    Daily Sports Roundup

    Thursday, October 2

College football goes head-to-head with another day of baseball playoffs on Thursday. Here's a glimpse at the six contests (three in each sport) in your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

The top college football team in action on Thursday night is No. 10 South Florida, who will play host to Pittsburgh. The Bulls are 5-0 so far this season, with their most impressive win coming against then-No. 13 Kansas on September 12 (by a score of 37-34). The Panthers were beaten by Bowling Green in their season opener, but they've got the job done since then with wins over Buffalo, Iowa, and Syracuse. South Florida is pegged as a 13.5-point favorite in this contest, with the game's total sitting at 48 points.

No. 15 Utah will also take to the field on Thursday night; they'll get a visit from Oregon State. The Utes are 5-0 on the season as well, picking up five straight victories over Michigan, UNLV, Utah State, Air Force, and Weber State. Oregon State is only 2-2 on the season, but they managed to pull off a huge upset versus Southern Cal on September 25. If the Beavers plan on knocking off another ranked team on Thursday night they'll have to do it as 11.5-point underdogs. The game's total is set at 53 points.

The final game is a Conference USA dud between 2-3 Memphis and 1-4 UAB. Both the Tigers and the Blazers are looking for their first conference victory of the season, and Memphis is pegged as a 3.5-point road favorite to secure that win. The total sits at 57.

    Other Notable Events

The Rays will host their first-ever postseason contest on Thursday afternoon (2:30pm ET), and they'll be looking for James Shields (14-8, 3.56 ERA) to pitch them to a victory over the White Sox. Shields' last real outing came on September 23 against the Orioles, and he picked up a win after allowing just two earned runs over seven innings of work. In his last 10 outings Shields has a 5-1 record with four no-decisions. Javier Vazquez (12-16, 4.67 ERA) will get the start for Chicago, although he hasn't been effective lately; the righthander has surrendered 18 earned runs and 18 hits over his last 12 innings.

Both National League playoff series continue on Thursday, with Milwaukee at Philadelphia at 6:05pm ET, and the Dodgers at the Cubs at 9:35pm ET. The Brewers will send CC Sabathia (11-2, 1.65 ERA in the NL) to the mound against Brett Myers (10-13, 4.55 ERA). Sabathia has surrendered just two earned runs over his last three starts, and Milwaukee is 8-2 in his last 10 outings. Myers, on the other hand, has been pounded for 14 earned runs over his last two trips to the mound. Still, he pitched well against the Brewers on September 14, allowing two hits in a complete-game victory.

Thursday's Dodgers/Cubs matchup will feature a duel between Los Angeles' Chad Billingsley (16-10, 3.14 ERA) and Chicago's Carlos Zambrano (14-6, 3.91 ERA). Billingsley hasn't been tagged with a loss since August 25, and the Dodgers are 5-1 in his last six trips to the mound. Zambrano threw an impressive no-hitter against the Astros on September 14, but since then he's been knocked around for 13 earned runs over just 6 1-3 innings of work in a pair of rough starts versus the Cardinals and Mets.

    The Rest of the Schedule

Don't like those half-dozen options above? That's all you're going to get on Thursday.

    News from the Wire

Red Sox pitcher Josh Beckett (oblique injury) is on track to start for the team in Game 3 of their ALDS . . . Brewers pitcher Ben Sheets is not on the team's roster for their NLDS because of his elbow injury . . . Rays outfielder Carl Crawford will try to play through his finger injury this week . . . the Bengals signed running back Cedric Benson to a contract.

    A Peek at the Future

The two American League series continue on Friday night, with games in Tampa Bay and Los Angeles . . . there are also two more college football games on Friday night: No. 8 BYU at Utah State, and Cincinnati at Marshall . . .Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kyle Busch, and Tony Stewart are all pegged at 5/1 Vegas odds to win the Sprint Cup event at Talladega on Sunday, with Jimmie Johnson at 7/1, and Jeff Gordon sitting back at 8/1.

Thursday's List of 13: Our college football List of 13..........

        13) Middle Tennessee-- Got to stay to the end with the Raiders; on Tuesday, they beat Florida Atlantic with 33-yard pass on last play of game. They had guy tackled on 1-yard line on last play of game in loss at Kentucky, when a TD would have won the game. Stockstill, the former Florida State QB, is doing good rebuilding job at MTSU.

        12) Oregon State-- USC lost its last two trips to Corvallis; if you've ever seen the Beavers on the road, you wouldn't recognize them, as they routinely go in tank and get crushed on foreign soil. But at home well, they just play with more confidence, I guess.

        11) Ole Miss-- Snead was less than 50% passer in Gainesville, but in his second road start, Rebels pulled off huge upset of Gators, with Snead averaging over 20 yards per completion.

        10) Houston-- Watched Cougars gain 621 yards in destruction of the East Carolina Pirates, then wondered how the hell Houston had lost its previous three games? Inquiring minds want to know.

        9) UTEP-- Miners went 51 weeks without a win, then just drilled a favored Central Florida team that had led 7-3 at half week before at Boston College. Mike Price has some talent; if he keeps his players healthy, Miners should have good second half of season.

        8) Oklahoma State-- Mike Gundy, the coach who became famous for his postgame rant against a reporter last year, has an undefeated team so far this year. Now the schedule gets tougher; they still have Oklahoma, Texas, Texas Tech to deal with.

        7) Arkansas-- Welcome to the SEC, Bobby Petrino; they've lost last two games by combined score of 94-20. Look at the SEC; Vanderbilt is probably going bowling. Arkansas and Mississippi State are two worst teams in the SEC; bet the natives are just thrilled with that.

        6) Northwestern-- Last time the Wildcats were this good, Kennedy was president, the Giants played in a World Series and an expansion baseball team in Queens lost 120 games. 1962- Pat Fitzgerald, their coach, wasn't even born yet. Good for them.

        5) UL-Lafayette-- Ragin' Cajuns lost 20-17 at Illinois, then 45-37 at Kansas State; maybe the Sun Belt is catching up a little bit, as far as non-league games go. UL-Monroe beat Alabama LY, Maryland lost to Middle Tennessee this year. Could they get two bowl bids?

        4) North Carolina-- Trailed 14-0 at Miami, but 3rd-stringer Sexton came in at QB and saved day for Tar Heels, giving Butch Davis win in his return to south Florida. Matter of time before Carolina is one of the best teams in the ACC.

        3) Ball State-- Davis is one of best QBs in country; Cardinals waxed Indiana, then had no letdown in drilling MAC rival Kent State, 41-20 What happens to BCS if Letterman's alma mater runs the table?

        2) Oklahoma-- Its not January yet, so Sooners are rolling; the TCU team they hammered last week is pretty darn good. Rivalry game in Dallas against the Longhorns will be their first true test.

        1) Alabama-- Ripped the heart out of Clemson; Tigers still haven't recovered from that. Then they led 31-0 at Georgia, at the half. Will be while before the Dawgs get over that. Also squashed Arkansas, but Hogs aren't so good. Crimson Tide should be playing January 1, or maybe even a little bit later.

            Week 15 CFL games

            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            Friday, October 3

BCLions (8-5) @ Toronto (4-9)-- Lions won four games in row; they scored 32.5 ppg during win streak, are 3-3 on road, with wins by 18- 23-6 points. BC is 4-6 vs spread as favorite this season, 1-2 on road. Argos lost four in row, six of last seven games, getting outscored in last four games, 162-48. Toronto covered one of last six as dog, lost four of six at home, with losses by 19-18-30-28 points. Last five BC games stayed under the total.

Calgary (9-4) @ Saskatchewan (8-5)-- Two sides going in opposite directions; Stampeders won four games in row, scoring 39.3 ppg; the road team won both previous meetings, as Roughriders won 22-21 in Calgary in Week 6 (that made Riders 6-0), then lost 30-25 at home the next week, game that started Roders' current slide, and started Stamps' hot streak. Saskatchewan scored just 19.8 ppg in six games since their bye. Calgary allowed 33.3 ppg in last four games that weren't against the Argomauts, who they played and crushed the last two weeks.

Last week was Bombers' third win in row; they're just 3-4 at home. Under is 6-2 in Winnipeg's last eight games. Bombers outrushed Eskimos by 156-35 last week, as Ray was 36-43/410 passing, but those numbers translated to just 23 Edmonton points.

                Write-up

                Thursday, October 2

                --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tampa Rays are 14-3 at home when Shields starts; he is 2-0, 3.22 in his last four starts; he gave up one run in six IP against White Sox May 30, his only '08 start vs Pale Hose, who are playing fourth different team in last five days. Chicago won its last three games, all must-wins. Great majority of Rays have never been in this atmosphere before, so unsure how they'll react to it. Vazquez has a 14.12 RA in his last three starts; he was 1-2, 3.54 against the Rays this season.

Sabathia is making his fourth start in row on three days' rest; he's been a warrior, going 2-0, 1.13 in his last two starts; he didn't face Philadelphia this season. Brewers are 14-3 when he starts for them. Myers allowed 16 runs in 8.1 IP in his last two starts, after a complete game 6-1 win vs Brewers Sept. 14. Milwaukee didn't score until 9th inning yesterday, had tying runs in scoring position when Lidge got final out. Edge in this game has to go to Brewers, as hot as Sabathia has been.

Zambrano allowed 13 runs in 6.1 IP in two starts after his no-hitter in Milwaukee against the Astros; he made two starts against LA this year, allowing one run in eight IP May 28, then gave up seven runs in 6.2 IP ten days later at Dodger Stadium. Billingsley is 3-0, 3.91 in his last four starts; he allowed six runs in 11 IP in two starts against Cubs this year. Dodgers spanked Chicago last night, silencing the home crowd. Game is little later tonight, crowd should be little more vocal.

Chicago White Sox at Tampa Bay Rays [TBS | 2:37 PM ET]

White Sox: Chicago manager Ozzie Guillen said late in the year that Javier Vazquez needed to step up in big games. Apparently, Vazquez wasn’t listening. In his last three starts, he went 0-3, allowing a ridiculous 19 runs in just 12 innings pitched. Vazquez has started 12 games against the Rays in his career, going 5-4 with a 4.36 ERA.

White Sox are 6-0 in their last 6 playoff road games.
White Sox are 11-1 in their last 12 playoff games.

Key Injuries - OF Carlos Quentin (wrist) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 3 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

Rays (-180, O/U 8.5): James Shields gets the ball for the Rays today and he’s been on top of his game in three of his last four starts. Take out a bad performance against the Twins and Shields has given up just 5 runs in his last 24 innings. Shields was dominant at Tropicana Field during the regular season, going 9-2 with a 2.59 ERA. He’s 0-1 in three career starts against the White Sox with a 4.50 ERA.

Rays are 21-7 in Shields' last 28 home starts.
Rays are 1-4 in their last 5 vs. AL Central.

                  Key Injuries - NONE

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Milwaukee Brewers at Philadelphia Phillies [TBS | 6:07 PM ET]

Brewers (-135, O/U 8): After a couple of shaky starts, CC Sabathia returned to his dominant self in his final two outings of the season, allowing only two runs in 16 innings of work. Sabathia is an even 4-4 on the road this season but does posses a strong 2.46 ERA away from home. He has faced the Phillies twice in his career, going 1-1 with a 4.97 ERA.

Brewers are 2-9 in their last 11 road games.
Brewers are 0-6 in the last 6 meetings with Philly.

Key Injuries - 3B Russell Branyan (back) is questionable.

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Phillies: Brett Myers had been rolling over the last month of the season before he was hammered in his final two starts. In losses to the Marlins and Braves, Myers was blasted for 19 hits and 16 runs in just 8.1 innings. Things could improve tonight, however. Myers has owned the Brewers over his career, going 4-1 with a remarkable 1.77 ERA against Milwaukee.

Phillies are 7-0 in their last 7 vs. NL Central.
Phillies are 1-8 in Myers' last 9 starts with 7 or more days of rest.

                  Key Injuries - NONE

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Los Angeles Dodgers at Chicago Cubs [TBS | 9:37 PM ET]

Dodgers: Chad Billingsley has been consistent over his last 10 games, allowing three runs or less nine times. He’s only 6-6 on the road this year, although his ERA away from home is a stellar 3.33. Billingsley has only started two games against the Cubs but he was hit hard by Chicago in his most recent outing, giving up seven hits and four runs over five innings.
