      Daily Sports Roundup

      Monday, October 6

The Minnesota Vikings will be looking to pick up a Monday night victory in New Orleans when they head south for a game versus the Saints. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup.

      The Gridiron Spotlight

The Vikings were a dark horse pick to win the NFC North division this season, but through four games they've only been able to grab one victory (and cover the spread just once). Minnesota will be looking to avoid falling farther down the division standings on Monday night when they play their prime time road game down in New Orleans.

The Saints got back into the win column last weekend, knocking off the Niners 31-17. However, New Orleans had entered that contest on a two-game skid and they sit at just 2-2 on the season. Betting on the Saints has been fairly lucrative, though, as they've managed to post an against-the-spread victory in three of their four contests to date.

The last time these two teams met was back on September 25, 2005, when the Vikings cruised to a 33-16 home win. Minnesota had no trouble covering the 4.5-point spread in that contest, while the combined score went OVER the posted total of 44.5 points. For Monday night's game the Saints are 3-point Vegas favorites, and the total is at 46.5.

      Other Notable Events

The White Sox will be looking to tie up their ALDS with the Rays on Monday night when they play host to Game 4 of the series. Chicago will send Gavin Floyd (17-8, 3.84 ERA) to the mound in that contest. Floyd won his last start, giving up just one earned run on five hits over six innings versus the Tigers on September 29. Tampa Bay will counter with Andy Sonnanstine (13-9, 4.38 ERA). Sonnanstine was knocked around by the Tigers in his last outing, and he hasn't picked up a victory since his start on August 18.

The Angels will also be trying to knot their ALDS at 2-2 when they play Game 4 in Boston on Monday night. That contest will feature a rematch between Los Angeles' John Lackey and Boston's Jon Lester, who both pitched in Game 1. Lester won that game after allowing just one unearned run on six hits over his seven innings of work. Lackey surrendered two earned runs on four hits over 6 2-3 innings to take the defeat.

      The Rest of the Schedule

There's nothing else on Monday except an Islanders/Panthers preseason NHL contest.

      News from the Wire

S Madieu Williams is OUT for Minnesota on Monday night, while LB E.J. Henderson is DOUBTFUL, WR Bernard Berrian, TE Jim Kleinsasser, T Drew Radovich, WR Sidney Rice, and CB Benny Sapp are QUESTIONABLE, and both LB Vinny Ciurciu and DE Ray Edwards are PROBABLE . . . WR Marques Colston, DT Sedrick Ellis, CB Aaron Glenn, WR David Patten, and TE Jeremy Shockey are all OUT for the Saints this week. S Chris Reis is DOUBTFUL, and each of TE Mark Campbell, WR Terrance Copper, LB Troy Evans, CB Randall Gay, C Jonathan Goodwin, RB Mike Karney, RB Olaniyi Sobomehin, and RB Aaron Stecker are pegged as PROBABLE to play Monday night.

      A Peek at the Future

The drivers of the Sprint Cup Series head from Talladega Superspeedway to Lowe's Motor Speedway for this Saturday's Bank of America 500. The final five Chase races of the year are then at Martinsville, Atlanta, Texas, Phoenix, and Homestead-Miami . . . the Formula One circuit's season is also winding down for the year; they'll compete in the Japanese Grand Prix this Sunday, then finish up with events in China and Brazil.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a football Sunday

          13) Houston snatched defeat from the jaws of victory Sunday, one of the most horrific, self-inflicted losses in NFL history. Texans had a 27-10 lead over the Colts with 5:00 left, and by time there was 1:50 left, they were losing, thanks to two fumbles by QB Rosenfels, one of which was run back for a Colt touchdown. Just a terrible loss for a winless team that was playing a delayed home opener.

          12) Chiefs had eight first downs, 127 total yards in a 34-0 drubbing in Charlotte by the Panthers. After running ball for 213 yards last week they had 17 carries for 35 yards against the Panthers. Go figure.

          11) Tennessee had an 18-yard advantage in field position, but also 78 penalty yards and just 47 yards on 22 rushes. A very bad roughing the passer penalty kept their game-winning drive though, and Titans remained unbeaten, sneaking out a 13-10 win in Baltimore.

          10) Miami outrushed the Chargers 167-60, upset San Diego 17-10 on a rainy day in south Florida. Dolphins are 2-2 and much improved.

          9) Seattle was truly pathetic Sunday, giving up 342 yards in first half of a 44-7 drubbing in the Jersey Swamp. I mean, Plaxico Burress gets suspended and Seattle still gives up 44 points? Terrible exhibition.

          8) Eagles led 14-0 after Desean Jackson's punt return TD, but that was it, as Redskins stormed from behind and won their second road division game. What a trap game for the Men of Zorn next week, as 14-point home favorites against lowly Rams, in Jim Haslett's debut as interim coach. Redskins were 11-19 on third down at Philly.

          7) How useless are the Lions? They got outgained 425-185 at home by Chicago, and wound up with Orlovsky at QB in yet another bad day at the office for Rod Marinelli.

          6) Oddsmakers were obviously baffled by Matt Cassel, making the Patriots 3-point favorites on Candlestick Point; he threw two INTs, but also passed for 233 yards, while JT O'Sullivan was no match for Belichick's defense. 49ers gained 199 total yards in 30-21 NE win.

          5) Bengals are 0-4, but they lost to Giants in OT and gave Dallas all it wanted Sunday before losing 31-22. They'll win some games soon.

          4) Matt Rodgers was 25-37/304 passing, so it wasn't his fault Pack lost their third game in row, but they did lose to Atlanta squad that had lost its first two road games by combined score of 48-18. Good balance for Falcon offense: 176 rushing yards, 194 passing.

          3) Buffalo QB Edwards got KO'd on third play of game, and Cards had 76-46 advantage in plays run, dominating ball in 41-17 over the Bills in the desert. Bills' first TD was 83-yard bomb to Evans, but it put Buffalo's defense right back on field-- Arizona scored on all four of their first half possessions.

          2) Tampa Bay started nine of its 11 drives 80+ yards from goal line and went 3/out on six of 11 drives in their 16-13 loss in Denver.

          1) Think about how close the Colts are to being 0-4; they trailed at Minnesota 15-0 in third quarter, won 18-15, then trailed 27-10 with 5:00 left Sunday, and somehow won, 31-27. They've already had a bye, so they need to get healthier while still improving, and soon.

            This Day in MLB

            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
            This day in Baseball….
            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On October 6 in Baseball History...

            * 1911 - Cy Young's farewell appearance in a major league game is a letdown, as he loses to Brooklyn 13-3 wearing a Braves uniform in his 906th game.

            * 1919 - After a Sunday rainout, Hod Eller blanks the White Sox on three hits, fanning six in a row in the second and third innings. Once again a big inning and some sloppy play give the Reds a 5-0 victory and a four-games-to-one lead in the best-of-nine World Series.

            * 1920 - When Wheeler Johnston pinch-hits for Cleveland in the ninth inning of Game Two, his brother Jimmy is playing third base for Brooklyn. They become the first brothers to take opposite sides in a World Series. Brooklyn's Burleigh Grimes tosses a 3-0 shutout to even the Series.

            * 1926 - Babe Ruth hit three homers, leading the New York Yankees to a 10-5 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in the fourth game of the World Series.

            * 1936 - The Yankees roll to a 13-5 World Series-ending victory. Lefty Gomez is the winning pitcher, his second of the Series despite a team-worst 4.70 ERA. In the six games the Yankees score 43 runs to 23 by the Giants.

            * 1938 - Lefty Gomez sets a record with his sixth World Series victory without a loss with a 6-3 win in Game Two against the Cubs. The Yankees return home with a 2-0 Series lead.

            * 1941 - The Yankees top the Dodgers, 3-1, to take the World Series in five games. Pitcher Ernie Bonham, the fifth Yankees pitcher to start in the Series, wins the clincher with a four-hitter.

            * 1945 - Tavern owner "Billy Goat" Sianis buys a box seat for his goat for Game Four of the World Series and is escorted out of Wrigley Field. In retaliation Sianis casts a "goat curse" over the Cubs. The Tigers tie the series on Dizzy Trout's 4-1 win.

            * 1947 - The Yankees beat the Dodgers 5-2 to win the World Series in seven games. Relief pitcher Hugh Casey of the Dodgers appears in six games, winning two while notching an 0.87 ERA. Series heroes Bill Bevens, Al Gionfriddo, and Cookie Lavagetto will not play another major-league game.

            * 1948 - In the opening game of the World Series, the Boston Braves beat Bob Feller and the Cleveland Indians 1-0 with only two hits.

            * 1957 - With the score tied at 5-5, Eddie Mathews of the Braves evens the World Series with a two-run home run in the bottom of the tenth to end Game Four. In the Series' first famous "shoeblack incident," pinch-hitter Nippy Jones convinces umpire Augie Donatelli that Tommy Byrne's pitch hit him on the foot.

            * 1963 - Frank Howard led Los Angeles to a 2-1 win over the New York Yankees with a home run and a single, giving the Dodgers a four-game sweep in the World Series.

            * 1966 - Jim Palmer, 20, became the youngest player to pitch a World Series shutout as the Baltimore Orioles beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-0. Sandy Koufax was the loser, his last appearance in the major leagues.

            * 1968 - St. Louis dumps Detroit 10-1 in Game Four. Bob Gibson, fanning ten, earns his seventh straight World Series victory. The Cardinals have a seemingly insurmountable 3-1 Series lead.

            * 1969 - The Mets rally twice and win the first NL Championship Series. Tommie Agee, Ken Boswell, and Wayne Garrett hit home runs and fans swarm the Shea Stadium field after a 7-4 win.

            * 1971 - The Pirates outslug the Giants, 9-5, to win the LCS, three games to one. Richie Hebner has three hits and three RBI, including a homer.

            * 1979 - Scott McGregor's 8-0 shutout of the Angels gives the Orioles the AL pennant. Pat Kelly notches three RBI with a home run and a single.

            * 1980 - The Astros finally win, whipping the Dodgers in a one-game playoff at Dodger Stadium, 7-1. Art Howe drives in four runs and Joe Niekro wins his 20th game of the season to put Houston in the postseason for the first time since entering the major leagues in 1962.

            * 1983 - Baltimore's Mike Boddicker struck out a playoff record 14 batters en route to a 4-0, five-hit victory over the Chicago White Sox in the second game of the ALCS.

            * 1984 - Steve Garvey's two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning of Game Four gives San Diego a 7-5 win over Chicago and evens the NLCS.

            * 1985 - Phil Niekro of the New York Yankees became the 18th 300-game winner as he blanked the Toronto Blue Jays 8-0 on the final day of the season. At 46, he also became the oldest pitcher to throw a shutout.

            * 1995 - The Indians sweep the Division Series with an 8-2 victory over the Red Sox at Fenway Park. Mo Vaughn, who will later be named MVP for 1995, and slugger Jose Canseco are a combined 0-for-27 for Boston.

            * 1997 - The Indians complete their surprising victory over the Yankees with a tense 4-3 win at Jacobs Field in Game Five of the Division Series. Jose Mesa saves rookie Jaret Wright's second win of the series when he retires Bernie Williams with the tying run on second in the ninth inning.

Tampa Bay at Chicago White Sox (-125, 8 1/2)

The Chicago White continue to be at their best when facing elimination.

The White Sox look for a second straight home victory to even their AL division series when they face the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 4 on Monday.

Playing to keep its season alive is nothing new for Chicago. Last week, the White Sox won three straight home contests just to reach the postseason.

The White Sox beat Cleveland on the final Sunday of the regular season to remain one-half game behind Minnesota in the AL Central. Chicago then beat Detroit last Monday in the makeup contest to force a one-game playoff Tuesday with the Twins for the division title.

John Danks, who stymied Minnesota in a 1-0 victory to claim the title in that contest, was the winner in Chicago's 5-3 victory over Tampa Bay in Game 3 on Sunday to stave off elimination after the Rays won the first two games at home of the best-of-five series.

A possible Game 5 would be Wednesday in St. Petersburg.

                          Pick: White Sox

                          L.A. Angels at Boston (-145, 8 1/2)

The Los Angeles Angels hope a rare postseason victory at Fenway Park will help provide a spark and get their AL division series back home.

The Angels look to win consecutive playoff road games against the Boston Red Sox for the first time while trying to again avoid elimination in Game 4 on Monday night.

After dropping the first two of the series in Anaheim, Los Angeles gutted out a 5-4, 12-inning victory over Boston on Sunday to avoid being swept in the best-of-five series. Not only did the win snap an 11-game playoff losing streak to the defending World Series champions, it put the Angels in position to move the series back to Anaheim for a decisive contest with another win Monday.

"We've got to come back out here and get after it again,'' said catcher Mike Napoli, who went 3-for-5 with two homers and three RBIs on Sunday. "We're not done yet.''

A possible Game 5 would be Wednesday at Angel Stadium where Los Angeles would need to snap a six-game postseason home losing streak to the Red Sox to reach the ALCS.

                          Pick: Red Sox
