    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, September 16

The Red Sox and Rays continue their series in Tampa Bay on Tuesday, while NFL bettors start to pour over all of the lines for Week 3. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

Matt Cassel didn't blow up as the Patriots' starting quarterback in Week 2, as he was able to guide his team to a road win over the Jets. That has given the oddsmakers a little more confidence in New England for Week 3, as they opened as 13-point home favorites against the Dolphins. Also opening as big favorites were the Giants (-13) vs. the Bengals, the Seahawks (-9) vs. the Rams, and the Bills (-9) vs. the Raiders.

    Other Notable Events

Josh Beckett (12-9, 4.10 ERA) will get the ball for the Red Sox on Tuesday night, while Andy Sonnanstine (13-7, 4.47 ERA) starts for the Rays. Beckett has given up just one earned run on 10 hits over his last 11 innings of work, and he held the Rays to one earned run over six innings last time out. Sonnanstine held the Red Sox to one unearned run on four hits over seven innings in his start against them September 10.

The other big matchup on the diamond on Tuesday night sees the Cubs playing host to the Brewers. Milwaukee is still reeling from a sweep at the hands of the Wild-Card rival Phillies over the weekend, and they desperately need to right the ship this week. C.C. Sabathia (9-0, 1.59 ERA in the NL) will get the ball for the Brewers in the series opener on Tuesday night. Ryan Dempster (15-6, 3.02 ERA) will take the hill for the Cubs.

    The Rest of the Schedule

Other games around the National League on Tuesday include the Dodgers at Pittsburgh, Houston at Florida, the Mets at Washington, St. Louis at Cincinnati, Philadelphia at Atlanta, San Diego at Colorado, and San Francisco at Arizona. The red-hot Roy Oswalt (one earned run over his last four starts) gets the ball for the Astros.

Rounding out Tuesday's American League schedule: Minnesota at Cleveland, the White Sox at the Yankees, Baltimore at Toronto, Detroit at Texas, Seattle at Kansas City, and the Angels at Oakland. The Mariners' Brandon Morrow has surrendered just three earned runs on six hits over 12 2-3 innings since re-joining the team as a starter.

    News from the Wire

Chargers RB LaDainian Tomlinson had just 26 yards on 10 carries for the team on Sunday as he deals with turf toe . . . Tigers SP Freddy Garcia is expected to make his first start of the season on Wednesday night versus the Rangers . . . the Angels are still trying to get SS Erick Aybar, OF Vladimir Guerrero, and 2B Howie Kendrick back to full health.

    A Peek at the Future

It'll be Tim Wakefield (9-10, 3.92 ERA) vs. Matt Garza (11-9, 3.60 ERA) in the Boston/Tampa series on Wednesday, and Ben Sheets (13-8, 2.97 ERA) vs. Jason Marquis (10-8, 4.36 ERA) in the Milwaukee/Chicago series . . . early college football games this week include Kansas State (-3) at Louisville on Wednesday, West Virginia (-3.5) at Colorado on Thursday, and Baylor at Connecticut (-14.5) on Friday.

      Six-pack for Tuesday

-- Astros' trip to Milwaukee was a disaster; they had one hit in two games, losing twice- they trail Brewers by 2.5 games.

-- Red Sox played Home Run Derby against Scott Kazmir in a 13-5 win at Tropicana Field. Teams are now tied for first, but both are going to make the playoffs.

-- Dontrelle Willis made his first start since May, allowing two hits, three runs in five innings in an 11-8 loss at Texas.

-- People in Queens have to be nervous; Mets lost Monday in Washington, their lead in NL East is just a half a game.

-- Tennessee, Auburn and Arkansas are all home dogs in the SEC this week-- you doubt that the SEC is the best league?

-- Eight of the 15 teams that won in NFL this week trailed in the fourth quarter, in one of most exciting weeks ever.

Tuesday's List of 13: Our NFL List of 13........

        13) Saints-- Other than the Eagles, best of 1-1 teams; they're an exciting, fun team, but one that has been travelling a lot this month. Road trip to Denver this week promises to be another high-scoring game.

        12) Ravens-- No bye because of the hurricane; they practiced all last week, just had weekend off. Rookie Flacco hasn't made his first road start yet, but six of next eight games are on road.

        11) Titans-- Tennessee plays good defense, but they have to keep Kerry Collins healthy, or else Vince Young goes back in the spotlight, where he is uncomfortable. Titans converted 7 of 26 on third down, but forced 10 3/outs on 23 opponent drives.

        10) Packers-- Packers have 262 rushing yards in a 2-0 start, so that takes heat off Rodgers (42-60/502 passing); they averaged 8.1/8.3 yards per pass attempt. Now they catch Dallas on short work week after emotional Monday night game.

        9) Broncos-- Scored 80 points in winning pair of divisional tilts now have high-powered Saints visiting Sunday. They have ten TDs, only two 3/outs on 19 drives, but if they had trouble with Sproles on special teams, what will Reggie Bush do?

        8) Patriots-- They'll play solid defense, conservative offense and wait for you to beat yourself. Very important to get ahead of them, to force them to open up game, because Cassel isn't up to winning a game, just managing it.

        7) Steelers-- Roethlisberger's shoulder is a concern; game with Eagles this week should be excellent. Ran ball 70 times, threw it 37 in first two games. Six trips to red zone- six TDs. Allowed a pair of TDs on 20 drives, with a +4 turnover ratio.

        6) Panthers-- Two come-from-behind wins without Smith, their best WR; are just 7-28 on third down, had punt blocked for TD by Bears. Smith is back this week, in time for trip to Metrodome to face wounded 0-2 Vikings.

        5) Eagles-- One of best Monday night games ever; McNabb is healthy-- Philly scored 75 points in its first two games. If you were andy Reid, how would you react to DeSean Jackson's TD that became a fumble when he showboated too early?

        4) Cardinals-- If Brett Favre had Kurt Warner's stats (39-56 in a 2-0 start, for 540 yards), ESPN would be pre-empting its regular programming to do special features on him. But Christian Kurt doesn't retire every hour on the hour, so he'll be lucky to get a feature on a pregame show.

        3) Bills-- They have a real good RB, an explosive return guy and a QB who doesn't screw things up. Bobby April is best special teams coach in NFL. Don't play New England until the 10th week- their schedule until then isn't too difficult.

        2) Cowboys-- They accumulate talented characters the way the Raiders did in the 70's. Felix Jones gives offense an explosive presence, but with a coach and QB who have never won even one playoff game, they're not very reliable favorite to win NFC.

        1) Giants-- Defending champs are best until beaten; they won first two games easily. Not much they don't do well, have good balance on offense (354 rushing yards, 441 passing) and Eli is a solid field general. Won their last twelve road games.

          SCOREBOARD

          Tuesday, Sept. 16

Chicago White Sox at New York Yankees (7:05 p.m. EDT). Gavin Floyd (15-7, 3.77 ERA) takes the mound for the AL Central-leading White Sox against Andy Pettitte (13-13, 4.52). The Yankees will miss the playoffs for the first time since 1996.

          STARS

          Monday

          — Ted Lilly, Cubs, carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning a day after Carlos Zambrano no-hit the Astros, and Chicago beat Houston 6-1.

          — David Ortiz, Red Sox, went 2-for-4 with four RBIs and one of six Boston home runs in a 13-5 win over Tampa Bay.

          — Manny Ramirez, Dodgers, was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, raising his average since joining Los Angeles to .395 in the Dodgers’ 8-2 rout of Pittsburgh.

          — Adrian Gonzalez, Padres, drove in four runs with a 3-for-4 game, including his 33rd home run, in San Diego’s 11-5 win over Colorado.

          — Taylor Teagarden, Rangers, hit a grand slam and drove in a career-high five runs to help Texas beat Detroit 11-8.

          — Kyle Davies, Royals, allowed four hits in eight scoreless innings and Kansas City shut out hapless Seattle 3-0.

          FIRED

In an unprecedented move, the Brewers fired manager Ned Yost, hoping to pull out of another late-season slump that has jeopardized the team’s chance of making the playoffs for the first time since 1982. Third-base coach Dale Sveum will take over for the remainder of the season. The Brewers have lost seven of eight and fallen into a tie with Philadelphia for the NL wild-card lead. It marked the first time in major league history—except the strike-split 1981 season—that a manager was fired in August or later with his team in playoff position, the Elias Sports Bureau said.

          NEAR NO-NO

Everyone from Cubs manager Lou Piniella to fellow starter Ryan Dempster needled Ted Lilly about having to follow up Carlos Zambrano’s no-hitter. Lilly sure came close to one of his own. He pitched no-hit ball until Mark Loretta’s seventh-inning single, and the Cubs beat the Astros 6-1 to sweep a two-game series moved from Houston by Hurricane Ike. On Sunday, Zambrano pitched the Cubs’ first no-hitter since Milt Pappas in 1972, leading Chicago to a 5-0 win. Lilly faced the minimum through six innings, allowing only a leadoff walk in the second to Lance Berkman. Mark Loretta broke it up with a clean single to right with none out in the seventh.

          TIGHT RACE

The defending World Series champion Red Sox homered a season-high six times, overwhelming All-Star Scott Kazmir and the division-leading Rays 13-5 to pull within percentage points (.002) of ending the Tampa Bay’s two-month stay atop the standings. The Rays (88-60) were a season-high 5 1/2 games up on Boston heading into September. They’re 4-9 this month. The Red Sox (89-61), on the other hand, have won three straight and 10 of 14 in September to get as close to the lead as they’ve been since mid-July, when they erased a five-game deficit in a week to pull ahead by a half game at the All-Star break.

          JOBA’S ROLE

Jorge Posada reignited the debate over Joba Chamberlain’s future, recommending the young pitcher be kept in the bullpen and predicting more injuries if the Yankees put him back in their starting rotation. “If you start him and he pitches 200 innings in one year, you’re going to lose him. He’s going to get hurt. I don’t see him as a starter,” Posada said Monday during a session of “CenterStage,” scheduled to air on the team’s YES Network on Sept. 28. Chamberlain, the hard-throwing righty who turns 23 next week, began the season in the Yankees bullpen, then moved to the rotation in June. He was sidelined from Aug. 4 to Sept. 2 because of rotator cuff tendinitis and went back to the bullpen when he returned.

          AILING

Rangers right-hander Brandon McCarthy left his start against the Tigers in the first inning with a strained flexor tendon on his pitching hand. McCarthy got the first two outs, then began shaking his hand after delivering a pitch to Magglio Ordonez. Rangers manager Ron Washington and team trainers ran to the mound to check on McCarthy, who could not continue. The Rangers will monitor McCarthy’s condition over the next few days to determine if surgery will be necessary.

          PULLING A ZIEGLER

Scott Lewis pitched six shutout innings in his second career start and the Indians beat the Twins 3-1. Lewis has yet to allow a run in 14 innings since being called up from the minors Sept. 7. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Lewis has the longest scoreless streak to start his career as an Indians pitcher since 1969. He’s not the first rookie to start his career with a scoreless inning streak this year, though. Oakland’s Brad Ziegler tied the major league mark for relievers by pitching 39 straight shutout innings to start his career, having his streak stopped by Tampa Bay earlier this month.

          SHUT DOWN

Detroit left-hander Kenny Rogers won’t pitch again this season, Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. Rogers is a free agent at the end of the season and the Tigers are unlikely to re-sign the 43-year-old veteran of 20 major league seasons. Rogers allowed seven runs in 4 2-3 innings on Sunday against the Chicago White Sox and had given up at least six runs in four straight starts. He finishes the season with a 9-13 ERA and 5.70 ERA in 30 starts. Rogers didn’t speak with the media when he arrived at the ballpark about an hour before game time.

          BENCHED

Robinson Cano was benched again by the Yankees on Monday night for not hustling after a ball the previous day. The slumping second baseman was yanked from Sunday’s game against Tampa Bay after he was late retrieving Cliff Floyd’s hard grounder that caromed into shallow right field. Cody Ransom started at second Monday night in the opener of a four-game series against the AL Central-leading Chicago White Sox. Girardi said he would decide Tuesday whether Cano will start.

          SAITO SIGHTING

Dodgers reliever Takashi Saito made his first appearance since being diagnosed with a sprained ligament in his right elbow two months ago, pitching a scoreless eighth inning in Los Angeles’ 8-2 win against Pittsburgh. Saito, the Dodgers’ closer until he was hurt, walked one and struck out two while facing four batters. Manager Joe Torre wanted to use Saito in what he called “a non-stressful situation” his first time out, and the Dodgers led 8-0 at the time.

          MILESTONE

Boston’s Mike Timlin pitched the eighth inning against Tampa Bay, making his 1,051st relief appearance—an all-time record for right-handed relievers. He had been tied with Kent Tekulve. “Quite humbling,” Timlin said of the record. “It’s something I’d been eyeballing all season, and its been out there slowly coming. I was not trying to be excited about it, but I probably will be when the season is over.”

          SPEAKING

“(Yost) didn’t have all the answers for what is going on the last two weeks and I’m not sure I have all the answers. I’m not sure this is the right one, either.”—Milwaukee general manager Doug Melvin during a news conference after the Brewers fired manager Ned Yost

          SEASONS

          Sept. 16

1914-Roger Peckinpaugh, at 23, was hired to finish the season as manager of the New York Yankees.

1924-Jim Bottomley went 6-for-6 including two home runs and batted in a record 12 runs as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Brooklyn Dodgers 17-3.

1960-Warren Spahn, 39, pitched a no-hitter and set a Braves' record with 15 strikeouts. Milwaukee beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-0.

1965-Dave Morehead of the Boston Red Sox pitched a 2-0 no-hitter against the Cleveland Indians at Fenway Park.

1975-The Pittsburgh Pirates routed the Chicago Cubs in Wrigley Field 22-0. It was the most one-sided shutout since 1900. Rennie Stennett had seven hits, including two two-hit innings.

1987-Joe Carter of the Cleveland Indians became the ninth major leaguer to hit 30 home runs and steal 30 bases in the same season when he stole his career-high 30th base in the fourth inning of a 5-3 loss to the Seattle Mariners.

1988-Cincinnati's Tom Browning pitched a perfect game as the Reds beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 1-0. Browning struck out eight and allowed eight balls to be hit out of the infield.

1993-Dave Winfield of the Minnesota Twins became the 19th player in major league history to get 3,000 hits, singling off Oakland's Dennis Eckersley.

1996-Paul Molitor got his 3,000th career hit, becoming the 21st major leaguer to reach the mark and the first to do it with a triple.

1997-Philadelphia's Curt Schilling struck out nine in the Phillies' win over the New York Mets to become the 13th pitcher since 1900 with 300 strikeouts in a season.

2000-Chicago's Sammy Sosa became the third player to hit 50 home runs in three different seasons, joining Babe Ruth and Mark McGwire. Sosa homered in the Cubs' 7-6 loss to St. Louis, joining McGwire as the only players to hit 50 in three straight years.

2006-Washington's Alfonso Soriano became the fourth player in major league history to record 40 home runs and 40 stolen bases in a single season during an 8-4 win over Milwaukee. Soriano swiped second base, his 40th stolen base, to go along with 45 home runs. Jose Canseco (Oakland, 1988), Barry Bonds (San Francisco, 1996) and Alex Rodriguez (Seattle, 1998) are the others.

2006-Chone Figgins hit for the cycle in the Los Angeles Angels' 12-6 loss to the Texas Rangers.

2007-Jim Thome became the 23rd player, and third this season, to reach 500 home runs. The slugger hit a two-run shot in the bottom of the ninth inning off reliever Dustin Moseley to give the Chicago White Sox a 9-7 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.

2007-Todd Jones pitched a shaky ninth inning for his 300th career save in Detroit's 6-4 win over Minnesota, becoming the 21st pitcher in major league history to reach the mark.

          Today's birthday: Robin Yount 53.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Yankees (-180, O/U 9): Much like the Yankees themselves, Andy Pettitte has fallen on hard times of late. He’s lost four consecutive starts, allowing 19 runs over 22.2 innings. Overall, the Yankees are just 2-8 in Pettitte’s last 10 starts. He’s even struggled at Yankee Stadium this year where he’s just 5-7 with a 5.32 ERA. Even though Pettitte has stumbled recently, the UNDER has cashed six of the last seven times he’s taken the mound.

Yankees are 4-0 in their last 4 during Game 2 of a series.
The UNDER is 9-3 in Pettitte’s last 12 starts vs. AL Central.

              Key Injuries - NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Boston Red Sox at Tampa Bay Rays [NESN | 7:10 PM ET]

Red Sox (-120, O/U 8.5): After getting hammered by the Blue Jays, Josh Beckett has put together two strong outings in a row. In his last 11 innings pitched, Beckett has only allowed one run. One of those starts was against the Rays, where Beckett took a no-decision after giving up just one run over six innings. Overall, Beckett is 5-3 versus Tampa is his career with a 3.38 ERA. The UNDER is 3-1 in Beckett’s three starts this year against Tampa.

Red Sox are 4-1 in their last 5 road games vs. a right-handed starter.
Red Sox are 1-4 in Beckett’s last 5 starts vs. AL East.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Rays: Andy Sonnanstine’s most recent outing was against the Sox in a game Tampa won but he received a no-decision after allowing just one run over seven innings. Sonnanstine is 7-3 at home but his ERA is a less than impressive 4.88. While Sonnanstine performed well his last time out against Boston, he’s 1-1 with a robust 6.59 ERA versus the Sox in his career. The OVER is 4-1 in Sonnanstine’s last five starts.

Rays are 7-1 in Sonnanstine’s last 8 home starts.
The OVER is 4-1 in Sonnanstine’s last 5 starts vs. Red Sox.

Key Injuries - OF B.J. Upton (quadricep) is day-to-day.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Milwaukee Brewers at Chicago Cubs [8:05 PM ET]

Brewers: To say the Brewers got their money’s worth from C.C. Sabathia would be an understatement. Milwaukee is 9-1 in Sabathia’s last 10 and he’s allowed more than three runs just once over that stretch. While Sabathia has dominated many opponents since joining the Brewers, he hasn’t had much success in two career starts against the Cubs, sporting an ERA of 12.00. The UNDER has cashed in Sabathia’s last four starts.

Brewers are 4-0 in Sabathia’s last 4 starts vs. NL Central.
Brewers are 0-4 in their last 4 road games.

Key Injuries - OF Gabe Kapler (shoulder) is OUT.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Cubs (-140, O/U 9.5): Ryan Dempster will be looking to get back on track tonight after three subpar performances. In his last 20 innings of work, Dempster has allowed 23 hits and 10 runs, while walking nine. Dempster has been strong at Wrigley Field, going 12-3 with a 2.90 ERA. The UNDER is 4-2 in Dempster’s last six starts at home.

Cubs are 15-4 in Dempster’s last 19 home starts.
Cubs are 11-3 in their last 14 games vs. a left-handed starter.

Major League Baseball – Streaking Pitchers

                MLB

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                Streaking Starting Pitchers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Tuesday’s streaking and slumping pitchers

                Streaking

Francisco Liriano, Minnesota Twins (5-3, 3.19 ERA)

Liriano has been just what the Twins needed since he was called up from the minors in early August. The left-hander is 5-0 in his eight starts since then and hasn't allowed more than three earned runs in any of his starts since being called back up to the bigs.

Liriano is usually good for at least five strikeouts and he hasn't allowed any more than six hits in a game since his return despite going at least five innings in each start.

The secret is out on this youngster, however. He was heavily favored in his most recent outing against Kansas City and he should see more of that against sub-.500 Cleveland on Tuesday.

Derek Lowe, Los Angeles Dodgers (13-11, 3.48)

Derek Lowe has a lot to do with Los Angeles' late-season charge for the NL West pennant. He hasn't allowed more than two runs over his last six starts and posted a pair of shutouts over that span.

The longball was a big issue for Lowe earlier in the year, but he's keeping it in the park now, giving up just three jacks through his last 11 outings. The 6-foot-6 right-hander should be strong down the stretch too, having cracked the 110-pitch mark just once since mid-June.

                Slumping

Matt Cain, San Francisco Giants (8-12, 3.96)

You can excuse Cain for slipping lately. Not only does he play for the lowly Giants, but he also ranks sixth in the National League for most innings pitched this season. The guy is exhausted.

Cain has given up 15 earned runs combined over his past three starts, despite fewer than 15 innings pitched over that span. He was most recently chased out in the fourth inning after giving up six runs to the San Diego Padres.

The Giants are 1-3 in his last four outings.

Jeff Karstens, Pittsburgh Pirates (2-5, 4.46)

The last thing Jeff Karstens needed right now was a bothersome toothache. The right-hander was scratched from his scheduled start last Saturday because of an abscessed tooth.

Karstens, who pitched back-to-back shutouts when he joined the rotation at the beginning of August, has now dropped five straight decisions heading into Tuesday's tilt with the Dodgers. He only lasted three innings before getting the hook against the Giants last week.

Hot Lines: Tuesday's best MLB bets
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Milwaukee Brewers at Chicago Cubs (+105, N/A)

One day after the front office made the stunning decision to fire Yost, Sabathia will try to help the fading Brewers keep pace in the NL wild-card race Tuesday night when they begin a three-game set with the Central-leading Cubs at Wrigley Field.

Milwaukee (83-67) trailed the Cubs by 3 1/2 games in the Central on July 6, when it brought in Sabathia to make a push toward the division title that alluded it last season. The Brewers had an 8 1/2-game cushion in late June 2007, but ultimately were overtaken by Chicago, keeping Milwaukee from its first playoff appearance since 1982.

Sabathia (9-0, 1.59 ERA) has certainly done his part to get the team to the postseason as the Brewers are 12-1 when he pitches, but Milwaukee is 22-26 when he hasn't started.

Those struggles have been much more pronounced in September. The Brewers came into the month with a 5 1/2-game lead in the wild-card race, but have gone 3-11 since and that ultimately cost Yost his job Monday.

While Sabathia has been prominently mentioned as an NL Cy Young candidate, it'll be the Cubs who are giving the ball to a 2008 All-Star on Tuesday night. Ryan Dempster (15-6, 3.02) will be trying to earn his career-high 16th win, and 12 of those have come at Wrigley.

Dempster's latest outing was Tuesday at St. Louis, where he pitched well but didn't figure in the decision. The right-hander gave up three runs over seven innings in Chicago's 4-3 loss.

Dempster hasn't had any problems with Milwaukee this season. He's 3-0 with a 2.37 ERA in three starts against the Brewers, who are hitting .182 against him.

                    Pick: Brewers

San Francisco Giants at Arizona Diamondbacks (-160, 8 1/2)

Victories have been few and relatively far between for both Dan Haren and the Arizona Diamondbacks.

With the struggling Haren on the mound, the fading Diamondbacks look to post consecutive wins for the first time in almost a month when they continue their home series with the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday night.

The Diamondbacks' recent struggles have coincided with the problems on the mound by top starters Brandon Webb and Haren. Webb, who appeared to be the front-runner for the NL Cy Young Award most of the season, snapped a three-game losing streak by beating Cincinnati on Friday.

Haren (14-8, 3.39 ERA), meanwhile, takes the ball trying to avoid a third straight losing decision. He is 0-2 with a 5.57 ERA in his last four starts since beating San Diego on Aug. 20.

Matt Cain (8-12, 3.96) takes the mound for San Francisco looking to avoid a fourth straight losing decision after allowing six runs and nine hits in 3 1-3 innings of an 11-3 loss at San Diego on Thursday.

"It was very frustrating," said Cain, who is 0-3 with a 6.28 ERA in his last five starts. "I'm embarrassed by the way I pitched. I didn't come out and perform."

The right-hander is 3-2 with a 3.49 ERA in nine starts against Arizona.

                    Pick: Giants
