    Daily Sports Roundup

    Wednesday, October 1

There are three baseball playoff games and a single college football matchup on the schedule for Wednesday. Here's a look at those contests in your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

There is just one college football game on the schedule for Wednesday night - and that's Louisiana Tech at No. 17 Boise State. The Broncos are coming off a big 37-32 win over Oregon on September 20 that moved them to 3-0 on the season (they also beat Idaho State and Bowling Green). Louisiana Tech has managed to get past both Mississippi State and Southeastern Louisiana, but they were outclassed when they ran into Kansas back on September 6 - the Bulldogs were blanked 29-0 in that contest.

The oddsmakers fully expect Louisiana Tech to get crushed by a ranked team once again on Wednesday - they're big 22.5-point underdogs against the unbeaten Broncos.

    Other Notable Events

With the AL Central sideshows of Monday and Tuesday now in the books we get to start watching some real playoff action on Wednesday. Both National League Division Series get going on Wednesday, while the Red Sox and Angels hook up in some AL action.

The matchups in the Senior Circuit are Milwaukee at Philadelphia, and the Dodgers at the Cubs. Game 1 of the Brewers/Phillies series (3:05pm ET) will feature a pitching battle between Yovani Gallardo (0-0, 1.88 ERA) and Cole Hamels (14-10, 3.09 ERA). Gallardo made his long-awaited return from injury on September 25, holding the Pirates to one earned run over four innings of work. Hamels is coming off a loss to the Braves, but he's held the opposition to two or fewer earned runs in nine of his last 10 starts.

In the opener of the Dodgers/Cubs series (6:35pm ET) it'll be Derek Lowe (14-11, 3.24 ERA) vs. Ryan Dempster (17-6, 2.96 ERA). Lowe has given up just two earned runs over his last 36 1-3 innings of work, and he's 6-1 with three no-decisions in his last 10 outings. Dempster gave up just one earned run over five innings in each of last two starts, and he's allowed three or fewer earned runs in nine of his past 10 mound trips.

Over in the AL the Red Sox/Angels opener (10:05pm ET) will have Boston's Jon Lester (16-6, 3.21 ERA) taking on Los Angeles' John Lackey (12-5, 3.75 ERA). Lester held the Indians to one earned run on two hits over six innings in his last start, and he has four wins in his past five games. Lackey will be looking to bounce back from a pounding at the hands of the Rangers last time out in which he gave up 10 runs in 2 2-3 innings.

All of the home teams are pegged as the favorites for Wednesday's games; the Phillies and Hamels are at -200, while the Cubs are at -159, and the Angels are now at -117.

    The Rest of the Schedule

The best-of-five WNBA Finals tips off on Wednesday night, with Detroit at San Antonio. The Shock topped New York 75-73 in the deciding game of the Eastern Conference Finals on Monday night, while the Silver Stars bounced Los Angeles 76-72 on Sunday to advance past the Western Conference Finals. Game 2 will be played Friday night.

    News from the Wire

Steelers RB Rashard Mendenhall is out for the season after suffering a shoulder injury on Monday night . . . Lions RB Rudi Johnson has replaced Kevin Smith as the team's starter in the backfield . . . Bengals QB Carson Palmer plans on playing this weekend after sitting out against the Browns on Sunday . . . Browns QB Derek Anderson has a better grip on his starting gig after the team's win over the weekend . . . Penguins defenseman Sergei Gonchar will miss four-to-six months due to shoulder surgery.

    A Peek at the Future

The fourth MLB divisional series gets underway in Tampa Bay on Thursday . . . there are two ranked college football teams in action on Thursday night, with Pittsburgh at No. 10 South Florida, and Oregon State at No. 15 Utah. The Bulls are pegged as 13.5-point favorites in their contest, while the Utes have been listed as 12-point favorites . . . the Sprint Cup Series hits Talladega this week for Sunday afternoon's Amp Energy 500.

      Six-pack for Wednesday

-- Since 2004, Dallas Cowboys are 12-14 in division games, 28-14 against everyone else.

-- Odd college stat, thanks to Pat Forde of espn.com: In its last eleven losses, Clemson was favored to win - they won the last three times they were the underdog.

-- Georgia has to cut down on its penalties; they've had 42 penalties for 367 yards in their last four games.

-- Attendance went down in major league baseball this year for the first time in five years.

-- Sporting News surveyed 20 college presidents; 15 of them said football coach at their school makes more money than they do. They also get scrutinized a lot more.

-- High drama in Murfreesboro, TN last night, as the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders threw a 33-yard TD pass on the last play of the game, giving them a 14-13 win over Fla Atlantic.

Wednesday's List of 13: Random thoughts with playoffs here

        13) Best possible theater for World Series would be Dodgers vs Boston, with Manny, Nomar, Derek Lowe, Joe Torre going back to Fenway to renew acquaintances. Plus, Dodgers' owner is from Boston. Hope it doesn't happen, but networks would enjoy it, and thats all that really matters.

        12) My ideal World Series? Brewers-Rays. Small markets rule.

        11) Rays did catch break in that White Sox had to use Danks in the playoff game, so now the earliest he can pitch is Game 3 on Sunday. It is weird typing Rays and playoffs in same sentence.

        10) Five of the eight playoff managers have won World Series as a skipper; Sveum, Maddon have won rings as a coach, so Charlie Manuel is only manager with no championship ring.

        9) My A's didn't come close to playoffs, but when they traded Joe Blanton to Philly, they put the Phillies in the playoffs.

        8) Would be curious to know how much baseball banked from the playoff game at Comiskey Park Tuesday night.

        7) How about Ken Griffey Jr throwing Cuddyer out at the plate in fifth inning? That midseason acquisition is worth its weight in gold.

        6) CC Sabathia's agent had to be rooting for the Mets to make the playoffs; his client made his last three starts on three days' rest, and has logged 253 IP this year, 494 over last two years.

        5) CC stands for Carsten Charles, if you want to win a bet.

        4) What kind of TV ratings would Cub-White Sox Series get, or if the LA teams both made it? Have feeling anything involving the Cubs is going to get decent ratings.

        3) How stupid would baseball look, having two travel days in a World Series played in one city? Just like in 2000, when teams that are eight miles apart needed a travel day. Ridiculous.

        2) Rays went 0-7 the week before the All-Star Break, looked lot like a dead team. They went 24-10 right after the break. They're the '69 Mets all over again. Don't bet against them, but they're so inexperienced in playoff ball, this has to be hard for them.

        1) That said, my prediction is that the Angels will win it all.

                      Hot lines: Today’s MLB bets
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Red Sox at Los Angeles Angels (-125, 8 ½)

The Los Angeles Angels have lost nine consecutive postseason games to the Boston Red Sox spanning three series and 22 years.

That run includes division series sweeps in 2004 and 2007, in which Boston outscored the Angels 44-16.

Sweeping Los Angeles again doesn't appear likely after the Angels took the last eight meetings from Boston in this year's nine-game season series. They averaged nearly seven runs over the nine meetings while batting .305 with 15 homers - at least one in each game. On the mound, the Angels limited Boston's potent lineup to three runs or fewer in each of the last seven matchups.

New acquisitions Torii Hunter, who hit 21 home runs and stole 19 bases after signing as a free agent last offseason, and Mark Teixeira - batting .358 with 13 homers in 54 games since arriving from Atlanta at the trade deadline - have strengthened the Angels' lineup.

"We're a different team than in years past," reliever Scot Shields, who has been with the club since 2001, said after Los Angeles beat the Red Sox 6-2 on July 29 at Fenway Park. "We have the total package."

                      Pick: Angels

Los Angeles Dodgers at Chicago Cubs (-154, 7 ½)

The 2008 Cubs are determined to put the past behind them and take the first step toward ending their century-long championship drought when they host Manny Ramirez and the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday in Game 1 of their best-of-five NL division series.

The Cubs finished with the best record in the NL this season to comfortably win the NL Central by 7 1/2 games over Milwaukee. They led the league in runs (855) and had five players with at least 20 homers, but will face a Los Angeles team that allowed the fewest runs in the league (648).

While Chicago cruised to its second straight division title, the Dodgers (84-78) trailed Arizona by 4 1/2 games on Aug. 29 before winning 18 of their next 23 to win the division by two games.

The Dodgers, who are 1-12 in four playoff series since winning the 1988 World Series, lost five of seven to the Cubs this season, but all of those games were played before Ramirez was traded to Los Angeles.

"Since we played them last, they've added Manny and he's quite a player," Chicago leadoff hitter Alfonso Soriano said. "They are a much better team with him so we are going to have be ready to play because it is going to be a tough series."

Soriano and Cubs cleanup hitter Aramis Ramirez are hoping to atone for a dismal performance in last season's playoffs, as they combined to go 2-for-26.

                      Pick: Over

Milwaukee Brewers at Philadelphia Phillies [TBS | 3:07 PM ET]

Brewers: Young Yovani Gallardo gets the start for Milwaukee in Game 1. Gallardo started four games for the Brewers this season, allowing just five runs in 24 innings of work to go along with 20 strikeouts. Gallardo has one career start against the Phillies where he took a no-decision after allowing just one runs over 6.2 innings. The UNDER is a perfect 4-0 in Gallardo’s starts this year.

Brewers are 2-8 in their last 10 road games.
Brewers are 1-6 in the last 7 meetings.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Phillies (-200, O/U 8.5): Cole Hamels gets the start tonight after pitching very well over the last month of the season. Hamels has allowed two runs or less eight times in his last 10 starts. He’s just 7-7 at home on the season, although his ERA is less than 3.00. In five career starts against the Brewers, Hamels is 2-1 with a 4.41 ERA.

Phillies are 13-3 in their last 16 games overall.
The OVER is 10-3-1 in Philadelphia's last 14 home games.

Key Injuries - OF Pat Burrell (back) is questionable.

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Los Angeles Dodgers at Chicago Cubs [TBS | 6:37 PM ET]

Dodgers: Derek Lowe has been one of the best pitchers in baseball over the last month of the season. In his last six starts, he’s shut out his opponent four times. Lowe hasn’t been quite as strong on the road in 2008, going 4-5 with a 4.42 ERA. In eight career starts against the Cubs, Lowe is 2-1 with an impressive 3.25 ERA.

Dodgers are 19-8 in their last 27 games overall.
Dodgers are 7-1 in their last 8 games following a loss.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 2 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

Cubs (-155): Ryan Dempster has been a moneymaking machine at Wrigley Field this season, going a stellar 14-3 with a 2.96 ERA. Dempster is only 4-3 in his career against the Dodgers, although his ERA is 3.01 in 19 games versus LA. The UNDER has been a strong play with Dempster on the mound recently, going 4-1 in his last five starts.

Cubs are 5-2 in the last 7 meetings.
The OVER is 7-3 in Chicago's last 10 playoff games.

Key Injuries - 2B Mark DeRosa (calf) is probable.

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Boston Red Sox at Los Angeles Angels [TBS | 10:07 PM ET]

Red Sox: You won’t find many pitchers more consistent this year than Jon Lester. Over his last 10 starts, Lester has allowed one run or less six times and Boston is 7-3 over that span. Lester hasn’t been nearly as good on the road in 2008, where five of his six losses have occurred. Overall, he’s 5-5 with a 4.09 ERA away from Fenway Park. Lester will need to buck history tonight if Boston plans on taking Game 1. In four starts against Anaheim, Lester has a lofty 7.78 ERA.

Red Sox are 19-7 in their last 26 playoff games.
Red Sox are 0-8 in the last 8 meetings.

Key Injuries - OF J.D. Drew (back) is probable.
3B Mike Lowell (hip) is questionable.

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Angels (-120, O/U 8.5): John Lackey comes limping into the postseason after his worst outing of the year against Texas, where he allowed 12 hits and 10 runs in just 2.2 innings of work. Actually, Lackey has allowed four runs or more four times in his last five starts. Things may not get much better tonight for Lackey. He’s just 3-6 in his career versus the Red Sox with a 5.54 ERA.

Angels are 3-11 in Lackey's last 14 starts against Red Sox.
The UNDER is 9-3 in LA's last 12 home games.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (Side Play of the Day)

On October 1 in Baseball History...

                              • 1903 - The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Boston Red Sox, 7-3, in the first World Series game ever played. Jimmy Sebring hit the first home run. Deacon Phillippe was the winning pitcher and Cy Young the loser.
                              • 1919 - Just before the start of the World Series, the highly favored White Sox become the betting underdogs in the best-of-nine contest. Eddie Cicotte, a 29-game winner, is driven from the hill in a five-run fourth. Cincinnati's Dutch Ruether pitches a six-hitter and has three RBI on two triples and a single for a 9-1 win.
                              • 1932 - Babe Ruth, as legend has it, called his home run against Chicago's Charlie Root in the fifth inning of Game 3 of the World Series, won by the New York Yankees, 7-5, at Wrigley Field. Ruth and Lou Gehrig each hit two homers for the Yankees.
                              • 1946 - For the first time in major league history, a playoff series to determine a league's championship was played between the St. Louis Cardinals and Brooklyn Dodgers. The Cardinals took the first game, 4-2, as Howie Pollet held the Dodgers to two hits, a homer and an RBI-single by Howie Schultz.
                              • 1950 - The Philadelphia Phillies clinched the National League pennant on Dick Sisler's three-run homer against Don Newcombe in a 4-1 victory over the Brooklyn Dodgers on the season's last day.
                              • 1961 - Roger Maris hit his 61st home run against Tracy Stallard of the Boston Red Sox at Yankee Stadium. The homer eclipsed Babe Ruth's 34-year-old single-season home run record. The Yankees won, 1-0.
                              • 1970 - The final game at Philadelphia's Connie Mack Stadium is played as the Phillies beat the Expos 2-1. The fans respond by swarming onto and destroying the field.
                              • 1978 - The Cleveland Indians beat New York, 9-2, on the last day of the season to force a one-game playoff between the Yankees and Boston. The Red Sox won their eighth straight, 5-0 over the Toronto Blue Jays.
                              • 1988 - Tony Gwynn went 2-for-3 to raise his league-leading batting average to .313 but sustained a hand injury in a 6-3 victory over the Houston Astros. Gwynn, was the first National League batting champion to win the title with an average below .320. Larry Doyle's .320 average was the lowest.
                              • 1989 - Minnesota's Kirby Puckett and San Diego's Tony Gwynn each win batting titles on the final day of the regular season. Puckett goes 2-for-5 to edge Carney Lansford .339 to .336 while Gwynn goes 3-for-4 to beat Will Clark .336 to .333.
                              • 1995 - The Rockies are the first team to make the postseason before their seventh year in existence; they also become the National League's first wild card winner following a 10-9 win over the Giants. Colorado's .535 percentage (77-67 record) is the best ever for a third-year team.
                              • 1997 - The Orioles continue their dominance over the most dominant lefthander in baseball. Baltimore bounces Randy Johnson and the Mariners in the first game of the American League Division Series. Johnson, who has a winning record against every other team in the American League, falls to 3-8 overall against the Orioles.
