    Daily Sports Roundup

    Wednesday, September 17

A single college football game shares the spotlight with baseball's pennant races on Wednesday, while golf prepares for the Ryder Cup. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

Louisville will host Kansas State on Wednesday night, with the Wildcats looking to run their record to 3-0 after blasting lesser opponents in their first two games of the season. The Wildcats began the year with an easy 45-6 win over North Texas, and they then rolled past Montana State 69-10 in their second outing. The Cardinals started their season with a 27-1 loss versus Kentucky before beating up on Tennessee Tech 51-10.

The oddsmakers opened the Big 12's Kansas State as 3-point favorites against the Big East's Louisville, and that line increased to four points early in the week. The total for the game is sitting at 56 points, and kickoff is set for 8:00pm ET on Wednesday night.

    Other Notable Events

The Brewers (minus Ned Yost) will continue their series in Chicago on Wednesday, and they'll send Ben Sheets (13-8, 2.97 ERA) to the mound. Sheets was knocked around for five earned runs over six innings by the Phillies in his last outing, and he was beaten by the Cubs back on July 29. Jason Marquis (10-8, 4.36 ERA) will get the ball for Chicago; he is coming off a win over the Reds in which he gave up two runs in 7 1-3 innings.

It'll be Tim Wakefield (9-10, 3.92 ERA) taking on Matt Garza (11-9, 3.60 ERA) when the Red Sox and Rays play in Tampa Bay again on Wednesday. Wakefield blanked the Blue Jays over eight innings in his most recent trip to the mound, giving up just three hits. Garza settled for a no-decision versus the Yankees last time out, allowing three earned runs on six hits over his five innings of work in that contest.

    The Rest of the Schedule

Rounding out the AL slate for Wednesday: Minnesota at Cleveland, the White Sox at the Yankees, Baltimore at Toronto, Detroit at Texas, Seattle at Kansas City, and the Angels at Oakland. Indians starter Cliff Lee (22-2, 2.36) will look to continue his incredible campaign by beating the Twins; he's won each of his last eight starts.

Making up the rest of the NL slate: San Diego at Colorado, the Dodgers at Pittsburgh, Houston at Florida, the Mets at Washington, St. Louis at Cincinnati, Philadelphia at Atlanta, and San Francisco at Arizona. Diamondbacks starter Brandon Webb (20-7, 3.28 ERA) finally won his 20th game last time out, throwing eight scoreless innings.

    News from the Wire

Rays outfielder Carl Crawford is hoping to return from hand surgery by the end of next week, while fellow Tampa outfielder B.J. Upton is still recovering from a quad injury . . . Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith is finally eligible to return from his team-imposed suspension this weekend . . . Cardinals wide receiver Anquan Boldin still wants to be traded, but the team says they have no interest in moving him this season.

    A Peek at the Future

The WNBA playoffs get underway on Thursday night in New York and Sacramento. First-round matchups: Detroit at Indiana, Connecticut at New York, San Antonio at Sacramento, and Seattle at Los Angeles . . . the Europeans are still pegged as the -125 Vegas favorites heading into play at the Ryder Cup on Thursday, with the USA at +105.

      Six-pack for Wednesday

-- The Dale Sveum era in Milwaukee started same way the Ned Yost era ended; Brewers lost 5-4 at Wrigley Tuesday.

-- Prince Fielder hit two homers, but whiffed with tying run on third base to end the game.

-- Mets inexplicably lost 1-0 at Washington; they're now the Wild Card leader, half-game behind Phillies, half-game ahead of Milwaukee with twelve games left in the season.

-- Phillies trailed 7-4 at Atlanta, but rallied to win, moving into first place in NL East, their 7th straight win in Atlanta.

-- Andy Sonnanstine gave up only one run, Dioner Navarro got winning hit as Rays held on to first place with a 2-1 win over Boston. Wakefield-Garza close out series Wednesday.

-- White Sox gained another game on the Twins, are now 2.5 games up in the American League Central.

Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..........

        13) Roy Oswalt had a 32.1 inning scoreless streak, but gave up four in first at Florida, as Astros lost third game in a row, 5-1.

        12) Baltimore Ravens won't have a bye week this season; they practiced all week, but then had game postponed until Week 10. They had Sunday off, but won't get those valuable days off to recharge to for second half of the season.

        11) You see coaches get fired, and you figure their careers are shot, but not always. George Seifert won two Super Bowls with the 49ers, first of which was 14 years after he was fired as head football coach at Cornell. An amazing turnaround.

        10) I'd love to know what Jerry Manuel has to do, if anything, to keep his job as manager of the Mets. Make the playoffs? Win a playoff round? Make the World Series? Win the Series?

        9) We have no way of knowing, but my guess is Vikings aren't 0-2 if Bryant McKinnie didn't get suspended for four games. A team can't lose its best offensive lineman without dropping off.

        8) Arizona's Anquan Boldin didn't catch ball in first half of the Cardinals' opener at Candlestick Park, but in three halves since, he has 14 catches for 222 yards and three TDs. Good test for a 2-0 Redbird team this week, visiting the Redskins in Landover.

        7) Prediction: Colts are going to get stronger as season moves on, as they get their injured guys back. Center Saturday will be back soon, and that will really help an anemic running game.

        6) If you ran a TV network, would you hire Ned Yost to be TV analyst for the playoffs? No manager has ever been fired this close to end of season, with his team still in contention, so he definitely has a unique perspective on things.

One parallel to the Yost firing is in the NHL, where the Devils canned Larry Robinson right before the playoffs, with GM Lou Lamariello taking over, but thats hockey, not baseball.

        5) Wow, the NHL regular season starts in two weeks.

        4) Why was Tony Larussa at White Sox-Bronx game Monday?

        3) Any writer who thinks an NFL coach should be fired after an 0-2 start is an idiot. This time last year, the Giants were 0-2, and in Week 3 they trailed Redskins by 10 at half. No one thought Tom Coughlin would finish the season. His corner has a lot of bandwagon-jumpers in it now.

        2) If an NL East team wins the Wild Card, they'll face the Cubs in first round; if Brewers win it, they'll face NL East champ.

The AL East champ will play the White Sox; the Angels will be up against whichever team doesn't win the AL East.

        1) We're a country of over-reactors; stock market isn't doing so well right now, but on September 11, 2001, the Dow Jones was around 9,200; its around 11,000 now, so panicking should stop. There is no graph in the history of time that always goes up.

                        SCOREBOARD

Milwaukee at Chicago Cubs (8:05 p.m. EDT). Ben Sheets (13-8, 2.97 ERA) must come up big for the slumping Brewers, in a tight race for the NL wild card. Jason Marquis (10-8, 4.36) pitches for the Cubs, closing in on the NL Central title.

                        STARS

                        Tuesday

                        — Ryan Howard, Phillies, went 4-for-5 with a go-ahead homer, a triple and three RBIs to help Philadelphia take over first place in the NL East with an 8-7 win over Atlanta.

                        — Dioner Navarro, Rays, singled with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth to give Tampa Bay a 2-1 win over Boston that kept the Rays in first place in the AL East.

                        — Victor Martinez, Indians, hit the winning, three-run homer and finished 3-for-5 to help Cleveland beat Minnesota 12-9 in 11 innings.

                        — Casey Blake, Dodgers, went 3-for-5 with a home run and a triple as Los Angeles beat Pittsburgh 6-2 to stay 4 1/2 games ahead of second-place Arizona in the NL West.

                        — Dan Haren, Diamondbacks, struck out 12 in a four-hit, 2-0 win over San Francisco.

                        — Odalis Perez, Nationals, allowed four hits in 7 1-3 innings and Washington beat New York 1-0 to drop the Mets into second place, a half-game behind the Phillies in the NL East.

                        — Chris Waters, Orioles, threw a four-hitter for his first complete game in a 2-0 win over the Blue Jays.

                        — Chris Iannetta, Rockies, hit his first grand slam in Colorado’s 10-3 win over San Diego.

                        CC CHANGE

The Chicago Cubs handed CC Sabathia his first National League loss while sending the Milwaukee Brewers to their fifth straight defeat, holding on 5-4. Sabathia (9-1), acquired by the Brewers on July 7, had won 12 straight decisions overall, dating to a June 5 loss to Texas when he was still pitching for Cleveland. He gave up four runs and nine hits in seven innings, including Alfonso Soriano’s 29th homer in the seventh.

                        PHLIPPED

Philadelphia rallied back into first place with an 8-7 win in Atlanta sparked by Ryan Howard’s go-ahead homer in the eighth. Brad Lidge escaped a bases-loaded jam in the ninth and Philadelphia moved a half-game in front of the fading New York Mets, who lost 1-0 at Washington.

                        RAY OF HOPE

Rays catcher Dioner Navarro singled with the bases loaded and one out in the ninth to drive in the winning run in a 2-1 victory over the Red Sox. It was the second time in a week Navarro has had a winning hit against the defending World Series champions, who have lost seven of eight at Tropicana Field this season. Tampa Bay moved a game ahead of Boston in the AL East.

                        ONE LAST RECORD

Derek Jeter passed Lou Gehrig for most career hits at the soon-to-close Yankee Stadium with his 1,270th, a sharp first-inning single past third baseman Juan Uribe, who was playing on the edge of the infield grass. The crowd of 52,558 gave Jeter a sustained standing ovation and he responded with a wave of his helmet while a bat boy retrieved the milestone ball.

                        HAREN TO THE RESCUE

The Diamondbacks haven’t been hitting lately, so Dan Haren took matters into his own hands, hurling a four-hitter in a 2-0 win over the Giants. Haren struck out 12 and walked two in his first career shutout and Arizona remained 4 1/2 games behind Los Angeles in the NL West. The Diamondbacks haven’t scored more than four runs in a game since Sept. 1, and haven’t scored more than three since Sept. 9.

                        OUCH!

Mets outfielder Fernando Tatis is out for the season after separating his right shoulder in the fifth inning against the Nationals. Tatis was hurt when he attempted to make a diving catch on pitcher Odalis Perez’s double. Tatis landed on his shoulder and stayed on the ground as the ball rolled past him for a double. He was replaced by Nick Evans. New York manager Jerry Manuel said Tatis would not return during the regular season or for a possible playoff run.

                        FIRST TIMER

Victor Martinez hit a winning three-run homer with one out in the 11th inning and Cleveland beat Minnesota 12-9. Martinez hit the home run off closer Joe Nathan, who had never allowed a homer to end a game in his first 427 career appearances.

                        SURGERY

Mariners pitcher Erik Bedard, out since July with a tight left shoulder, will undergo surgery Friday. The Mariners issued a statement saying exploratory arthroscopic surgery will be performed by Dr. Lewis Yocum, who is expected to remove any unhealthy tissue of foreign material from the labrum in the shoulder. Bedard was 6-5 this season with a 3.67 ERA. His major league career record is 46-38 with a 3.81 ERA in five seasons.

                        INKED

Impressed by his outings for Taiwan in the Olympics, the Cleveland Indians signed pitcher Chen-Chang Lee on Tuesday. The 21-year-old righty pitched nine innings in the Olympics, giving up six hits and two runs while striking out 11 in two games.

                        SPEAKING

“I think that’s when this kid started to become a man. Every time we are bleeding this guy gives us a chance to win the game.”—White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen on pitcher Gavin Floyd, who struck out Jason Giambi of the Yankees during a 12-pitch at-bat with the bases loaded in the fifth inning. Chicago eventually won 6-2.

                        SEASONS

                        Sept. 17

1930—Cleveland’s Earl Averill drove in eight runs with three consecutive home runs to lead the Indians to a 13-7 victory over the Washington Senators in a doubleheader opener. Averill added another homer in the nightcap, which the Senators took 6-4, and set an American League record with 11 RBIs in the twinbill.

1968—Gaylord Perry of the San Francisco Giants pitched a no-hitter against the St. Louis Cardinals for a 1-0 victory.

1984—Reggie Jackson, at 38, became the 13th player in major league history to record 500 home runs. No. 500 came off Kansas City pitcher Bud Black. His homer came exactly 17 years after he got his first career hit.

1984—Rookie pitcher Dwight Gooden of the New York Mets struck out 16 Phillies in a 2-1 loss at Philadelphia. Five days earlier, Gooden fanned 16 Pittsburgh Pirates tying a major league record for 32 strikeouts in two consecutive games.

1988—Jeff Reardon became the first pitcher to save 40 games in both leagues as the Minnesota Twins beat the Chicago White Sox 3-1. Reardon, who saved 42 games for the Montreal Expos in 1985, pitched the ninth inning for his 40th save in 47 opportunities.

1996—Hideo Nomo pitched a no-hitter against the Colorado Rockies, leading the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 9-0 victory. Nomo walked four batters and stuck out eight.

1998—Denny Neagle put Atlanta’s pitching staff into the record books as he limited Arizona to four hits in six innings for a 1-0 win. Neagle improved to 15-11, making the Braves the first major league team with five 15-game winners since the 1930 Washington Senators. Neagle joined Tom Glavine, Greg Maddux, John Smoltz and Kevin Millwood.

2003—In Boston’s 7-0 loss to Tampa Bay, Todd Walker’s ninth-inning double was the Red Sox’s 608th extra-base hit of the season, breaking the major league record set by the 1996 Mariners.

2004—San Francisco’s Barry Bonds hit the 700th home run of his career, joining Babe Ruth (714) and Hank Aaron (755) as the only players to reach the milestone. Bonds connected in the third inning at home, a 392-foot solo shot to left-center. San Francisco beat San Diego 4-1.

2004—Seattle’s Ichiro Suzuki broke Lloyd Waner’s single-season record for singles with his 199th in a 6-3 win over Oakland. Suzuki’s two hits gave him 235 for the season, 22 shy of the major league record set by George Sisler of the St. Louis Browns in 1920.

2007—Frank Thomas hit three home runs to lift the Toronto Blue Jays over the Boston Red Sox 6-1. Thomas homered twice off knuckleballer Tim Wakefield, then hit his third against reliever Kyle Snyder.

Today’s birthdays: Casey Janssen 27; Danny Haren 28.
