    Best games of 2008

    Sept. 27

John Parker Wilson has yet to beat Georgia while a starter at Alabama.

Tennessee at Auburn: The Vols are 12-0 after Florida in regular season games last 12 seasons.

Wisconsin at Michigan: The Rich Rod infiltration of the Big Ten continues. Good-old pro-style vs. new-fangled spread option.

Virginia Tech at Nebraska: If the Huskers are going to be any good at all, they have to win this game. Virginia Tech's defense will be good enough to hug out its differences with Nebraska quarterback Joe Ganz.

TCU at Oklahoma: Oklahoma is reportedly concerned about TCU spies after the Sooners lost to the Horned Frogs in 2005. OU assistants are being issued night vision goggles for practice after the sun goes down.

Fresno State at UCLA: This ends a brutal non-conference schedule for Fresno. If the Bulldogs can get through Rutgers, Wisconsin and Toledo, they could be talking Orange Bowl by this point.

Alabama at Georgia: If Saban has his way, this game will be played in a cone of silence. No pesky spectators or media to get in the way of his mission. The Dawgs have won three in a row over the Tide, the last in overtime.

    Oct. 4

Ohio State at Wisconsin: Might be the Big Ten Game of the Year. Of course, it doesn't take much to earn that label. Wisconsin led in the third quarter at Columbus last year before losing by 21.

Missouri at Nebraska: The last time Missouri won in Lincoln, Central State (Ohio) University's AD played in the game. That would be one Kellen Winslow in 1978.

Oregon at USC: The Ducks treated USC's Mark Sanchez like beaver road kill on I-5 last season (two interceptions). Oregon's D has gotten ornerier.

    Oct. 9

Clemson at Wake Forest: Thursday night at Groves Stadium, what could be scarier? No, really. This is a matchup of the ACC's top two quarterbacks.

    Oct. 11

Tim Tebow accounted for three touchdown's in last season's matchup with LSU.

LSU at Florida: The Crazy Les legend grew last season in this meeting. LSU went five-for-five on fourth downs. Tim Tebow can't be any greater than he was that night (two touchdowns throwing, one rushing), can he?

Arizona State at USC: If the Trojans are going to be knocked off their Pac-10 throne, it has to start here. It's been nine years since the Sun Devils won in the Coliseum.

Oklahoma vs. Texas (in Dallas): As usual, Big 12 South and national championship hopes are at stake. Somehow, the turkey legs and corn dogs taste better for the winners.

    Oct. 18

Kansas at Oklahoma: Kansas' Todd Reesing likes to run around. Oklahoma DE Auston English likes to chase. Reesing better have help. Oklahoma is 21-0 in Big 12 home games since 2002. Michigan at Penn State: Give Rodriguez Penn State's skill players and Michigan might have a better chance this season. Give Rod JoePa's players and he might have the cops swarming around.

Ohio State at Michigan State: Mark Dantonio tries to psyche out his former boss (Jim Tressel) by sporting green and white argyle. Will it matter? Ohio State has won the last six in this series.

Missouri at Texas: This might be all that stands between Missouri and an undefeated season. The Tigers are a better team on paper but this game is in Austin where the Longhorns are 10-0 following the Oklahoma game the past decade. Four of those wins have been against ranked teams.

    Oct. 23

Auburn at West Virginia: This should be interesting. One of the nation's best spread-option pass schemers (Auburn OC Tony Franklin) vs. one of the nation's best spread-option run schemes.

    Oct. 25

Alabama at Tennessee: The Tide might have reached their '07 high in last seasons' 24-point victory over UT. John Parker Wilson, time for you to step up again.

    Oct. 26

Central Florida at Tulsa: 2007's No. 1 offense (nationally) vs. Conference USA's No. 1 defense (projected in 2008). The Golden Hurricane lost twice to the Knights last season, including the Conference USA championship game.

Georgia at LSU: SEC championship game preview? The teams haven't met since the '05 title game. Pro SCOUT s fight over press box space to watch Matthew Stafford vs. the LSU defense.

    Nov. 1

Georgia vs. Florida (in Jacksonville, Fla.) Urban Meyer orders the entire population of Gainesville onto the field after the Gators first touchdown.

Texas at Texas Tech: The over-under is 78. That's the average number of points scored in this game the past five years. All have been won by Texas.

    Nov. 8

Could this be the final Bowden Bowl?

Clemson at Florida State: Tommy has won the last four out of five over his dad. Will this be the last meeting?

    Nov. 22

BYU at Utah: Hopefully, a BCS bowl is at stake. The last time it was, Utah fans broke out one of the best signs of all time during a rout of the Cougars: Where's Your God Now?

Michigan at Ohio State: Yo, Rich. Big game today. You might have heard about when you came to town.

Cal Poly at Wisconsin: The San Luis Obispo County fair got in the way of a September meeting so they moved this game to late November. Kidding. Just threw this in to remind you that no one is safe. The I-AA Mustangs won at San Diego State in 2006, averaged a school-record 40 points last season and return 10 starters to a confusing option offense.

    Nov. 28

West Virginia at Pittsburgh: Devine vs. McCoy. Stewart vs. Wannstedt. White vs. Pittsburgh's defense. West Virginia's psyche vs. itself. Just think if the Mountaineers need this to go to the BCS title game. Again.

    Nov. 29

Chase Daniel and Mizzou should have a lot riding on the outcome of the Kansas game.

Missouri vs. Kansas (in Kansas City, Mo.): The winner could be playing at Arrowhead two weeks in a row. Kansas City hosts the Big 12 championship game on Dec. 6. Nothing, though, can top last season's epic. The second-largest crowd in Arrowhead history watched Missouri win 36-28.

Auburn at Alabama: Tommy Tuberville is running out of hands to show the cameras how many times in a row he has won.

    Dec. 6

South Florida at West Virginia: Jim Leavitt might -- just might -- admit this is a big game. The South Florida coach fell asleep during Neil Armstrong's walk on the moon. Not much phases him. The winner here should capture the Big East. Two top 10 Mountaineers' teams have played South Florida the past two years. Two top 10 Mountaineers teams have come out losers. The tough Bulls' D has shut down West Virginia's running game.

USC at UCLA: Rick Neuheisel is Tabasco. This rivalry, lately has been rice cakes. In other words, USC-UCLA needs a little Ricky Tabasco.

#1 USC at Oregon State [ESPN | 9 PM ET]

USC (-25, O/U 51): The Trojans had a week off to savor their dismantling of Ohio State but now they must travel to Corvallis, where they were upset by Oregon State in their last visit. Everything is working for USC right now. The Trojans talented stable of running backs must be licking their chops facing a Beavers defense that lost its entire front seven from a year ago and have been getting gashed on the ground so far this season. Oregon State quarterback Lyle Moevao has some weapons at his disposal but he’ll be going up against a USC defensive unit that has only allowed one touchdown in two games.

USC is 7-1 ATS in its last 8 games following a bye week.
USC is 4-1 ATS in its last 5 road games.

Key Injuries - CB Shareece Wright (neck) is OUT.
WR Patrick Turner (thigh) is probable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 41 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

Oregon State: The largest crowd ever will be present to root on Oregon State as they attempt to upset USC for the second time in three years at home. After getting their first win of the year over Hawaii, the Beavers had a week off to prepare for the mighty Trojans. Oregon State ranks ninth in the nation and leads the Pac-10, averaging 307 passing yards through three games. They’ll definitely be challenged by a USC defense only giving up half that (145.5 yards) but this will be the best passing team the Trojans have faced up to this point. The Beavers need to find a run defense in a hurry or it will be a long night for all those fans in Corvallis.

Oregon State is 2-11-1 ATS in its last 14 games in September.
Oregon State is 7-0 ATS in its last 7 games on turf.

Key Injuries - G Jeremy Perry (knee) is questionable.
K Justin Kahut (hip) is questionable.

              PROJECTED SCORE: 14

Tennessee has punting woes, allowing two TDs in three games; they lost last three games vs Auburn, 28-21/34-10/38-28. Both sides have strong spread record coming off losses. Vols' RB Foster had 14 TDs last year, doesn't have one yet in '08. Tigers turned ball over nine times in last three games, are 11 for last 42 on third down, sign of QB issues.

This is first time Wisconsin has played Michigan with Badgers ranked and Wolverines unranked since 1959; Home side won last three games in series, with Badgers losing last visit here, 27-13 (+13). Big 12 home favorites are 11-5 vs spread; MWC dogs are 6-4 vs spread. Frogs outscored foes 73-0 in first half this season.

Florida State (-4.5) won 16-6 in Boulder LY, despite going 1-13 on its third down plays; they gained just 221 total yards in game. Penn State has to be very excited that USC lost at Oregon State, after they crushed Beavers in Happy Valley; has to help their rating quite a bit. Lions crushed first three opponents by combined score of 145-30, but they're also collection of stiffs. Illinois covered its last four tries as Big 11 road dog- they were shaky in last game, 20-17 win over ULL, after losing opener 52-42 vs Mizzou in St Louis (allowed 549 yards).

Memphis led 31-6 at half in Jonesboro last year, then lost 35-31 in a shocking loss at Arkansas State team that has established itself as Sun Belt favorite in '08 with 31-14 win vs Middle Tennessee; they're 3-1, winning at Texas A&M in its only road game. This is local rivalry vs Memphis team that is 0-3 vs D-I foes this year, allowing 100 points, 423.7 ypg. ASU already has a +8 turnover ratio this season.

-- South Carolina lost last two games vs D-I foes, scoring total of 24 points; they beat I-AA Wofford 23-13 last week, not good. SEC HFs are 9-5 vs spread in non-conference games.

-- Texas A&M needed last-minute TD to beat Army 28-24 in its last meeting, two years ago in San Antonio; Aggies are struggling, losing last two home games, 18-14 to Arkansas State, 41-23 to Miami.

-- New Mexico won last five games vs New Mexico State by average score of 36-26; underdog covered seven of last 10 in series. Lobos lost first road game last week, 56-14 at Tulsa; they trailed 35-0 at the half.

#9 Wisconsin at Michigan [ABC | 3:30 PM ET]

Wisconsin (-6, O/U 42): After a hard-fought win at Fresno State, Wisconsin takes to the road once again to battle a reeling Michigan squad. New starting quarterback Allan Evridge has played well so far and the Badgers tight ends have been his main targets. The combination of Travis Beckum and Garrett Graham will cause matchup problems for the struggling Wolverines pass defense. As usual, the Badgers defense has been stout, allowing just 87.7 yards per game on the ground.

Wisconsin is 1-6 ATS in its last 7 road games.
Wisconsin is 5-0-1 ATS in the last 6 meetings against Michigan.

Key Injuries - CB Aaron Henry (knee) is questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 27 (SIDE PLAY OF THE DAY)

Michigan: After three games it looks like Michigan could be facing its first losing season in three years. The Wolverines have been awful on offense and surprisingly inconsistent on defense, as the team is still adjusting to the new coaching staff. If the offense is going to improve, it will be up to a pair of freshmen: quarterback Steven Threet and running back Sam McGuffie. The defense gave up a combined 60 points to Utah and Notre Dame but the Wolverines have been stingy versus the run, allowing just 65.3 yards per game.

Michigan is 1-5 ATS in its last 6 games overall.
The OVER is 6-0-1 in Michigan’s last 7 games following a bye week.

Key Injuries - S Brandon Smith (appendix) is OUT.

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 14

#8 Alabama at #3 Georgia [ESPN | 7:45 PM ET]

Alabama: The Tide will find out if they are serious SEC title contenders when they head Between the Hedges to take on the third ranked Bulldogs. For the Tide to pull the upset, they will rely on a stingy defensive unit that has only allowed three touchdowns on the year and has one of the nation’s top rush defenses, allowing just 55 yards per game. Alabama’s defense has also been opportunistic, picking off four passes last week at Arkansas, returning two for scores. The Tide has won 17 consecutive SEC openers, the longest streak in school history and longest active streak in the conference.

Alabama is 4-1 ATS in its last 5 games overall.
The OVER is 7-1 in Alabama’s last 8 games following a SU win.

                          Key Injuries - NONE

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 17

Georgia (-7, O/U 43): The Bulldogs are coming off an impressive thrashing of Arizona State but tonight Georgia will face its toughest test to date when the undefeated Crimson Tide come to town. This game will be a physical battle. The Dawgs will look to get Knowshon Moreno going against one of the toughest rush defenses in the country. With Alabama being so strong against the run, a lot of pressure will be on quarterback Matthew Stafford to make plays down the field. Stafford is coming off a career-high 285 yards passing against Arizona State but Nick Saban’s blitzing defense will present a different challenge. The same holds true for Bama quarterback John Parker Wilson. Georgia currently leads the nation in rush defense, giving up just 45.8 yards per game.

Georgia is 4-0-1 ATS in its last 5 games in September.
Georgia is 4-0 ATS in its last 4 home games.

Key Injuries - DE Jeremy Lomax (neck) is probable.
TE Tripp Chandler (neck) is probable.

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 24

#22 Illinois at #12 Penn State [ABC | 8 PM ET]

Illinois: The Illini had a week off to prepare for a Penn State offense that’s been downright scary so far this season. If Illinois’ offense is going to keep pace with the Nittany Lions, it will need to play much better than it did in the Illini’s last game against Louisiana-Lafayette. Despite playing one of the worst defenses in the country, the Illini managed just 13 points and 341 yards of total offense. This could be a long night for Illinois if its defense doesn’t step up. The Illini were ripped in their opener by Missouri and are allowing 163 yards per game on the ground so far this season.

Illinois is 3-12 ATS in its last 15 games on grass.
Illinois is 6-2 ATS in its last 8 conference games.

Key Injuries - WR Jeff Cumberland (foot) is probable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 28 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

Penn State (-14.5, O/U 59): There aren’t many teams that have started the season more impressive that Penn State. Offensively, the Nittany Lions have scored 27 touchdowns in four games and average 538 yards per contest. The defense has been equally as impressive, allowing just 222.3 yards per game. The big difference in the 2008 version of Penn State has been the play of quarterback Daryll Clark. A threat to both run and throw, Clark has ignited what was a predictable offense a year ago. Penn State steps up in competition tonight but its defense has been nasty so far. In their most recent game against Temple, the Nittany Lions recorded seven sacks and three interceptions.

Penn State is 4-0 ATS in its last 4 games overall.
Penn State is 0-4 ATS in its last 4 conference games.

Key Injuries - DE Maurice Evans (suspension) is doubtful.
DT Abe Koroma (suspension) is doubtful.

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 42
