    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, September 23

The battle for the AL Central crown heats up on Tuesday, and those that don't care about baseball will be reviewing Week 4 NFL lines. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

The Cowboys are now the favorites to win the Super Bowl at many sportsbooks, thanks to their strong start to the season and the middling-to-poor results so far for the Patriots, Colts, and Chargers. Dallas will look to stay unbeaten this weekend when they host the Redskins; the line on that game opened with the Cowboys favored by 10.5 points.

There are just five other unbeaten teams around the league heading into Week 4: Buffalo, Baltimore, Tennessee, Denver, and the Giants. The Bills opened as 9.5-point road favorites against the Rams, while the Titans were set as 3-point home favorites versus the Vikings, and the Broncos as 9.5-point road favorites against the Chiefs. The Giants have a bye in Week 4, and the Ravens will play in Pittsburgh on Monday night.

    Other Notable Events

If the Twins are going to finish atop the AL Central they're going to have to win their home series against the White Sox, which begins on Tuesday. Minnesota is 2.5 games back of Chicago in the standings right now, and they'll send Scott Baker (9-4, 3.69 ERA) to the mound on Tuesday. Chicago counters with Javier Vazquez (12-14, 4.32 ERA).

The Red Sox will send Tim Wakefield (9-11, 4.18 ERA) to the mound on Tuesday as they try to beat the Indians and Cliff Lee (22-2, 2.41) and make a move on the Rays for first place in the AL East. Tampa Bay will be playing a doubleheader in Baltimore.

Finally, the Phillies will be looking to reduce their magic number in the NL East on Tuesday with Cole Hamels (14-9, 3.10 ERA) taking on Atlanta's Mike Hampton (2-3, 5.05 ERA). Their competition for top spot, the Mets, will be sending Johan Santana (14-7, 2.65 ERA) to the mound at home against the Cubs' Rich Harden (10-2, 2.03 ERA).

    The Rest of the Schedule

The Brewers will be looking to stay in the National League Wild Card hunt with a win versus the Pirates in Milwaukee on Tuesday night. Rounding out the NL schedule: Florida at Washington, Cincinnati at Houston, Arizona at St. Louis, San Diego at the Dodgers, and Colorado at San Francisco.

Other games in the American League on Tuesday: Kansas City at Detroit, the Yankees at Toronto, Oakland at Texas, and the Angels at Seattle.

Finally, there are two Game 3's on the WNBA's schedule for Tuesday, with Indiana at Detroit and Los Angeles at Seattle. The conference finals will start later this week.

    News from the Wire

The Eagles managed to beat the Steelers on Sunday afternoon, but star running back Brian Westbrook suffered an ankle injury; his status and practice time will be something to watch this week . . . Browns quarterback Derek Anderson was picked off three times in the team's loss to the Ravens on Sunday, and he risks losing his job to backup Brady Quinn . . . Lions quarterback Jon Kitna sprained his knee in the team's Sunday loss.

    A Peek at the Future

The White Sox/Twins matchup on Wednesday is scheduled to have a pitching matchup of Mark Buehrle (14-11, 3.87 ERA) vs. Nick Blackburn (10-10, 4.15 ERA) . . . early college football games this week include No. 1 USC at Oregon State and SMU at Tulane on Thursday, and Connecticut at Louisville on Friday . . . the PGA Tour wraps up its playoffs with The TOUR Championship in Atlanta beginning on Thursday.

      Six-pack for Tuesday

Six countries with highest per capita beer consumption (thanks to cnbc.com for this knowledge)

      6) United Kingdom, 99 liters per person-- If it rained every day in your world, you'd drink a lot, too........

      5) Austria, 108.3-- 50.8% of the men in Austria are overweight; only 20.3% of the women are.

      4) Australia, 109.9-- Guy named Bob Hawke once set record when he scarfed down 2.5 pints of beer in 11 seconds. Hawke went on to become Prime Minister of Australia.

      3) Germany, 115.8-- The first Oktoberfest was actually a wedding celebration back in 1810.

      2) Ireland, 131.1-- Some Irish believe a good hangover cure is being buried up to your neck in moist river sand. I would disagree.

      1) Czech Republic, 156.9-- First country with a beer museum; if you open a museum just for beer, thats saying a lot.

Tuesday's List of 13: Our NFL List of 13........

        13) Chargers-- Norv Turner was Dan Fouts' backup QB at Oregon. Interesting to see if banged-up Bolts can regroup after 0-2 start.

        12) Cardinals-- Arizona has back/back games on east coast, so they didn't go home, are staying on the east coast all week.

        11) Packers-- GM Ted Thompson has to be sleeping very well, in light of the fine start Aaron Rodgers has had.

        10) Ravens-- Because of Hurricane Ike, Joe Flacco's first NFL road start will be on a Monday night at Heinz Field against the Steelers. Five of next seven Baltimore games are on foreign soil.

        9) Saints-- Not surprisingly, Jeremy Shockey is hurt already, but the Saints have ton of offensive talent, are lot of fun to watch. Chargers once had both Brees and Rivers-- they couldn't lose on that decision.

        8) Broncos-- What an inspiration Jay Cutler must be to kids with any type of diabetes; he is point guard of the NFL's best offense so far, but they almost lost last two games, after leading both 21-3 early. .

        7) Bucs-- Brian Greise turned into Bobby Layne late Sunday, and got revenge on his old team. Bob Greise once threw 11 passes in a Super Bowl win; Tampa threw 23 passes in a row at one point Sunday.

        6) Steelers-- Coach Tomlin flunked management test Sunday; looks like Big Ben will go through whole year with bum shoulder. Game with Ravens Monday now looms as a very big one.

        5) Bills-- When you gut out a win on day where you don't have your best stuff, thats the mark of playoff team. Special teams coach April gets shot at the team that fired him this week-- Bills go to St Louis.

        4) Cowboys-- Memo to TV announcers/writers-- You're not a great NFL quarterback until you win at least one playoff game. Right now, Tony Romo is the NFL's Mr September, and nothing more.

        3) Titans-- Quarterbacks seem to have an evolution process; prospect then star, then down period where you lose your job, then rebirth in late career, and if you hang in, you can be a star again. Kerry Collins is going through that right now.

        2) Eagles-- Need Westbrook healthy, but McNabb is playing really well, and Johnson's defense pummeled Roethlisberger Sunday.

        1) Giants-- Defending champs are best til beaten; now they have the bye week. Cincinnati game was lackluster effort, but like Bills, they came through when it counted most.

              SCOREBOARD

              Tuesday, September 23

Chicago White Sox at Minnesota Twins (8:10 p.m. EDT). The top two teams in the AL Central begin a three-game series. Javier Vazquez (12-14, 4.32) will open for the White Sox against Minnesota's Scott Baker (9-4, 3.69).

              STARS

              Monday

              — Jason Marquis, Cubs, became the second pitcher to hit a grand slam against the Mets this season, and the Cubs clinched home-field advantage throughout the NL playoffs with a 9-5 victory.

              — Pat Burrell, Phillies, hit a three-run home run in the eighth inning and Philadelphia beat Atlanta 6-2 to move 2 1/2 games ahead of New York in the NL East.

              — Stephen Drew, Diamondbacks, fell a triple shy of hitting for the cycle against the Cardinals for the second time in three weeks in Arizona’s 4-2 win over St. Louis.

              — Ervin Santana, Angels, struck out nine and allowed five hits in eight innings and Los Angeles beat Seattle 2-1.

              ROTATION

The Cubs adjusted their pitching rotation this week to prepare for the first round of the playoffs. The NL Central champions pushed Rich Harden back a couple of days to Thursday and bumped Ted Lilly to the weekend series at Milwaukee. That means Chicago’s top four starters, Carlos Zambrano, Harden, Ryan Dempster and Lilly, each will get one tuneup start before the regular season ends. Manager Lou Piniella wouldn’t commit to a starter for Game 1 of the division series Oct. 1 at Wrigley Field, at least partly because Chicago’s opponent hasn’t been determined yet.

              RE-CYCLING

Three weeks after hitting for the cycle against Cardinals right-hander Joe Pineiro, Stephen Drew came within a triple of another against Todd Wellemeyer and drove in two runs in Arizona’s 4-2 win over St. Louis. Drew is 10-for-18 against the Cardinals with two homers and three RBIs, including a fourth-inning RBI double that put the Diamondbacks ahead 2-1 and his 20th homer in the sixth for a 3-1 lead.

              SLAMMED

Jason Marquis became the second pitcher to hit a grand slam against the Mets this season, and the Cubs clinched home-field advantage throughout the NL playoffs with a 9-5 victory that damaged New York’s postseason chances. Marquis connected off Niese in a six-run fourth, snapping a 2-all tie with his fifth career homer and second this season. Seattle pitcher Felix Hernandez also cracked a grand slam at Shea Stadium this year, on June 23 off Johan Santana.

              ANOTHER SAVE

Francisco Rodriguez pitched a perfect ninth inning for his 61st save in 68 chances and the Angels beat the Mariners 2-1. Rodriguez set the major league record for saves in a season on Sept. 13, surpassing Bobby Thigpen’s mark of 57 from 1990.

              ECK RETURNS

Cardinals manager Tony La Russa applauded and exchanged salutes with 2006 World Series MVP David Eckstein while the Diamondbacks’ second baseman was getting a lengthy ovation before his first at-bat in the second inning. La Russa stepped near the front steps of the dugout, making it easy for Eckstein to see him. Eckstein said he was saluting everyone in the dugout. “I wanted to make sure I thanked them, from me and my family,” Eckstein said.

              NO HITS ALLOWED

Orioles starter Brian Bass pitched 4 2-3 innings of hitless ball but was taken out after walking three straight batters in the fifth inning. His pitching line was rather unique: 4 2-3 innings, two runs, no hits and four walks. Bass retired the first 11 batters before Pena drew a fourth-inning walk. In the fifth, Bass walked Gabe Gross with two outs, then threw a wild pitch before issuing an intentional walk to Hinske. After Bass walked Bartlett on a 3-2 pitch, manager Dave Trembley brought in Randor Bierd.

              MISSED OPPORTUNITIES

Indians closer Jensen Lewis struck out Jed Lowrie with runners on second and third in the ninth inning, preserving the Indians’ 4-3 win over the Red Sox, who wasted chances in three of the last four innings. They lost a run when a ball hit an umpire, missing a three-run homer when Kevin Youkilis’ drive hit the left-field wall a few feet from the top and stranding two runners in the ninth when Lewis earned his 12th save in 13 chances.

              ‘PEN MIGHTIER

Brad Ziegler gave up a rare run, a home run to Hank Blalock in the ninth inning but the Athletics beat the Rangers 4-3 in 11 innings. Ziegler came into the game with a microscopic 0.78 ERA in his first 45 appearances. Meanwhile, teammate Joey Devine pitched a scoreless eighth for his 23rd consecutive appearance (22 2-3 innings) without allowing an earned run. His ERA is 0.60.

              SPEAKING

“It has nothing to do with being tight. It has nothing to do with last year. It has to do with we’re struggling. We need to just look at the big picture. There’s no need to panic. Everything we want to accomplish is right out there for our grabbing and right out there in front of us.”—Mets third baseman David Wright after New York dropped its third straight, 9-5 to the Cubs.

              SEASONS

              Sept. 23

1908-In a crucial game with the Chicago Cubs, Fred Merkle of the New York Giants failed to touch second base as the apparent winning run crossed home plate. This resulted in a great dispute and the game was eventually declared a tie and played over on Oct. 8 when the Cubs and Giants ended the season in a tie.

1952-The Brooklyn Dodgers clinched the NL title, the first time since 1948 that the pennant wasn't decided in the season's final game.

1957-Hank Aaron's 11th-inning homer gave the Milwaukee Braves a 4-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals and the NL pennant. It was the first time since 1950 that a New York team hadn't finished first.

1979-Lou Brock stole base No. 938, breaking Billy Hamilton's record, as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Mets 7-4 in 10 innings.

1983-Steve Carlton of Philadelphia recorded his 300th career victory with a 6-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium.

1984-The Detroit Tigers beat the New York Yankees 4-1, making Sparky Anderson the first manager to win more than 100 games in each league.

1986-Rookie left-hander Jim Deshaies set a major league record by striking out eight batters to start the game and finished with a two-hitter and 10 strikeouts to lead the Houston Astros past the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-0.

1988-Jose Canseco became the first major leaguer to hit 40 homers and steal 40 bases in one season as the Oakland Athletics beat the Milwaukee Brewers 9-8 in 14 innings. Canseco hit his 41st homer and stole two bases, giving him 40 for the season.

1992-Bip Roberts tied the NL record with his 10th consecutive hit, then grounded out against Pedro Astacio to end his streak in the Cincinnati Reds' game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

1998-Houston's Craig Biggio became the second player this century to have 50 steals and 50 doubles in a season, joining Hall of Famer Tris Speaker. Biggio, with 51 doubles, singled for his second hit of the game and easily stole his 50th base with two outs in the sixth.

2000-Rafael Palmeiro homered in Texas' 15-4 loss to Anaheim, becoming the 32nd player to hit 400 home runs.

2001-Alex Rodriguez hit his 48th home run, breaking Ernie Banks' major league record for shortstops and lifting Texas to a 5-2 win over Anaheim.

2001-Sammy Sosa became the first player to hit three home runs in a game three times in a season, but Moises Alou's two-run shot rallied Houston to a 7-6 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

2004-Greg Maddux picked up his 15th win of the season in Chicago?s 6-3 victory over Pittsburgh. Maddux reached 15 wins for a record 17th consecutive season. He surpassed Cy Young's record of 15 consecutive 15-win seasons in 2003.

2006-Barry Bonds hit his 734th career home run in San Francisco's 10-8 loss to Milwaukee, breaking Hank Aaron's NL record.

Today's birthdays: Matt Kemp 24; Jeff Cirillo 39.

Major League Baseball – Streaking Pitchers

                      MLB

                      Tuesday, September 23

                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                      Streaking Starting Pitchers
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                      Tuesday’s streaking and slumping pitchers

                      Streaking

Cliff Lee, Cleveland Indians (22-2, 2.41 ERA)

The AL Cy Young favorite hasn't dropped a decision since the Dark Knight hit movie theatres. Lee is 11-0 with a 2.40 ERA in his last 13 starts and could record win No. 23 in Fenway Tuesday - where he is 1-1 with a 5.51 ERA in three career starts in Boston.

The southpaw hasn't faced the Red Sox this year, but has a 2-3 career mark against them.

Rich Harden, Chicago Cubs (10-2, 2.03 ERA)

The Cubbies have clinched the NL Central but don't expect them to slow down heading into October. Harden is one of the strongest arms behind their success. The Canuck right-hander is 5-1 in his last 10 trips to the hill and has only allowed five earned runs over the past six games.

Chicago has won in each of Harden's previous eight starts and is 2-0 versus the Mets this season. Harden has never faced New York in his six-year career.

                      Slumping

Jeff Karstens, Pittsburgh Pirates (2-6, 4.37 ERA)

Karstens has been the touch of death for bettors wanting to back the Bucs. The right-handed pitcher has lost six straight appearances with all but one of those coming at home.

Karstens takes the bump in Milwaukee Tuesday. He allowed three runs in just over six innings during his last start against the Brewers and carries a 6.52 ERA during this skid into Tuesday's matchup.

Shairon Martis, Washington Nationals (0-3, 6.23 ERA)

The Nats' fresh-faced hurler was smacked for six earned runs in just three innings versus the Mets in his last start. Martis' previous two appearances were more respectable but still earned losses for the righty.

Martis is having trouble getting the reigns on his fastball and now faces the National League's second-best home run hitting team.

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cleveland Indians at Boston Red Sox (-115,9)

The Red Sox try to prevent Cleveland's Cliff Lee from recording his 23rd win while hoping to secure a spot in the postseason one way or another as they continue their home series with the Indians on Tuesday night.

Boston (91-65) had the chance to clinch a spot in the AL playoffs Monday alongside Los Angeles and Tampa Bay, but fell 4-3 to the Indians (79-77), who have won seven in a row. A victory Tuesday or a loss by the New York Yankees at Toronto, would eliminate the Yankees and send the Red Sox back to the postseason for the fifth time in six years as they look for a second straight World Series title.

The Red Sox, who trail the Rays by 2 1/2 in the AL East but own a comfortable lead in the wild-card race, now must deal with Lee (22-2, 2.41 ERA), who looks to become baseball's first 23-game winner since Barry Zito went 23-5 for Oakland in 2002.

Lee allowed three earned runs and 10 hits in 6 1-3 innings, but didn't factor in the decision of a 6-4 win over Minnesota on Wednesday after winning his previous eight starts. Lee is still 11-0 with a 2.40 ERA in his last 13 starts since losing to the Twins on July 6.

Boston sends Tim Wakefield (9-11, 4.18) to the mound after he allowed six runs and six hits in 2 1-3 innings of a 10-3 loss at Tampa Bay on Wednesday for his third defeat in four games.

"It is what it is," Wakefield told Boston's official Web site. "Our offense scored two runs in the first and I gave up the lead. It's one of those weird things. I just didn't make the right pitches at the right time."

Cincinnati Reds at Houston Astros (-110, 8 1/2)

The last time the Houston Astros played at home, they were the hottest team in baseball, knocking on the door in the NL wild card race thanks to a torrid six-week stretch.

But after a hurricane, a no-hitter and a crippling road trip, the Astros will return to Minute Maid Park likely to just play out the string, starting with Tuesday's series opener against Cincinnati.

Earlier this month, Houston (82-73) had risen from obscurity to win 14 of 15 at one point and move within two games of the wild-card lead. From Aug. 1 to Sept. 11, the club went 30-10 - easily the best record in baseball over that span.

They have to like their chances in the first three, having beaten the Reds (72-83) in 10 of the teams' 12 meetings this season.

Houston's Wandy Rodriguez took one of the two losses against Cincinnati on July 30 after allowing six runs in 4 2-3 innings of a 9-5 defeat, but the right-hander bounced back with two strong outings against the Reds in August. He beat them by allowing two runs in 6 2-3 innings of a 13-4 victory on Aug. 10, then struck out 10 in seven innings while allowing one run and three hits during a no-decision on Aug. 26.

Rodriguez (8-6, 3.73 ERA) will pitch Tuesday for the first time since Sept. 7, when he departed after one inning due to an oblique strain. Counting that start, he's 1-0 with a 0.66 ERA in his last three outings.

He'll face Edinson Volquez, who has gone a season-high four starts without a victory. Volquez (16-6, 3.29) seemed to be in contention for the NL Cy Young Award for much of his first season with the Reds, but those hopes have dimmed as he's gone 0-1 with a 4.91 ERA in September.

                        Pick: Reds
