  • Honest baseball question...

Why do they play a massive 162 regular season games and then after 6 months of grinding out 6 out of 7 games a week you have only 3 of 5 games to decide your long season? Didnt the NBA used to do this in first round too and then switched to 7 game series? Do you guys think they will ever change it because I personally think its stupid. What do you guys think?

Best of 7 like every other series....

I just find it strange that you play 162 games for 6 straight months 6 out of 7 days a week and then a couple bad games and your toast. I mean if you are down 0-2 in a best of 7 series you definately have a shot at coming back. Down 0-2 in a best in 5 its lights out. Just think based on the number of games played it seems odd to condense a small series for the ENTIRE season on the line. I guess thats what makes it exciting and pressure filled huh....

I would be for it if they shortened the regular season by the same amount. Wont happen though because of all the record geeks would have asterisks out the wahoo.
        NBA is a joke

Yea man I know I have heard the same thing from buddies and co workers. It should be best of 7 all the way around IMO. I mean if the only defense is that the season is so long already then correct, just lessen a few less regular season games to make it possible.

I agree to a point, but you have to agree that if you lose the first two game at home in the most important series of the season, you really deserve to be in a big hole.
The Cubs had a great season;with a very good manager, why can't they come back and win the series? If LA can win two in Chicago, why can't the Cubs reciprocate in LA and get the series back to Chicago for game 5?
Ps To use your argument, why should the White Sox and Minnesota decide everything in a one game playoff? They played 162 games;why should their fate be decided in 1 game-why not 2 of 3? The answer of course is all for TV and because the regular playoffs would have to be pushed back and/or the different series would not be in sync. with one another-a definite no-no.

Yea the one game playoffs should be best of 3 or best of 5 and ALL playoff rounds should be best of 7 IMO....lessen the amount of regular season games if you have to...I mean a few less regular season games when playing a significant amount of 162 shouldnt hurt...but I guess tradition has to do with it....

It is best of five because the way they look at is because these 4 playoff teams shouldnt even be here if not for the division series. Teams used to go straight to the World Series after the regular season before they made 4 divisions. When they switched to 6 divisions they made the first round only 5 games. I personally think they will go to 7 games because it isnt really fair to a team like the Cubs or Brewers to be shortened up like this.

The one game playoff is perfect because that couldnt be decided in 162 games so they have a 163rd.......its not really a 1 game playoff actually.......The games with the White Sox, Tigers and Twins on Monday and Tuesday were regular season games.

NO chado the 1 game playoff should remain the same, which is ONE GAME....without the 1 game playoff you lose out on moments like angels@mariners in the mid 90's when griffey stole bases, and "the big unit" had a mullet, and a 100 mph fastball....

I have an honest baseball question for you chado, did you start this dumb thread because you have a cubs WS future bet ?

The reason why the NBA went to 7 games in every round is $$$$. more games = more money ...you'll have to ask bud selig why the MLB has the 5-7-7 format instead of the 7-7-7
Personally, I like this better and so does the majority. I'm glad there is only 4 playoff teams in each League...a 5 game series in the opening round ensures each team must have a strong 1-2 punch in the rotation to get to the Championship Series (see 2007 cleveland indians, CC / Carmona)

Teams in the regular season can go on 4, 6, 8 game losing streaks at times and still maintain one of the best records in baseball because of the length of the season with the amount of games. And then all of a sudden in a best of 5 series they can catch a few bad breaks and lose ONLY 2 in a row and BOOM, thier ENTIRE strong season is down the tubes. Down 0-2 in a best of 7 is very makeable to come back from. In a best of 5 not so much. Thats why I dont like it JMHO...

The way the cubs are playing it could be a nine game series and they would find a way to lose it! But it doesnt make sense to have a 5 game mini series. When you have a seven game series in the NL/AL Championship and World Series.
