    Daily Sports Roundup

    Monday, September 29

The Ravens will be looking to run their record to 3-0 on the season on Monday night when they go to Pittsburgh to play the rival Steelers. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

Baltimore is 2-0 on the year, thanks to games against struggling division rivals Cincinnati and Cleveland and an unexpected, hurricane-imposed bye in Week 2. The Ravens began the year by beating the Bengals 17-10 at home, and followed up that result by topping the Browns 28-10 at home last week. Baltimore managed to pick up an ATS win in both of those contests, while the OVER/UNDER is at 1-1 for them this year.

Pittsburgh was tagged with their first loss of the year last weekend, falling 15-6 in Philadelphia as 3.5-point underdogs. The Steelers began the campaign by thumping the Texans 38-17, and they then squeaked past the Browns 10-6 in Week 2. That puts Pittsburgh at 2-1 straight-up and 1-2 against-the-spread on the season, and only their easy victory over Houston in Week 1 has provided an OVER result for their supporters.

The Ravens and Steelers split their season series 1-1 last year, with each team winning and covering at home (in a pair of OVER results). For Monday night the oddsmakers have Pittsburgh listed as a 5-point home favorite, with the total pegged at just 34 points. Steelers RB Willie Parker will miss Monday's game with a knee injury, leaving Rashard Mendenhall as their starter. Ravens DB Samari Rolle (shoulder/neck) is OUT as well.

    Other Notable Events

There's a single baseball game on the schedule for Monday, with Gavin Floyd (16-8, 3.91 ERA) and the White Sox hosting Freddy Garcia (1-1, 4.50 ERA) and the Tigers in a makeup contest. If Chicago manages to beat Detroit in the Monday matinee they'll then play a one-game playoff against the Twins on Tuesday to decide the AL Central title.

As well, the New York Liberty and the Detroit Shock will play the third and deciding game of the WNBA's Eastern Conference Finals on Monday night (at Eastern Michigan University). The Shock rallied to avoid elimination on Sunday afternoon, with Deanna Nolan pouring in a team-high 22 points in their 64-55 win over the Liberty in Game 2.

    The Rest of the Schedule

There's nothing else on the schedule on a light Monday around the world of sports, unless you're into preseason hockey (the NHL regular season gets started Saturday).

    News from the Wire

Each of Rolle, DT Kelly Gregg (knee), S Dawan Landry (neck), and QB Troy Smith (illness) are OUT for Baltimore. WR Yamon Figurs (hamstring), LB Nick Greisen (thigh), and T Adam Terry (ankle) are QUESTIONABLE, while LB Tavares Gooden (hip), LB Ray Lewis (foot), RB Le'Ron McClain (migraine/ankle), RB Willis McGahee (eye), CB Fabian Washington (neck), and TE Daniel Wilcox (shoulder/ankle) are PROBABLE . . . Parker, DT Casey Hampton (groin), and DE Brett Keisel (calf) are OUT for Pittsburgh, while LB Donovan Woods (hamstring) is DOUBTFUL, and CB William Gay (ankle), S Troy Polamalu (quadricep), and CB Deshea Townsend (heel) are all PROBABLE.

    A Peek at the Future

The MLB playoffs and the WNBA Finals both get rolling this week, while the drivers of the Sprint Cup Series will head to Talladega for Sunday's Amp Energy 500 . . . those first NHL regular season games will take place in Europe over the weekend, with the Rangers and Lightning in Prague, and the Penguins and Senators in Stockholm . . . college football gets started again Tuesday, with Florida Atlantic at Middle Tennessee.

      Six-pack for Monday

-- Marlins knocked Mets out of playoffs on last day of season for second year in row; Florida finished 84-77 with the lowest payroll in baseball, a pretty damned good season.

-- Brewers-Phillies. Cubs-Dodgers are the NL playoff matchups.

-- Red Sox will be visiting Anaheim this week, while the AL Central winner will visit St Pete to play the Tampa Rays.

-- White Sox host Detrot Monday afternoon; if they win, they play the Twins Tuesday for the Central title.

-- Nine of college football's top 25 lost this week, with six of nine losing to unranked teams.

-- Camilo Villegas won TOUR Championship in a playoff against Sergio Garcia, after being down five shots with 11 holes to play.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an eventful football Sunday

        13) Tremendous goal line stand by the Bears in the last 4:00 Sunday night, stopping Eagles on 1-yard line, preserving a 24-20 win. Both teams finish first quarter of season at 2-2.

        12) Philly started four of their 14 drives in Chicago territory, but all they got out of it was two field goals. They miss Westbrook badly.

        11) Two-time MVP Kurt Warner played as badly as you can in the first half, as Cardinals turned ball over five times and trailed 34-0 at the half; then they scored TDs on their first five possessions of the second half, twice cutting lead to 13, but two more turnovers were too much to overcome, and Jets won a wild game, 56-35. By the end of the game, Warner's stats were huge, but he played a poor game at the start, when the outcome was still undecided.

        10) So on a day where Aaron Rodgers bruised/separated/dislocated his shoulder, depending on who you believe, Brett Favre threw six TD passes and the 2008 season took an ugly turn for the Packers.

        9) Chiefs further exposed Denver's weak defense by running for 213 yards and upsetting the Broncos 33-19.

        8) Wasn't announced until just before noon, but Carson Palmer sat out Bengals' home game with the Browns, and Cincinnati is horrible without him. Bengals lost 20-12 in a battle of winless Ohio teams. Palmer has a bad elbow, and everyone in Cincinnati has a headache.

        7) Poor Texans haven't played a home game yet; they were gutty in Jacksonville Sunday, driving to tie game at gun on long FG, but Jags came through in OT, evened their record at 2-2. Schaub was 29-40/ 307 passing, and converted nine of thirteen third downs.

        6) Brees was 23-35/363 passing, as NFL's most fun team beat 49ers 31-17, overcoming 13 penalties for 123 yards. Saints host Vikings in next week's Monday night game, good scheduling move for ESPN.

        5) Home team is now 4-0 in Falcon games, as Atlanta lost 24-9 to the Panthers in Charlotte. Ryan averaged over 10 yards per pass attempt in his two home games, but less than five yards in both road tilts.

        4) Tennessee used a 16-yard edge in field position to beat Vikings in an interconference game, 30-17; they scored three TDs on their four drives that started in Minnesota territory. AFC teams were 3-0 vs. NFC opponents Sunday, but the NFC still leads season series, 7-6.

        3) My Rams played a terrific first half, leading undefeated Buffalo at home, 14-6, but the second half was a disaster, and Bills won 31-14. Hopefully, Monday will be end of the road for Scott Linehan, and everyone can go on with their lives. Keeping him won't help anyone, and that includes Linehan. Lot of people share blame for this debacle, but the head coach is the one who bears the most responsibility.

        2) Oakland led the Chargers 15-0 in a game that wasn't nearly that close; San Diego was lucky they weren't down at least 23-0 at half, but Norv's team showed onions in second half and rallied to beat the Silver and Black, 28-18. Another 4th quarter failure by the Raiders.

        1) Jim Zorn is off to 3-1 start as boss of the Redskins; he led Skins to just their third win in last 17 visits to Dallas, 26-24. Jason Campbell actually looks calm, and credit there has to go to former QB Zorn.

          SCOREBOARD

Detroit at Chicago White Sox (2:05 p.m. EDT). The White Sox send Gavin Floyd to the mound for a makeup game against Detroit, needing a win to force a tiebreaker Tuesday against the Twins for the AL Central title. A loss would end Chicago’s season. Freddy Garcia, who won three postseason games for Chicago in 2005, takes the hill for the Tigers.

          STARS

          Sunday

          — CC Sabathia, Brewers, pitched a four-hitter on short rest, walking one in a 3-1 win over the Cubs that eventually gave Milwaukee a berth in the playoffs.

          — Wes Helms and Dan Uggla, Marlins, hit a pair of home runs in the eighth inning for a 4-2 victory that knocked the Mets out of playoff contention in the final game at Shea Stadium.

          — Mark Buehrle, White Sox, gave up one run over seven innings, striking out six in a 5-1 win over the Indians that kept Chicago in contention for the postseason.

          — Scott Baker, Twins, gave up four hits over seven sparkling innings, striking out nine in a 6-0 win over the Royals and gives Minnesota either a division title or a playoff tiebreaker against the White Sox.

          — Vernon Wells, Blue Jays, went 5-for-5 with a pair of home runs and five RBIs in his final game of the season, a 10-1 rout of the Orioles.

          — Felipe Lopez, Cardinals, went 4-for-5 with three RBIs in a 11-4 win over the Reds.

          — Tim Lincecum, Giants, matched a season-high with 13 strikeouts, allowing four hits and a run in seven innings of a 3-1 victory over the NL West champion Dodgers.

          — Randy Johnson, Diamondbacks, gave up two hits and a walk with nine strikeouts in a complete-game, 2-1 win over the Rockies. The only run he allowed was unearned.

          MONDAY MAKEUP

The White Sox (87-74) stopped a five-game losing streak with a 5-1 win over Cleveland, and remained one half-game behind division-leading Minnesota (88-74), which beat Kansas City. Chicago must play a makeup game Monday against Detroit. If the White Sox win that one, Chicago would host a tiebreaker game against the Twins on Tuesday for the AL Central title.

          CC YA IN THE PLAYOFFS

CC Sabathia pitched a four-hitter to lead Milwaukee past the Cubs and into the playoffs. His NL-leading seventh complete game came in just 17 starts after the Brewers got the big lefty in July from Cleveland. The only run he allowed was unearned after an error by first baseman Prince Fielder, and he finished with a 1.65 ERA for the Brewers. Less than an hour later, the Mets lost to the Marlins and Milwaukee was into the postseason for the first time since 1982.

          20 FOR MOOSE

Mike Mussina became the oldest pitcher to win 20 games in a season for the first time, reaching the milestone on the final day of the season. The 39-year-old Mussina (20-9), finishing his 18th major league season, allowed three hits in six shutout innings. Previously, the oldest first-time 20-game winner was Jamie Moyer, who was 38 when he went 20-6 for Seattle in 2001. Mussina, who hasn’t committed to playing next season, could be the first pitcher to retire following a 20-win season since Sandy Koufax.

          GOODBYE, SHEA

It was a gloomy end to Shea Stadium. The Mets lost 4-2 to the Marlins, missing the playoffs after another September collapse. The club brought in former greats from Tom Seaver to Dwight Gooden for closing ceremonies after the game that wound up feeling more like a funeral than a party. The team moves into neighboring Citi Field next spring.

          HOUSE CLEANING

The Tigers’ disappointing season cost two coaches their jobs. Manager Jim Leyland said Sunday that pitching coach Chuck Hernandez and bullpen coach Jeff Jones were fired. Earlier in the day, the Nationals let go bench coach Pat Corrales, base coaches Tim Tolman and Jerry Morales, bullpen coach Rick Aponte and hitting coach Lenny Harris.

          TIM TERRIFIC

Giants ace Tim Lincecum matched his career high with 13 strikeouts to finish with a majors-best 265, giving Cy Young Award voters an impressive final start to think about. Lincecum (18-5) recorded strikeouts for the first nine outs of the game—the first time that’s happened since the Cubs’ Sid Fernandez did so on July 30, 1986, at the New York Mets, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Lincecum had the most strikeouts in the majors since Randy Johnson’s 290 in 2004 for Arizona. Johan Santana, then with Minnesota, had 265 that year.

          A CHIPPER BATTING CHAMP

Chipper Jones secured his first NL batting title, walking in his only at-bat. Jones hit a career-high .364 to edge Albert Pujols and become the NL’s first switch-hitting batting champion since Terry Pendleton won in his 1991 MVP season for Atlanta.

          ERRORLESS ASTROS

The Astros set an NL record for fewest errors, committing only 67 this season. The 1999 New York Mets and 2007 Colorado Rockies held the previous NL mark of 68 errors. The Astros set a franchise record by nine—they committed 76 errors in 115 games in the strike-shortened 1994 season. For a full season, the previous record was 80, set in 2006.

          SPEAKING

“You play 161 games and today is supposed to be the last day of the year. Everybody is going home, a lot of people are going to the playoffs and here we got to play another game that matters for us and not for the other team.”—Mark Buehrle of the White Sox, whose team will play Detroit in a makeup game Monday. If the White Sox win that one, they host a tiebreaker game against Minnesota on Tuesday for the AL Central title.

“It was his game. It was his year. It was his two months. It was his game to give as long as he could possibly go.”—Brewers interim manager Dale Sveum, after CC Sabathia pitched a four-hitter on short rest to help send Milwaukee to the playoffs for the first time since 1982.

1954—Willie Mays made his famous over-the-shoulder catch of Vic Wertz’s long drive to center field and pinch-hitter Dusty Rhodes homered off Bob Lemon in the 10th inning to lead the New York Giants to a 5-2 victory over the Cleveland Indians in Game 1 of the World Series.

1963—Stan Musial ended his career by going 2-for-3 as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Cincinnati Reds, 3-2 in 14 innings at Busch Stadium.

1963—John Paciorek of the Houston Colt .45s, in his only major league appearance, went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and four runs scored against the New York Mets. A back injury ended his baseball career the next season.

1976—John Montefusco of the San Francisco Giants pitched a 9-0 no-hitter over the Braves in Atlanta.

1983—Mike Warren of the Oakland A’s pitched a no-hitter to beat the Chicago White Sox, 3-0.

1986—Minnesota’s Bert Blyleven broke Robin Roberts’ 1956 record of 46 home run pitches in a season when he gave up a two-out, third-inning homer to Cleveland rookie Jay Bell. It was the first major league pitch Bell had seen. Despite giving up two more homers, Blyleven was the winner when the Twins rallied in the eighth for a 6-5 victory.

1986—Chicago Cubs rookie Greg Maddux defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 8-3 in the City of Brotherly Love. The losing pitcher was his brother, Mike, also a rookie. It was the first time brothers faced each other as rookie pitchers.

1996—Vinny Castilla of the Colorado Rockies hit his 40th homer in a 12-3 victory at San Francisco. He combined with teammates Andres Galarraga (47 homers) and Ellis Burks (40) to form the first 40-homer trio on one team since the 1973 Atlanta Braves: Davey Johnson (43), Darrell Evans (41), Hank Aaron (40).

1998—Mo Vaughn homered twice and tied a record with seven RBIs as Boston ended a 13-game postseason skid, beating Cleveland 11-3 in the AL Divisional Playoff series opener.

2001—Seattle’s Ichiro Suzuki set the major league rookie record for hits in a season, but the Mariners fell to Oakland 8-4. Suzuki got his 234th hit, breaking the previous rookie mark set by Shoeless Joe Jackson with Cleveland in 1911.

2002—San Francisco slugger Barry Bonds, 38, became the oldest player to win a National League batting title, hitting .370. Bonds had a .582 on-base percentage, easily topping the record of .553 that Ted Williams set in 1941.

2004—Major League Baseball announced the Montreal Expos will move to Washington to begin play at RFK Stadium in the 2005 season.

2004—Bobby Cox became the ninth manager in baseball history to win 2,000 games when Atlanta scored four runs in the seventh inning and beat the New York Mets 6-3. Of the eight managers who previously reached 2,000 wins, seven are in the Hall of Fame. The lone exception is Tony La Russa, still managing the St. Louis Cardinals. Cox’s overall record was 2,000-1,530, and he has guided Atlanta to 13 straight division titles.

2007—John Maine flirted with the first no-hitter in New York Mets history before allowing an infield single to Paul Hoover with two outs in the eighth inning of a 13-0 rout of Florida. Willie Collazo and Carlos Muniz completed the one-hitter.

Detroit won three of its last four games, scoring 24 runs. White Sox lost six of their last eight games, but need a win here to force a playoff game against the Twins Tuesday. Floyd is 1-2, 5.40 in his last five starts; the White Sox won all four of his starts vs Detroit this season. Garcia is 1-1, 5.40 in two starts back from an arm injury; he has 111-77 career mark, with 82 of his 264 career starts for White Sox. Detroit's season is over after this game; it’s win or go home for Chicago, so immense pressure on them, and they haven't played well lately.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    Monday’s slumping pitcher

Gavin Floyd, Chicago White Sox (16-8, 3.91)

Gavin Floyd has been one of Chicago’s most dependable starters for most of the season, but he’s been roughed up in each of his last two starts.

He allowed three dingers and five earned runs against the lowly Royals last week and was touched for 11 hits and four more earned runs on three days rest in his last outing against the Twins.

When you look at the numbers, he has only one sold start in his last five after reeling off four quality outings before that, so maybe he’s tiring down the stretch.

Floyd can normally grind out innings if he has to, as long as he keeps the ball in the ballpark. He’s served up 30 taters already this year.

Detroit at Chicago White Sox (-215, 10)

The Chicago White Sox finally came up with a win when they needed one on Sunday to stay alive in the race for the AL Central title.

If they want to actually win the division, they'll need another on Monday. And one more on Tuesday.

The White Sox will try to force a one-game playoff for the Central crown when they play a make-up game at U.S. Cellular Field on Monday against the Detroit Tigers and Freddy Garcia, a former star in the playoffs for Chicago.

At the end of a disappointing season, the Tigers (74-87) were likely hoping not to have to make one more trip to Chicago to make up the remaining game from a rain-soaked series Sept. 12-14, and they wouldn't have if the White Sox and Minnesota Twins had been separated by more than one-half game after Sunday's play.

But Chicago (87-74) snapped a five-game losing streak with a 5-1 win over Cleveland on Sunday, remaining one-half game behind Minnesota after the Twins beat Kansas City 6-0.

The White Sox had been reeling after coughing up a 2 1/2-game lead in the division in just a few days. They were swept by the Twins at the Metrodome last week, then dropped the first two games against the Indians over the weekend.

They rebounded behind Mark Buehrle on Sunday, as the left-hander gave up one run in seven innings on three days' rest and Paul Konerko homered for the fourth time in the last three games.

If the White Sox win again on Monday, they would host Minnesota on Tuesday in a one-game playoff, the site having been determined by a coin flip earlier this month. If not, the Twins can celebrate and prepare to face Tampa Bay in an AL division series starting Thursday.

"It's up to them. It's all on their shoulders now," Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire said. "I don't have to make a pitching move. I don't have to pinch hit anybody tomorrow. It's all on (White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen's) butt, so go get 'em Ozzie and let's see what happens."
