    Tips and Trends
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Milwaukee Brewers at Chicago Cubs [2:20 PM ET]

Brewers: The Brewers need a strong performance from Dave Bush tonight but in order for that to happen, he’ll need to buck recent history. In 10 career starts against the Cubs, Bush is a miserable 1-7 with a 5.16 ERA. In his last time out versus Chicago on July 31, Bush allowed seven runs and three home runs. There are usually a lot of runs scored when Bush pitches. The OVER is 4-1 in his last five starts.

Brewers are 4-12 in Bush’s last 16 road starts.
The OVER is 4-1-1 in Bush’s last 6 starts vs. NL Central.

Key Injuries - OF Gape Kapler (shoulder) is OUT.
    PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Cubs (-260): Rich Harden has been sensational for the Cubs. Chicago has won seven straight games with Harden on the hill and he’s 5-0 at Wrigley Field with a stellar 1.79 ERA. In his last 10 starts, Harden has allowed 1 run or less seven times. His only career start against the Brewers came on July 31 in a game Harden allowed only one run through seven innings, while striking out nine. The UNDER is 4-0 in Harden’s last four starts.

Cubs are 6-0 in their last 6 Thursday games.
Cubs are 4-0 in Harden’s last 4 home starts.

    Key Injuries - NONE

    PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Minnesota Twins at Tampa Bay Rays [7:10 PM ET]

Twins: Glen Perkins hasn’t been sharp recently. In his last four starts, Perkins has allowed 19 runs in 20.2 innings of work. He has had success on the road, going 5-1 this season with a 4.91 ERA. However, Perkins has been far from dominant in his last 10 starts, allowing four runs or more eight times over that span. The OVER has been money with Perkins on the mound, going 7-2-1 in his last 10 starts.

Twins are 1-6 in their last 7 road games vs. a right-handed starter.
Twins are 4-12 in their last 16 vs. AL East.

    Key Injuries - NONE

    PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Rays (-160, O/U 8): James Shields is coming off a stellar performance against the Yankees when he shut out the Bombers over eight innings in a 7-1 Rays win. Overall in his last three starts, Shields has allowed just four runs in 23 innings of work. Shields has been particularly tough to beat at home. He’s 9-2 with a 2.34 ERA in 16 starts at Tropicana Field this season. Even though he’s pitched well, the OVER has cashed in two of Shields’ last three starts.

Rays are 4-0 in their last 4 home games vs. a left-handed starter.
Rays are 4-1 in their last 5 vs. AL Central.

Key Injuries - OF B.J. Upton (quad) is day-to-day.

    PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Major League Baseball – Streaking Pitchers

      MLB

      Thursday, September 18

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
      Streaking Starting Pitchers
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Thursday’s streaking and slumping pitchers

      Streaking

Rich Harden, Chicago Cubs (10-2, 2.04 ERA)

Harden hasn't dropped a decision since July 21 and is 5-0 in his last eight starts. During that time the Cubs' right-hander has an ERA of 1.88 and put in his most impressive performance of the streak, a seven-inning, one-hit showing with nine strikeouts against Milwaukee on July 31.

Tim Lincecum, San Francisco Giants (17-3, 2.43)

Lincecum is 6-1 since the All-Star break with a 2.19 ERA and 102 strikeouts. A good chunk of those K's came in his last start when the righty whiffed a dozen batters in a complete-game shutout versus the Padres last weekend.

The second-year hurler has a stellar 10-1 road mark this year and an ERA of 2.13 when taking the mound in opposing parks. Lincecum is 2-0 in his three starts against the Diamondbacks. However, with the Giants out of the playoff picture the team will be careful with their prize pitcher's work load in his final starts of the season.

      Slumping

Kyle Lohse, St. Louis Cardinals (13-6, 3.80 ERA)

It's Lohse vs. Volquez Round 2 when the pitchers meet for the first time since their August 17 altercation in which they traded heat-seekers at each other's heads. Lohse was eventually suspended for the incident and returns to the mound against his former club.

Call it karma, but since that game Lohse hasn't recorded a win in four starts. He isn't pitching poorly with a 2.84 ERA over four no decisions, but now comes off an eight-day hiatus which doesn't sit well with the right hander. He has only one win in his last 10 appearances and the Reds have followed suit with a 2-8 record in those games.

      Jo-Jo Reyes, Atlanta Braves (3-11, 5.50 ERA)

Reyes summed up his season in two quick innings versus the Mets last weekend. The south paw was lit up for four earned runs, two dingers, in a 5-0 loss. Reyes' last win was recorded in the middle of June and he has seven losses in his 11 starts since.

The last time Reyes faced the Phillies was in a relief appearance where he got cracked for five earned runs, two home runs and walked four batters in just over two innings of work. As a starter, he is 0-2 with a 5.79 ERA when facing Philly this season.

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot Lines: Thursday's best MLB bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Minnesota Twins at Tampa Bay Rays (-160,8)

The Rays (90-60) moved closer to securing a playoff spot this week, winning two of three against the second-place Boston Red Sox, including a 10-3 win on Wednesday, to take a two-game lead in the AL East.

Tampa Bay can clinch at least a wild-card berth with two wins over the Twins (82-70) during this series. The Rays and Twins split a two-game set at the Metrodome in April and Tampa Bay has lost 11 of its last 16 home games against the Twins, although it's won three of the last four.

Minnesota, meanwhile, comes in trying to regroup after losing four in a row and being swept in a three-game series at Cleveland. The Twins closed the set with a 6-4 loss on Wednesday.

Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau each had three hits as the Twins rallied to tie the game in the seventh inning before another meltdown by their relievers. Minnesota's bullpen, which is responsible for 10 of the club's last 16 losses, gave up two runs in the bottom half.

Despite the slump, the Twins remain just 2 1/2 games out of first place in the AL Central. Minnesota faces the division-leading Chicago White Sox in a three-game series at the Metrodome beginning Sept. 23.

          Pick: Rays

San Francisco Giants at Arizona Diamondbacks (-102, 7)

After a difficult stretch, the Arizona Diamondbacks finally gained ground in the NL West race.

That could come to a halt against Tim Lincecum, who looks to bolster his chances for the NL Cy Young Award when he tries to help the San Francisco Giants avoid a four-game sweep by the Diamondbacks on Thursday.

Arizona (75-76) has won three straight and pulled within 3 1/2 games of the NL West-leading Dodgers with a 7-6 win over the Giants (68-84) on Wednesday. Stephen Drew finished with four hits while Justin Upton hit a two-run homer during a five-run second inning.

The three-game winning streak is Arizona's longest since it won four in a row from July 29-Aug. 1. The Diamondbacks entered this series having lost 15 of 19, but they are trying to put that behind them.

Arizona looks to complete its first four-game sweep of San Francisco when it faces Lincecum (17-3, 2.43 ERA), one of the leading candidates for the NL Cy Young Award.

Lincecum appears to be battling Arizona's Brandon Webb, who recorded his 21st win of the season on Wednesday, for the honor. Lincecum is coming off his first career shutout after he allowed just four hits against the Padres on Saturday, striking out 12 on a career-high 138 pitches in the 7-0 win.

          Pick: Giants

Milwaukee Brewers at Chicago Cubs [2:20 PM ET]

Brewers: The Brewers need a strong performance from Dave Bush tonight but in order for that to happen, he?ll need to buck recent history.

Overall in his last three starts, Shields has allowed just four runs in 23 innings of work. Shields has been particularly tough to beat at home. He?s 9-2 with a 2.34 ERA in 16 starts at Tropicana Field this season. Even though he?s pitched well, the OVER has cashed in two of Shields? last three starts.

Rays are 4-0 in their last 4 home games vs. a left-handed starter.
