Vikings bench QB Jackson, turn to Frerotte
By JON KRAWCZYNSKI, AP Sports Writer

AP - Sep 17, 1:48 pm EDT NFL Gallery EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP)—The Minnesota Vikings are benching quarterback Tarvaris Jackson in favor of Gus Frerotte.

Coach Brad Childress said Wednesday that Frerotte will start Sunday against the Carolina Panthers.

Jackson started the first two games, both losses. He completed just 51 percent of his passes in those starts, prompting the coach to turn to the 37-year-old journeyman Frerotte.

“I’m just not seeing right now the aggressiveness from Tarvaris that I saw throughout the offseason, training camp, the two preseason games that he played in,” Childress said. “And part of it may be experience. I know Gus will give us that. And I know his approach will also lend itself to that.”

Frerotte was signed in the offseason to be Jackson’s backup, but now finds himself trying to turn around a team that had high expectations. The passing offense has struggled mightily through the first two weeks, not only with Jackson’s accuracy issues, but also with receivers dropping passes and conservative play calling.

After an 18-15 loss to the Colts last weekend in which the offense managed only five field goals, Childress said Jackson “is definitely our quarterback this week.”

But that stance started to soften on Monday, when he said coaches were “chewing on a bunch of things right now and making sure that he’s the best guy for us to go forward.”

By Tuesday, the decision was made to give the job to Frerotte.

“I was very surprised,” receiver Bobby Wade said. “I didn’t anticipate that. Obviously it’s the coach’s decision and the administration’s decision and we have to run with that.”

Childress said that barring injury, Frerotte will be the quarterback for the rest of the season. However, Childress added he hasn’t given up on the 25-year-old Jackson as an option for the team’s long term.

“While I know he doesn’t like it, I’d worry about him if he did like it,” Childress said. “I know he’ll make the most of it.”

Minnesota Moneyline hurt on Sunday. I had it with Tennessee in a parlay for 100. I didn't bet anything else early, just the 2 I liked best. Jackson definitely gets the blame on that.

Me too... but, without a doubt - Joe Mauer is the best Quarterback in this town.....

I truely believe if the Viks waived or released T-jack, He would no longer be in the league.....He is that bad.

That's all fine and good. It wasn't Jackson that called 2 running plays between the tackles on 1st and 2nd down. It also wasn't Jackson that called the gutless 3rd down play. Dungy said they were expecting a run or short pass. Indy was prepared with 8 guys in the box.

Throw an interception, fumble or take your chances running the ball.Running the ball gets it out of Jacksons hands faster which means he can't loose you the game when he don't have the ball in his hand.We had to do that all the time with Vick. You cant trust him.

2 games in after commiting to this guy all off season, they bench him....

And for all those that said it wasn't a big deal to trade Favre to them that it wouldn't make a difference....just wondering if you still feel that way?

Funny how they said Jackson was their man and denied any communication with Farve in the off season. Now the man is
on the bench. They wanted Favre in the worst way.

                        Phil Jr.

I am a Vikes fan that lives in wisconsin. I am not saying jackson is a future hall of famer or anything like that, but ask any badger fan what they thought of childress when he was with the badgers and NOT A ONE OF THEM THOUGHT HE WAS WORTH A CRAP!! I say bench childress. And maybe the next coach can bring out the best in jackson, if not , ol ziggy has had that checkbook working overtime and another QB can be had..
Life is a shit sandwich and every day is another bite. The more bread you have, the less shit you have to eat. I want more bread. May you win all your bets...

I think Jackson has a lot of talent. That talent is just raw right now. I'm not sure what it would take for him to develop. Maybe he never will.
