    Daily Sports Roundup: October 4

There's plenty of action on the college gridiron on Saturday, including three matchups between ranked teams. Here's a look at the schedule in your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

Southern Cal's big loss to Oregon State knocked them from the top spot in the rankings all the way down to No. 9, which is where they sit this weekend for their game at home against No. 23 Oregon. The Trojans, though, still have their supporters, as they've been pegged as 16-point favorites to beat the Ducks and get right back on the winning track.

The other two ranked matchups on Saturday are No. 14 Ohio State at No. 18 Wisconsin, and No. 13 Auburn at No. 19 Vanderbilt. The Buckeyes are listed as slim 1.5-point road favorites against the Badgers, while the Tigers are favored by 4 points.

Top-ranked Oklahoma will play at Baylor on Saturday as huge 26.5-point favorites. Other games involving ranked teams on the schedule: Kentucky at No. 2 Alabama (-16), No. 4 Missouri (-10.5) at Nebraska, No. 5 Texas (-13) at Colorado, No. 6 Penn State (-13) at Purdue, No. 7 Texas Tech (-7.5) at Kansas State, No. 12 Florida (-24.5) at Arkansas, No. 16 Kansas (-12.5) at Iowa State, Western Kentucky at No. 20 Virginia Tech (-28), Texas A&M at No. 21 Oklahoma State (-25), Hawaii at No. 22 Fresno State (-22.5), and finally No. 24 Connecticut at North Carolina (-7).

    Other Notable Events

The Brewers and Cubs will both be trying to avoid elimination on Saturday night when they battle the Phillies and Dodgers, respectively, in the third game of their NL series.

The Phillies/Brewers matchup will be a pitching duel between Jamie Moyer (16-7, 3.71 ERA) and Dave Bush (9-10, 4.18 ERA). Moyer was on fire down the stretch, as the team is 9-1 in his last 10 trips to the mound; that includes a win over the Brewers on September 11. Bush (9-10, 4.18 ERA) last grabbed a win in his start against the Pirates on August 29, but he's allowed three or fewer earned runs in nine of his past 10 outings.

The Cubs/Dodgers game will feature Chicago's Rich Harden (5-1, 1.77 ERA in the National League) and Los Angeles' Hiroki Kuroda (9-10, 3.73 ERA). Harden has given up more than two earned runs in just one of his past 10 outings, and the Cubs are 8-2 in those contests. Kuroda tossed five shutout innings against the Giants in his last trip to the mound, and he's allowed three or fewer earned runs in eight of his last 10 starts.

    The Rest of the Schedule

The cities of Prague and Stockholm will host the opening games of the NHL season on Saturday. The Rangers and Lightning will meet in the Czech Republic at 12:00pm ET, while the Penguins and Senators will take to the ice in Sweden at 2:30pm ET. Those teams will play once again on Sunday afternoon before returning home next week.

Finally, there are two Canadian Football League games on the Saturday schedule, with Montreal (-10) playing a road game in Hamilton, and Edmonton (-5) hosting Winnipeg.

    A Peek at the Future

The National Football League's Sunday night game this week is Pittsburgh at Jacksonville, with the Jaguars listed as 4-point home favorites . . . other notable Sunday NFL matchups include Seattle at the Giants (-7), Washington at Philadelphia (-6), Tennessee (-3) at Baltimore, and Tampa Bay at Denver (-3). As well, the unbeaten Bills will play a road game in Arizona against the Cards in a game pegged as a pick'em.

        Week 15 CFL games

        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        Saturday, October 4

Montreal (9-4) @ Hamilton (2-11)-- Alouettes already beat Hamilton twice this season, 33-10 in road opener (+2.5), then 40-33 at home in Week 6 (-10). TiCats are winless except for two wins vs Toronto; last week, Hamilton had 95 passing yards, 94 penalty yards in a hideous 40-10 loss at British Columbia. TiCats lost last six games (1-5 vs the spread)- they haven't covered any of their five home losses. Five of last seven Montreal games stayed under the total.

Winnipeg (5-8) @ Edmonton (7-6)-- Eskimos lost 30-23 in Winnipeg last week (+3), their third loss in last four games; Edmonton is 5-1 at home, losing only to Calgary, with wins by 3-19-11-17-5 points. Last week was Bombers' third win in row; they're just 3-4 at home. Under is 6-2 in Winnipeg's last eight games. Bombers outrushed Eskimos by 156-35 last week, as Ray was 36-43/410 passing, but those numbers translated to just 23 Edmonton points.

            Saturday, October 4

Montreal Alouettes (9-4) at Hamilton Tiger Cats (2-11) (+10)

The Alouettes are riding a three-game win streak heading into Hamilton and are hoping to clinch the East Division title. Montreal won its last three in Hamilton and won the last eight contests against the Tiger Cats.

The Ti-Cats give up more sacks than any other team in the league and it was visibly painful watching their o-line trying to protect Quinton Porter last week. The unit promised to guard Porter better this week but it’s hard to imagine better results with the Alouettes’ Keron Williams and John Bowman rushing on every down.

            Pick: Montreal

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (5-8) at Edmonton Eskimos (7-6) (-4)

There is bad blood between these two teams after last week’s game. Eskimos linebacker Agustin Barrenechea gave a violent helmet-to-helmet hit on Winnipeg QB Kevin Glenn in the final minutes. Winnipeg backers are irate that Barrenechea was only fined and not suspended for the hit.

The Bombers have won three in a row while the Eskimos are trying to stop a two-game losing streak.

Last week, the Blue Bombers claimed victory in Winnipeg against these Eskimos, 30-23. Kevin Glenn completed 18 of 26 pass attempts for 268 yards while Edmonton’s QB, Ricky Ray, threw for 434 yards and two touchdowns. Once again expect an aerial showdown between these two, and lots of points on the board.

I think it comes down to the last possession.

            Pick: Winnipeg

Moyer has allowed three runs or less in eight of his last 10 starts. He’s 10-3 on the road this season and owns a solid 9-5 career mark against the Brewers to go along with a 3.63 ERA. Hot Lines: Saturday's best MLB bets
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Philadelphia Phillies at Milwaukee Brewers (-117, 9)

The Phillies look to complete a sweep and advance to the NLCS on Saturday night when they visit the Brewers, who are still looking for their first playoff victory in nearly 26 years.

Philadelphia ended a 13-year playoff drought by rallying to win the NL East title in 2007, only to lose three straight playoff games to eventual NL champion Colorado.

The Phillies have looked determined to get the bad taste of last year's playoffs out of their mouths this year. After a dominant pitching performance from Cole Hamels led them to a 3-1 victory in Game 1 Wednesday, Shane Victorino hit a second-inning grand slam off Milwaukee ace CC Sabathia in a 5-2 win Thursday.

If history is any indication, Philadelphia has a very good shot at closing out this series. All four teams that have come back from 0-2 deficits to win division series since baseball introduced its current wild-card format in 1995 were AL clubs, while all 16 teams that have been down 0-2 in NL division series have gone on to lose - 13 in sweeps.

The Brewers are just as willing to overlook the long odds of a potential comeback in the series. To accomplish the feat, though, they'll likely need to improve at the plate. Milwaukee, which won six of its last seven regular-season games to capture the wild card and its first playoff berth since 1982, has three runs and seven hits in the first two games of the postseason.

                        Pick: Phillies

Chicago Cubs at Los Angeles Dodgers (+122, 7 ½)

On the verge of another disappointing October, Chicago will try to avoid a ninth straight postseason loss and a second consecutive division series sweep on Saturday, while Los Angeles looks to secure its first playoff series victory in 20 years in Game 3 at Dodger Stadium.

The Cubs had the best record and the most runs in the NL during the regular season, and they went 55-26 on Chicago's North Side, but they struggled at home in almost every facet in the first two games against the Dodgers.

"It wasn't good baseball. In fact, the last two days, that's probably been the two worst games we've played all year, from a walking and errors standpoint," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. "It wasn't fun to watch, I'll tell you that."

Piniella will shake things up a bit in hopes of turning the Cubs' fortunes. One guaranteed change will be benching Kosuke Fukudome, batting .173 since Aug. 2, after the rookie went 0-for-8 with four strikeouts in the first two games.

"From now on, I don't want to hear about Fukudome anymore as far as whether he's going to play or not," Piniella said. "I'm going to play (Mike) Fontenot or Reed Johnson or somebody else and that's the end of that story. The kid is struggling and there's no sense sending him out there anymore."

Former Athletics starter Rich Harden (5-1, 1.77 ERA) will try to help the Cubs begin such a run. Chicago acquired the right-hander from Oakland in July, and while Harden has delivered, allowing just 39 hits in 71 innings while striking out 89, there are concerns about wildness after he walked 11 in 11 innings in his last two starts.

Harden has made one previous postseason start, allowing three runs and walking five in 5 2-3 innings of a 3-0 loss to Detroit in the 2006 AL championship series.

The hard-throwing Canadian has never faced Los Angeles, but he has plenty of experience with Dodgers slugger Manny Ramirez. The former Red Sox outfielder is 3-for-11 in his career against Harden, but all three hits were home runs.

                        Pick: Cubs
