    Daily Sports Roundup

    Sunday, September 28

The NFL stages its Week 4 on Sunday, while baseball concludes its regular-season schedule. Here's a glimpse at the action in today's edition of the Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

The Titans, Broncos, Bills, and Cowboys will all be looking to run their records to 4-0 on Sunday when they take to the field. Tennessee and Dallas are both favored at home in their games; the Titans are favored by 3 points against the Vikings, while the Cowboys will be looking to cover an 11-point spread against the Redskins. The Broncos and Bills are both road favorites; it's Denver (-10) at Kansas City, and Buffalo (-8) at St. Louis.

At the other end of the standings, the 0-3 Bengals will play host to the 0-3 Browns on Sunday afternoon. The loser of that AFC North matchup will be in a huge hole in the playoff race, and the oddsmakers have given the Bengals the 3.5-point edge to win.

Other Sunday afternoon matchups include San Francisco at New Orleans (-5), Arizona at the Jets (-1), Green Bay at Tampa Bay (-1), Atlanta at Carolina (-6.5), and Houston at Jacksonville (-7). As well, the 1-2 Chargers will be looking to get their record back to the .500 mark when they take on the 1-2 Raiders in Oakland as big 7.5-point road favorites.

Rounding out the Sunday NFL schedule will be Philadelphia at Chicago at 8:15pm ET. The Eagles are 2-1 in the tight NFC East, while the Bears have struggled to a 1-2 record on the season. And even though this game is being played at Soldier Field the Eagles have been pegged as the 3-point favorites, with the total listed at 40 points.

    Other Notable Events

The drivers of the Sprint Cup Series will hit the track at Kansas Speedway on Sunday afternoon for the Camping World RV 400 presented by Coleman. Greg Biffle has won each of the first two Chase events, and he'll be trying to make it three in a row on Sunday. Biffle and Johnson are tied for second place in the current driver standings, 10 points back of Carl Edwards. Jeff Burton and Kevin Harvick are sitting fourth and fifth.

Biffle won the series' event at Kansas last season, and he's tied with Johnson, Edwards, and Kyle Busch as the 6/1 Vegas favorite to take the checkered flag on Sunday. Tony Stewart, who won the Banquet 400 at Kansas back in 2006, is pegged at 11/1 odds to visit victory lane. Two-time Kansas champion Jeff Gordon is listed at 15/1.

    The Rest of the Schedule

The NL Wild Card berth is still in play, with the Mets and Brewers now tied in that race. Milwaukee will send CC Sabathia (10-2, 1.78 ERA in the NL) to the mound at home against the Cubs on Sunday afternoon, while Oliver Perez (10-7, 4.25 ERA) will try to pitch the Mets past the Marlins at home at the same time. If those teams are still tied at the end of the day on Sunday they'll play a one-game playoff Monday in New York.

Also still to be decided is the AL Central title, with the White Sox and Mark Buehrle (14-12, 3.87 ERA) hosting Cleveland on Sunday, and the Twins and Scott Baker (10-4, 3.59 ERA) getting a visit from Kansas City. Minnesota has a half-game lead on Chicago in the division, and they can clinch top spot with a win Sunday combined with a White Sox loss. However, if Chicago is still a half-game back after Sunday they'll play a makeup game with the Tigers on Monday. Should the Twins and White Sox be tied in the standings after that Monday contest they'll play a one-game playoff on Tuesday.

As well, the Yankees will have Mike Mussina (19-9, 3.47 ERA) trying for his 20th win of the season when they play at Fenway Park in Boston on Sunday afternoon, so they'll be pulling out all the stops to try and get him to that mark for the first time in his career. New York and Boston will actually play twice on Sunday thanks to Saturday's rainout.

The WNBA playoffs will continue on Sunday afternoon, with New York at Detroit in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals, and Los Angeles at San Antonio in Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals. New York holds a 1-0 lead in their three-game set, while San Antonio pulled out a victory on Saturday afternoon to tie up that series at 1-1.

Finally, the CFL concludes its week on Sunday with Saskatchewan at Montreal (-6.5), while the PGA Tour wraps up its playoffs on the final day of THE TOUR Championship.

    News from the Wire

Notable players listed as OUT for Sunday's NFL games heading into the weekend: Arizona DE Bert Berry (groin), Browns S Sean Jones (knee), Dallas S Roy Williams (forearm), Chiefs QB Brodie Croyle (right shoulder), Saints WR Marques Colston (thumb) and TE Jeremy Shockey (hernia), Jets K Mike Nugent (right thigh), Raiders RB Justin Fargas (groin), Rams WR Drew Bennett (foot), Buccaneers WR Joey Galloway (foot), Titans QB Vince Young (knee/hamstring), and Redskins DE Jason Taylor (calf).

    A Peek at the Future

A slow Monday in sports will be highlighted by the matchup of the Ravens and Steelers in Pittsburgh. The Steelers opened as 7-point home favorites in that contest, but that line has since fallen to just 5 points (with the total pegged at 34 points) . . . as well, there will be a Game 3 in the WNBA's Eastern Conference Finals in Detroit on Monday night if the Shock manage to knock off the Liberty in their Sunday afternoon matchup.

Saskatchewan Roughriders (8-4) at Montreal Alouettes (8-4) (-6)

Will this be a preview of next November’s Grey Cup game at the Big O?

Last week’s 40-4 beat down of the Eskimos is no proof that Montreal can now play with the big boys of the West.

The Riders are 2-11 SU in Montreal since 1996, but the Alouettes haven’t beaten Saskatchewan since October of 2006. Montreal owes a potent offense with 30 plus points in 11 of its last 12 games.

Even if the Alouettes win this one, I doubt they’ll cover the number.

            Pick: Saskatchewan

                        Streaking Starting Pitchers
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                        Sunday’s streaking and slumping pitchers

                        Streaking

James Shields, Tampa Bay Rays (14-8, 3.57 ERA)

Tampa Bay goes to its ace to finish an unforgettable regular season. Shields is 3-0 in his last five starts and has lost just one game since July. The right-handed pitcher has a 3.39 ERA over the past 10 appearances.

He has a 2-0 record and 2.42 ERA in three career starts versus Detroit. His last outing against the Tigers was a 6 1/3 inning performance in which he allowed just two runs for a no decision.

Johan Santana, New York Mets (15-7, 2.64 ERA)

This is why New York shelled out the big buck for Santana. The future HoF hurler has been victorious in six of his last 10 starts down the stretch and posts a 2.14 ERA during this span.

Santana is stellar at home with five wins in his last eight starts in the Big Apple. He is 2-0 with a 3.21 ERA against the Fish this season.

                        Slumping

Jeremy Gutherie, Baltimore Orioles (10-11, 3.57 ERA)

The O’s righty has dropped three straight decisions after rolling out four in a row. Gutherie recent outing was a rough one in which he allowed seven runs in three innings. His recent troubles could be blamed on a bum throwing shoulder.

Gutherie is 1-1 with a 1.83 ERA in three starts versus Toronto this year. His last appearance against the Jays was a six-hit, two-run effort in just under six innings of work that Baltimore’s bullpen blew in the later innings.

Ross Ohlendorf, Pittsburgh Pirates (1-4, 6.83 ERA)

Ohlendorf’s career as a starter isn’t getting off on the right foot. The right hander has lost his last three starts and has a 7.50 ERA in his four trips to the mound. The team sees big things for the youngster, but not for this season.

Tampa Bay at Detroit (+112, 9)

Already assured of the best regular season in the franchise's 11-year existence, the last thing the Tampa Bay Rays want is a losing streak heading into their historic playoff run.

The Rays try to enter the postseason with a victory, hoping to salvage the finale of their four-game road series with the Detroit Tigers on Sunday.

It's already been a milestone year for Tampa Bay (96-85), which clinched its first postseason berth on Sept. 20, then added another accomplishment by securing the AL East title when Boston lost to the New York Yankees on Friday. It was the first time a club other than Boston and New York won the division since Baltimore in 1997.

However, less than 24 hours after celebrating that accolade, Tampa Bay suffered a 4-3 loss to Detroit (74-86). The Rays completed a three-game home sweep of the Tigers at the start of August, but have dropped all three contests of the current series against them.

"We wanted to win (Saturday) - there's never a game where you feel good walking back after a loss - but clinching meant that I could manage this more like a spring-training game," Rays manager Joe Maddon said.

Among Madden's decisions, starters B.J. Upton, Akinori Iwamura and Carlos Pena were rested, while starter Matt Garza came out after five innings and 74 pitches

                          Pick: Tampa Bay

                          L.A. Dodgers at San Francisco (-190, 7)

The Los Angeles Dodgers will face some tough pitchers in the postseason. A matchup with Tim Lincecum gives them an ideal tune-up.

In their final regular-season game, the Dodgers face a strong NL Cy Young Award candidate when they conclude a three-game set with the San Francisco Giants on Sunday.

The NL West champion Dodgers (84-77) have often struggled at the plate this season, ranking near the bottom of the majors with 4.4 runs per game, and they'll be seeing plenty of quality starters in the playoffs. Cole Hamels of NL East champion Philadelphia will be in the postseason along with the Central-winning Chicago Cubs' Ryan Dempster.

Meanwhile, the eventual winner of NL wild card will boast its own stopper. Milwaukee and CC Sabathia are tied with the New York Mets and Johan Santana for the wild card. Both of those pitchers are Cy Young Award candidates, as is Lincecum (17-5, 2.66 ERA).

Facing San Francisco's ace just prior to the postseason ace gives Los Angeles an excellent chance to gear up for what's ahead. Lincecum is just behind Santana (16-7, 2.53) for the NL ERA lead.

Lincecum may have had a better chance to beat out Santana in that category if not for his last start, which was his worst of the season. He gave up six runs and six hits in 4 1-3 innings as San Francisco (71-90) lost 9-4 to Colorado on Tuesday night.

But the 24-year-old right-hander struck out nine to set the Giants single-season record with 252 strikeouts. The Giants discussed shutting down Lincecum after that start, but he didn't want to end his spectacular season with a frustrating loss.

                          Pick: over
