    Daily Sports Roundup

    Monday, September 22

A primetime NFL matchup between the Jets and Chargers knocks baseball's playoff races out of the sporting spotlight on Monday night. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

The Chargers have not had the start they wanted to the regular season. San Diego was bounced 26-24 by the Panthers in Week 1, and they followed that result with a controversial 39-38 loss to the Broncos in Week 2. That means the Chargers will still be looking for their first win of the year when they host the Jets on Monday Night Football.

New York has started their Brett Favre era with a 1-1 record, beating the Dolphins 20-14 in their opener but then falling 19-10 to the Patriots last time out. Through two contests Favre is 33-of-48 for 375 yards passing, with three TDs, one INT, and a rating of 104.1. Last week against the Patriots, though, Favre only managed to post a rating of 85.6.

The oddsmakers expect San Diego to break into the win column on Monday night, as they're currently pegged as 8.5-point home favorites (with the game's total at 44.5 points). That line, though, could still move around before kickoff, depending on the latest news on hobbled RB LaDainian Tomlinson (toe). LT was listed as QUESTIONABLE on San Diego's official injury report, and latest word was that he'd share carries Monday.

    Other Notable Events

Baseball enters the final week of its regular season on Monday, with the NL East division title still up for grabs. Both Philadelphia and New York will be at home on Monday, with the Phillies hosting Atlanta and the Mets getting a visit from the Cubs.

Meanwhile, the Rays will try to lock down top spot in the AL East this week, and they'll start a road series in Baltimore on Monday night. The Red Sox, who could still overtake their upstart rival with a strong week, will play the Indians at Fenway Park on Monday.

    The Rest of the Schedule

There are only five other games on a light MLB schedule on Monday: Kansas City at Detroit, Oakland at Texas, the Angels at Seattle, Florida at Cincinnati, and Arizona at St. Louis. The top pitchers in action will be Brandon Webb (21-7, 3.26 ERA) for the Diamondbacks and Ervin Santana (15-6, 3.33 ERA) for the AL West champion Angels.

Finally, it's New York at Connecticut and Sacramento at San Antonio in the WNBA playoffs on Monday night. Both of those first-round series are currently knotted at 1-1.

    News from the Wire

WR David Clowney (shoulder) and K Mike Nugent (right thigh) are both OUT for the Jets on Monday night. CB David Barrett (shoulder), WR Laveranues Coles (thigh), and CB Justin Miller (foot) are all QUESTIONABLE . . . C Nick Hardwick (foot) is OUT for the Chargers, T Marcus McNeill (neck) and Tomlinson are QUESTIONABLE, and each of LB Marques Harris (rib), S Clinton Hart (hand), LB Shaun Phillips (groin), RB Darren Sproles (hamstring), and DT Jamal Williams (knee) have been listed as PROBABLE.

    A Peek at the Future

It might the last hurrah for the Twins starting on Tuesday night, as they begin a series at home against the rival White Sox. Minnesota will need to overtake Chicago in the AL Central division standings in order to make the playoffs this season . . . the Sprint Cup Series follows up last week's Camping World RV 400 presented by AAA at Dover with this week's similarly-named Camping World RV 400 presented by Coleman at Kansas.

      Six-pack for Monday

-- Brewers finally won a game, are now just 1.5 games behind the Mets in the Wild Card race, with one week left to go.

-- Mets, Brewers both play the Cubs this week; Milwaukee has to play hapless Pirates, while Mets close out with spunky Marlins.

-- Dodgers aren't out of woods yet, leading Arizona by 2.5 games after losing 1-0 in 11 innings to San Francisco.

-- Rays lead Boston by 1.5 games in AL East; winner gets Central champ, runner-up gets the West champ Angels.

-- Red Sox clinch Wild Card if they beat the Indians Monday; Tribe won their last six games, are now back over .500.

-- White Sox lead Minnesota by 2.5 games, but they have to go to Metrodome for series starting Tuesday, so Twins have a shot.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday

        13) Steelers' coach Mike Tomlin screwed up clock management at the end of his game in Philly Sunday; down 15-6 and facing fourth down with his backup QB in the game, Tomlin went for it on fourth down instead of kicking FG that would have made score 15-9, and given the Steelers a chance to recover an onside kick. Terrible coaching move.

Steelers-Eagles played Rock 'em/Sock 'em Robots for three hours in this game; both QBs left with injuries, though McNabb came back-- Steelers lost in Philly for 8th straight time, 15-6.

        12) Atlanta rookie QB Ryan has now averaged over 10 yards a pass attempt in each of his first two home games.....very impressive.

        11) Raiders scored a TD and three FGs in their four trips inside the Buffalo red zone; Bills had three TDs and one FG in their four, and that was difference in 24-23 Buffalo win, where the team that played better lost the game. Very bitter loss for Oakland squad that led this game throughout.........

        10) Kerry Collins averaged 7.3 yards per pass, and Houston was just awful in red zone (one TD, two FGs on six drives) as Titans moved to 3-0 with 31-12 win over Houston that was little misleading. The rookie RB from West Virginia, Steve Slaton, ran ball well for Texans.

        9) Bengal offense showed some life, converting 10-17 on third down, but Cincinnati came up just short- they were on 4-yard line when the fourth quarter ended and had to kick game-tying FG.

        8) Arizona had TD called back by questionable delay of game call in first quarter, then turned ball over twice, leading to ten Washington points, as Redskins used 11-yard advantage in field position to fend off the much-improved Cardinals, 24-17.

        7) Sometimes you watch a game after studying data all week, and you feel like the dumbest person on earth. Miami 38, New England 13 is the game that brought on that feeling this week. After getting killed in the desert last week, what a great win for the Dolphins. Matt Cassel is now officially back to being a suspect in Foxboro.

        6) Brian Greise was 38-67/407 passing, beating his old team Chicago in OT, scoring the last 13 points of the game. Kyle Orton isn't ready to be trusted with a good NFL offense; he threw a horrific INT for a TD on a botched screen pass in the first half. It cost them later; when Bears were trying to run out clock, they wouldn't let him throw pass.

        5) Carolina-Minnesota game turned on a sack/fumble/TD by Vikings that tied game at 10; Panthers gained just 204 yards, third least in the NFL Sunday- they also had 12 penalties for 67 yards, as Frerotte era in Metrodome gets off to shaky, but successful start.

        4) In their first three games, Rams have been outscored 116-29, and were outgained 1,370-607. Heads will roll soon, maybe during a bye week that comes after next week's Buffalo game. The alarming thing is that opposing running backs move the defensive line back when there are collisions on running plays. Rams just look physically weak on both lines, which is the same as having zero pitching in baseball.

        3) Detroit fired Mike Martz because they wanted balance in their offense; Martz' 49ers gained 182 rushing yards, 188 passing yards in an easy 31-13 win against the Lions Sunday. As bad as things are in St Louis, they're a lot worse in Detroit.

        2) Saints-Broncos might be the two most entertaining teams in NFL, along with Dallas; they slugged it out in Denver Sunday, and Broncos won when Martin Gramatica missed 43-yard FG wide right. Denver wins another great game, 34-32. Saints are a disappointing 1-2.

        1) Jacksonville had 236 rushing yards with a screwed-up offensive line, bad news for Indy defense. Balance of power is swinging back to the NFC- they have a 6-3 lead in interconference games so far, and in absence of Brady, Merriman and with Indys injury problems, power teams in AFC might not be so powerful anymore.

                  Tips and Trends
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Cubs at New York Mets [7:10 PM ET]

Cubs: Jason Marquis has been solid for the Cubs in his last four starts. He’s 2-2 over that span but has allowed two runs or less three times. Marquis has pitched much better away from Wrigley Field this season, going 6-3 with an impressive 3.05 ERA.

Cubs are 8-3 in their last 11 Monday games.
Cubs are 1-4 in their last five games in NY.

                  Key Injuries - NONE

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Mets (-140, O/U 9.5): After getting lit up in his first career start, Jonathan Niese pitched a gem his last time out. Niese went eight strong innings, allowing no runs and striking out seven, in getting his first career victory over the Braves. Niese does need to work on his control. He has allowed six walks in just 11 innings of work.

Mets are 4-0 in their last 4 vs. AL Central.
Mets are 4-11 in their last 15 Monday games.

Key Injuries - 3B Fernando Tatis (shoulder) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (Side Play of the Day)

Arizona Diamondbacks at St. Louis Cardinals [8:15 PM ET]

Diamondbacks (-125, O/U 7.5): After a brief three-game skid, Brandon Webb is back to normal, allowing just three runs in his last 15 innings of work. Webb has lost his last two starts on the road but overall he’s been strong away from home, going 10-5 with an ERA of 3.28. The OVER is 5-2 in Webb’s last seven starts.

Diamondbacks are 5-1 in their last 6 overall.
Diamondbacks are 8-3 in Webb's last 11 starts.

                  Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (Side Play of the Day)

Cardinals: Todd Wellemeyer is just 1-3 in his last four starts but he’s actually pitched pretty well. Wellemeyer has only allowed nine runs over 26 innings in those four outings but the Cardinals have scored a total of just seven runs to help him out. Not surprisingly, the UNDER cashed easily in all four of those games.

Cardinals are 2-8 in their last 10 games overall.
Cardinals are 3-7 in Wellemeyer's last 10 starts.

Key Injuries - RF Rick Ankiel (abdominal) is OUT.

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 3

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    Monday’s streaking and slumping pitchers

                    Streaking

Ricky Nolasco, Florida Marlins (15-7, 3.52 ERA)

Nolasco has had his hand in the Marlins' recent success. The righty has four wins in his last six starts, pushing his total to 15 and Florida on the verge of a Wild Card run. His most recent effort was a seven-inning, six-hit, two-run performance versus the Astros.

Nolasco takes the mound in this make-up matchup with a 0-1 record in two career starts against the Reds. He has a 5.90 ERA over those contests.

Brandon Webb, Arizona Diamondback (21-7, 3.34 ERA)

Welcome back Brandon. After three straight horrific starts, Webb returned from summer vacation in familiar form in his previous two trips to the mound. He pitched eight shut-out innings against the Reds and seven two-run innings versus the Giants heading into Monday's game.

That three-game skid could cost Webb a shot at the Cy Young but the race in the National League West is more of a concern for the sinker baller. Arizona is 3 1/2 games behind Los Angeles.

                    Slumping

Zach Jackson, Cleveland Indians (0-3, 6.35 ERA)

Cleveland's young lefty goes searching for his first win of the season in one of the most unlikely places - Fenway Park. Jackson takes his first shot at the BoSox after recording losses in three of his last four appearances.

Jackson was beat around for seven runs in just over five innings in his last start. He has a 4.66 ERA on the road, which is much more favorable than his double-figure number at home.

Todd Wellemeyer, St. Louis Cardinals (12-8, 3.66 ERA)

Wellemeyer has felt the Cards' recent skid more than anyone. The right hander is just 1-4 in his last five starts despite posting a 3.37 ERA and a 24/9 strikeout-to-walk tally. He has received just 1.4 runs of support per game during that span.

Wellemeyer's only appearance against the D-backs was a three-inning showing in which he was knocked around for four runs on seven hits last year.

                      STARS

                      Sunday

                      — Prince Fielder, Brewers, homered and drove in three runs as Milwaukee topped Cincinnati 8-1.

                      — Jamie Moyer, Phillies, the 45-year-old pitched six strong innings in 90-degree sunshine to help Philadelphia beat Florida 5-2.

                      — Ryan Garko, Indians, went 4-for-4 with five RBIs as Cleveland beat Detroit 10-5.

                      — Ryan Dempster, Cubs, pitched five effective innings to win his 17th game of the season in Chicago’s 5-1 victory over St. Louis.

                      — Jack Cust, Athletics, hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning and Oakland beat Seattle 5-3.

                      — John Lackey, Angels, gave up two hits and struck out a career-high 12 in six shutout innings of Los Angeles’ 7-3 win over Texas.

                      FAREWELL OLD FRIEND

Andy Pettitte started and Mariano Rivera finished the final game at 85-year-old Yankee Stadium, New York’s 7-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday night. Former Yankees greats, including six Hall of Famers, took the field before the game, and Derek Jeter jogged off the field to a raucous cheer just before it ended. New York finished 4,133-2,430-17 at Yankee Stadium, originally built in 284 days for $2.5 million. It was the first sports venue to be called a stadium, the team noted. “I feel like I’m losing an old friend,” Reggie Jackson said. “I’m glad I was here.”

                      OUCH!

Los Angeles Angels lefty Joe Saunders’ ongoing problems with a kidney stone will cause him to miss Tuesday night’s scheduled start against Seattle. Angels manager Mike Scioscia said Jered Weaver and Jon Garland would move ahead one day and pitch on their usual four days’ rest.

“We’ll look for a Thursday starter,” Scioscia said before Sunday’s game against Texas.

                      ROAD WARRIOR

Boston starter Daisuke Matsuzaka (18-2) improved to 9-0 with a 2.31 ERA in 13 road starts after beating the Blue Jays 3-0 on Sunday. He held Toronto to just two hits in seven innings while striking out six and walking two.

                      BLOWING AWAY THE COMPETITION

Los Angeles is trying to become the first AL team since Cleveland in 1999 to take a division by 20 games over its nearest pursuer. The Angeles hold a 21 1/2 game lead over the second-place Texas Rangers after Sunday’s 7-3 victory.

                      NO RELIEF IN SIGHT

The New York Mets’ bullpen blew another lead in Sunday as Atlanta rallied from a 4-3 deficit in the eighth inning to win 7-6. It was the latest collapse for a beleaguered bullpen missing injured closer Billy Wagner. The relievers have a league-high 16 blown saves since the All-Star break, the worst in the NL. Scott Schoeneweis has lost three games since Aug. 26 and the relievers have a woeful 2-8 record since Aug. 11.

                      SEPTEMBER TO REMEMBER

Roy Oswalt passed Babe Ruth for the second-best winning percentage in September and October since 1900, based on a minimum of 25 decisions. Oswalt is 27-8 (.771) in those months, .002 better than Ruth, who was 20-6 (.769) as a pitcher before becoming an outfielder. The only better September-October record than Oswalt’s was by Sam Leever (43-12, .782), according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

                      STATS

The Rockies’ attendance this season was 2,650,218, their highest since 2002. … San Francisco closer Brian Wilson became just the third Giants pitcher to reach 40 saves, joining Rod Beck and Robb Nenn, who did it four times. … After losing to the San Diego Padres, the Nationals need to go 5-1 the rest of the way to avoid the franchise’s first season with 100 losses since the Montreal Expos were 55-107 in 1976.

                      SPEAKING

“I’m very, very sad to think that the Yankee Stadium is not going to be in existence any longer. I wish it could have remained as a New York landmark, but I guess like all things it has come to its final days as we all do.”—said Julia Ruth Stevens, 92-year-old daughter of the Babe, who threw out the ceremonial first pitch before a crowd of 54,610—bringing the stadium total to 151,959,005—at the final game at Yankee Stadium.

                          Rays vs. Orioles (+125, 10)

David Price is a going to be a very big part of the Tampa Bay Rays' future. It is the present, however, that is of utmost concern to the highly touted prospect and his playoff-bound team.

Price, the top overall pick in the 2007 draft, makes his first major league start for the Rays as they try to move closer to an AL East title Monday night in the opener of a four-game series against the Baltimore Orioles.

Price (0-0, 3.00 ERA) should become a fixture in the Rays' starting rotation in the very near future after the Rays made him the No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 draft out of Vanderbilt. He was dominant at three minor league levels this season, going 12-1 with a 2.30 ERA.

This will be the third major league appearance for Price, who made his debut Sept. 14 in relief against the New York Yankees, giving up two runs and three hits in 5 1-3 innings while striking out four. He allowed one hit and recorded both of his outs on strikeouts in Tampa Bay's 11-8 loss to Minnesota on Thursday.Rays manager Joe Maddon said he likes the way Baltimore's hitters match up with Price.

"Just looking at the Orioles, if you look at Price's record this year, he does nice against left-handed hitters," Maddon told the Rays' official Web site.

                          Pick: Rays

                          Braves vs. Phillies (-155, 10)

Trying to extend their lead in the division, the Phillies look to win their sixth straight game against the Braves when the teams open a three-game series Monday night at Citizens Bank Park.Philadelphia (88-68) has won nine of its last 10 games, opening a 1 1/2-game lead over the New York Mets in the East after beating Florida 5-2 on Sunday.

Philadelphia leads the season series 13-2, its most wins against Atlanta (69-87) in a single season. Last week, the Phillies swept a three-game series at Turner Field to finish the season 9-0 there, becoming the first team to sweep a season series longer than four games in Atlanta.

Chipper Jones, who leads the majors with a .362 batting average, did not start for the Braves for the second straight game yesterday because of tendinitis in his right shoulder. He drew an intentional walk as a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning.

"I want to be out there playing, but I'm not healthy," said Jones, who hopes to play Monday. "I can't do what I'm supposed to be doing on the field right now."

                          Pick: Phillies
