Record: 3-0
Won with Tulane last week in what turned out to be a pretty fun game to watch on TV thanks to the Houston-Air Force game being moved.
Got a couple interesting games this weekend including one that I like, so what the heck.
SMU +24
Coming off their annual beatdown at the hands of Texas Tech, SMU isn't the most attractive team to find yourself backing right now. So why do I like them this week?
1. It's a rivalry game. As a 23-point dog last year, SMU lost by 14. As a 13.5-point dog in 2005, SMU won by 11. As a 24.5-point dog in 2004, SMU lost by 7. In total, SMU has covered the double digit spread against TCU in 4 of their past 5 meetings.
2. TCU circled next week's game while SMU circled this week's game. If ever there was a time when a team might look past their current opponent to the next one, this is it. TCU gets Oklahoma next week and you know they think they can repeat their performance in Norman from 3 years ago. Anyone remember what happened the week after TCU pulled off that huge upset? Yep, they lost at SMU.
3. TCU wins games with their dominating defense and running game. Even considering their laugher against SFA, you're talking about a TCU team that's 99th in the country in pass yards/game. It's an efficient offense, but not a high-powered offense with long TDs. If SMU obliges, this should shorten the game and keep the score low.
As long as Mitchell doesn't go bananas with the interceptions again this week, I think SMU can hang for a while in this one. They won't seriously approach an upset, but they'll hang, and that's all that matters.
Prediction: TCU 28 - SMU 14
