit 8-1 victory over the Pirates to give the Yankees a commanding 3-0 edge in the World Series.

* 1928 - Lou Gehrig's two home runs led the New York Yankees to a 7-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series, giving them a 3-0 lead.

* 1933 - Flags are at half staff for Game Five to honor William L. Veeck, Chicago Cubs president, who died suddenly. On the field, the World Series comes to a close when Mel Ott homers in the 10th inning for a 4-3 Giants victory over Washington.

* 1945 - Hank Greenberg's three doubles led Detroit to an 8-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs, giving the Tigers a 3-2 lead in the World Series.

* 1950 - Whitey Ford wins his first World Series game, 5-2, over Bob Miller at Yankee Stadium. The sweep of the Phillies gives the Yankees their 13th World Championship.

* 1952 - Billy Martin's running catch on a high infield pop with the bases loaded in the seventh inning snuffed out a Dodgers rally and the New York Yankees went on to win Game 7 of the World Series, 4-2.

* 1958 - The Yanks pull even against the Braves as Hank Bauer hits his fourth home run of the Series and New York wins Game Six in 10 innings, 4-3.

* 1961 - New York's Roger Maris won the third game of the World Series with a ninth-inning home run off the Reds' Bob Purkey. The Yankees won, 3-2, at Cincinnati's Crosley Field.

* 1968 - Mickey Lolich saves Detroit, 5-3, with an unlikely assist from Lou Brock, who tries to score standing up on Julian Javier's single and is gunned down by Willie Horton's throw. Al Kaline's bases-loaded single drives in the deciding runs.

* 1975 - The Red Sox gain a 5-3 win and three-game sweep over Oakland for the AL pennant. Carl Yastrzemski makes two great plays in the outfield and has two hits to back Rick Wise's pitching.

* 1977 - Down 5-3 to the Phillies in Game Three of the NLCS with two outs in the ninth inning, the Dodgers catch lightning in a bottle. Pinch-hitter Vic Davalillo beats out a two-strike drag bunt and pinch hitter Manny Mota follows with a long double. Los Angeles eventually pulls out a 6-5 victory.

* 1978 - The Dodgers win the pennant as Bill Russell's 10th-inning single scores Ron Cey in Game Four. Dusty Baker collects four hits as Los Angeles beats the Phillies, 4-3.

* 1984 - The San Diego Padres won the National League pennant with a 6-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs in the final game of the playoffs. The Padres won three straight after dropping the first two.

* 1987 - Don Baylor singled to break an eighth-inning tie and Gary Gaetti homered in his first two playoff at-bats as the Minnesota Twins beat the Detroit Tigers, 8-5, in the opening game of the ALCS.

* 1995 - Edgar Martinez of the Seattle Mariners hit a tie-breaking grand slam in the eighth inning and drove in seven runs -- the most ever in a postseason game to date -- leading the Mariners past the New York Yankees, 11-8, and sending the AL playoff series to a decisive Game 5.

* 1998 - Chuck Knoblauch argued for an interference call at first base instead of picking up the ball while Enrique Wilson scored to break a 1-1 tie in the 12th inning of the Cleveland Indians' 4-1 victory at New York in Game 2 of the AL championship series.
