          SCOREBOARD

          Sunday, Sept. 14

Toronto at Boston (1:35 p.m. EDT). Roy Halladay (18-10, 2.77 ERA) won five straight starts before a loss at Chicago in his last outing. He leads the Blue Jays against Jon Lester (14-5, 3.23) and the Red Sox in the finale of the teams’ weekend series.

          STARS

          Saturday

          — Denard Span, Twins, went 4-for-8 with two home runs and five RBIs in Minnesota’s doubleheader sweep of Baltimore, 12-2, 12-6.

          — Mark Teahen, Royals, hit two home runs and had five hits combined to help Kansas City sweep a twinbill from Cleveland, 8-3, 8-4.

          — Tim Lincecum, Giants, pitched a four-hit shutout for his first major league complete game and San Francisco beat San Diego 7-0.

          — Juan Rivera, Angels, went 4-for-4 with a home run, three doubles and three RBIs in Los Angeles’ 5-2 win over Seattle.

          — Jimmy Rollins, Phillies, went 3-for-5 with a home run, double and two RBIs and Philadelphia beat reeling Milwaukee 7-3.

          — Jonathon Niese, Mets, pitched eight shutout innings to help New York shut out Atlanta 5-0.

          MILESTONE

Francisco Rodriguez set the major league record with his 58th save this season, closing out the Los Angeles Angels’ 5-2 win over Seattle on Saturday night. Two days earlier, Rodriguez tied the mark of 57 set by Bobby Thigpen with the Chicago White Sox in 1990. The Angels’ right-hander also posted a save on Wednesday to help the Angels clinch the AL West title. He has blown six save opportunities this year. Thigpen blew eight chances in his record-setting season. With fans on their feet, Rodriguez struck out Raul Ibanez swinging with two on for the final out. K-Rod immediately lifted his arms and looked skyward in his traditional salute to his late grandfather, then sank to his knees.

          INFIELD SLUGGERS

Hanley Ramirez and Jorge Cantu homered to help the Marlins beat the Nationals 4-2 and the Marlins became the second major league team to have three infielders with 30 homers. Ramirez’s homer was his 30th, and he joined first baseman Mike Jacobs (32) and second baseman Dan Uggla (30) for Florida this season. The Marlins join the 2001 Oakland Athletics, who reached the mark with first baseman Jason Giambi (38), third baseman Eric Chavez (32) and shortstop Miguel Tejada (31). Cantu, the third baseman, isn’t far behind, with 26.

          SEPTEMBER SWOON

Clayton Kershaw allowed just four singles in six crisp innings and the Dodgers beat Colorado 5-1 for their 12th win in 13 games. The Rockies have lost seven straight, a turnaround from last September, when they went 14-1 to reach the NL playoffs. That run included seven wins against the Dodgers, whom the Rockies passed en route to a wild-card berth.

          SEPTEMBER SWOON, PART II

Struggling Milwaukee has lost nine of 12, including two straight in Philly. The Brewers are trying to avoid another late-season collapse. They built an 8 1/2 -game lead in the NL Central by late June last year only to finish two games behind the Chicago Cubs.

          WON BY ONE

Jeff Francoeur hit a tying single in the eighth inning and the Braves rallied against Johan Santana and the Mets’ bullpen, beating New York 3-2 in the opener of a doubleheader for their first one-run road win in more than a year. Mike Gonzalez closed it out with a perfect ninth and the Braves won a one-run game away from home for the first time since a 7-6 victory on Aug. 9, 2007, also at Shea Stadium. Atlanta had lost 22 such games in a row this season and 29 overall—the longest streak of its kind in major league history, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

          SURGERY

Seattle’s Adrian Beltre has decided to undergo thumb and shoulder surgeries next week and will make his final appearance of the season on Sunday. He has continued to play despite a torn ligament in his left thumb. He went 0-for-3 in Saturday night’s game against the Angels to end a 15-game hitting streak. The Mariners’ third baseman was batting .270 with 25 home runs and 76 RBIs.

          PLAYER TO BE NAMED

A day after first putting on his Cincinnati uniform, former Diamondback Micah Owings doubled in the deciding run in the 10th inning to give the Reds a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over fading Arizona. The Diamondbacks have lost 13 of their past 17. Owings was the “player to be named” in the deal that sent slugger Adam Dunn to the Diamondbacks.

          SHUTOUT

Tim Lincecum pitched a four-hitter for his first career shutout and the Giants beat the Padres 7-0. Lincecum, who leads the majors with 237 strikeouts, lowered his NL-best ERA to 2.43. He stayed unbeaten in his past 10 starts. The last time Lincecum lost was on July 20, against Milwaukee. The 24-year-old hadn’t thrown a complete game in his first 53 starts.

          SPEAKING

“I knew it was going to be a really special moment, the way the fans cheered for me when I was coming in. It was amazing. I haven’t felt like this since we won the World Series.”—Angels closer Francisco Rodriguez after setting a major league record with his 58th save in Los Angeles’ 5-2 win over Seattle.

          SEASONS

          Sept. 14

1903—Red Ames’ debut with the New York Giants was a five-inning, 5-0, no-hit victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. The game was called in midafternoon because of unusual darkness.

1923—Red Sox first baseman George Burns pulled off an unassisted triple play against the Cleveland Indians.

1951—Bob Nieman of the St. Louis Browns hit home runs in his first two at-bats in the majors. Both came off Boston Red Sox pitcher Maury McDermott. The Red Sox won 9-6.

1968—Denny McLain of the Detroit Tigers beat the Oakland A’s 5-4 to become the first pitcher since Dizzy Dean in 1934 to win 30 games.

1986—Bob Brenly of San Francisco tied a major league record with four errors in one inning, but atoned with two homers, including the game-winner, to give the Giants a 7-6 victory over the Atlanta Braves. Brenly, a catcher, was playing third base.

1987—Ernie Whitt hit three of Toronto’s major league record 10 home runs as the Blue Jays rolled to an 18-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. Baltimore shortstop Cal Ripken had his consecutive-inning streak stopped at 8,243 when he was replaced at shortstop by Ron Washington in the eighth inning.

1990—Ken Griffey and his son hit back-to-back homers in the first inning of the Seattle Mariners’ 7-5 loss to the California Angels. The unprecedented father-and-son homers came off Kirk McCaskill.

1994—The baseball season, already shut down by a monthlong strike, was canceled along with the World Series in a vote by 26 of the 28 teams.

1996—Mark McGwire became the 13th major leaguer to hit 50 home runs in a season with a homer in a 9-8 loss to Cleveland.

1998—The Atlanta Braves clinched their seventh straight division crown, winning the NL East with a victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. Among the major pro sports leagues—baseball, NFL, NBA and NHL—only seven franchises have finished first during the regular season at least seven times in a row.

2002—Tampa Bay’s 8-4 loss at Toronto was the Devil Rays’ 100th of the season. The Devil Rays (48-100) reached 100 losses quicker than any AL team since the 1949 Washington Senators lost 100 in their 147th game. They also became the first team to lose 100 in consecutive seasons since Toronto did it from 1977-79.

2003—The Detroit Tigers lost to the Royals 7-2 to become the first team in 34 years to lose 110 games in one season. Detroit (38-110) had the most losses since the Montreal Expos and San Diego Padres went 52-110 in 1969, their first seasons in the major leagues.

2005—Andruw Jones hit his 50th home run, becoming the first major leaguer to reach that mark since 2002, in Atlanta’s 12-4 loss to Philadelphia.

Today’s birthdays: Delmon Young 23; Chad Bradford 34.

                Six-pack for Sunday

-- Francisco Rodriguez set the saves record Saturay night; will be interesting to see how much he throws in last couple weeks, as Angels get ready for playoffs.

-- Twins scored 12 runs in both ends of twinbill, are now tied with White Sox atop AL Central, with fifteen days left.

-- Milwaukee is 3-9 in September; they lead Phillies by couple games, Astros by 2.5 in NL Central.

-- Cubs-Astros will play in Milwaukee today and tomorrow, then make up the third game this weekend September 29.

-- Micah Owings was finally dealt from Arizona to Cincinnati to complete the Adam Dunn trade, then he beat Snakes with a game-winning double, as Arizona's skid continues.

-- If I owned the Giants and Tim Lincecum threw 138 pitches in meaningless 7-0 game, I'd have a talk with the skipper.

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up college football Saturday

                  13) The first week in January got better last night, as Ohio St got crushed in Coliseum; we won't be seeing them in BCS title game, thank the Lord. With Michigan getting waxed in South Bend, looks like Wisconsin is best team in the Big 11.

                  12) Huge upset late Saturday night, as UNLV went to Tempe, came back from down 20-10 in fourth quarter and stunned the Arizona State Sun Devils, 23-20 in OT, as 22-point underdogs.

                  11) Dreadful performance by Cal Bears, who trailed 21-6 at the half as 14-point favorites at Maryland- they woke up late, but still lost 35-27. Not the best day for the Pac-10.

                  10) BYU 59, UCLA 0; game was 42-0 at the half. Washington lost 55-14 at home, Stanford lost at TCU, Arizona State's home loss, and Washington State's loss Friday night. Bad week.

                  9) Oh yeah, Arizona lost 36-28 at New Mexico. Not good.

                  8) Virginia is awful; they lost 52-7 to USC, now 45-14 to UConn after struggling to beat Richmond. No wonder they banned all signs at Cavalier home games-- the natives are restless.

                  7) Wyoming trailed North Dakota State 10-0 at half, pulled out a 16-13 win with 0:04 left; Minnesota got outgained at home by Montana State, but beat the Bobcats 35-23.

                  6) Kentucky almost had monumental collapse last night-- they led 20-14, but Middle Tennessee blocked FG in last minute. On last play of game, Blue Raiders threw Hail Mary which one of their guys caught on 15, but was tackled on one-yard line as time expired. Would have been second upset in row for MTSU

                  5) Auburn 3, Mississippi State 2. Tommy Tuberville has real good bullpen this season. Bulldogs were 0-14 on third down, gained 116 yards for the whole game. In good weather. Ugh.

                  4) Vanderbilt is 3-0 and halfway to its first bowl game since a quarter century ago (1982); they already have an SEC win, so they still have one more non-league win ahead of them.

                  3) Charlie Weis got clobbered from behind on sidelines during his game Saturday and blew out his left knee. San Diego State got crushed by San Jose last night; Michigan is terrible- want to see if Notre Dame gets any votes for the top 25.

                  2) East Carolina got a TD on a blocked FG, then got TD pass in final 2:00 to escape the Superdome with 28-24 win over spunky Tulane team that hung tough with Alabama last week.

                  1) Buffalo scored on 35-yard Hail Mary on last play of game to hand Temple its second consecutive loss on last play-- Owls aren't bad, but they don't know how to win these close games.
