    Daily Sports Roundup

    Saturday, September 27

No. 2 Oklahoma will get a visit from No. 24 TCU in one of the top matchups on the college football schedule for Saturday. Here's a look in today's Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

The No. 2 Sooners could start tasting that top spot in the rankings after No. 1 USC was shocked by Oregon State on Thursday night. To get there, though, they'll have to take care of business against No. 24 TCU on Saturday night. Despite sitting in the Top 25 the Horned Frogs aren't getting much love from oddsmakers or bettors in this matchup; they're pegged as big 18.5-point underdogs (with the total set at 54.5).

Oklahoma could have competition for that No. 1 ranking, though, from No. 3 Georgia. The Bulldogs have a tough game on tap against No. 8 Alabama on Saturday night, but if they are impressive enough in a win they could inherit top spot in the polls from the Trojans. Georgia is listed as a 6.5-point favorite, with the total pegged at 44.5 points.

There is one other matchup of ranked teams on Saturday, and that's No. 22 Illinois vs. No. 12 Penn State. The Nittany Lions are 15.5-point faves, with the total at 55.5 points.

    Other Notable Events

Other college football games involving ranked teams on Saturday: Mississippi at No. 4 Florida (-22), Mississippi State at No. 5 LSU (-25), Arkansas at No. 7 Texas (-27), No. 9 Wisconsin (-6) at Michigan, No. 13 South Florida (-9.5) at N.C. State, Minnesota at No. 14 Ohio State (-19.5), Tennessee at No. 15 Auburn (-6.5), Navy at No. 16 Wake Forest (-16), Weber State at No. 17 Utah (no line), Maryland at No. 20 Clemson (-11), Houston at No. 23 East Carolina (-10.5), and No. 25 Fresno State (-7.5) at UCLA.

The Twins will send Glen Perkins (12-4, 4.50 ERA) to the mound on Saturday afternoon against the Royals and Gil Meche (13-11, 4.05 ERA), while the White Sox will go with Javier Vazquez (12-15, 4.46 ERA) vs. the Indians' Zach Jackson (1-3, 6.04 ERA) on Saturday night as the teams continue to jockey for top spot in the AL Central division.

Over in the National League the teams still looking to clinch playoff spots will all be at home on Saturday afternoon, with the Mets hosting Florida, the Phillies hosting Washington, and the Brewers getting another visit from the NL Central champion Cubs.

Also, the third round of THE TOUR Championship will get underway Saturday morning.

    The Rest of the Schedule

Rounding out the American League slate for Saturday: the Yankees at Boston, Tampa Bay at Detroit, Oakland at Seattle, Toronto at Baltimore, and Texas at the Angels. Meanwhile, the other National League games are Atlanta at Houston, Cincinnati at St. Louis, Colorado at Arizona, the Dodgers at San Francisco, and Pittsburgh at San Diego.

The Western Conference Finals continue in the WNBA on Saturday afternoon, with Los Angeles at San Antonio. The Sparks won Game 1 of the series at home on Thursday night 85-70 behind a 22-point performance from Lisa Leslie. Ann Wauters led the Silver Stars with 18 points. San Antonio is pegged as a 3.5-point home favorite for Game 2.

Finally, the Canadian Football League has two games on its Saturday schedule: Calgary (-9.5) at Toronto at 7pm ET, and Hamilton at British Columbia (-12.5) at 10pm .

    News from the Wire

Donovan McNabb (chest), Carson Palmer (elbow), and Brett Favre (ankle) are all expected to start for their respective teams on Sunday . . . Buccaneers wide receiver Joey Galloway (foot) is not expected to be able to play this weekend . . Ravens running back Willis McGahee is still having trouble seeing, and might have to miss the team's game on Monday night . . . Eagles RB Brian Westbrook (ankle) is questionable as well.

    A Peek at the Future

Sunday is the last day of both baseball's regular season and the PGA Tour's FedExCup playoffs . . . the WNBA playoffs continue on Sunday, with New York at Detroit and Los Angeles at San Antonio (if necessary) . . . the Sprint Cup Series stages the Camping World RV 400 presented by Coleman at Kansas Speedway on Sunday . . . and, of course, there is plenty of NFL on Sunday, including Philly at Chicago at 8:15pm ET.

Calgary Stampeders (8-4) at Toronto Argonauts (4-8) (+10)

There are two burning questions in Toronto: does head coach Don Matthews still have the magic touch to turn things around and will the Argos win another game before the season’s end?

The coaching change obviously wasn’t enough, and the problems run much deeper on a team that lacks unity, motivation and work ethic.

It’s quite a different story in Calgary where Henry Burris is doing wonders and coach John Hufnagel is fully in control of his Stampeders.

Last week the Stampeders rolled over the Argos, with a 34-4 win. Burris had two touchdown passes with 21 passes completed in 34 attempts for 241 passing gains.

The Stampeders have not won at Rogers Centre in their last seven visits to Toronto. Their last victory in front of Argos fans goes back all the way to September 28th 2000.

Don’t count on the streak to continue. Expect Calgary to slaughter the Argos.

            Pick: Calgary

Hamilton Tiger Cats (2-10) at British Columbia Lions (7-5) (-12)

Running back Kenton Keith is back in the CFL after a stint with the Indianapolis Colts in the NFL. Keith will likely be the new key in the Tiger Cats rushing offence since superstar Jesse Lumsden keeps falling to injuries.

Hamilton lost a close one last week, 25-23 to Winnipeg. A pair of quarterbacks guided the Tiger Cats offence: Quinton Porter had 183 yards passing with a TD while Casey Printers gained 110 yards with another touchdown.

The Lions are red hot and have won three-straight games including an upset win last week.

The Ti-Cats have been quite resilient in their last two visits to Vancouver and the eight last eight head-to-head matchups have gone under the total. The Lions will most likely win straight up…but I doubt they will cover the spread.

            Pick: Hamilton

            Sunday, September 28

Saskatchewan Roughriders (8-4) at Montreal Alouettes (8-4) (-6)

Will this be a preview of next November’s Grey Cup game at the Big O?

Last week’s 40-4 beat down of the Eskimos is no proof that Montreal can now play with the big boys of the West.

The Riders are 2-11 SU in Montreal since 1996, but the Alouettes haven’t beaten Saskatchewan since October of 2006. Montreal owes a potent offense with 30 plus points in 11 of its last 12 games.

Even if the Alouettes win this one, I doubt they’ll cover the number.

            Pick: Saskatchewan

                Baseball playoff scenarios
                --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Baseball playoff scenarios (records through Friday):

                AL Central

If the Chicago White Sox (86-73) and Minnesota Twins (87-73) are still within a half-game of each other after play is completed Sunday, Chicago must make up a rainout against the Detroit Tigers on Monday. If the White Sox and Twins finish with the same record, they would play a tiebreaker game Tuesday in Chicago.

                NL East

If the New York Mets (88-72) and Philadelphia Phillies (90-70) finish with the same record and both have clinched a playoff spot, the Mets win the division and the Phillies are the wild card. If the Mets and Phillies finish with the same record and the Milwaukee Brewers (89-71) win the wild card, the Mets and Phillies would play at Philadelphia in a tiebreaker.

                NL Wild Card

In the event New York or Philadelphia ties for the wild card and cannot win the division, they would host Milwaukee in a tiebreaker.

                Three teams with same record

In the event New York, Philadelphia and Milwaukee finish with the same record, the Mets and Phillies would play a tiebreaker at Philadelphia for the division title. The loser of that game would then play a wild-card tiebreaker against the Brewers.

Major League Baseball – Streaking Pitchers

                    MLB

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                    Streaking Starting Pitchers
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    Saturday’s streaking and slumping pitchers

                    Streaking

Jamie Moyer, Philadelphia Phillies (15-7, 3.78 ERA)

Ole Man Moyer is looking like a 25-year-old to close out the season. He’s undefeated in his last nine starts and hasn’t dropped a contest since the beginning of August. Since then, the veteran lefty has recorded five wins and posts an ERA of 3.77.

Moyer is 2-0 versus Washington with a 2.82 ERA over four starts this season.

Brandon Webb, Arizona Diamondbacks (22-7, 3.24 ERA)

Webb has been his untouchable self over his last three trips to the hill. The sinker baller has won all three appearances and carries a 1.63 ERA during the streak. The Diamondbacks’ playoff hopes were spoiled after their third-straight loss Thursday.

Webb goes for win No. 23 against the Rockies. He is 3-0 with a 2.42 ERA against Colorado this season.

                    Slumping

                    Todd Wellemeyer, St. Louis Cardinals
                    (12-9, 3.69 ERA)

Like most Cardinals pitchers, Wellemeyer has to be tired of the lack of run support. The right hander collected his third-straight loss and fifth in his last six starts in a 4-2 defeat to the D-backs. He went six innings and gave up just three runs, which was the same result in his previous start. That game also ended in a loss for Wellemeyer, who was given a goose egg from St. Louis’ bats.

He has a respectable 3.31 ERA during this recent skid. Wellemeyer is winless in two starts against the Reds this year. He is 0-2 with a 5.25 ERA in those games.

Matt Cain, San Francisco Giants (8-13, 3.80 ERA)

Cain is another pitcher feeling the frustration from lack of run support. The Giants righty hasn’t recorded a win since the middle of August and is 0-4 in his last six starts. San Francisco let down Cain again in his most recent appearance.

The righty pitched six shutout innings against Los Angeles but did not get the W for his efforts after the Giants failed to record a single run for Cain for the eighth time this season. He gets another crack at the Dodgers Saturday. He is 0-2 with 2.84 ERA in five starts versus their rivals this season.

Chicago Cubs at Milwaukee Brewers (-155, 8 ½)

Ben Sheets is ready to return to the mound just in time to possibly help the Milwaukee Brewers clinch their first postseason berth in 26 years.

Plagued by a sore elbow, the All-Star is scheduled to start Saturday afternoon for the wild-card leading Brewers, who try for a sixth consecutive victory as they continue their home series with the playoff-bound Chicago Cubs.

Milwaukee (89-71) beat Chicago 5-1 on Friday to take a one-game lead with two remaining in the NL wild-card race over the New York Mets, who lost to Florida earlier in the evening. The Brewers are 5-0 since dropping 15 of 19 to fall out of the wild-card lead that reached 5 1/2 games at one point.

If the struggling Mets lose to the Marlins in a game slated to start approximately three hours prior to this contest, a Brewers' victory over the NL Central champion Cubs (96-63) would give Milwaukee the wild card and secure its first playoff appearance since reaching the World Series in 1982.

"It's a good feeling when you have destiny in your hands," said Brewers interim manager Dale Sveum, who is 6-4 since replacing the fired Ned Yost. "We don't have to chase anybody, we're not tied, we're not anything. It's in our hands now."

Milwaukee turns to Sheets (13-8, 2.98 ERA), who hasn't pitched since leaving after two innings due to elbow soreness in a 6-2 victory over Chicago on Sept. 17.

The All-Star Game starter threw 20 pitches in the bullpen Thursday and said he felt ready to go.

"For him to look you straight in the face and say, 'I feel fine,' that's good enough for me," Sveum said. "He's one of the best pitchers in baseball when he's healthy."

After getting off to a strong start, the right-hander is 3-5 with a 3.25 ERA in his last 10 starts and is 1-1 with a 4.82 ERA in four outings versus Chicago in 2008.

                      Pick: Brewers

Cleveland Indians at Chicago White Sox (-200, 9 ½)

Poor pitching is largely to blame for the Chicago White Sox falling out of first place in the AL Central. Putting Javier Vazquez on the mound may not help matters.

After missing a chance to move back into first in the division, the White Sox hope Vazquez can solve his recent woes despite pitching on three days' rest against the Cleveland Indians on Saturday night in the middle game of the teams' series.

Chicago (86-73), which dropped three straight at Minnesota to lose the division lead to the Twins, is trying to regroup at U.S. Cellular Field in its final regular-season series. The White Sox lost 11-8 to the Indians (80-80) on Friday night, missing a chance to reclaim the top spot in the Central.

The White Sox have posted a 7.79 ERA and a .315 opponents batting average over their last four games, walking 15 in 34 2-3 innings.

Vazquez (12-15, 4.46 ERA) started the first game of that stretch, allowing five runs and seven hits in four innings as Chicago lost 9-3 to Minnesota on Tuesday. He has lost two straight starts, surrendering 12 runs - 11 earned - while lasting 7 2-3 innings.

                      Pick: Indians
